D-Bracket Processor Initialization on K8N Neo4 Platinum

Folks,
I just read through previous posts and want to list what I plan to try first.  See setup in my profile below.  I built the new systems in Aug-Sept, 2005.
Situation:
This morning after last night's normal shutdown I get blank screen, no disk drive sounds, but I hear fans and see temperature sensors with abnormally cool readings.  The DVD light flashed.  I checked D-Bracket and have 1&4 red and 2&3 green for processor initialization.  I found no loose cables.  I have not yet opened the case.
What to try first:
I gather the D-Bracket is only advisory, not gospel.  So the standard things are
clear CMOS - I plan to use the button on the 7125 MB
remove CMOS battery for an hour
remove and reconnect the power cables from the PSU to the MB
I welcome any comments.  I still am a hardware novice.

Thanks to HenryW for his comments and suggestions on Christmas day.
Simply disconnecting and reconnecting the main cable from the PSU to the MB got my box back in business.  I always welcome easy victories.
I assume it was some kind of power anomaly that caused a circuit breaker like action in the MB so disconnecting the fully seated and secure cable, waiting a minute, then reconnecting was sufficient.
I have another issue, though, a NB fan that is not functioning.  I will make a second post about that after getting breakfast.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum as HTPC mobo questions

I've been looking at building a Home Theater PC (HTPC) for a little while now and have been investigating various parts, including possible motherboards. The MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum is a key canidate and I was wondering if I could get some advice from people who actually use the board as to whether it would be suitable. Here is the basic run down of what I need:
    1) I have read that there are potential issues with the AMD 90nm cores. It seems a lot of people in the forum are running them though. Has the problem been cleared up with the latest BIOS? (I am looking at using at least a 3500+ Venice core, but might try to go a little higher).
    2) The board has a cooling fan on it, How loud is it? (The goal is to try and make the system as silent as possible without going over budget)
    3) Front side Firewire connector - it seems like its located between two PCI slots. Has this posed a problem?
    4) The PCI slot "reserved" as a comm slot - is it usable for other PCI devices? (One reason this board is on the short list is that it has 4 PCI slots. I plan on putting in at least 3 tuner cards, possibly 4 or using the 4th for a sound card or some other device. Thus, having this slot available as a general purpose PCI is important. Some retailers claim it is 'reserved' others don't.)
Any other recommendations would also be appreciated. Especially as concerns silencing and processor choice.

There were, make sure u get a E4 revision or higher. 99,9% of CPU's shipped today will have that.

Very, I have the same fan. I run it at 5v, than it's OK, u can get an adapter in most PC shops. Getting a passive haetsink is also a possibility, but that will void your warrenty.

Dunno, Don't see why, make sure u get a HTPC with a front bracket with a FW port.

See if this will fit in ur HTPC (the 80mil one)

Underclocking and undervolting will also help keeping the CPU cool = less need for noisy fans.
Be weary of components causing heat. Samsung HDD's are the coolest, use as many as the onboard stuff as possible, etc..
Stick to 1 casefan and put it on the NB-FAN, so Corecenter or Speedfan can manage the fan speed. Recomended brands are Papst, Panaflo and Vantec Stealth.
4GB limit is due to having a 32bit OS. With 32bits u can only adress a max of 3GB. It might work using XP 64-bit, but I don't see why a anyone would need it.

  • PSU Dead and MOBO K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI Too, what can i do???

Yerterday i was sleeping and suddenly the PSU (Rosewill RP550) Blow away, I Inmediatly check the PSU and guess what? Fried!!! Then i went to sleep again to check the other components in the mourning. The next Mourning i took my old PSU and put an 20 to 24 pin adapter, placed it in the mobo and doesn´t work, next i put a friend PSU with 24 pin connector and nothing, next i test 2 or 3 PSUs more and nothing. After all this tests i started thinking that the mobo was having electrical issues. I went to a friend house and tested the processor ( AMD 3000+ CBBID 0505) and the Memory (OCZ Rev2 1GB), they worked. I couldn´t test the Video Card (MSI 6600GT 128MB) because i dont have any other mobo to check it.
Its Important to tell you guys that when i try to plug the PSU power conector to the MOBO the Fans and network led start for 1 second, then turn off, i try to start the computer and nothing happend. All this with the four PSUs.
A friend of mine which is a computers Technician told me that took off the MOBO batery, CPU and Memory and put Aluminiun foil all over and around the mobo to eliminate any static on it. What do yo think about this??
Please if you have any suggestion, i´ll be happy.
BTW: Which are the procedures to RMA both componnets ? I bough the mobo and PSU and the others components  on www.newegg.com on May 09 2005.
    Thanks for all.

Got my Newegg RMA board back (K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI) today!  I mailed it to them Friday, they got it Monday and a replacement back to me today.  Excellent turnaround
The board looks like it was refurbished because the anti-static bag was a bit wrinkled and had pinholes all over one section where the board couldn't have caused it.  Also, it had bios 3.0 on it!  The rest of the stuff in the board looks new but it didn't come with the USB 2.0 bracket which the first board I got did.  Live and learn.
I flashed it to 3.2 and all appears to be working.  Not gonna try 3.3.  I read somewhere that there may be a beta 3.5 bios out somewhere.  Maybe I'll wait till that one goes final.
Haven't had any experience with MSI support as far as RMA's but if this replacement board craps out I'll try them next.

  • Constant HDD access (K8N Neo4 Platinum)

Hello all, this is my first time posting on these forums.
A couple of days ago I put together a new system for myself, with the following components:
    * Athlon64 3200+ processor
    * MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard
    * 1Gb RAM
    * Gigabyte 128Mb GeForce 6600GT graphics card
    * 2x Seagate 250Gb 7200rpm SATA drives
    * LG IDE dual-layer DVD-RW drive
    * Apacer 7-in-1 internal USB 2.0 card reader
    * Thermaltake "soprano" ATX midi-tower w/ 400W PSU
The two hard drives I have connected to ports SATA5 and SATA6 on the motherboard and set up in a RAID1 configuration (using the on-board Silicon Image SiI 3114 RAID controller). I then installed Windows XP Professional, which went on fine. The only problem I have now is that the hard drives are being constantly accessed by the system, even when I'm doing nothing on the system. This isn't just an occasional access once every second or so, the little HDD LED just flickers away merrily the whole time. I have run both filemon and diskmon on the system, and found that while no particular files appear to be being accessed, there is almost constant write activity being performed to the hard drives.
I have narrowed it down to somehow involving the Windows XP RAID drivers. If I boot from the Windows XP install disk and load the third party drivers for the SiI 3114, I get the constant disk access when sitting at the first screen of the install process ("Welcome to Windows XP" text-only screen). If I do the same without loading the drivers (thus Windows does not recognise the RAID drive), no disk access. I have tried updating the RAID controller drivers under the Device Manager (now up to version 1.2.0.0), but it does not fix the problem. I have done a full virus and spyware scan (bearing in mind that this is a clean install), with no results. I have checked all running processes and services (including making sure Indexing Service is not running), but have been unable to find anything that could be causing this constant activity. I have yet to try actually breaking the mirror and running the drives off the normal SATA controller. I will be trying that tonight when I get home if no other solution presents itself, but obviously I would rather get it behaving properly in RAID1 if at all possible.
It's driving me crazy. There doesn't appear to be any actual issues with the performance of the machine, but the constant hard disk activity can't be good for the drives long-term. I have searched these forums for a possible solution, and while some people have had similar problems, none of the suggested solutions have worked for me so far. If anyone can help me with my dilemma, I would be Eternally Grateful(tm).

Yes! At least I'm not alone... constant disk ticking is driving me nuts too.
I have same issue with a newly built system - different board but Sil3114.
My C: is on the NF4 SATA interface, but I have 4 250GB Seagaets on the Sil3114, intended for a RAID5 array. Having installed XP, I've become distracted by the constant disk access and have been trying everything to eliminate it before proceeding with the rest of the build - nogo. Your post gave me the clue - boot with Sil3114 disabled = no disk activity; boot with enabled = constant disk flogging.
I've got the Sil driver up to 1.2.3.1 but no better. Suspect it may be the Sil3114 BIOS that needs upgrading but seems no way to flash it - have you got anywhere with your debugging?
Appreciate a solution before I go crazy with the tick, tick tick....

  • Problem replacing K8n Neo4 Platinum

Hello everybody, this is my first post here, I am a new member from Italy.
    I have this problem:
I own a K8n Neo4 Platinum and when I changed the VGA from Nvidia 6600 GT to 8600 GTS the Mobo doesn't post anymore.. The usb diagnostig bracket says it's a memory problem but when I've put my memory banks on a different PC, they work just fine.
I think the problem was caused by the little space that I had between the VGA and the chipset cooler (Zalman passive);when I installed the VGA I damaged the chipset. Taking a closer look at it I noticed that 1 edge is damaged. I also substituted the Power suplly but the result is always the same.
So I decided to replace the mobo but I don't want to reinstall windows. Finding my same mobo is impossible here in Europe. I only found the K8n Neo4-F.
My question is the following :
-Does this Mobo use the same drivers that were installed on my HD? (latest driver downloaded  from Nvidia version 6.86)
-Will I have problems with Windows ?

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum

I purchased this board in May of 2005 and I am looking to upgrade the processor.
The MSI web site specs say that the board is X2 ready but doesn't state what processors it supports.  What X2 processors does it support?
The web specs also state that the board supports up to a 4000+ processor.  Has this changed and does it now support faster processors that are not shown on the web specs?

  • Please Help K8N Neo4 Platinum won't boot?

    Hello,
I could use your expertise in this matter. I have built several systems and never seen this before. My system will not boot with the hard drive
and/or DVD drive attached. It will boot with just the 1.44 floppy attached. My system is as follows:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum ATX AMD Motherboard
    connect3D 3038 Radeon X800GTO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card
    Rosewill RV500S-2 500W Power Supply 500W ATX 2.01
                +3.3v- 30A
                +5V  - 45a
               +12V1 - 18a
               +12V2 - 16a
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory
            Cas Latency 2.5
            Voltage 2.5V
            Unbuffered
Windows XP professtional Service Pack 2
I tried resetting CMOS, changing the cmos battery, re-setting the video card, moving memory modules (from positions 1&2 to 3&4). The power supply is working. When I put my hard drive into another system it boots perfectly. Please help!
    Thanks
    Tony

All that info and I still don't know where you are plugging them in.     SATA or IDE(PATA)? Both?
Can you describe the not booting a little more?  i.e.  No video at all, you see POST but it doesn't complete, POST completes but you can't boot an OS.

  • HELP ! CPU question on MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI Motherboard

    Hello i've a simple Question : Does A64 3400+ S939 works on this board ?

    Hi douglasp,
    Things haven't changed since K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI + athlon 64 3400+ ????
There is no AMD64 3400 939 CPU - see AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Model Numbers and Feature Comparison
754 CPu are single channel compatable withK8N Neo Platinum
939 CPu are Dual channel. compatable with K8N Neo4 Platinum
as someone said in previous thread it's probably a misprint.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI

I am confused with regard to what is actually included with the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI board in the US. Unfortunately, MSI isn't very clear with their information.
Does this board include the following, or are they optional, & if optional how can I get them:
IEEE 1394 (Firewire) ports (1 external, 2 internal)
    SPDIF Out
    D-Bracket 2
    SATA 5-6 ports
Anybody actually have this board installed & running yet, & would you buy this board if you were starting all over again? Were your experiences with this board good or bad? Any gotchas?
    Thanks

    Quote
Unfortunatly, the MSI-websites (american, european, taiwanese) all have slightly different specs listed, but none exactly covered what my package included.
I've read numerous posts about MSI motherboards & video cards not meeting the manufacturer's claimed specifications.   This deeply troubles me, & makes me wonder if I should buy MSI products at all.
    Quote
f you buy 2 6600GT's now, you're stuck on the performance of about a single 6800GT, less in some cases.
If you buy a 6800GT now, you get the same bang, but have the option to add anotherone later to up your rig!
Exactly my point! I just can't see paying extra money on a high-end, bleeding-edge SLI motherboard, then populating it with 2 mid-level graphics cards. I suppose that seems logical to some people, but not me. I've also read in the reviews that the attachment of the heatsink/fan on the 6600GT is not physically secure, & many of the heatsinks aren't properly attached to, or making full contact with, the GPU on retail versions of the cards!
Of course, SLI is still very much a technology that has yet to prove its promise. Very few games support it, & teething pains abound. We're still in the verion 1.0 of SLI motherboards, which is kind of scary, & all of the current crop of SLI motherboards seem to have their "issues." nVIDIA is lagging behind in releasing updated video card drivers. Maybe SLI isn't quite "ready for primetime" yet.
    Quote
An Ultra would be a waste of money. The difference is not worth the extra dough for it, and a brand GT can
be clocked to Ultra-levels as well.
Some people would not want to spend the extra $ on an Ultra, but others might feel that it is well worth the cost. Sure, you can overclock a GT to gain a bit of extra performance, but what levels of performance can you gain by overclocking the Ultra? I don't know the answer to this. I still have a lot of research to conduct concerning the nVIDIA 6800GT & Ultras, & the "real world" viability of SLI.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum problems

I have one questions and one problem for you all:
Why do i have to disable CPU-spread spectrum to get the right PCI-clock ( if you believe ntune ) ?
    Strange things happen??:
I have Seti@Home ( a very CPU-intensive application ) as my screen saver. I was supprised to see that my new computer ( Athlon 3800+, 1GB ram ) seems to be slower than my old AtlonXP 1700+! What was happening here? My investigations result was: Whenever the screensaver is active the cpu is clocked down. I come to this conclusion because first the computer is really slow and second the cpu-temperature was almost on idle levels ( measured with ntune ). When i disable the screensaver at all and let seti run as normal application everything is as expected. Well either this is WindowsXp SP2 or the bios i would say - before anyone has to ask: Cool'n Quite is disabled in bios. Anyone else has the same effekt?
    Thanks for any reply.
    My System in detail:
    WindowsXP SP2 with uptodate drivers

Spread spectrum means the frequency is modulated (not constant) - so it will be measured differantly.
I don't see this as an issue, but why do you need it enabled anyway ?
The frequency thing is strange since Cool'n Quiet is disabled, maybe you have Core Center running and doing something to the frequency ?
    Thanks for the reply.
Naturally i don't need the spread spectrum, but it was enabled by default and i was curious.
No, core center ( or something similar ) isn't running. Atm i don't want to change any frequencies, i just want to build it as stable as possible ( and fast, naturally ).   And one other thing: seti is running quite well - it needs 2 to 2.5 hours to process a seti-work-unit - when the computer is running normal, but it slows down to about 1/3 of its speed when seti is running as screensaver, it needs 6 hours and more to complete one seti-work-unit. Isn't that exactly what Cool'nQuiet is doing ( among other things ) : reducing the clock speed to one third? :-(
Btw. in bios the ACPI Standby State is set to S1 ( i think that may be of interest ). I am running bios version 1.2
Well, atm i have disabled ( in windows )  any power management ( and screensavers ) and the computer doesn't throttle down the processor any more.
Well, someone has any idea how i can find out what is the problem with my computer?
Thanks in advance for any reply.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum with 90nm San Diego 4000+

    Hello everyone,
My first post here. Tomorrow I'm purchasing a K8N Neo4 Platinum MB (non SLI) and have requested the retail seller to get me a 90nm San Diego 4000+ instead of the older 130nm Clawhammer 4000+. Now, after reading through this forum it appears there may be a compatibility issue with the San Diego chip. Should I change to the Clawhammer or go ahead with the San Diego. I don't plan on OCing for a couple of months. What should I do?
    Thanks!

I just fired up my K8n Neo4/sli with a 4000 rev.e chip last night, Bios is showing 3.0 and working like it should. Have it hooked to a Enermax 535 watt and One Evga 6800gt pci-e with the second card still in the box, I want to give it a good update and test before I bring the second card online, Cpu running at 35c with the side of under a Thermalright xp 90C Heatsink fan blowing down, want to test it fan blowing up next. Good luck it's a nice chip.
JJWOLD, thanks for the update, good news for me. I picked up the board last night, the rest of the stuff should be here next week. I'm going to load it with WinXP 64, which I know has limited driver support but I have three other computers so I'll just take it very slow on additional hardware and software installations. I may even use the integrated sound for now. By the way, did your board come with the 1394 cable and bracket?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
I recently built a system for my friend and he wanted the following setup. Everything works good, but when he selects Windows to shutdown, the OS goes through regular procedures, then the screen fades to black. However, the fans keep running and the PSU is still live..... so it seems the system isnt shutting down 100%. I have seen this issue before, but dont remember how to fix it. Something to do with the registry or within the system, alas, i cannot remember. please assist.
