Cvpnd.exe. occupies 99% of CPU and remains in loop

Hi, I'm trying to solve the following problems:
1. After having to reformat C and reinstall all of XP and programmes, my VPN client (both versions 4.0.2. and 5.0 were tried) freezes my PC at "authenticating user" or "negotiating security policies". At best it slows down to an unworkable "speed" (read slowness). What can be the problem?
2. The slowness is probably due to Cisco's cvpnd.exe file that when trying to log in to the host occupies cpu for 99% and keeps on going (even "end process" via ctrl.alt.delete has no effect, it keeps on running).
I use Bullguard 7 for firewall, spyware, virus scans etc. and update every day. NOD32 also scans for viruses; and there are some spyware and adware scanners that never gave problems with VPN before reinstalling.
I tried (re)installing and running the VPN client software after closing all firewall's, virusscanners etc. To no avail. So it can hardly be a port being closed by the firewall; or has anyone ever heard of a provider closing ports for VPN clients-to-host traffic?
Thanks for any suggestion.

I have a similar issue with Python and _teamsserver.  I am using file sharing in Server (3.1.2) as well as Time Machine.  I would like to eventually use other services so I don't want to remove Server.  I was also having high processor usage with Python and _devicemgr.  I moved Server to the Trash but did not empty.  That quit the processes and I was able to trash the log that had grown to 1.58 GB.  I then put the Server app back in the Applications folder and restarted.
That resolved my Python _devicemgr high processor usage but I still have the issue with high Python _teamsserrver processor usage.
Any ideas Linc?
Thanks!

  • AUDIODG.EXE hogging 80-100% of CPU and sound not working in Vista . . .

I posted this on a Microsoft Answers Forum but none of the techs or people reading have been able to help so far.  I'm dying to get to the bottom of this:
    Here is my computer:
    MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    2GB RAM
    XFX GEFORCE 6600 GT 128MB DDR3 DUAL DVI & TV OUT (PCI-E)
    200GB WD SATA HDD
500GB WD HDD in external enclosure via USB2
NEC ND-3520A 16X DVD±RW Dual Layer DVD Burner
    LG CD Burner
I've been using Vista Home Premium successfully for some time.  Recently, not too long after I did a clean wipe of my OS, my audio would stop working.  The way it would happen is that everything would work fine until I started iTunes or another audio application and when I would hit play, things would lock up.
Upon inspection of my system resources, I'm noticing that the audio platform for Vista, via the audiodg.exe, is using close to 100% of my CPU resources, even when the computer is making no sound at all.
I've had a Sound Blaster Live! card in my computer for some time but I was not using it; I use the Realtek AC'97 audio drivers that are on my motherboard instead.  I thought that the conflict may be the computer wanting to recognize my Sound Blaster, so I took it out of my computer but the problem seems to be worse.
Are there any BIOS setting that need to be adjusted for my sound to start working again?
I'm very reliant on the audio processing power of my computer (I'm in the radio industry, part-time) and this is a huge drag on my productivity.
Any tips would be much appreciated.
    REPLY #1:
Thank you for using Microsoft Answers forum.  I suggest going to the manufacture of your sound card and download the latest drivers and install them.
    MY RESPONSE:
Good suggestion.  The problem is this:
I am running on-board audio.  I have an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard which runs "Realtek ALC Series AC97 Audio Driver" and there is no version for Vista. They have a version for Windows 2K/XP and one for Windows XP 64bit.
Should I use on of those and if not, then what?
    UPDATE (from me):
I took a chance and found a Realtek AC'97 driver for Vista.
    http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Realtek-AC-97-Audio-Codec-Driver-Vista-6183-Beta-Download-18114.html
I went to install it and the install hung.  So, I closed one of the install windows and then the InstallShield app continued like it was working.  So, I hit "Restart my computer".  Well, the reboot hung too.  So, I reset the PC manually.
When the computer came back up, the sound worked.  Hard to tell if this will fix it for good but it's promising.  Chaotic.  Unpredictable.  Annoying.
    REPLY #2:
Before you tried updating drivers, did you try rebooting 1st?
I'm just trying to determine if rebooting your system is what resolved the issue - thank you
    UPDATE II (from me):
My computer is behaving the same way it was before.  AUDIODG.EXE taking up 80-100% of my CPU and the sound not working.
    Any other ideas?

Small update: Despite my intelligence, good looks and vast experience I use Google sometimes. To my surprise this file turns out to be a Windows one. Here is someone who is much happier, and since it is some way in my line of thinking I'll quote it, but you might take my previous advice as well:

"- Open up msconfig.exe > Manage startup programs.
    - Disable ALL Realtek entries
    - Close msconfig.exe
    - Right-click on the speaker icon > Audio devices > Speakers (properties)
    - Go to the enhancements tab
    - Check the box to disable all audio enhancements
    - Close the menu
    - Right-click on the speaker icon > Recording devices
    - Disable all your microphones (yeah..., the actual problem seems to come
    from voice inputs rendering..)
    - Close the menu
    - Restart your computer"

  • Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.

I have been a happy user of Firefox for many years. Around last April first I opened Firefox and was offered an update to v 4.42.0.0 which I accepted. Installation seemingly went well. I forget now exactly what happened but the result has been that ever since April 1 I haven’t been able to open the Firefox browser when clicking on the Firefox icon. My computer now was running very slowly. I tried to uninstall Firefox, but a popup told me I couldn’t because Firefox was in use. This confused me because I couldn’t see it being used. Only now I have found that on Task Manager processes that “firefox.exe” was consuming 99 % of the CPU. After removing firefox.exe by clicking End Process my computer ran better. I uninstalled Firefox I had on my computer and installed Firefox 5.0. Unfortunately I have the same problems: Firefox does not open when clicking on the icon, the firefox.exe process consumes 99 % of the CPU and my computer runs slowly.

Born2die! Brilliant. I am a desktop clicker and never knew Firefox had a safe mode.
    Thank You!
I was unable to start in safe mode initially. The second time I disabled all of the Add-Ons and she started up just fine. I enabled them one by one hoping to track down the culprit but the problem seems to have gone away.
BTW I am running ver. 3.6.8 (in response to cor-el's earlier post) and
Firefox is in the process of downloading 3.6.10 (which I am starting to think may have been what caused this whole problem to begin with)
Incidentally, whats up with all of the Java Console Add Ons?
    I have:
Java Console 6.0.11, Java Console 6.0.13, Java Console 6.0.15
Java Console 6.0.17, Java Console 6.0.20, and Java Console 6.0.21
What are they? Do I need them? Can I uninstall them? Is this due to using Open Office?
Also, .NET Framework 0.0.0 Should I uninstall it?

You can disable the plug-in container for one or two plug-ins, or for all the plug-ins it works for. <br />

When my computer slows or nearly stops - I start Windows Task Manager and see that the process BTHelpbrowser.exe is taking 99%of my CPU and 44,095K of my memory ...WHY ????
I have tried deleting the process - but that doesn't seem to work - the only way is to re-boot ! AAARGHHH !
I can't find anywhere on the BT help website where I can post this question - so it's over to 'the community' to help..Please.

    Hi Guys
There have been a number of improvements made to our Desktop Help, for instance we now use the Windows OS wireless manager, and we also now use Internet Explorer as our browser with the option of a BT Yahoo toolbar. This does work with windows XP, Vista and Win7 32 bit version. Approximately 2 million people have Desk Top Help installed and it has helped fix a huge number of issues so I think it’s a great piece of kit and well worth an install.
    @Evenly
What version of Desk Top Help do you have?
If you’re not quite sure, the best thing to do is remove what you have at the moment with the following instructions:
    1. First make sure old Desktop Help is uninstalled (start All Programs->BT Broadband Desktop Help->Uninstall)…check add/remove programs too for any sign.
    2. In task manager if you see the following – remove it:
    a) BTHelpNotifier.exe
    b) McciTrayApp.exe
    c) McciServiceHost.exe
    3. If you see McciCMService.exe please stop it in services (control Panel ->Administrative Tools->Services)
    4. In registry delete the following hives (to start regedit do  Start->Run->Regedit):
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Motive
    - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Motive
    Restart the PC
You can then download the latest version of Desktop Help and install it from here
Let us know how you get on.
    Thanks,
    Stephanie

My computer is a Dell with 4bg RAM. I sude this pc before with itunes and ipod with no problmes. I appreciate any help on this

I'm having the same issue for more than a month.  When it's not open it's draing the cpu making the pc run slow and when open the cpu is maxxed at 100% that the I can barely use the computer and can't sync.  And I only use it to back up and sync.  Just downloaded the new version today thinking it would help but it didn't.  Interesting to see if anyone has any answers.

  • Explorer.exe uses too much CPU cycles (roughly 50%)... How can I fix this?

    Hi everyone,
In the last two days I have noticed a serious loss in system performance.  The first thing I do when I come accross a performance issue is to make sure that I don't have any scheduled automatic scans running in the background, such as my antivirus.  If they aren't, I then open the task manager and check to see what process(es) is(are) causing the performance issue based on CPU usage.  I discovered that explorer.exe is now regularly using approximately 50% of my CPU power AT ALL TIMES (with fluctuations ranging from as low as 35% to as high as 99%, but 45%-55% is the most common range).
Now I thought this might have been some sort of fluke, so I rebooted several times, and in all cases I find explorer.exe continues to use this hefty amount of CPU power.  This persists even if I leave the system alone (running, but not being used) for 15 minutes or more.
This is causing major performance issues with trying to run any/all other applications on the system, and even worse performance issues if I try to use explorer for something such as directory navigation, file searching, or file access.
I recently made an update to Windows (about a day before this problem arose), so I thought that might be the cause of this, so I ran a system restore to the restore point made before the install.  That didn't fix the problem.  Since the problem has only started in the last two days, I restored to a point three days ago.  That didn't fix it either.  I have since tried to restore to points 5 and 7 days old, and neither of those worked to fix this problem either.
I can use the task manager to end-task explorer.exe, and then restart it using "new task" from the file menu, and this seems to correct the problem.  After doing such a "restart" of explorer.exe, the process no longer uses 50% of my CPU power, and instead uses only 0%-20% depending on what I'm doing.  This, however, is not a viable long-term solution for a couple of reasons:  1) it screws up my tray icons, causing many to disappear even though their parent programs/processes are still running, and causing others to appear even though they shouldn't be there; and 2) subsequent instances of explorer.exe such as for directory navigation still have some performance problems and are prone to crashes.
I need to know how to repair or replace explorer.exe without having to format my hard drive and re-install (either from scratch or using a system recovery disc).  I can try using some sort of shell replacement such as Aston, Emerge, or GeoShell, but I shouldn't have to do that.
It may be that one of my other startup applications is causing some sort of compatibility issue, but that seems unlikely since I haven't made any changes to the system, nor installed any new software other than standard windows updates.
I need help, advice, suggestions, etc., or really anything at all that I can try that might fix this problem.  In the meantime, I am going to boot into safe mode to see if explorer.exe has problems even then (which would solidly indicate a corruption of explorer.exe rather than a compatibility issue or anything else).
Please help if you can.  For reference, I am using an HP Pavilion dv9700 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC, running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit with Service Pack 1.  I have an Intel Core2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz CPU and 3GB of RAM.  My explorer.exe file gives the following information from the Details tab of its Properties window:  file version is 6.0.6001.18000; product version is 6.0.6000.16386; file size is 2.79MB; and modification date is 1/20/2008 at 6:24pm.  As far as I know, that is all correct information and does not indicate that the program file has been replaced by any sort of malicious software.  I also ran a complete scan with AVG Antivirus and found no viruses or other malicious software anywhere on the system (unless you count tracking cookies).
Thank you in advance for any help

     Edward Lin wrote:
I have exactly the same problem!!!  And I concluded that the “AUTO CONNECT” function is the main reason of causing the CPU usage.  If I uncheck the “AUTO CONNECT” from the saved wi-fi connection, then the CPU would remain claim.
But.. Still, it’s very annoying.  So I formatted the hard drive and restore to the original factory condition.  Initially, it was working ok.  But after WINDOW UPDATES, the same problem happens again!!!!!!  May this be the bug from Microsoft??
Any thought??  Any Fix?  Please help!!!!
Yes, I did notice that the problem started after I did a Windows Update.  I can't remember which update it was, but the strange thing about it was that I couldn't fix the problem by restoring the system to a restore point that was made BEFORE the update.  Since I hadn't made any other changes to the system between when it worked and when it stopped working, I can only assume that the update caused the problem, and as such I believe it IS Microsoft's fault.
As to the Auto-Connect feature, I hadn't even thought of that, but since I use my internet ALL THE TIME, it would be really annoying to have to manually connect every boot up.
Which brings me back to the workaround.  If you have Auto-Connect enabled, and you disable WLAN AutoConfig and set it to Manual in your Services interface, then reboot the system, does it solve the CPU issues?  If the answer is yes, then you can do what I'm doing:
    1.  Go to Start, then in the search box type "task" and you should see the Task Scheduler come up as an option.
    2.  Open the Task Scheduler and click on "Create Task..." (by default this should be on the right-hand side of the window in the Actions pane).
    3.  In the General tab, give the task a name and (optionally) a description, and put a check mark in the box at the lower left that says "Run with highest privileges".
    4.  In the Triggers tab, add a trigger.  In the new window, choose "At log on" from the dropdown box at the top, set it to run for "Any user", and then head to the advanced settings section of the window.  Put a check mark in the box for "Delay task for:" and set the delay for one minute.  Make sure that there is a check mark in the box for "Enabled".  Then click OK.
    5.  In the Actions tab, add an action.  In the new window, make sure that "Start a program" is selected in the drop down box at the top (should be the default choice).  In the field where you specify the program to run, type in "SC".  In the "Add arguments (optional):" field, type in "Start wlansvc".  Then click OK.
    6.  Go through the other tabs to make sure you're happy with all of the other settings.  The default values should be just fine, but feel free to change them if you want to.  Then click OK.
    7.  Make sure that WLAN AutoConfig is still set to Manual.
    8.  Re-enable your Auto-Connect feature.
    9.  Reboot the system.
About 60 seconds after you log into your user account you should see a black command window flash onto the screen and then disappear again.  That is your automatic task running and starting up the WLAN AutoConfig servicve.  Another 30-60 seconds later and you should have access to your wireless network and the internet, and you don't have to interact with it or manually start anything.  You can also try setting the task delay to 30 seconds rather than 1 minute, but on my system that wasn't a long enough delay to prevent the CPU usage issues, whereas 1 minute was sufficient.  On my system, it enables the wireless before the system even finishes loading up my normal startup applications like my antivirus, so Idon't even notice a slowdown on the bootup process, let alone any wait time before I can use my internet.
This isn't a fix, and what we really need is for Microsoft to figure out what they did wrong, and fix it, but in the meantime, this works.
    Good luck
On a side note:  Unless Microsoft gets busy on fixing Vista so that it's backwards compatible with my old games, I'm still going to downgrade to XP (like a LOT of people have been doing for various reasons)... assuming I can find XP compatible hardware drivers anyway.  Right now I can get more of my games to run under Linux than I can under Vista, despite the fact that they were programmed to run in a DirectX Windows environment only... that's simply unacceptable.

  • The plugin-container.exe is using 100% cpu usage???

After I open a few different pages or tabs within the pages, the plugin-container.exe max's my cpu usage and the system hangs horribly. It comes back and then hangs again. The plugin-container is reasonable new, because I don't recall seeing it in the Task Manager. Is there a way to fix this?? I know it's related to some apple piece of garbage software that I could totally do without if that helps.
    Thanks

Plugin-container was introduced in Firefox 3.6.4 to run certain plugins in isolation from the browser, so that when an offending plugin crashes, it does not crash the entire browser, just the tab with the offending plugin. There is information about plugin-container and a method to disable plugin-container in the following article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins
If you disable plugin-container, your entire browser will crash if a plugin crashes. If you choose to disable plugin-container, restart Firefox to be sure that plugin-container closes; once started, plugin-container remains open until you restart Firefox.

  • Mail goes to 100% CPU and becomes unresponsive on one e-mail

Until this morning, I've had no problems with Mail. A business associate sent me an e-mail as a reply to a conversation spanning several weeks with a small PDF attachment. When I went to read the e-mail on my MacBook Pro, Mail became unresponsive with the "loading panel" twirling in the e-mail pane. CPU load went to 100% and remained there. I found that if I clicked on another mailbox, eventually (minutes later) it would become selected and CPU load would drop back down to normal. Tried it several times with the same results.
My mail server filters out spam and forwards all e-mails to my gmail account so that I have all of my e-mails on my iPhone. I found the offending e-mail on my iPhone and found that it opened just fine and the attachment opened fine too. Thinking that the e-mail had somehow become corrupted, I deleted it from my MacBook Pro then forwarded the message from my iPhone to the account used by my MacBook Pro. When I went to read the forwarded e-mail on my MBP, the same problem occurred. From what I can see in my iPhone there's nothing unusual about the e-mail, just some text and the small PDF attachment. I can open other e-mails with PDF attachments fine. It's just this one e-mail that gives Mail a problem.
Here's what I've done so far:
Using Disk Utility, I did a repair on my MBP volume - no problems found.
I did a permissions repair - nothing unusual.
I did a rebuild on all of my mail folders - everything went okay.
I disabled and uninstalled Letter Opener Pro (the only plug-in I use with Mail)
    I disabled Norton.
Still no joy. I realize I can just delete the e-mail and go on with life but ideally I would like to be able to solve the problem so it doesn't happen again. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you solve it?

Safari has been known to cause cpu usage to spike. If nothing else, report the pages to Apple using "Report Bugs to Apple" under the Safari menu.
One of the Safari issues in the OS X 10.4.4 update was:
Addresses an issue in which some websites, such as www.cbsnews.com, could cause CPU usage to spike unnecessarily, or cause Safari to stop responding, unless Safari's Enable JavaScript preference was deselected.
It is possible that they didn't get it completely fixed.
I have also noticed that Safari slows down after being open for an extended period or if I have tons of tabs open, although it is not as bad as it once was. Additionally, regardless of anything else, it does appear that some sites slow down Safari's performance and/or spike the cpu usage until I close that tab. (I've had this happen to me with Firefox as well, by the way).

  • Can I disable plugin-container.exe in 20.0.1 and still stream video?

When I try to stream TV shows with Firefox, I receive high Firefox disc usage warnings from my Norton antivirus. I believe this is due to the gigantic plugin-container.exe that Firefox apparently runs the Flash player inside of. When I look at it in Taskmaster plugin-container has been using 150 k + after just a few minutes and continues to go higher the longer I watch. If I continue to watch without doing anything, eventually the video begins to stutter and then stops while the sound keeps playing. My system slows down to the point where it takes 5 min to stop the player after clicking the control, and a half hour for my system to process the commands to shut down Firefox and restart.
I've been able to work around this by putting the AV into extended Silent Mode to save CPU and by closing the browser after each and every episode, then reopening it again. Obviously this isn't an optimal solution.
I tried shutting down plugin-container using the Taskmaster but this also killed my video. When I closed the window and restarted the video, the plug-in-container came back. In this current version of Flash 20.0.1 is there a way to disable it forever that will also allow me to stream video? IE8 didn't play nice with web pages but Firefox isn't playing nice with video streaming. Is there a fix that doesn't involve a new PC?

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. We know the problem isn't with Flash because I was running it without huge background files or lock-up up while using IE8.
Installing an older version of Flash isn't an option because newer versions resolve some of the memory usage and flickering problem that older Flash versions caused on the new Hulu site. Some sites also require the newest patch and return an error message if an older version is detected.
I'm not sure what protected Flash mode does or doesn't do and hate to mess around with Flash when we already know it's been running without issues on my system using the other browser.
What I DO know is that the problem only started occurring when I made the switch from IE8 to Firefox. This weekend I had it happen again when I only had Firefox open and the Norton AV running out of Silent Mode in the background. Only the Flash thumbnails on the Hulu home page were active, not the Flash player and I started to get slowdown and lose mouse control.
I posted the issue over on the Norton forum also but don't expect a workaround. I think disabling that huge plugin-container file might help. By the time I've watched one video both Firefox and plug-in container are up around 200k each, much, much, much larger than anything else running on my system.
So is disabling plugin-containter still viable? Firefox crashing is never going to happen, if plug-in container freezes up my system first. Continually closing and reopening Firefox as a workaround doesn't seem to be way it was intended to perform.

  • HT1338 My MacBook Air is very slow. Every time I click the mouse, the spinning wheel appears and remains for up to 30 seconds. Can you help me?

My MacBook Air is very slow. Every time I click the mouse, the spinning wheel appears and remains for up to 30 seconds before the screen changes. This has been happening the past 24 hours. Any ideas?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:

  • In Oracle 10g,nmupm.exe  runs at 100% CPU usages

Hi There this is Bal Mukund Sharma from Computer Associates,HYD.I have recently installed Oracle 10g on windows 2000 server with 1 GB RAM,i have observed that nmpsupm.exe which is under the bin directory under c:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Db_1\nmupm.exe.is consuming all CPU resources.
when i set all Oracle services to manual and restarted the machine then it shows normal CPU usages. Can you please suggest something regarding this.
    Regards
    Mukund.

This is a known issue, see here

Where are the 74 seconds unaccounted for seconds (I might have calculated it incorrectly, but I arrived at 88.08 seconds of unaccounted for time: 721.56 total - 1.36 parse - 632.12 db file sequential reads)?
It is interesting that the maximum wait for a single block read reported by TKPROF is 0.49 seconds - this might be an indication of excessive competition for the server's CPU - processes are waiting in the CPU run queue, and therefore not on the CPU. As Toon indicated, 632.12 of the 721.56 seconds were spent waiting for single block reads to complete with 46,544 blocks read. Note also that the query executed at dep=1, and TKPROF may be providing misleading information about what actually happened during those executions. An example of misleading information:

Back to the possibility of CPU starvation causing lost time. Another test with an otherwise idle server, followed by a second test with the same server having 240 other processes fighting for CPU resources (a simulated load).

On your database platform with single block reads, it might be possible that the time in the CPU run queue is not always counted in the db file sequential read wait time or the CPU wait time - what if your operating system is slow at returning timing information to the database instance due to CPU saturation - this might explain the 74 (or 88) lost seconds.

Hope that the following can help some of you having the same issue :
When I run the Network Diagnostics in iTunes. And I got the following error :
"Secure link to iTunes Store failed".
So I followed this tread and this is what I tried so far :
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3911927?start=0&tstart=0
    ipconfig /flushdns         => same issue
netsh winsock reset       => same issue
Followed the kb TS4123  => no other Winsock Providers that Bonjour
    SFC /SCANNOW    => same issue
    ipconfig /release    => same issue
    ipconfig /renew         => same issue
netsh winsock reset catalog   => same issue
After doing all this tests when I run the Network Diagnostics I still get the same error :
"Secure link to iTunes Store failed".
The strange thing is that I tried to start again the ITunes match and it's seems to work so far. 41 items uploaded and no crash so far (before it was  always crashing before I could reach 10 upload).
