D20 (4158) Win7 upgrade from pre-loaded Vista

I have a D20 preloaded with Vista Business and want to upgrade to Win7.  I noticed that the "ThinkStation Hardware Maintenance Manual ThinkStationHardware Maintenance Manual" (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/53y4348.pdf) lists Windows 7 x64 recovery discs as FRUs, presumably orderable from Lenovo.  Are these suitable for what I am intending to do (I would be doing a reformat-and-reinstall) or do I have to go with a boxed version purchased at a retailer?  The advantage of going with the recovery disc would be to get all appropriate drivers and branded help files.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

the recovery media is only available to machines shipped with windows 7. If you want windows 7, you would have to get the retail pack from major computer stores.
You can get all the appropriate drivers by installing the Thinkvantage System Update software after you install the retail pack of windows 7.

    Hi:
Try installing the Vista driver from your notebook's support and driver page and see if that fixes the issue.

  • Upgrading from XP to Vista with no recovery drive.

    Hello,
I plan to upgrade from XP to Vista. I have the whole 160 GB disk allocated to XP as a C drive. I have no problems in formatting it while changing to Vista.
The problem is that Lenovo gave no Vista DVD when I bought the laptop. Everything was given in the recovery partition which I formatted when I downgraded to XP. So how should I change back to Vista ?
Also I was browsing through the Lenovo Drivers website becoz I need Vista drivers once I install Vista onto the laptop. There are different versions of drivers available for my laptop's type-model, so how should I know that which one works best or which one was given in the factory installation from lenovo?

The simplest answer is to purchase the recovery cd if you were shipped with vista. The tech center can help with your purchase but they can order only what was originally shipped on the laptop. The cost is $45.00 plus s&h and local taxes.

  • Major issues after upgrading from XP to Vista on Qosmio F20

I have recently upgraded from XP to Vista on my Qosmio F20 and have issues. It appears I have lost the ability to change screen resolutions, adjust the volume , brightness etc. Basically I have lost the functions of the laptop. I have also tried updating the BIOS but get the following error message "BiOS updated is not supported OS - Unsupported OS or service pack installed.
This is also making the machine very slow.

Do you have some questions now, or you wrote just a report about your Vista experience on Qosmio F20?
The fact is that Toshiba does not support Vista on this notebook model and because of that you will never have full operating Vista (including Toshiba tools and utilities). For supported notebooks Toshiba has offered special Vista supporting BIOS but for your notebook such BIOS update does not exist.
    Sorry! :(

  • UPGRADED FROM PRE 3.0 TO PRE 10...WAS THIS A MISTAKE????

I have a windows 7 operating system with a (c) drive with over 200gb, a separate slave drive with over 100gb, and 4 gb memory. My Video card is up to date, and quite large since I am an avid online game player.
I love to write, and create videos, and movies, and music for friends family and clients. And in my experience..no software does the job for me like my Adobe Premiere Elements 5.0, and the Adobe Photoshop 5.0 combo pack.  I was happy with my PRE 3.0. loved the ease, the creations, and the finished product.
But then....I realized I was short changing myself  by not advancing into the more modern up to date version. so I upgraded to PRE 10. I was very happy when I did. Called my comp guy and shouted it via text. He was happy for me as well. Then I tried to transfer over a project I have been working on for a month now, over to my new platform. PRE 10.
    MISTAKE!!!
It barely picks up half of the  fade ins, and fade outs I implemented in my project. It wont allow me to even change the size of my timeline or streamlined images without creating large gaps, and not allowing me to delete said gaps. It has been a nightmare, and I've only had it for a couple of days now.
I am very much so a power user when it comes to my comp. I pride myself in getting online daily and tinkering with stuff until I master it...sort of speak. And now this little problem makes me wish I never upgraded at all. please don't misunderstand me...I love the great effects and transitions...if they ever worked on my existing project...I'd love them more. I love the format of the entire APE 10...if I could enhance the font so I could see the actual prompts on top...that would be a plus as well. And I love the fact that the project has a lot more themes...if they would work with my existing project I would be overjoyed.
But they don't allow, and they don't work properly with my existing project. I know you keep reading "With my existing project". I would hate to have to completely do this project over again...but I fear that is my only course of action at this point. Maybe the leap from 3.0 to 10.0 was too much for my little project to bear. Maybe this is not set up properly in my system...which would also answer the question as to why this version runs so darn slow.
Catching up with the timeline when I play it is near to impossible. I have to keep rewinding and playing it over and over again in order for it to play with all the effects I have added to my GIFs and images. Needless to say...I am not a happy camper. I would love for someone to help me with this issue, so I can be on my way to creating videos again. Thank you all for patiently listening to me vent, and for your assistance in advance.
    Peace in the Middle E.

Hello S.G. & VDO Surfer...sorry...didn't see this reply or the one after this by VDO Surfer till just now.
I create videos out of JPEGs, GIFs, and WMVs I find online. of course I give them credit at the end of my productions. I have but one that was not done for a client which is on youtube. that was my first ever. I am sure its not the computer giving me trouble, as I recently had a blue screen crash, and had to wipe it totally clean. in doing so I only uploaded the images and GIFs I needed to complete this tribute video I am creating.
I started it out in PRE 3, and when the comp crashed, I was able to get it off the old HD, and put in onto the other one. I didn't plan on upgrading until after I uploaded it onto  my new comp. Once I upgraded I began having all sorts of problems. It plays choppily, and acts as if it has to catch up with my prompts.
Again...I started this out in PRE3 so it was fine then. It did kind of the  same thing, now that I think of it. I had to keep rewinding it, in order to get it to play straight through  after it has caught up to itself. before I installed the upgrade I was online with the adobe chat rep. they told me all I had to do was download the newer versions and they would completely override the older versions. they didn't say that the projects previously created would be hindered by the newer version. and when I asked them that, they said 'oh no...no problem at all'.
So I did my homework. its ok though I will do it the old fashioned way. Back to the drawing board. I have already begun. and the funny part is, even doing it from the beginning...its still a little choppy. I guess that's how it is with this program. no matter if its a new project or existing one...it still plays back a little choppy.
I do have one question for you guys. When you have to delete and close a gap...why it is that it sometimes does not comply....causing me to move all of the frames over to fill the gap...manually?

  • Upgrading from Pre 7

    Hi all.
I wish to upgrade from my Pre 7 and photoshop elements 7 bundle to the version 10 bundle.
Looking at the prices for the upgrades on Amazon.co.uk, it appears that the cost of the upgrade bundle
is considerably more expensive that the full version of the bundle.
Since, in my experience, upgrades of any softeware have invariably been cheaper that the full, version I
am somewhat confused and unsure what to purchase.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?
    Thanks
    Jim

As Steve points out, the "Upgrade," is only relative to pricing, and the programs, either on media, or via download, are the "full" versions. As the release of PrE 11 draws a bit closer (historically Sept - Oct), some retails might well be "clearing their shelves," by offering even better deals. So long as the offers are from certified re-sellers, I would go with the best price available. I would speculate that we are seeing the best prices, that we'll see, starting about now, though they could fall a few $, between July and Aug.
Good luck, and happy shopping - just make sure that you are looking at prices from certified resellers, like direct from Amazon (not a 3rd party, listed on Amazon).

  • After upgrading from XP to Vista Ipod crashes my computer

I uninstalled itunes and reinstalled according to Apple's Vista upgrade instructions. I was unable to check enable iPod as a hard drive and when I connected my 60 GB Video iPod my computer fatally crashed on 3 separate occasions. Looking for any help I can get.

Seeing as you have already read the articles from Apple about Vista, there is nothing I can say except to wait for the next version of iTunes, which will fully support Vista.

  • UpGrading from XP to Vista

    Hi there.
Im thinking of upgrading my T61 from XP to vista.
I know I can just format my c: drive then install Vista just like desktops.
However, i m aware of that there is a hidden drive with operating system image and other important staff in it. If i format my disk, i will probaly lose the data in the hidden drive. That's cruel and not what i want.
    The question is this:
Is there anyway to upgrade both my OS and the hidden drive to support Vista together ?
For example, i want to be able to use the blue ThinkVantage buttun to recovery my system with Vista, just like what i can do with recoverying my XP now.
Also, I have my own Vista Business, is it possible to install my own Vista without paying for a new one ??
    A lot thanks...

First, make the XP recovery discs just in case you ever need to go back.
Second, The easieast way to have a Vista recovery partition is to use the fectory Recovery discs. I think you can do your own Vista install, Install Rescue and Recovery along with the other drivers found here. Then Rescue and Recovery will make a recovery image for you.
If your Thinkpad has a Seagate Hard Drive you can use Disk Wizard to make your own recovery discs. With the full version of Acronis you can make an "Acronis Secure Zone" which is a hidden partition you access with F11 at startup. It allows you to restore the computer from there.

  • Catch 22 after Win7 upgrade from Vista (no way to install Boot Camp)

I've seen other posts about this but no answers, so I'll keep this
I had Vista Home Premium running in a Boot Camp partition on my black MB 2.0GHz with Snow Leopard, although I only used Fusion and not Boot Camp for Windows. (The Boot Camp partition dated back to the program's beta, which I ran on Tiger. I skipped Leopard.) I replaced the hard drive with a larger model -- thank you CCC and WinClone --, upgraded to Win7 Home Premium and thought I'd try getting Boot Camp running.
The Snow Leopard install DVD has a Boot Camp 3.0 installer that refuses to run on Win 7. (The error message that I get is, "Boot Camp requires that your computer is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista.") And the Boot Camp 3.1 Updater is, well, an updater that wants to see Boot Camp 3.0. Doesn't seem to be any way forward!
I've seen it recommended to try a Boot Camp 2.1 installer (seems like a long shot, but has anyone tried it?) or to run the Boot Camp 3.0 installer in Vista compatibility mode (reported not to work).
It doesn't feel worth it to re-image the MacBook's Boot Camp partition to Vista using my WinClone backup, then install Boot Camp 3.0, then do the Win 7 upgrade again, and then run the Boot Camp 3.1 updater. Not when Fusion is so good. It took me several iterations of the restore-and-upgrade business with Boot Camp Assistant and WinClone to get to this point and I'm not eager to repeat it. It's not hard, just tedious. It does seem likely that that upgrade path would work, however. Practic makes perfect.
    Thoughts?

And just one more thing... I'm remembering now that when I started up the Win7 install, I got a warning that Boot Camp wouldn't work after the upgrade. I don't know which version that would have been. I went ahead with the upgrade anyway. Knowing now how that worked out, I can see that I probably zigged where I should have zagged. But I remember thinking at the time that my options were to cancel the upgrade, uninstall Boot Camp and then try the upgrade again. It didn't occur to me to upgrade to the 3.1 version of Boot Camp because I thought that was the Win7 compatible version, and I was still on Vista at that point.
Maybe all this verbiage will help someone else avoid this situation!

  • Upgrading from XP to Vista (Adobe Premiere CS3)

I've been running my Adobe CS3 products on Windows XP, and I'm wanting to upgrade to 64 bit. I want to either upgrade to Windows XP 64, or Windows Vista; and I want to hear if anybody has an opinion on this upgrade: problems with drivers, better operation?

I have to make a reactionary response here. But I am a computer programmer, I have several degrees in Computer Science. I graduated not only top in my class but top in my school (granted it was a small school.) But!
I seriously do not think Vista is the future. Rome certainly looked the future for a long time, same as Microsoft. Microsoft is certainly falling though. I am not certain what the future for over all computing is. I think it will be something link Linux (if not Linux). Microsoft has become giant, unwieldy, and bloated. (Just like it's software.) Beyond that though, we who edit on Microsoft products have already missed the boat! Macintosh is the present! So sorry, but I have to fundamentally disagree with that.
Though, I sincerely thank you for your opinion on its operation with Premiere. That's what I was looking for user's opinions.

  • Just upgraded from pre '05 iMovie... help?

Greetings. For years have very happily made quick videos with pre '05 iMovie. (Remember the "clips" in the "rack" top right?)
Just started a Video Club with fourth and fifth graders, so thought I'd update to iMovie '11.
Seems every bit of intuitive ease and speed is gone. Am I wrong?
Any suggestions for discovering the "hidden genius" in iMovie '11 would be much appreciated. (Must I buy a third-party manual? After DECADES of using Macs, FCPro, etc. this would be the first time.)
And I'd love to do simple things like move my mouse through the clips without the sound scrubbing away; I'd love to place audio without iMovie deciding to place it somewhere else for me; etc.
    Thanks.

    yes
you're used to the 'standard' metaphor of any other NLE, the timeline etc etc.
iM11 is no successor of iM-a (≤ vers6), but a from the ground new app, iM-b.
you have to learn it new, here's how:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/interface/index.html#button-0
and according to speed: in iM-b, everything is now real-time, in iM-a you had to wait for any applied title or effect to be 'rendered'.
... (Must I buy a third-party manual? After DECADES of using Macs, FCPro, etc. this would be the first time.)
watch a person, which has no experience with iM-a - iM-b IS intuitive, not for us Silver Backs. And, btw, without a book of Tom Wolsky, you're lost in FinalCut! ....
... I'd love to place audio without iMovie deciding to place it somewhere else for me; etc.
you can place any audio with (almost) frame-precision, same as in iM-a, by switching iM11 into a timeline-mode. but most iM-b users like to play LEGO with audio and video, therefor that 'bricks'-metaphor, the preset interface offers, is +well enough+ .
especially movie-maker-beginners, in my experience, love the simplicity of iMovie - no handles, no layers, no codecs, no 'techniqué'.
spend some time with the tutorials, mentioned above, BEFORE teaching others ...

  • Upgrading from Pre Paid to Post Paid or Contract?

    Hello,
I have been a pre-paid customer for more than a year and just found out I can change or upgrade to a "Post Paid" or Regular account?  What is the process  or how do I go about doing this? Are there extra fees involved with processing the request or deposits required to do so? Last but not least, am I able to keep my same phone number?
Thank you in advance for any info!
    Deb

Yes, it is possible.  You'll need to contact Verizon's postpaid customer service, and the number can be found under the "Contact Us" link on the top right of this page.  I do not believe there are any fees, but you may need to pay a deposit.  Verizon will check your credit and make that determination.  If you are OK with whatever deposit they decide to request, you can set up the postpaid account with your current phone number.
