D20 Raid 1 setup

Hi,
I am able to install and boot into windows when plugged into the raid ports, but when the raid is created the drive does not boot and display no operating disc found. Seems as though the raid wipes the drive. I select the primary drive 1st in the Raid creation process.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Justin

We need more information to understand what exactly your issue is.
What are "raid ports"?  D20 consists of blue ports (routed to the onboard Marvell controller) and black ports (routed to the Intel ICH legacy AHCI controller).
I think you're saying you can boot a single non-RAIDed drive plugged into the blue ports, but when you try to RAID two drives on that controller, you're not able to boot the RAID array.
-How are you creating the RAID array?  Are you using the Marvell OPROM (ctrl+m) during POST?
-Assuming you've created the RAID array correctly using the Marvell OPROM, are you then ensuring the RAID array is listed in the boot sequence?
Once the RAID array is created successfully and showing in the boot sequence, you'll still have to get an OS put on the RAID array (assuming you want the array to be the bootable partition).  Boot to your installation CD, and then provide the Marvell controller driver when prompted in order to see the array in the list of available drives.  I don't believe the Marvell drivers are native to any of the win7 installations (including the service packs) and they must be supplied manually.

Yes, just not on the RAID. Boot Camp Assistant will only partition a single drive containing OS X. You cannot partition a RAID array.

  • I want to add another hard drive to my exsisting RAID 0 setup - how can i do this?

Hi all, wonder if somebopdy can help me
I have my computer setup as follows:
    1 x SSD - used for my O/S - windows 7 ultimate 64bit
2 x 1 TB hard drives - WD black series in a RAID 0 arrar
Now Im slowly but surely running out of space on the RAID ( the two hard drives) so im thinking about purchasing 2 x more of these exact same hard-drives to add to the RAID but iv never done this before and obviously I cannot lose any of my data currently
saved on this RAID - as iv deleted everything I don't use or want
what is the best way to back all my data up and how would I add 2 x new hard drives to my RAID 0  so that it will include 4 x 1 tb hard drives in total
thank you hope somebody can help

    Hi,
You have to know that with a RAID 0 (striped set), if any drive in the array fails for any reason, you will loose all data on the volume. In this case, the more drives you add, the greater the chance for failure--with increased I/O.
Being you already have a RAID 0 setup with two drives, you cannot just break the stripe--you will loose all data if not backed up.
To effectively add another drive to your RAID 0 implementation, you will have backup your machine--making an image is the best option--break the array, add the drive and then restore your image.
About how to extend the raid 0, you may need some third-party tool to complete. Here is some references for you:

  • Mistake on raid 1 setup?

I just built my first pc. I have the P35 platinum Combo Mobo, Quad Q6600, XP Pro and 2 Maxtor 500GB Sata2 drives. The problem: I have only 1/4 capacity available.
I believe I must have messed up the raid setup.
    1) Should each volume been given a different name? I did not do this both are named volume0.
    2) On the volume capacity field I entered half of the listed max value as was stated to do in manual. I think this was the wrong thing to do?
    3) I did not manually create a second volume. I thought this would be automatic in a raid 1 configuration, should I have done this?
    4) I then created the the specified volume, this turn out to be a 232.8GB capacity raid 1 not the 465.6GB I expected.
    5) Was this my screw up if so can it be fixed with out wiping the disks and starting over.
     Thanks

Ok....what is it an example of,... raid 1? When I saw the word important I figured this example was to be followed, if not why is it there? Very confusing.
I remember reading elasewhere that on a raid1 you set up the volumes to half your drive size and when finally configured the total size would equal the the size of one drive, in my case 250 +250 = 500GB in 2 volumes.
It goes on to say on page C-6 "The second volume when created will automatically span the remainder of the two hardrives."
I did not manually create a second volume. I beileve this was my mistake. I wrongfully assumed it would be created automatically as this was raid 1 setup.
The manual does not go on to explain how to create the second volume.
My question now, is can I still create this second volume to span and increase the raid1 capacity? Or should I just wipe the drives and start over? There is software (Intel Matrix Storage Manager) loaded that will create Raid volume from existing disk. I wonder if this could be used to solve this problem. Has anyone used this?
    Thanks again for the help

  • Conversion of ad20 non raid to a D20 raid 1 and keeping existing OS/data

I have a new D20 with windows 7-x64 pre installed on it.  I purchased a second Lenovo supplied sata add in drive to convert the system to raid 1.
When I add the  “raid 1” in support in the bios,  the system when it reboots does not recognize the existing windows 7 partition.
When I used “other mfg” on board raid configuration, the working partition was considered the master partition and was automatically mirrored to the  new added drive (making it raid1)
My expectation was that there would be either a “thinkvantage” tool that allowed you to do this from the OS, or there would be a some OS add on tool that performs this function
So my question..  Can you convert a d20 non raid to a D20 raid 1 (given drives are the same etc), and if so (I am a glass half full person), what is the process required to do so.
    thanks
    matt k.

if the marvell RAID controller hasn't been enabled, you'll need to install the driver.   it can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73697
after this is installed, boot into the D20 BIOS and enable RAID.   reboot again into the unconfigured drive and see if you can get into windows.   if so, you can set up your RAID 1 array.
if you want to control RAID configuration from within windows, you'll need to install the marvell RAID utility found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73073

  • Dual Booting Ubuntu Linux and Windows on a RAID 1 setup

    Hi,
I just bought a Lenovo W530 with Windows 7 and two 500GB hard drives in a RAID 1 setup, is there a way for me to install Linux with dual boot while maintaing my RAID 1 setup?
    Thanks.

    Hi
    Welcome To Lenovo Community
if you want both in a raid on two drives, there is no way simpler than using fakeraid.
Windows simply has only the fakeraid as a software raid and can't be run from a linux software raid. An Ubuntu 10.10 install to fakeraid is relatively simple but should not be undertaken without some understanding of what a raid install looks like or behaves.
As a starter, some simple rules have to be followed:
    1) Install Win 7 first
    2) If Win 7 occupies the whole raid drive, use Win 7 disk manager to shrink it to make room for Ubuntu.
    3) Use gparted on a live cd to place all your unallocated space for installing Ubuntu into an extended partition. This will insure that you will not likely exceed the 4 primary partition limit and thus bar an Ubuntu install.
Once prepared as above you should be able to install Ubunto to the largest unallocated space, as long as the partitioner recognizes the raid (ie the win 7 partitions will show in gparted). You should plan to run the install from the live cd so that you have determined beforehand that 10.10 will run on your system.

    Hope This Helps

  • RAID 10 Setup Help

I built my new computer and decided to go with a RAID 10 setup. After installing windows and rebooting I got a RAID critical warning during boot up. I identified the drive that failed and returned it. I installed the replacement drive and I still get the same error. Is there something special I am supposed to do when I replace one of the drives?

You serious? Only ONE Raid10 array, no disk for storage of media, projects, exports, previews?
Yes the computer runs fine. Windows boots and all programs work. I have
lost no data. The computer is running on 3 drives right now.
Your mirror may already be souped up if one disk is missing. I'm afraid that you may have to recreate your array, because your mirror is compromised.

  • Unable to move existing installation to software RAID-1 setup

I have an existing Arch Linux amd64 installation which I want to move to a RAID-1 setup.
I followed the following Wiki article:
Arch Linux Wiki - Installing with Software RAID or LVM
with necesary changes applied and some supplemental advice from the equivalent Gentoo Wiki article:
Gentoo Linux Wiki - HOWTO Install on Software RAID
mainly for the "--assume-clean" command-line switch to mdadm.
With a Larch live CD I took a tarball backup of each partition.
Then with cfdisk partitioned the disks.
And copied their partition tables to their RAID-1 mirrors:
    sfdisk -d /dev/sda | sfdisk /dev/sdb
Now, I cannot boot Arch on the RAID-1 setup.
After initramfs is finished, I get a kernel panic as the "/" partition cannot be mounted.
The mkinitcpio.conf that created my kernel is this:
    MODULES="ahci pata_amd ata_generic sata_nv sata_sil"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usbinput keymap raid lvm2 filesystems"
    My rc.conf is this:
MODULES=(raid1 powernow-k8 fuse forcedeth ac battery button fan thermal loop)
My fstab ("/" and "/boot" lines) is this:
    /dev/md0 /boot ext3 noatime 0 1
    /dev/md1 / ext3 noatime 0 1
    And my menu.lst is this:
    timeout 5
    default 0
    color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue
    title Arch Linux
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/md1 ro swncq=1 md=0,/dev/sda1,/dev/sdb1 md=1,/dev/sda2,/dev/sdb2
    initrd /kernel26.img
I even tried another shot by passing all ten RAID-1 arrays (md0 to md9) as kernel parameters, but still, no effect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS: I have created a correct mdadm.conf file with:
    mdadm -D --scan >>/etc/mdadm.conf

My experience with raid suggests that mdadm setups work after boot-up as "software raid".  The array is assembled and "ID'd" with mdadm --assemble command.
IMHO In order to utilize mdadm for boot-up, how does the user "assemble" before the elements needed for mdadm --assemble are accessible?
IMHO My understanding of booting with raid involves the use of dmraid, a "software" raid program which can be adapted to boot use.  It involves changes to the boot sequence to prevent loss of dmraid params during the boot processes such as hardware detect AFAIK.

  • What Is the Best Raid Array Setup for Photoshop?

I'm considering going to a Raid Array both at the Scractch Disk Level 2X Solid State 90GB Drives, and also at the stroage level 3X Hitachi 2TB HDD.
Which Raid Array setups should I use for each?

    Something to consider:
An advantage of RAID 0 is that you get all the space of both drives, while multiplying the throughput.
While RAID 0 also multiplies the possibility of failure, you can offset that by buying high-MTBF enterprise class drives.  The Western Digital RE4 is an example (and is the model I use in my RAID).  Such drives are not really that much more expensive than their consumer-grade counterparts, and the difference is well worth it, IMO.
Do good backups - e.g., to a large external USB drive (e.g., Western Digital MyBook), and you'll be covered against loss of the entire array.

  • RAID 1 setup on Main MacBook Pro Hard Drive Behavior!

    Hello...
    I have:
    -MacBookPro - OS X 10.6.4 - with 1-TB 2.5" Hard Drive.
    -A 1-TB 3.5" External USB Drive.
-Master Hard Drive booting and working fine.
-USB Hard Drive is attached and formatted with no problems.
    My intention:
-I have the will to use RAID-1 as a solution to mirror the master Hard Drive (the only Hard Drive in any Mac Book Pro!) to the 1-TB USB Hard Drive.
-I read that I can do that using the MacBook Pro Recovery CD. This is with using the RAID tab in the Disk Utility.(No problem so far).
    Question/Doubt:
-It is a Laptop Computer, and I take it with me everywhere; normally, I would disconnect the computer from the USB hard drive when I am on the move.
-I would use the computer at work or anywhere else; so, data would be accessed, modified, added, or even deleted!
-Now, if I connect the computer back to the USB Hard Drive, what will happen?
-How would the two RAID-ed hard drives behave?
-Would the Laptop recognize the Laptop Hard Drive as a master/source and the USB Hard Drive as the destination?
-How would the RAID-1 setup treat "rebuilding" for the two drives?
-What would be copied to the Destination drive? all data? changes?
-Lastly, remarks and suggestions are appreciated.
    Thank you...
    Ahmad

I understand what you want to do. You want a raid 1 so you don't have to keep running backups. That is understood. But, disconnecting one drive will not work. What you should do, is get rid of your superdrive and install an identical 1TB drive in its place, then run both internal drives as a raid 1. Then your problem is solved. You will have a permanent backup of everything you do, as you do it on your laptop no matter where you are.
Another solution you could use is have only your system software and programs on your internal hard drive then use an external raid for all of your important stuff. But you will not be able to access your files on the go unless you copy them to your laptops internal drive, Then any changes to files while you are out will not be protected until you hook back up at home.

  • Can I add partitions on a RAID 0 setup?

    Hi everyone,
I just recently bought a used macbook pro, (15-Inch, Early 2008) that the previous owner put a RAID 0 setup on. I want to try out the OSX Yosemite Beta, but i want to try it on a separate partition so I can keep my Mavericks environment intact. I don't know i it is possible, but I would like some help on how to make a partition with the RAID setup on it. (I do have an external hard drive too, is there a way to run Yosemite off of the external instead of messing with the internal on my MBP?) Thanks in advance for your help!!!

This doesn't sound like an XServe RAID question - the XServe RAID is a (now-discontinued) 14-drive RAID enclosure designed for server applications.
I apologize for not knowing where. I know how forum members get upset when people use the wrong forum. It was unintentional.
For a start there's a question of the enclosure... Is the enclosure a 'dumb' enclosure that just connects the drives to your host system, or does it have a built-in RAID controller.
It is not a dumb enclosure - it does have jumpers for setting it up under different strategies.
That is going to be critical in answering your question. If the enclosure has a built-in RAID controller then you will want to use that to manage the RAID 1 mirror setup and you'll likely need to use software provided by the enclosure vendor to set that up.
Where I am at is that DU does NOT allow this system to be used and recognized by TC. I had to set the enclosure under RAID 1 and that is the only way the TC would allow it to be recognized by my network
Once that's done your host system will be presented with a 1TB volume (the RAID/mirror is hidden from the OS) and you can partition that like any other drive.
If the enclosure is dumb it's a little more complex since you'll need to configure the mirror via Disk Utility and then partition the resulting volume (note also that throughput will be lower in this mode since the OS has to write twice as much data over the link to the enclosure - with a hardware RAID in the enclosure the OS only has to write one copy of the data and the enclosure takes care of writing it to both disks).
So, what's the enclosure you're using?
I am using the Hornettek unit.
Thanks for your help. It took me a long time to get to where I am with this unit. TC evidently will not allow it to be recognized if I used DU to configure it.

  • D20 RAID removing

The D20 came with the two drives in a RAID setup and I’m trying to get the machine to a non-raid setup where the disks do not appear as virtual volumes in Microsoft "DiskPart". There are two physical hard disks but diskpart is seeing 4 disks with zero capacity on them.
I’ve broken the RAID grouping with the Marvel BIOS setup, but I think I’m missing a bet somewhere, so any assistance you can give me in how to configure the bios so that the two hard disks look like two "normal" SATA devices, would be most welcome.

go into the standard BIOS and see if you can set the ATA mode from "RAID" to "AHCI".   unfortunately i don't have a D20 in front of me right now to confirm this option exists.

  • D20 RAID problem

    Hello,
    I've a problem with my new D20 ( 4155-21g ). I could not see the cofigured RAID 10
    The story so far...
      1. Shutdown the D20 ( Win XP 32bit preinstalled, 250 GB SATA drive ), no changes overall.
      2. Build in 4 Seagate 1,5 TB SATA-Drives.
      3. Starting the D20, ok, I can see all 5 devices.
      4. Rebooting the D20 and entering the Marvell BIOS Setup to configure a RAID 10 with the 4 Seagate Drives ( as
         described in the manual ).
      5. Starting Win XP and....only can see and access the system drive ( C:\ ).
      6. I've updated the drivers for the Marvell controller but without success.
      7. When i'm using the MRU ( Marvell Raid Utility ) i can see the system drive AND the RAID 10...but could not get
         access to the raid.
      8. The BIOS Settiings are the default ones, with SATA mode selection AHCI, Marvell SAS / SATA Controller
         enabled.
      9. I installed the WinVista 32bit from the recovery CD's on a fresh system drive : same situation.
    10. I also configured a RAID 5 : same situation.
    11. The german hotline told me to google and install the following : MIGR-72045, imo complete nonsens,
because there is a Marvell RAID Controller on board and not an INTEL Controller.
Any ideas how to solve it ?
    Many thanks in advance!

for SATA drives, i do believe you need to install the intel RAID driver because of how the marvell controller is integrated in the system.   if you look at MIGR-72045, the D20 is indeed listed under this driver package even though it's an ICH10 and not ICH10R chipset.
try installing it and see what happens.
if you need a copy of the marvell RAID utility manual, it can be downloaded here from intel.

  • Xp pro clean install on sata but can't get it access my old raid hdd setup

    Hi,
I got the Neo4 nforce4 platinum board and i originally setup 2 300gb maxtor ide hdds to raid which had my old xp pro setup but its seen better days and wasn't legit but i own officially now and decided to do a clean install to the 250gb sata hdd i have. install went well with the exception of loading up the nvraid and storage controller during install which for some odd reason wouldn't copy to the sata hdd but none the less everything runs correctly and after i reenabled the raid, thats where i have a problem.
now after it was set in the bios and rebooted, windows found it as an unknown device which i then set it to the legacy nvraid setup files and installed fine but the problem is that it shows the raid hdd but gives me no access (nor did it come up with the correct name for the drive that was set but the size given was correct) and looking at computer management, it tells me i need to initize a drive which happens to be one of the 300gb hdds thats part of the raid ??? so from seeing that i know theres something wrong so i'm asking what can i do to correct this and get access to the files I already have on it? i don't want to lose what i got on the raided hdds, just wanna burn off whats needed and then wipe the hdd's.

Guys, I Finally got it to show up correctly I first did a mistake with changing the primary ide to nvidia's driver in which caused a BSOD lucky enough last known good option worked and going back to device manager, i noticed it mentioned a dual ide under secondary ide which i thought i'd try the nvidia driver on. sure nuff, after a reboot it found the 2 hdd's as raid and installing the drivers for them gave me access like before
Thanks for the help guys tho theres still one last thing i need to go and change now that i noticed it: the northbridge fan died and i searched around the forum and saw a few ppl recomend but i'm not sure what i can really fit as a replacement due to my Evga 6800u + nvsilencer 5 and didn't see any of the topic mention someone with the same. any suggestions on that?

  • Simple D20 RAID questoin -- needs to be preconfigured?

Does the Thinkstation D20 need to have its RAID "configured by Lenovo", i.e. when originally purchased?
On the Thinkpad W520, I believe you have to select that you want RAID, or else you won't have the right hardware installed, and I wonder if the D20 is the same way.
I am wondering if I'll have to buy all five drives, in the arrays I want, if I want to have RAID in my future Thinkstation.  I'm pretty sure I've seen this addressed somewhere but haven't been able to track a definitive answer back down.
