Cyrillic client

Dear Gurus,
I have another idea and just would like some feedback if its feasable or not.
We are converting to unicode and the our issues come from the
Cyrillic code page..  1500.
Since this code page is unique to only 1 client,  would
It be possible to build a u201CMigrationu201D system with this client only .. Then convert  the "cyrillic client" to unicode.
Eliminating the possibility of false language assignment.
Then importing the converted unicode client back to the Master UC system (which only contained latin-1)
Thanks
Lawrence

Hi Lawrence,
technically, it should be possible to transfer the client to another system, do the conversion and copy it back to your main Unicode system.
However:
1) This will certainly add time to your downtime,  client export and import cannot be done in uptime ...
2) How do you handle client independent data - like e.g. report texts ?
3) As far as I know, none or only a few customers have chosen this approach - so there are probably more issues and it is  not tested ...
On the other hand side many customers have used successfully transaction SPUMG for an MDMP conversion.
In addition, it will be very easy for you to distinguish between Russian and Latin-1 in the vocab and reprocessing logs  ...
Therefore I would recommend to use the standard tools (SPUMG and SUMG).
Best regards,

  • IChat, ICQ and non-unicode ICQ clients (cyrillic=latin accented letters)

I would like to use iChat to connect to my ICQ account
If somebody with an older ICQ client sends me cyrillic I get garbage (latin accented letters).
If they're using newer ICQ clients I'm getting the message in correct cyrillic.
This imho has something to do with using non-unicode encoding for the messages.
In other ICQ clients (e.g. Adium) I've used there was a setting specifying the encoding to use when there's no explicit encoding. Setting this to windows-1251 was solving the problem for me.
But I see no similar setting for iChat.
Can this be handled somehow ? Is there some preference somewhere ?

PS There is one thing you could try, namely setting the font used by iChat to one encoded as Win-1251. You can get some here, for example:
    http://web.ku.edu/~herron/fonts/download_fonts.html
Whether having these on your system will mess up anything else I don't know.
This didn't worked unfortunately. I'm still getting the text as accented latin letters. Apparently the network layer of iChat is translating them to unicode somehow.
And no : having these fonts installed haven't affected anything else on my system from what I can tell.

  • How Do you use Cyrillic Fonts (Russian) in InDesign CS4 or CS3

I have a headline in Russian a client sent me in an e-mail that I need to use on a poster I'm laying out in InDesign.
I downloaded ERUniverse cyrillic font, and when I paste the Russian headline in a text box and go to select ERUniverse cyrillic, there's no Russian!
Also, I go down to the bottom of my fonts there's Hebrew, Japanesse, Chinese fonts, etc...but no Russian.
Please help with instructions on how to use a cyrillic font!!!

I downloaded ERUniverse cyrillic font, and when I paste the Russian headline in a text box and go to select ERUniverse cyrillic, there's no Russian!
That font must not be Unicode enabled. An old hack to insert Cyrillic characters into a regular font was to replace "unused" characters with Cyrillic ones. So, to type a 'de' д, you would insert the character code for an 'ê'.
Modern fonts are Unicode enabled, which simply means that in every font Cyrillic characters are found in the same place. Thus, changing the font does not change the text.
If you are working on Windows, check the Character Map for fonts that support Cyrillic. Select 'Advanced view', Character set: Unicode, Group by: Unicode Subrange. A small window pops up, enumerating all possible Unicode groups. Scroll down and select 'Cyrillic'. Now the character map will only show these characters for each font, so simply scroll through your font list to see which one have them.
(And OSX no doubt has a similar feature.)
The older Windows system fonts Times New Roman, Arial, Georgia, Verdana, and the newer ones Calibri, Cambria, and Candara, and lots of the fonts that came with your InDesign installation support Cyrillic (at least Minion Pro and Myriad Pro do).
It's also possible the original text has not been typed using a Unicode font. If you need a quick check, select some of the text and select the font Arial Unicode (on a Mac, I think "LastResort" will do). If you see useful text, you're okay to go. If not, you have a huge problem. You will have to find the exact font that was used in the original document and use that, or use Find and Replace to change each character to the actual Cyrillic one (and you will need a hardcopy before you can do that).

  • Bug with Cyrillic-UTF-8 encoding in Outlook messages sent from iphone

Some time, during replay or forwarding mails, written in Cyrillic form iPhone3GS (iOS 4.0), iPhone send a format of the message UTF-8 and did not field the charset field.
In such case most of the windows client(Outlook, The BAT, Firefox) cannot recognize the message encoding automatically. Advanced clients have to use manual setting of the encoding.
In older iOS in iPhone2G i have't met such problem

  • How to handle different languages in Illustrator for big clients?

    Hi Guys,
I need small suggestio for 'How to handle different languages in illustrator for big clients'. For instance; Arabic, this is a language which  needs to be read from right to left instead of left to right. There are  other strange languages as well (Cyrillic, Chinese etc.). It happens  also that when you copy strange languages from a word file it will not  be easy to paste it the correct way in a .ai file. Besides that, it’s  also difficult to do a language check when we are not able to read it!. So,  to make a long story short, I want to figure out how we can deal with multiple language  circles?
Can you some please give me the solution for this...
    Thanks in advance...
    HARI

I take it you might come from an arabic background.
Here is how you can help yourself to some degree.
Google has a translation feature and service which is at the moment free. It is excellent.
Secondly if you are working with ME languages you really need the ME version of Illustrator or any other Creative Suites Application in order for it to work properly.
It, is also best to enable the language and the input for that language for your system on the Mac it is easy you go to the Language and text feature in theSystem Preferences, once enabled you can select the fro the menu bar under the American flag if you are in the US. Thst will appear once you have more than one language selected.
You select the language input you need and then a font for that language then paste and edit.
You need fonts on your computer that are of those languages as well.
How to manage this as a work flow well that is something you will have to work on yourself or hire a consultant who specializes in this area.
We had a few visit here when they have come across a snafu. So they exists.

  • Cyrillic fonts fo FCP

I've bought my iMac and FCE in Russia and Cyrillic fonts were pre-installed in my computer. In few days I will have to edit on Mac Book Pro that my client brings from UK. He told me that the computer has no Cyrillic fonts. But we will need to make Russian titles. I think the basic fonts may be installed from Mac OS discs. Isn't?
    Any other idea?
    Message was edited by: Valya

Thank you! And do you know if Lucida Grande can be used in FCP?
Sorry, I don't have FCP to test, but I would be surprised to find that the main system font used by OS X was not available to FCP. Are there fonts supplied by Apple with with OS X that do not work in that app?

  • Messages sent with Thunderbird do not get to recipient, but I can use other email clients that do. Settings are correct and I can check webmail and see in sent.

When I send an email it says that it is sent, but it never gets to the recipient. I am using multiple email addresses to check this and have looked in spam and all folders and the message is just not actually going through. I can log in to web-mail and the message appears in the sent folder and I can resend from web-mail and instantly the mail is received. I also installed another email client program and it is able to send mails and they go through instantly. Only Thunderbird is having issues with this. I have tried uninstalling and rebooting and then re-installing and after setup I still can not get emails to go through. If this is something simple with a setting for Thunderbird I would love a fix as we have been using Thunderbird for 6+ years. Otherwise I will just have to use the other program as it works with no mess

  • Cyrillic viewing problem in iLife and Leopard environment

    Hello,
I'm new to mac, but otherwise a savvy pc user.
What I am trying to find in my mac is the equivalent of Windows' Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings -> Advanced -> Language for non-Unicode programs -> (choose) Russian.
Basically, I've got a couple of russian songs and I sometimes type things in Cyrillic. The problem right now is that while I can type Cyrillic characters in a text body, it doesn't quite work out if I type something in the "address bar" of Safari or Firefox - all I get is "???????????" instead of characters. To add to the injury - when I import a song into iTunes library that has Cyrillic in the ID3 tags, iTunes shows the song name and artist in a gibberish form of accented latin characters. If iTunes was a mail client, the problem it's experiencing would have been easily solved by changing the character encoding -> from Unicode UTF-8 to Windows-1251 or KOIR-8R. Actually, the OS X should be aware of that, not just iTunes.
So how would I go about solving this issue?
I already have Russian input option in the input menu and in the
System Preferences ->International-> Languages the order is
    English
    Russian
    (whatever latin-character language is next)
Mind you that I do NOT want Russian in my application menus or otherwise have a russian version of OS X. What I simply need is to have Leopard properly display the Cyrillic characters.
I would be grateful to hear any suggestions.
    Cyrillic-wondering-ly,

This is a known bug in Firefox, which they have to fix. Safari should have no problem. Could you send me a screenshot of what is happening (tom at bluesky dot org).

Sorry, Mac iTunes ID3 tags have to be in Unicode. There is no way to change the encoding to accept something else, you have to change the tags. Some more info is here:

  • Report 6i -bad Cyrilic in PDF

    I have Oracle instance 8.1.7,character set UTF8.
My clients are Windows NT, with installed proper fonts and NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.CL8MSWIN1251(Cyrilic).
When I run reports(6i),output is OK(displays Cyrilic),but when I try to generate output to .PDF file, fonts are not OK.
    What should I do?

Well, actually, it's a mixed bag.
    -- 6i doesn't use the latest PDF standard and can't handle multi-bytes.
The workaround is horrendous. (I did it, once and only once.)
-- RTF output just dumps out the UTF8 values as if they were text,
which again does not meet the RTF standard for multibytes. Here
a workaround is much simpler. (Basically, post-process the file to
convert raw UTF-8 to the proper RTF syntax for Unicode. We've
been doing that in production for two years.)
-- HTML is easy. Tell Oracle to generate the charset command in the
    header, and there you are.
For PDF, though, I'd wait for 9i (or someone who's smarter about
    it than I am).

  • Russian (cyrillic) text visualization in datagrid through flex-amfphp-mysq

    Hi to all!!!
    Here's the scenario.
I've got a mysql db with several products stored in several languages (english, french, deutsch, italian and russian). The table is stored in utf8 and through phpMyAdmin or mysql GUI client I'm able to see correctly all the products in all the language (russian included).
I've also setted up remoting through amfphp. I've got a remote php object which queries the MySQL extracting all the products related to a language. On the flex side a read the remote result and I put it in a data grid  through databinding.
Everything works fine with english, french, deutsch and italian but the troubles come with russian.
In DataGrid cell, instead of the cyrillic chars, are displayed many "??????".
I've tried to elaborate the result of the query changing the string data with this php function mb_convert_encoding($row->describtion,'UTF-8','Windows-1251') but the text displayed remains the same.
    I've also tried with utf8_encode / utf8_decode.
Is there anyone who already faced this issue?
Am i doing something wrong on php side? Am I missing something on flex side?
    Any help would be appreciated!!!!
    Thanks in advance!
    Luke

If you make a call to drupal, through the Actionscript Remote
Object - you have to assign it a "return" function. If you put a
breakpoint in that return function and run it you can see what the
data looks like coming out of drupal. It's usually in an Object
variable with all the properties setup to your return types.
We've had great success parsing these objects directly from
    Drupal in our actionscript code.

  • Keyboard w/cyrillic characters

    Hi,
Currently I have a virtual keyboard I create for a touchscreen application. For one of our clients I need to be able to display Cyrillic.
But when I use Cyrillic characters in String[] that populates the array of buttons I get different characters.
I use font Ariel, which I know supports Cyrillic.
And I use "String s = e.getActionCommand()" to read the key selected.
Now as I write this I'm thinking maybe I should be using chars.
    Any thoughts on this.
    Thanks
    Jim

It's not clear how exactly you are 'use Cyrillic characters in String[]'. Can you show some source?

    source SAP International Address Versions:
    Searching for Address Versions
No search help is delivered for address versions in the SAP standard. You therefore have to create your own search help for this and add it to the relevant SAP standard search help.
To do this, proceed as follows:
    Creating a Search Help
    1. Go to transaction SE11. The ABAP Dictionary: Initial Screen is displayed.
    2. Select the Database Table checkbox, enter ADRC in the adjacent field and choose Display.
    3. Find the names of the fields you require in the Short Text column and make a note of their actual field names. The fields normally required are the client, address number, customer/vendor/bank number, and nation.
    4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the specific application table to be used, such as KNA1.
    5. Go back to the ABAP Dictionary: Initial Screen and select the View checkbox. Enter a name for your search help in the adjacent field and choose Create.
    6. In the subsequent dialog box, select the Database View checkbox and choose Copy. The Dictionary: Maintain View screen is displayed.
    7. Under Tables on the Tables/Join Conditions tab page, enter the names of the tables used above.
    8. In the Join Conditions frame, enter a field name from the first table and its corresponding name from the second table used, for each field required.
    9. Enter a short text for your search help and choose Save.
    10. In the subsequent dialog box, enter the required development class and choose Save.
Adding a Search Help to an SAP Standard Search Help
    11. Go back to the ABAP Dictionary: Initial Screen and select the Search Help checkbox. In the adjacent field, enter the name of the relevant collective search help delivered by SAP in which your search help to be included, for example DEBI2. The Dictionary: Display Search Help screen is displayed.
    12. Choose the Included Search Helps tab page and enter the name of the search help you created above in the Search Help column and the corresponding short text. Choose Save.
    Result
Your own defined search help is included in the list of standard SAP search helps and you can now use it to search for an address version.
