D-Link DSL-2740B W'less-N Modem Router: Underwhelming & BTMM not supported

I recently purchased the D-Link DSL-2740B Wireless-N Modem Router, hoping to be blown away by the new N-protocol for Wireless, carefully ensuring that UPnP was supported (on the box) before spending my money, (in order to use Back to my Mac). Sadly not only was I underwhelmed by the unnoticeable difference in wireless range and speed, but with UPnP dutifully enabled, Back to my Mac simply would not work. No amount of calling Tech support or fiddling with settings made any difference.
Also the setup CDROM was only PC-compatible, so you have to use a web browser interface to setup, but only after you've worked out what the setup screen's IP address is from the sketchy B&W install manual.
I would conclude that zero thought at D-Link has gone into making this hardware a tool for the 12% and rapidly growing pool of Mac users. If you have a Mac, do not buy. Any differing experiences with this hardware?

I just had the wonderful experience of buying a new D-link modem router with the intention of being able to use Back to My Mac. No such luck. I enabled UpNP and NAT, but the machine always came up with a fault regarding the NAT or UpNP with the router. Finally, I emailed D-link (I bought the new device on Friday, and D-link won't be at work over the weekend) after tearing my hair out for two days. Their response? The BRAND NEW modem router doesn't work with Back to My Mac. See the actual response below.
"The service “Back To My Mac” will not currently work with the DSL-G604T. It is being looked into, though is not a high priority.
There are other alternatives which can be used for remote viewing of Apple Mac machines over the Interent, from Remote locations."
Well, how's that for support? No mention of an alternative product in their range. Maybe they don't want to sell equipment to Mac users?

  • FF 6.0 doesn't open pdf-links, after clicking on "open pdf" error message says file not supported or damaged. IE opens file all right. Please advice.

Firefox 6.0 doesn't open pdf-links after clicking on "open pdf". I frequently need to do literature searches and I need to view pdf files in the browser. After clicking on the pdf - link of a file the main options are to open or download the pdf. Every time I try to open a pdf-file a blank page and an error message appears saying the file would not be supported or is damaged. IE, however, opens the file all right. I tried various changes in the security and cookie settings without success. Please advice.

    Hi SGckc,
This document is almost certainly a dynamic XFA form. Unfortunately, our mobile Reader does not support displaying or filling such forms. The application that produces this form embeds this message into the document so that non-supportive viewers (like ours) will display this "error" page when the document opens. I do realize that this is confusing and I would like to add some additional detection to our Reader for this case. However, we've avoided doing this for fear of confusing users even further. Your feedback helps though. Hopefully we'll find a way to detect this case and present a better message to the user like: This form is not supported by the mobile version of the Adobe Reader. Please open and fill it on the non-mobile version of the Adobe Reader for Windows, Linux or Mac OSX.

  • TC DSL 2740B Connection error

    Hi everybody,
    Hope somebody can help.
I just bought a D-LINK DSL 2740B to spped up my DSL connection, but with no luck.
    Stepwise:
1 I use Windows XP (Boot Camp) to set up the modem
2 Connection via Ethernet works (although with drops i.e. Internet is ok then drops 2/4' adn again).
    3. Reset the modem twice
    4 Reconfigure Internet access
5 At last works in ethernet mode.
6 I connect to TC (1 year old, update OK, last firmaware 7.5.2.)
7 With the TC Application, evrything seems OK, green light everywhere (modem DLInk and TC)
8 Access to internet -> fail.
9 Reset TC with new settings including Bridge mode, no luck.
I tried evereything but didn't work. Il installed my provious modem (Philips SVN multi-purpose) and everything fine for now.
Any idea of what needs to be confiegured on the DLink/TC to work properly?
    Thanks

To set up the router, first you use an ethernet cable to connect your computer to one of the numbered ports on the WRT54G.  Do not connect the modem yet.  Then use the setup disk that came with the router.   Put the setup disk in the computer's CD drive.   Follow the instructions on the setup disk.   The setup disk will tell you when to connect your modem to the Internet port on the WRT54G.

  • DSL Modem/Router Upgrade

I am tired of my modem/router dropping connection when playing my Xbox for awhile. It kicks me out of games and parties. I am considering Netgear's new NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Wi-Fi VDSL/ADSL Modem Router (D7000-100NAS)to replace my existing modem/router as it seems to be more powerful and better suited for gaming. Has anyone used this new Modem/Router and would ATT support it?

Hmm, I think that the gateway might just be defective if it's just rebooting randomly on its own. Make sure you try different outlets to rule out faulty electrical wiring. If the gateway is on the floor and it's carpeted, try moving it to a different surface.
I see that you mention you have a 7550, because of that, you SHOULD be able to use the D7000 with your service in replacement of your 7550 and WNDR4300. Just make sure you purchase it from somewhere with a good return policy in the case that something goes wrong.
When installing a new device, make sure you have your AT&T username and password ready if asked during device PPPoE setup.
Just remember that when using a non-AT&T supplied gateway, you aren't guaranteed to receive support from them for certain things. You must be prepared to instead contact NETGEAR.

  • AX as client with third party modem/router

Like others, I'm having trouble getting my AX to join an existing network from my third party modem/router (in this case a Siemens SE 515 dsl). After 2 days of sifting posts, changing settings and reset after reset, I'm about to take the thing back or just toss it out the window. I really only want to use the AX for AirTunes but do want to be able to surf at the same time.
My modem/router is set as PPPoE with login details and PPPoE pass-through is enabled, as is NAT. The modem is set to get IP address automatically. WEP-128 is on and I've activated MAC access control (and am sure it's the correct id for the Airport). It's set for DHCP in the range 192.168.1.xx. WDS is activated and the router detects other devices around the place.
In Network settings on my Powerbook I've selected PPPoE and also entered the login details here. In the TCP/IP tab, IPv4 is automatically set to PPP and the computer gets an IP address but it's in 84.xxx... range. Internet access works fine when I use these settings.
Now, reset the AX, in Airport Admin I set it to client (I don't need to extend the network), entered the WEP key and selected the router network name from the pop-up menu. In the Internet tab I select DHCP, in music tab AirTunes is on and I've entered a speaker name. Click update, then...
    Nothing happens.
Well, not quite. The orange light on the AX is flashing. When I go into iTunes, the Airport is listed in the pop-up at bottom right but when I select it, iTunes says it is trying to connect and, after a while, fails. Airport Admin can no longer find the AX either.
My hunch is that this is something to do with IP addresses but I really have no idea. Any hints gratefully received.

    1. your modem/router should not have "PPPoE pass-through" enabled. The PPPoE connection with your ISP must be handled by the modem/router itself - not by your Mac. The modem/router should be functioning as a NAT router, and all the wireless clients (like your Mac and the Airport Express) of the modem/router should be connecting to it using DHCP.
    2. I don't know why you activated WDS on the modem/router. It isn't necessary, and whatever WDS flavor is supported by this modem/router won't be supported by the Airport Express. Turn it off.
    3. On the Powerbook, in System Preferences->Network->Show Airport - (a) under the PPPoE tab the box to "connect using PPPoE should NOT be checked and (b) under the TCP/IP tab the only selection should be to configure using DHCP.
Before proceeding to the next steps, you must now make sure your Mac is still able to access the internet wirelessly.
    4. Do a factory default reset of the Airport Express. Temporarily switch wireless network connections on the Mac from your modem/router to that of the Airport Express. Run the Airport Admin Utility. In the Airport Admin Utility, select the mode to be "join an existing wireless network". Below that, type in the SSID of your modem/router. Enter the same WEP type and WEP key as used on your modem/router. Make any other configuration changes required under the Music tab, then update settings to the Airport Express. When finished, switch the wireless network connection on the Mac back to that of your modem/router.
    5. If you still have trouble, remove all security (MAC address filtering and WEP) from your modem/router and see if you can then get the Airport Express to connect as a client.

  • Officejet Pro 8500A unable to connect wirelessly to Ubee Modem/Router

I recently upgraded to a new "all in one" Ubee Modem Router (Model DDW366) and have spent hours attempting to wirelessly (both using Wizard and entering info by hand) print, but nothing has worked.  The only way I am able to print at this time is by printer cable connected to my MacBook Pro.  I'm unable to print wirelessly from my MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad.
HP will not advise me on how to solve this problem as printer is no longer under warranty and Cox Cable who sold me the Modem/Router combo are not willing to assist with this problem.
Can anyone advise me on how to print wirelessly again?

    Hello @drlogan0,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand that you are encountering problems with getting your Officejet pro 8500A onto your new wireless network.
    I would like to help.
i would try restoring the network defaults. This will help erase any 'old' information that may be stuck in the printers memory. I would like to give you specific steps for this, but I am unsure if you have the 8500A, 8500A wireless, or the 8500A premium.
Basically the steps are, go into the network menu, and select restore network defaults.
If you have tried restoring the network defaults already, please review the following troubleshooting documents.

  • Do you have to set up AE inBridge mode with existing wireless modem router?

    Hi
I've just bought the AE and Apple TV. My plan was to basically use my existing Netgear wireless modem router for the internet only and set up the AE as the wireless router. I also bought the AE to boost the strength, print wirelessly and I thought it might work better with the Apple TV. The other things I use on my home network are ipad, iphone 4, HP DV6 Notebook, Toshiba Notebook and PS3.
I've plugged the Netgear into the AE with an Ethernet cable. I initially started with the "replace existing access point with AE", as I thought I was replacing the Netgear with the AE. This option left me with internet working and a blinking amber light on the AE.
I then did a hard reset and started again. I diabled the wireless on my old modem/router and chose the "create wireless network" option in airport utility. I think it worked because I have internet and a green light but to be honest I have no idea what I did. I know it's in bridge mode but only because I didn't know how to set up the other options.
Also, I've ended up with three networks out of this process. The default network for the AE (but it has one of those yellow error icons next to it in the available network list), the one I set up and a 5ghz of the one I set up. Neither the default network of the 5ghz network show up in the Internet and Networking control panel, which is where I delete them. I just thought this was odd.
    What I'd like to know:
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
As you can probably tell I have no idea what I am doing. I'm basically just clicking stuff and seeing if it works.
    Any help/advice is much appreciated
    Thanks
    Jo

Hello Jo Sugden. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Do you have to set it up in bridge mode when you have an existing wireless modem/router?
You don't have to but, most likely, it will be the best configuration choice when you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) connected to your main Internet router by Ethernet. In this configuration, all NAT & DHCP services will continue to be provided by the Netgear router. This will allow all wired or wireless clients connected to the AEBSn to get their IP address (and be on the same subnet) from the Netgear ... and this would allow clients connected to either router to "see" each other.
If not, is there any benefit to setting the AE up as the router instead of using the Netgear?
If, for some reason, you wanted to create a separate subnet, configuring the AEBSn as a router would allow for this.
If I create a new network should the default network still be showing up in my list of available networks or have I done something wrong?
By default, your AEBSn will create two wireless networks with the same Network Name; one broadcasting in the 5 GHz band, and the other in the 2.4 GHz band. The default name for both of these will be Apple Network NNNNNN. You have the option, within the AirPort Utility, to change the names of each network.
When connected by Ethernet, and in bridge mode, it would be beneficial to name your AEBSn's networks the same as that provided by the Netgear. This would create what is called a "roaming" network ... where you literally can roam with a laptop from one router to the other and still be on the "same" network. This also is a way to extend the wireless range of the Netgear.
If I have a 5ghz network, does that mean that the other network I created is only 2.4ghz or is it still dual band?
As a minimum, you will have three wireless networks: one provided by the Netgear and two provided by the AEBSn. By giving them all the same Network Name, they will appear as one to any wireless client. However, they will all show up in a utility like iStumbler or AirRadar.
Considering the devices I have would it be beneficial for me to have a 5ghz network for certain devices only like the Apple TV?
Yes. Operating a wireless network in the 802.11n Radio Mode in the 5 GHz Radio Band offers the best potential bandwidth ... around 300+ Mbps. The only real drawback of the higher frequency band is that the signal strength drops off more rapidly with distance than in the lower frequency band. Also higher frequencies cannot penetrate objects (like walls) as well.
Ideally, you would want to place your Apple TV or other streaming devices in the same room as the 5 GHz network ... or connect them to the router by Ethernet.

  • Link an 871 router/switch wirelessly to an ISP-provided DSL modem//router?

Hi, Upstairs we have a 20-Mbps ISP-provided DSL wireless modem/router, and one floor lower, in basement, I would like to install a refurbished 871 Cisco router, without adding a separate Internet connection. I would like the 871 to connect wirelessly to the DSL router.  To the 871 I would wirelessly connect 2 workstations, one of which will host 3-4 virtual machines. The 2 main reasons for this weird arrangement are so my virtual machines and virtual switch do not interfere with upstairs devices connected to the DSL router, and so I can practice Cisco router//switch configuration downstairs where I reside, without added expense of a separate Internet connection.   Would I need a separate repeater between the two routers?   Humbly requesting any other feedback.
    Jeff

To have all routers using the same Network Name and wireless password, you would have to configure them for a roaming network. This would require that the Extreme and Express connect individually back to the Pirelli router via an Ethernet connection.

  • Can Anyone Help Me Configure My Verizon (D-Link) DSL-2750B "Traffic Shaping" (QoS)?

Well ... I just spent a wonderful hour and a half (not) bouncing around VZ technical support, etc. trying to get assistance regarding configuring my DSL router.* Between the low-quality Skype connection to India and my lack of success, I'm a little bummed out right now.
Could one of you perhaps help me? I'm trying to configure a single, wire-attached network node (port 4 of the router) so that it can only consume up to 320 Kbps of my 750 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) DSL bandwidth ... no matter what. This results from this node consuming virtually all of the circuit's bandwidth when streaming or during bulk file transfers.
I have tried to remedy the problem using priority with no discernible impact.
The Quality of Service (QoS) element called Traffic Shaping (Services | QoS | Traffic Shaping), described on Page 51 of the VZ DSL-2750B User Manual , appears to be the ideal solution to my problem. Repeated attempts at activating this QoS have all resulted in no throttling of bandwidth consumption.
My most recent attempt was to define the device on Port 4 as the DMZ host ... and then apply a new rule (320 TX, 320 RX) to this interface. Again, no joy.
Does anyone have any experience with this service on this router?
Am I chasing my tail trying to configure the router without validating that my circuit is not configured with "Fastpath (PSE) inactive"?
If the circuit configuration is a potential problem, which office should I ask for at VZ customer service?
Here is the information from the System page of the Router Control Panel:
      Gateway ID: PX2M1BC000000
      Software Version: 5.4.12.1.44
      Release Date: Feb 19 2012
      Platform: D-Link DSL-2750B
      Board Tag:... Ntag-5_4_12_1_44
      Compilation Flags:... LIC=/home/bat/bat/dlink_bcm96328_5_4_12_1/20120219_1343/conf/jpkg_bcm9636x_dlink.lic CONFIG_RG_PROD_IMG=y DIST=DLINK_DSL2750B
I'll note that the Router provides a notification that "RX QOS might not operate when Fastpath (PSE) is active" when I update the router configuration page concerning Traffic Shaping. Because Fastpath is not mentioned in the User Manual, I'm guessing that Fastpath (PSE) might be a configurable attribute of the circuit servicing my PoP, but I have no idea if this is the case.
I searched for relevant messages on this board ... without success. If this has already been addressed, please provide a link, and accept my apologies. (My Google-Fu tends to be weak.)

The asterisk in the first post refers to the following summary of events:
10:40 - Attempt to solve my configuration question using VZ chat begins.
10:49 - VZ chat agent Danish refers me to phone support.  (Chat ID number is 020813176471 if you're with VZ and are interested.)
10:50 - Call VZ phone support.
11:02 - Talk with Angel.  Because she has not heard of, nor received training in, "traffic shaping," she says my question about configuring this VZ DSL modem must be addressed by "Premium Technical Support."  She transfers me.
11:13 - Talk with Pamela.  Premium Technical Support only responds to questions about 3d party products.  Because my question concerns a VZ DSL modem, Basic Technical Support is responsible.  She transfers me.
11:17 - Talk with Joe.  He says either the vendor (D-Link) or premium technical support is required.  Because I had already tried with D-Link (they referred me to Verizon, as this modem was built exclusively for VZ), I explained what I had already experienced, and described how I wanted "assistance configuring my VZ DSL modem, specifically a feature described on page 51 of the User Manual."  He transfers me.
11:23 - The automated phone system asks for my 12-digit customer ID.  I wasn't able to find it fast enough, and rolled through to Financial Services.  Eventually Trig picked up, listened to my story, and transferred me to "Technical Support" providing the direct dial number, just in case (866.945.79xx).
11:32 - Entered the phone queue.  Lots of hissing and clicks.
11:35 - Talk with Monika.  (The voice clarity from this point onward was on the order of 1st-generation Skype.  Between the horrible language problem -- Monika is in India don'cha know -- and the lousy line quality, this was the most frustrating.)  No matter what I said, I couldn't convey the reason for my call.  I asked to talk with a supervisor, which Monika related was not possible.  She also related that she could not transfer me to an American POC or supervisor.
12:01 - Hung up the phone ... and started down the path that led to my post immediately above.
I was repeatedly queried about the account name and number throughout the process.  Conveying this information was especially challenging during the Indian call segment.

I don't think this is a mirror problem, because using other connection, and other router I don't have this problem...

  • Configuration of WPA on D-link DSL-604T

I'm using my Mac BookPro to configure my new modem (D-Link DSL-604T)and it all works fine, but when i try to set WPA it won't save the changes. I've followed the instructions to the letter, do i have to use a PC to configure it. As it is at the moment anyone can connect to my wireless network without entering a password, so i have to disable my wireless connection. I must be missing something simple here, I have reset the router a couple of times and started from scratch. As i've stated it all works fine except for setting WPA incription. Any help would be great.

Sure wish I could do same I can configure the router to a point. To reboot I have to go though the wisard and as i said in my post when I try to set a password in WPA, I click on the green "save Button" then the password I typed in disapears. But when i use a windows with IE it all works, so i don't know what the issue is with my Mac I must have something turned on that i shouldn't.
Anyway thanks for letting me know your experience it sure would be nice to not have to use a windows machine to do some of the config.
    Pete
