CWDM SFP to SFP+

Presently we have 3 CWDM-MUX-4-SF1 chassis connecting three sites.
We are using 1000 SFP modules.  We would like to upgrade the connection speeds to 10 gig.  Can we do this with the hardware we have in place and upgrade just the SFP modules?  Or do we have to start from scratch?

According to table-1 in this link CWDM-MUX-4-SF1 is gig only.

  • X2 vs sfp , gbic ,sfp+

    Hi all ,
what is difference between the following optical products . Which product is best .how do i campare advantagous and disadvantagous
    a) X2
    b) SFP with TwinGig Converter Module
    c) SFP/SFP +
    d) GBIC
does all the above have two variants for single mode and multimode ?
whats the difference between singe mode and multimode fiber ?
    Thanks

The differences between X2, sfp, gbic, etc transceivers are typically just physical.  Which type to select relates to what has been designed in by the manufacturer to be used in the equipment platform you have selected for your network (See link to Compatibility Guide below).  Generally speaking, each transceiver style will support the various specifications for link length and fiber type.

Singlemode fiber has a smaller optical core, enabling longer link lengths using expensive lasers.  Multimode fiber has a larger core, designed for shorter link lengths, but uses lower cost LEDs and Lasers.  The link below is a great resource for getting an understandable overview of fiber optics.

  • SFP+ AND SFP

Can I stick an SFP transceiver module in a SFP+ port in a Cisco Nexus 5K for example if I need to connect a fast ethernet switch with a 1 Gbps SFP uplink port in Huawei S9300? I saw this Nexus's ports are 1/10 Gbps.
Does it depend on a switch module or is there a general rule, that they should be compatible?

Not possible.  Cisco's SFP are single-speed only.  If you use SFP then this is GigabitEthernet only.  Nexus won't support 100BaseFX SFP.

  • Will on-board Gigabit Ethernet ports on a Cisco 3845 support a 100 Mb SFP?

    Hi,
This is a very specific question - hopefully someone has tested this or run into this scenario...
I was trying to connect a Cisco 3845 router to a 100 Mbps circuit. Specifically, I was trying to connect this circuit to the on-board Gigabit Ethernet port (Gig 0/0). This is the port that can be used as either an RJ45 or SFP slot. The only SFP I had was a multi-mode 100 Mbps SFP. When I hooked it up to Gi0/0, I got a message saying the SFP type wasn't supported on the chassis.
I was able to deploy the 3845 and since then I haven't had the correct hardware to recreate the exact scenario. Has anyone experienced this? Is it simply because Gigabit interface on a 3845 won't support a Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) SFP?
    Thanks.

Not all SFP's will just plug in and work. Here are the SFP's that are considered compatible with the 3800 series ISR's.
GLC-LH-SM= Gigabit Ethernet SFP, LC connector, LX/LH transceiver
GLC-SX-MM= Gigabit Ethernet SFP, LC connector, SX transceiver
    GLC-ZX-SM= 1000BASE-ZX SFP
CWDM-SFP-1470= Coarse wavelength-division multiplexing (CWDM) 1470-nm SFP Gigabit Ethernet and 1G/2G Fibre Channel (FC)
CWDM-SFP-1490= CWDM 1490-nm SFP Gigabit Ethernet and 1G/2G FC
CWDM-SFP-1510= CWDM 1510-nm SFP Gigabit Ethernet and 1G/2G FC
CWDM-SFP-1530= CWDM 1530-nm SFP Gigabit Ethernet and 1G/2G FC

  • SFP module not showing up as interface choice

    I am trying to configure a 3825 router w/IOS 12.4(3d).
When I install a GLC-SX-MM module, I cannot see the module in the sh diag results and therefore not a choice in the list of interfaces.
When I view the logs, the insertion is logged.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
There are two Gigabit Ethernet ports on Cisco 3800 Series systems. Port 1 is a fixed 10/100/1000BASE-T RJ-45. Port 0 can choose between 10/100/1000BASE-T RJ-45 and an SFP module slot. SFP modules are optional.
A new command-line interface (CLI) allows you to choose between the two media types. The "SFP" option will only come up if there is a SFP module plugged into the slot. RJ-45 is the default.
Please see the following configurations to get this port working:
    Cisco3825#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
    Cisco3825(config)#interface gigabitEthernet 0/0
    Cisco3825(config-if)#media-type ?
    rj45 Use RJ45 connector
    sfp Use SFP connector
    Cisco3825(config-if)#media-type sfp
After this you should be able to use and see the SFP on the router. Hope this helps. :)

  • Cisco 4900M integrated X2 ports, CVR-X2-SFP10G and SFP-10G-SR

    Hi,
We are going to order two(2) cisco 4900M switches for core and twelve (12) 2960S switches for access (4 stacks with 3 switches each), connected to the core with 10G MM optical paths (up to 300M each).  In addition I have one gigabit half-card but it is not related to my questions here. Please see my attached diagram.
    So my questions are:
    1. Point 1.Can we use integrated eight X2 ports of every of the both 4900M switches as plugging into four of them four convertors CVR-X2-SFP10G and to plug on every of the convertors sfp tranceivers SFP-10G-SR - as it is described on the diagram, or I need for something more in addition to described? I found only some minimum soft releases to use as requirement to use these convertors and sfp tranceivers, but is there something additional I need?
Note:I'm asking that because Dynamic Conf Tool doesn't give me to do such configuration, actually these convertors and SFPs are missing there at all, but it sometimes happens with some products...  In documentation it is described this should work (if I didn't pass something which is my main consern and why I'm asking here).
2.Point 3.If this shouldn't work, the other alternative (not described in my diagram) is to use X2-10GB-SR modules without any SFPs - just ot use SC connectors for the optical cables instead of LC. So my question in that case is will 10G links work between X2-10GB-SR at one side and SFP-10G-SR at the other side where I have 2960S switches and this is the only option? Is is expected to have some problems in that scenario?
Note:Actually if Point 1 is workable I prefer to use it instead of Point 2 because of minor price optimization when using SFPs with convertors in comparisson to X2-10GB-SR.
    3. If the both variants are possible, which one is preffered and why, what advantages does it have (for example low latency of something else)?
    Thank You in Advance
    Asen

Just for your information, a fiber link does not care if one end of the fiber has an GBIC (SC-type connector) and the other end has a SFP (LC-type of connector); or any other transceiver footprint (X2, CFP, etc.)..  The thing that is important is that each module is the same specification, and matches the fiber type and link length of the network (10GBASE-SX in this example).
    Good luck.

  • SFP & LC Connections Questions

    Hi there,
I'm trying to get a small SAN set up in the video department I work in.
I have a question about fibre connections- If I'm using an Xserve RAID (SFP) with a QLogic 5200 (SFP) switch run to PCs with PCI Fibre Cards (LC), do I need to somehow convert the SFP connection coming off the switch going to the PCI cards with LC?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

    Yes, you will.
You can get an SFP to LC transceiver for $99 (I think) from the Apple Store, that will allow you to use optical cables with the Xserve RAID (or from the switch).
Note you can mix and match copper and optical cables -- you can run the copper SFP to SFP cables from the Xserve RAID to the switch, and then run optical from the switch to your fibre channel card.

  • 8510 SFP support

        Hi All
I found following spec in 8510 controller data sheet
    Interfaces and Indicators
    • 2 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces
    • Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) options (only Cisco SFPs supported): SFP-10G-SR
    • LED indicators: Network Link, Diagnostics
    • 1x Service Port: 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet (RJ-45)
However, I need Long Range SFP, i.e SFP-10G-LR
    Would that be supported?

hehe. Me the same. I guess you also wanted to connect the controller to a physical diverse VSS or N7K or other system ? , now i am going to have it connected to two seperate N5K (no vpc) in Active/Standby mode.

At my shop, we always use auto negotiate and this will work with nearly all devices with 2, 4, 8 Gb except 1Gb. We don't use adapters, direct SFP to SFP.
Hope thie may help you a bit.

  • 3750 E with SFP-10G-SR

    Hi,
I have a WS-C3750E-24TD switch. I want to connect SFP-10G-SR to this switch. But it has X2 slot and documents says that SFP-10G-SR can be pluged in to this device. How it is possible.
    Thanks.

To use the SFP+ transceiver, SFP-10G-SR, in your X2 slot, you need to purchase a Cisco OneX converter,
CVR-X2-SFP10G=.  This solution allows you to start the migration to the smaller form factor 10G transceiver being used on most of the newer hardware.
Otherwise, you could use the standard X2 transceiver, X2-10GB-SR.
    Good luck!

    Hi
As I understand it, you can only use that cable with 3560s:
