D-link 524 HEEEELP!

Hello,
I have absolutely no idea how to set this thing up...can someone help?
I have a G4 as my main computer hooked into the D-link wireless router via ethernet, a PC hooked in the same way, and a Graphite iBook with an older (I assume, the iBook was a gift) Airport Card.
The PC person next door (who is hooked into my router, sharing my Road Runner) started experiencing typical PC weirdness whenever they get hooked up to any kind of internet connection (so glad I have Macs!), because I couldn't figure out the router's firewall or WEP settings. Tell you the truth, I haven't any idea what WEP IS! LOL!
I had it set without encryption because that was the only way I could get a connection with the iBook via wireless. I really wanted to set it up a little more securely, but didn't have the time and I figured (for now) that I could deal with it later because my Macs won't be effected. Well they weren't, but the PC was (didn't even think of it).
Before I had a Belkin wired router with the typical firewall and the PC has been fine.
The firewall for the D-link is so complicated (the online setup for the router) that I don't even know if it's on!
Can someone help?
Just when you think you're savvy as **** about your Mac(s), something humbles you! LOL!
Thanks

Thank you for your answer.
First: Without security the connection works fine. Here is what I do:
On the D-Link, I use WEP, 128 bit, ASCII and choose my WEP key to be fx. "stigxleerbeck" without the quotation marks. I am not allowed to use quotation marks in this kind of key.
In 10.4.3 on my iBook I choose WEP 40/128 bit ASCII and enter the password.
It will not allow me to write "stigxleerbeck" with the quotation marks and without it doesn't work. After a while I get an "failure" window just telling m e that there was a failure during attempt to connect to the Airport network.

  • WRE54G Rev 1 -- D-Link 524 Router

    Hi,
I have a Wireless D-Link 524 Router (newest firmware) and I am trying to expand the range of my network using a LinkSys WRE54G Rev. 1 expander.
First off will the WRE54G work with a D-Link router?  On the box it says will work with "most" wireless routers.  But then on a page in the documentation it lists only 3 Linksys routers.
When setting up the D-Link router with DHCP.  It allows you only to use the IP Range of 192.168.0.xxx the default setting for the WRE54G is 192.168.1.240.  I changed it to 192.168.0.240.  Same channel.  There is also no security setup on either devices.  But still no luck.
Has anyone else had any luck using the WRE54G with a non Linksys product?
If you need anymore info let me know.
    Thanks

As you mentioned ..... you changed the Ip settings on Range Extender from 192.168.1.240 to 192.168.0.240 ... subnet - 255.255.255.0 ...& gateway address 192.168.0.1....
    Check the light status ...
Also check the wireless settings are same as in the router .....
Try to ping the address of the Range extender .... see if it works ....

  • Powerbook G4 can't see D-Link 524

Hi. I have been trying to get my daughter's powerbook connected to my D-Link 524 wireless network for several weeks now and can't find how to make it work. I have posted here asking for help and received some valuable information that has helped me understand networks and settings better but I still haven't been able to connect to my network with this computer.
Can anyone help me with what type of security settings should work for this connection and still keep my network available to my MacBook pro and my partner's Intel iMac?
I've been searching archives and trying things and I have tried several alternatives but can't seem to get it. the dlink is set to mix mode (g/b) and I've tried setting it from 54 to 11.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I guess the thread you are referencing is "Powerbook G4 Airport Firmware 9.52 - can I join 802.11g wireless network?"
You should be aware that starting a new thread is going to yield you all the same suggestions you already received. This may cause you frustration but that is what is going to happen when people don't immediately see what has already been suggested and tried.
You don't provide enough information to know if your daughter's PowerBook has a 802.11b AirPort card or an 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme card. I assume the PowerBook is running OS 10.4.8 but you don't mention the exact version of the OS.
Was your daughter's PowerBook (or AirPort card) bought in the Americas or Taiwan? If so, it will only work on channels 1-11. If you base station is using channels 12-14 the PowerBook won't be able to connect.
If your base station has MAC address filtering (access control) enabled, disable it. It is no real security.
If your base station is not broadcasting the SSID (network name), change the setting so that the SSID is broadcast. This is a useless feature and shouldn't be used.
Other than that... If the router is operating in a compatible mode (b or g whatever the PowerBook is capable of) and encryption is off, there is absolutely no reason why the PowerBook shouldn't be able to join the wireless network.

  • D-link 524, appletalk and printing

    hi!
i am trying unsuccessfully to print via wireless d-link router to my old laserjet...
    my setup:
    powerbook g4 12"
    [linking via airport to:]
    d-link524 wireless router
[ethernet connection from back of above router to:]
    hp laser jet 2100tn
    [which works fine via ethernet+appletalk]
when on wireless, i cannot see the printer in the printer setup utility, and i suspect, after doing some research here and reading other posts, that there may be an issue with appletalk not beng supported by a non-apple wireless unit? is that why i can't see the printer?
if so, is there a work around? i have been thinking of experimenting with going back to my old non-wireless router, to which the printer would be connected, and then adding the wireless router simply as another ethernet device? not sure if this would work....
any thoughts or advice much appreciated

    OK Folks!
I've worked it out, after reading the following forum post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=729511&#729511
I first reassigned the IP address of the printer, using the d-link DI 524 static IP address configuration window in DHCP.
I then went to Printer Setup Utility and activated the new IP address of the printer under 'HP Jet Direct Socket'.
Bingo! The whole network, including my wireless connection can now see the printer in this mode with this new IP address.

  • Anyone using a D-link 524 wireless router??

anyone using a dlink 524 ? i can't get this thing to work .. any dlink users out there?

    I've got a 524.
With my original MBP Core Duo machine, the 10.4.9 update totally put me out of commission. I had to reinstall OSX to get back online. Patching up to 10.4.8 was fine, but wireless update 2007-002 is the one that breaks things.
But then the machine died... Which allowed me to discover that:
MBP Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz works flawlessly with the DI-524. No problems at all. The original MBP has a crappy wireless card.

  • D-Link wireless router kicks our roomate offline but not us

Hi all, we use a D-Link DI-524 to share our wireless signal with our roomate. Sometimes she will stay connected for days and sometimes it only stays online for about half an hour, but eventually the router cuts her off and she can't reconnect until I reset the router. The router is currrently in its default settings. She is on an iBook running Tiger. Our Powerbook never has this problem. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  • Network devices not showing up under "shared" in finder bar

Ok so i have a network that consists of a maxtor nas device, 2 win xp pc's, 1 win7 pc, d-link 524 router, and my macbook pro. I would like to be able to transfer files between my mac and the devices and use the printer attached to my maxtor. My issue is that none of the computers show up under the "shared" section of finder or under network. I use to have this issue with leopard but it resolved itself. Now under snow leopard for a couple months and i have yet to get it work. I can access my mac and other pcs from a pc. Anyone know how to get my network to show up on my mac?

Your problem is very common under Snow. At first my shares did not show up under shared in finder windows. I, then, of course, used "Connect to Server" to connect to the shares--both Mac and PC. I found that the more I kept the shares active the more likely they were show up under shared. Then, I discovered that if I kept the computers from sleeping during the period of needed access they would tend to stay in shared without nearly so much keeping the connections active.
If you do not like the above work around, then there are two other possibilities. You can elect to show mounted items on your desktop. Do that and connect to each share. Then, go > users > unlock > + login options > try dragging the mounted shares to the login item window. If successful, then the shares should be available at login.
Another approach is to mount and connect as indicated above. Then, making an alias to the share should at least make things faster.

  • WRT54G - IP and Port mapping problems

I'll set the scenario first so you can understand what i'm trying to do. I have a D-Link 524 configured trough PPoE to get access to internet. It has DHCP enabled (from 192.168.0.100 to .199). I had static ip configured in the D-Link router as 192.168.0.90 and some ports forwarded to my pc that's like 50 meters away from the router, in other office. The thing is, I added a WRT54G v6 router cause the wireless signal from the d-link didn't reach where I am, and some people needed to use it. So, I plugged my pc to the WRT54G, and the linksys to the D-Link. No, my problem is, I no longer have the static ip that the d-link assigned me (the linksys uses the 192.168.1.X range, and the d-link the 192.168.0.X range). Now, if I release my MAC address from the D-link and assing a static ip in the WRT54G, I could fordward the ports I had before in the d-link but in the linksys. The thing is, I can't find a way to assing a static ip in the linksys. And I tried to change the range of ip from the linksys to 192.168.0.X so I can still use the assigned address from the d-link but it didn't work, I couldn't access the linksys neither the d-link after changing the address, didn't get internet either, so i had to reset the linksys. After all of this... what the hell do I do Azureus can't connect, or any other P2P app for that matter (cause I had the ports forwarded in the other router, and I can't forward them in the linksys cause I get a dynamic local ip, if I forward them to, say 192.168.1.100 and some day I get assigned 192.168.1.101... well, I assume it won't work as expected)

The WRT54G does not assign fixed IP addresses through DHCP. You have to set a static IP address on the computer itself instead of using DHCP.
I would, however, recommend not to use the WRT as router but only as simple access point. Instructions are here. Set a LAN IP address like 192.168.0.2 on the WRT to keep it accessible inside your normal LAN. I think this setup will solve all your problems. You can still use the fixed IP address assignment from the DHCP server on the D-Link and you only have to configure a single port forwarding on the D-Link (instead of two which would be necessary if you connect the Linksys router through its internet port to the D-Link).
With two access points you can create a roaming network by using the identical wireless settings on both routers (SSID, wireless security, wireless mode). Channels should be different and at least 5 apart. SSID broadcast should be enabled on both. Now most wireless clients are able to move between both access points without loosing the connection.

  • Sharing internet with two apple laptop.

    Hi,
Im trying to share my internet connection of my macbook pro to macbook.
My Macbook pro is connected thru ethernet cable.
So, I was wondering if its possible to share internet connection of both laptop, thru airport to airport, or bluetooth to bluetooth.
I can't connect ethernet to ethernet because one of them is in use for internet.

You can share the connection. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu. Enter 'share internet' in the search field without quotes. The second article will provide the help you need.
I would recommend you buy an inexpensive wireless router which is a better alternative. The D-Link 524, for example, is under $60 and provides four LAN ports as well as standard wireless.

  • "Airport is connected to the network... AirPort has a self-assigned IP addr

    Hi,
The subject of this posting is part of the message I am getting:
"AirPort is connected to the network... AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet."
And with the message I get a yellow dot.
Now, I've tried using "Assist me" several times, tried TCP/IP manual configuration, Using DHCP with manual address, just DHCP, and BootP (this one oddly enough worked for the first time, but now it is no longer working). I also tried to connect using the DNS server as the 192.168.0.1 (the one for the D-Link), but no dice.
I have a D-Link DI-624 router connected to my Power PC G4; the internet works fine in the G4 and (gasp) in my kids (2) PCs!!! So, it is not the router, nor the connection with the internet.
Here is the odd thing: before I upgraded to Tiger the internet connection in my PBG4 via AirPort (same everything, except for the growling Tiger), was GREAT, no problems, no interference, no dropping connections.
So, I thought it was the PBG4 personality getting too picky. I reboot the thing, erase all the memory and started fresh (that is when the BootP worked). Turned off and went to sleep; the next day the problem has returned like a ghost from the horrifying past....
And by the way, the AirPort works beautifully at my university wireless network.
Please, any good soul out there, help me out on this puzzle.
    Thanks.
    Ariane.
    class=otherinfo>Power Mac G4, PowerBook G4, D-Link DI-624 AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless Router   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

These might work. I have a D-Link 524 router which I got from a client as payment for work on his computers. The thing is abysmal. I spent two days tinkering with it. I found the issues many have here with the D-Link routers and a Mac. Specifically a PowerBook G4 that I have connected through Airport to the D-Link. At first when I connected my DSL to the router, it gave me a good, fast signal to my wired PCs. Then It started giving me problems with dropping the signal on the wired PCs and the router started to reboot every few minutes when I connected my PowerBook. To make a long story short, I tried a lot of settings, but I found that if I changed the setting in the TX speed of the performance menu under the Advanced tab to 11(Mbps), my PowerBook works fine and there are no conflicts. This took me two days, people, and I know a thing or two about these metal, wire and plastic thingies. I hope this helps someone... I guess you can also set the speed to 54g or just opt to keep it in G if that's what you have. It seems to me that the D-Link routers have some faulty or "screwed up" chip technology that doesn't play well with others in mixed mode.

  • Slow initial association with WRT54GS w/WRE54G

I have 2 laptops and both are having problems with initial association with the WRT54GS and WRE54G.
I had some initial problems with the WRE54G but have fallen back to a default install with no security for troubleshooting.
However even with this default install, both laptops will do the initial attempt to associate with my SID, fail to acquire IP, and then grab an IP about 2 minutes or so after failure.
Does anyone have an idea as to what would cause this and how do I speed up the acquisition of a valid IP?
    Thanks,
    GimmeFive

I'm new here, too, and looking for solution to exact same problem. Starts at 54 mbps and then very quickly drops down to 11 then 2 then 1!  I've done no updates or changes since buying it.  I have V7.2.  My very old D-Link 524 worked better than this!  Sure hope someone has a solution. Keep in mind that I don't know what all the special language is, and since I work 60 hrs per week at 3 businesses, don't have time for much more than I'm doing.  So hope you explain VERY clearly what needs to be done if you have a solution.  Thanks so much for any help to any of us... : )

  • Can't get to one site...

I posted this in the Safari forum but have always had better results when posting here and since this also includes my G3 laptop, I hope it's okay to overlap.
I tried searching last night but came up empty relative to what's going on with Safari, Firefox and accessing a certain website.
In both browsers, I get the can't connect error window when I try to access my church's home site. I have tried to access this site with both my iMac and a laptop, same D-Link 524 router. Same results. Now, my gf who has a PC, on the same router, IS able to get to the site. I tried to access this site at the Library on their Mac and had no problems. Up until the past week, I could always access this site, no problem. I've done nothing to change the settings/OS until after repeated attempts last night failed. I am now upgraded to Firefox 2.0.0.7, Safari beta 3 (actually, I tried this and it seemed glitchy so went back to Safari 2.0.3) and am running 10.4.10 (I just upgraded from 10.4.5--I was having no issues until this week!) on the off chance THAT was the issue. I've reset Safari. I read a bit of advice to try a proxy and did so; doing this, I DID get to the site but had limited mobility, still, it did work. I thought it was that the site had changed something but since the Library is fine, I'm thinking it is now my 'system'. So, any advice?
    btw; the site is http://kensingtonchurch.org
I have (2) G3 iMacs, (1) G5 iMac, and one PC hooked up to a DI-524 D-Link router, all cabled with ethernet. The older G3's are running Panther, the newer is running Tiger. I called the internet server people and the D-Link people, and both say all is well with my hardware. I checked to see if the firewall was on and it is not.
Kinda strange that suddenly, the site is not accessible. I sent emails to my church and they say there is no problem (verified by my usage of a Mac at the library with no issues).
I hope someone can at least point me to a possible solution.
    Michael

    Thanks for all the help, William. Okay, update;
The firmware is indeed upgraded, showng v1.23 from v1.11
The router does reset/restart(?) during the process. I have to click on the apply and it does its thing.
The MTU WAS 1492 and I lowered it to 1454 as you suggested.
    I disabled game mode, also.
Nothing is better, but wait, I'll restart a couple of things...
So, having done all this, I naturally tried to connect, expecting the same result because that just seeemed to be my luck. Well, on first try, before restarting the browser and allowing a bit of time for the router to finish, I got nothing different. BUT, I just restarted Safari and guess what? IT WORKED!!!!
Geez, who'd have thought you could walk on water, William????
heh, can't believe it, really--I was so sure the router was just going to have to be replaced! Doing this last bit of changes, what do you think made the difference and could you tell me why? That is, why did the PC get through to the site but the Mac(s) was denied? And, I never touched the router previous to this latest; how could it have allowed access all this time (probably 2 years, at least) and then suddenly block access?
Don't get me wrong; I'll remain happy in my ignorance but it sure would be interesting to understand the hows and whys!
    Thanks again, William!

  • Advice about hooking up a MBA to my emac and it's firewire external devices

    Hi
A friend has offered to pass on a MBA - the only prob is that i'm Emac and firewire based with my hard ware. I don't even use any wireless.
    My First questions are:
    1. Would it be possible to get the emac communicating with the MBA wirelessly in theory - and if so whats the easiest way ?
    2. If i can do the above - will the MBA be able to access my external firewire HHDs and external dvd drive via them being hooked up to my emac - Whats the deal with the MBA accessing these external firewire devices ? Is it as simple as them being mounted on my emac desktop?
    3. I'm on Tiger on my emac - will the Leopard on MBA be able to interact with this OS ?
    4. My Emac is a PPC computor - will it still be able to interact with the MBA ?
    Thanks for helping out ...
    d

You certainly can use an AEBS if you want. It's more expensive but is very well-made, reliable, and you can be sure it's Apple compatible. Personally, I use an AEBS in my home network. However, I use a D-Link 524 for my Vancouver condo network because I rent the condo when I'm not there. My tenants usually have PCs, so the D-Link will be easier for them to work with and configure. It works perfectly well with my Macs, but configuration requires using a browser (the included software doesn't work on Macs) and D-Link doesn't provide much support for Mac users. If these are concerns for you, then by all means use the AEBS. You won't be disappointed.
The D-Link 524 only supports Ethernet 10/100BT speeds, but for you that's fine because your eMac's Ethernet port only supports Ethernet 10/100BT speeds, so you really can't take advantage of the higher speeds within your network. The D-Link does not support 802.11n which means you will be limited to 802.11b/g communication speed for your MBA. That would not be the case with the AEBS.
As for file sharing you can share files between computers without requiring the use of the Public folder. See the following:

  • Wifi Connection drops but still have all bars. Please Apple, respond us

I have a macbook pro 13''(purchased 1 month), a white macbook (bought in 2007) and a dell vostro 1310 (with windows 7) using the same router WRT54G2 Linksys or D-link 524
Only on my macbook pro 13''my connection drops without explanation and without a certain period (15 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours).
I'm with latest updates (both macbook as a router), already formatted and applied the 10.6.4 combo. I have already put ip manually turned off DHCP, DNS already placed manually, I swapped the channel router. Everything recommended in official forums, but nothing helped.
What makes me saddest is that Apple does not respond. Even with so many threads about this problem.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
