Cycle Record Question

- Short-story - basically I want to use the least amount of button presses during the recording process...
Typical scenario ...
Let's say I have cycle record from bars 1 through bar 4.
- Destructive editing is on
- after recording 4 bars - I decide I want to simply replace bar 3 only.
- if the in and out punch in record was set to bars 3 and 4 then when I go in on bar the three - *it also erases bar 4* ouch - which maybe I wanted to keep...
- is there a way - without resetting the punch in and out to only bar 3 - to not erased bar 4 also...?
- so I know that I could take out the destructive recording - and then manually erase the part I don't like - and then going to record... but that is also a lot of "button pressing"
- it seems as though cycle recording mixed with punch in and punch out could be easier ... maybe there is something I do not understand... any ideas?

Just to add my two cents worth - I use Autodrop all the time and it is an incredibly useful tool for re-recording very precise bits of of midi or audio.
If you are trashing bar 4 of your cycle record when you only mean to replace bar 3 then I am sure that is because the left and right auto drop locators are not set accurately.
Here is my basic methodology for using auto drop:
1 - set up a musically coherent Cycle with key commands " Set left locator" and "set right locator" ie for or 8 bars. ( Very important that you have available a key command that snaps the SPL exactly to the bar).
2 - set up within the broader Cycle and 'inner' recording zone using key commands "Set Left Auto drop" and "Set right auto drop" you can then cycle record to your heart's content in the zone that you really need to replace without messing up anything else.
Also if you choose a musically sensible 'macro cycle" then you have time to think and breath before the sequencer reaches the point that you want to actually record in.
Once you become familiar with this it takes literally seconds to re-record very precise bits of your arrangement

  • Cycle recording and auto punch

    Hi
I am just wondering if it's possible to use Cycle Recording and Auto Punch together? It doesn't seem to work for me. Has anyone else been able to do this? I would like to be able to cycle through a section of, say 8 bars, and punch in and out at, say bars 3 to 6.

    Hi Thanks for that
Another question... when I record several takes, the original track is at the bottom of the group of takes and take 1 is above that. Take 2 is above that. Earlier today I was workling with takes and they were listed in the other order. Is there somewhere I can adjust the order in which takes are displayed?
    Thanks

  • Problem with cycle recording

Greetings, folks. I've run into what I think is an odd problem in cycle recording in an audio track. What I wanted to do was to automatically record multiple takes of a guitar solo. Consulting the manual and both the LP7 and Advanced LP7 guides and set up what I thought was the proper configuration for doing that: under File > Song settings > Recording, I checked the "Auto mute" and "Auto Create Tracks in Cycle Record" checkboxes, I defined a cycle region, I defined a shorter autodrop zone within that cycle region, armed the track, then hit record. I thought that Logic would then create a new track with each cycle pass while I was playing, and that those tracks would play through the audio object of the track that had been armed for recording.
What happened instead was that, after a single pass, recording would switch off (though it would continue to cycle in playback), so that in order to record multiple passes I needed to stop, reset the track to the beginning of the cycle region, and then hit record again. The audio regions I recorded on successive takes also don't display on individual tracks. I'd like to be able to see them all in the arrange window and be able to play them through the original track's audio object for editing purposes, but I can't figure out how to do that either (without creating multiple tracks and then manually dragging each take from the audio window).
So I guess I have two questions: first, what did I do wrong in attempting to cycle record, and then how can I view all of the individually recorded takes in the arrange window?
    Thanks,
    Trent

Jord, when I called it a "phenomenon" I did not mean to describe it as a bug or fault - you're right, it is a desireable feature of cycle recording.
As far as your question goes: Suppose you are recording track-by-track a song with two parts, an acoustic guitar and vocals, and the acoustic guitar part has an intricate eight-bar solo that needs to be redone. The advantage of using cycle recording and autodrop here is that you could define a cycle region giving you a two-bar intro (say) to the part you need to rerecord and a couple of bars of outro, making it easier to accomplish a musical phrasing. For example, say you're a vocalist trying to record a one-octave scale, and your pitch is off on the "fa-so." With cycle recording and autodrop, you could sing along with the "do-re-mi" and settle your pitch before rerecording the notes you flubbed, whereas (as I understand it) if you're just rerecording the "fa-so" in cycle mode, you won't get the "do-re-mi" as an intro after the first pass and would then just hope that you're nailing the notes you need to rerecord cold.
You can combine cycle recording with autodrop in Midi - why not in audio? It's a desireable feature in both.

  • Multi-track recording question

    Multi-track recording question
Hey, just need some help on multi tracking using audition, hope this is the right forum?
Wanted to know if anyone has a clue about assigning inputs from an audio interface to separate tracks on a recording program (ie: Adobe audition)
I record live with my band alot, and have every amp and the kit mic'd up, but how do i make it so that each microphone is recording to a different track on the PC?
My interface is an M audio fast track ultra, if that is of any use.
    Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

In Audition, assuming that you can see all of the inputs available in the Hardware Setup, you find the right-facing arrow (input assign) on each track in MV's Main view, and you click on the box it's pointing to, go to Mono, and select the input you want for that particular track. The mono ones say [01M], [02M], etc. If you want to record a stereo track, then select the Stereo option where the inputs are paired and say [01S] et seq. This would have input 1 as left, input 2 as right.
If you can't see all of the inputs available, try selecting the ASIO driver in Hardware Setup...

  • Cycle recording

    Cycle recording on Garageband.
I want to change a small section of the recording.
It records the new recorded section but doesn't attach to the rest of the old recording.
If I choose the new recorded section the rest of the original recording disappears.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks Christoph
    I appreciate your time.
This is on a Real Instrument track. It's a vocal.
I get the impression that I'm able to re-record a section that I want to improve by putting the cycle section exactly where I want to replace, and it is replaced in the original recording.
    However I can't do it.
What is happening is that it records the new improved version but I can't work out how to incorporate it into the original recording.
If the new one is 2 and the original is 1.
    How do I incorporate 2 into 1?
When I play 2 it is only the new revised section. The rest of the song I want to keep is not there.
When I play 1 it is the old version, still with the bit I don't want and want to replace.
Without splitting and copying and pasting..... how do I add the new improved bit to the original recording using the cycle section?
    Thanks again

  • Auto Mute is not working when cycle recording in MIDI to a take folder

I'm hoping someone can provide insight into the problem I'm having in Logic X.  I'm attempting to record multiple takes of MIDI recording playing an e-kit through Addictive Drums.  I have gone into the MIDI recording options menu and selected "create take folders".  According to the manual, the previous take is supposed to be auto-muted when the cycle region resets so I can record the next take.  However, instead Logic is playing the previous region.  This did not happen when I cycle recorded in Garage Band and I'm hoping I am just doing something simple wrong.  I know there is an option to create a new track and mute the previous, but I don't want to create 7 or 8 new tracks when I should be able to put them in a take folder.  The auto-mute feature worked in the tutorial video on Lynda.com, so I'm wondering what I am doing wrong.  Any advice?

Upon further review, this problem seems to only appear when I work on projects that I import into Logic from GarageBand '11.  This is a HUGE glitch for my workflow, as I use cycle recording extensively while writing drum parts for songs and my biggest collaborating artist uses GB '11.  Does anyone know if there is something I'm missing?

  • Auto Create Tracks in Cycle Record in LP8?

I might be alone but used Auto Create Tracks in Cycle Record a lot in Logic 7. I sat down today to down some work and cant find the equivalent in LP 8 any where.
I use this to play a record a track then record again whilst listening to the original. Sometimes this will end up being as many as 8 tracks playing at the same time whilst another is being recorded.
Can this be done in LP8?
Sorry if this info is else where I have just spent a few hrs looking through the manual and this forum

  • Auto Create Track in Cycle Record NOT disengaging??

I was using Auto Create Track in Cycle Record, in the song settings recording menu, for multiple audio voice overs. Now that I want to record without this function, it is not deactivating when I disengage the selection in the song settings recordings menu.
Is there something I'm forgetting to do here? I'm 99% positive that the only way to engage this function was from the song settings recording menu.
If I record without Cycle engaged, the recording will stay on the one track selected. If i turn Cycle back on without Auto Create Track in Cycle Record activated, it reacts as though it was engaged. ???
    Please help, in a bind.
    Thanks!

Can someone help me please? is it a bug? or is it some sort of setting combination I need to discover.

  • Auto create audio tracks in cycle record Logic X without take folder

    Is this at all possible?
For audio not midi and I don't wan't to replace the audio each time,I would like to cycle record Audio takes and have Logic create a new track every time it loops-Like it was back in the day I think on Logic 7-without packing into a take folder.
I know it might just take getting used to but I cannot stand take folders
Please let me know if this is possible!
    Thanks in advance
    J:-)

Logic does have multi channel record ability, you just record arm the multiple instrument or midi tracks you want, and it'll play/record what ever is armed.
On the record till end of cycle and then move to a new track, I hear you, but you can't do it, logic used to make a new track at the end of a cycle when recording, but nowadays it sticks everything in a stupid take folder and there's no way ( that I've found ) of turning it off. Take folders have their uses, but not for every application.
I can't believe that Apple have have built a loop recorder that'll let you build up multiple parts ( like you're suggesting ) into Mainstage yet they haven't built this into logic. Maybe they will in the future, who knows. I hope so.
So yeah Christian if you want to build up loops as a performance, it's all there in Mainstage. It's called loopback by the way
There's a demo of it here (under live performance)

  • L9: Cycle Record Audio =  many passes...(only 2 takes showing)!

Can anyone try cycle record Audio... more than 3 passes in Logic 9?
I'm only getting 2 takes I can access and are listed/showing when I click the triangle . They will show in the Bin, but you would need to flatten and reveal the file to see the other passes & work with them.
    Midi seems ok.
    http://www.generate-music.com/L9cycletakes_bug.mov
3 different computers have this same weirdness.
For what it's worth... we still can't "punch in record" in cycle mode... without Logic dropping us out after the first pass.
Also, when will they give us a simple "keep last full cycle only" for Audio Record settings?

If I've understood you correctly, the "countdown" you are
describing is just the visual signal to let you know when to
    begin
the narration. It sounds like you are saying that you think
the recording is over when it hits "zero", but in fact, when it
hits "0", just begin speaking - and moving the mouse through the
    application to create the movie.
All of that is assuming you have first connected and
calibrated your microphone, and that the hardware is working
    correctly before you begin.
I disagree with your comment that there is EVER a time when
it might not be best to add audio narration after-the-fact, during
the editing stage. It is just a personal observation, but I believe
the "narration during recording" feature is the biggest mistake int
he history of this great application. It just shouldn't be done -
too much like patting your head and rubbing your stomach
simultaneously - requires coordination skills that are waaaaay
beyond those of the average bear. Create your movie complete with
actions, then during editing, add the audio to the movie. It's
quick, simple, and avoids problems with synchronization of hte
audio and the background changes in the movie ... that's just my
    opinion, though ...

  • Cycle recording, where is take 1,2,3

when I use "cycle" to do the recording,
where is the function/button that i should click in order to see
    "take 1, take 2, take 3" so
can choose the one to listen, or the ones i'll delete
    thanks

    Hi,
at the beginning of a multitake region, there should be a small triangle you can click on. And at the end of the region, there is another triangle inside a small circle.
The left one is to expand the region so that you can see all the takes (and can do quick swipe comping). The right triangle opens a menu where you can perform some tasks (i.E.: Select a specific take, reduce the takes to the current comp and so on)
    Cheers,

  • Nokia Lumia 1020 Recording Questions

I'm planning on recording a show that I am involved in with a Nokia Lumia 1020 (which I haven't actually got yet), but was wondering whether it's possible to use the 1020 as just a camcorder and live capture/save the video file to a laptop?
I've heard ways of doing it with a camcorder and live capturing it straight into Sony Vegas.
But getting a new phone sounds much better than getting a new camcorder or camera.
Also, one other reason for me thinking of using the 1020 is because the previous cameras we've used to record shows haven't been great at recording in a theatre and seem to get a bit drowned in light, since the theatre itself is dark (especially at the back where the camera will be) and the stage is flooded with bright stage lights, it often makes the dances and dancers look bad.
Do you think the Lumia 1020 would be alright with this situation?
    So, two questions there!
    Thanks,
    Joe!

I would be sure that you have nothing on your device memory to ensure that you have enough memory. it is going to record in 1080p unless you choose otherwise. so the file is going to be big.
I do not believe there is a way to record using your 1020 and have it live save to a memory outside of the device memory. at least, I have not heard of or seen anything to say this is possible.
coloring, imo, should be pretty good. so long as there isn't any lights aimed directly at the camera. I have been very happy with its videos that it creates.

  • DNS Records Questions - TXT Files

Hello everyone,   I would like to preface this post with, this is my first time dealing with DNS records.  However, the instructions seem a little confusing, so i would like your professional feedback.
Currently using Godaddy for hosting.  Ill start with the instructions, then my set up, my result and my questions.
    Instructions:
You will be adding two separate TXT entries to your DNS record - note - be sure that you do not add any carriage returns when copying the key, below:
First Entry (This is called the DKIM policy record):
Name:  _domainkeyTXT:   "t=y; o=~;"If your domain is 'foo.com', then the 'name' entry will look like this when it is displayed as: "_domainkey.foo.com"
Second Entry: (This is called the 'selector record' and includes a public crypto key):
    Name: key1._domainkeyTXT: "k=rsa\; p=MFwwDQYJKoZIhvcNAQEBBQADSwAwSAJBAKQrQeUnNX/CQBIXWqeHc8lKl+EwhGKzPuDRbDjnN2Xzl8N4Fc2oQ6R+opnEM6U4x4p
    3NggEyNg8Mp2W6oUYpAECAwEAAQ=="
If your domain is 'foo.com', then the 'name' entry for this will look like this when it is displayed: "key1._domainkey.foo.com"
    That's it!
You can send a test message to a yahoo email address, then select Actions->View Full Headers in Yahoo
when you view the email.  If you have configured DKIM correctly, the header information for the email will include a line similar to:
    Authentication-Results: mta1084.mail.mud.yahoo.com  from=mypinpointe.com; domainkeys=pass (ok)
    Fisrt Entrey
    Hostname: @
    TXT Value: _domainkey.mydomain.com:   t=y; o=~;
    TTL: 1/2 hour
    Second Entry:
    Hostname: @
    TXT Value: key1._domainkey.mydomain.com: k=rsa; p=MFwwDQYJKoZIhvcNAQEBBQADSwAwSAJBAKQrQeUnNX/CQBIXWqeHc8lKl+EwhGKzPuDRbDjnN2Xzl8N4Fc2oQ6R+opnEM6U4x4p3NggEyNg8Mp2W6oUYpAECAwEAAQ==
    TTL: 1/2 hour
    Results
    1. a really long string of code, but when you search for it here is the result  Doesnt say domainkeys=pass (ok):
          Authentication-Results: mta1466.mail.gq1.yahoo.com  from=giglinxusa.com; domainkeys=neutral (no sig);  from=crapemyrtle.mypinpointe.com; dkim=pass (ok)
    Questions
    1. Should the TXT value include "", like they have it in the instructions?
    2. In the first entry, should there be so many spaces after the .com:    t=y
    3. What are carriage returns? (assuming spaces)

    Hello,
but I don't understand anything else then you will use Godaddy.
What is the aim of this? Connecting an email domain to your internal network or about web services? Please be more specific in your description what you are trying to achieve.
