D20 with Win7(Finnish) + Marvell Raid Utility: Cannot log in as administrator

This is not really just "Lenovo problem", but more like Marvell-issue. But hoping that someone here would have encountered this similar problem.
using: 2x 500GT (Ide-)HD as RAID1, Win7 professional (Finnish version).
Marvell Raid Utility (MRU) uses win7's user database to check out which user has the right to adjust raid-stuff. The MRU is a web-browser -based. My problem is, that I cannot log into MRU with admiministrator rights.
Tried so far:
- My "user name" has all the rights it should
- Checked out that my name is listed in the administrator group
- Made a new user named: Administrator with admin rights
- Cannot launch MRU with "Run as administrator" (it is just a link-icon to a "web-page" : localhost://, etc)
- Tried to use different browsers as "run as administrator" (exploder, firefox, chrome)
- Tried to run diff.browsers as normally
- Tried to log into the mru with different usernames (with administrator rights)
- Tried to install MRU using "run as administrator" hoping that the rights would "transfer" to the installed program
MRU always logs me in as "Guest". It shows that there is two physical discs and a virtual disk has been created. But I can't to anything with the two disks, cannot format them, cannot make anything - windows doesn't even understand the disks - it finds them allright (with: Devices -> diskdrives(?) -> marvell raid VD 0 SCSI Disk Device : Drives (Refresh) // Type: Unknown, State/Status: Unformatted, Type: Not usable, size: 476860MB...)
Solved!
Go to Solution.

you can access the marvell BIOS at POST by pressing ctrl+M.   this will allow you to set up RAID manually.

bad sectors happen all the time.   i wouldn't worry about replacing a drive until you see a critical failure.   if you have no other means of backup (since RAID shouldn't be used as a means of backup anyway) then you may want to look into either OLDB (online data backup) and/or keeping spare drives around in the event of a unrecoverable failure.

  • How can I find my apple ID name?  I changed it to something with a typo and now I cannot log in.

I changed the email account from an old email address to a new email address about a month ago.  I couldn't log back into the account, and when I tried to retrive the password (which I did not change) the website said that no apple ID existed under either the old email or the new email.
I then made a second apple ID to be able to talk to customer support.  This is my second, empty, worthless ID with no purchases in it, not the one I'm trying to recover.  I emailed apple support and, after a month of her giving me directions on how to change my second, worthless ID around to the username I wanted, I sent her some screen shots showing that this account was empty and NOT the one I wanted help getting back into or changing.  When she fininally understood the problem, she told me to call apple, who told me to email her.  So now I'm here.
Have I lost every thing I've bought?  Every single app, song, and season pass?  I mean, all I did was change the email address to something with a typo.

The following article(s) may help you.

  • Lion OSX 7 - Cannot log in as administrator

    Hi,
I have installed Lion, and at the entry screen only gives me the option of two 'guest' accounts I set up ages ago - and cannot remember the password for. There is no sign of my administrator account.
My machine is unusable in this state.
    HELP, PLEASE!

Fixed it - all thanks to AppleCare, believe it or not. Your folder should still be there, it's just not recognised.
I am no expert, so I suggest ringing AppleCare and asking for Damien in Brisbane, Australia. He ran me through it in ten minutes and was excellent. Machine is exactly as it was with new software and no loss of data.
I'm sure there are others who can fix it but I've never had such great service via phone before.

  • Configuring D20 with 2 SSD drives in Raid 0, only a single drive shows up

I had this machine for several years configured with a single 128gb SSD and I decided to put in a pair of Samsung 256GB SSD drives that I had around and I planned on configuring them as Raid 0.  I have plugged them into the blue sata ports on the motherboard and no matter what combination I use it only ever sees one of the drives.  The other device doesn't show up in the Marvell raid utility or in the Bios.  I have updated the bios to the latest and still am not having any luck.  Any feedback is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

I saw this issue also come across my email this week.  We're looking into it here.  It would be helpful to know what specific SSDs you're trying to user (i.e. the model numbers of the samsung 256GB drives) as well as what level FW your Marvell controller is at.  You should see the firmware listed as the system boots and loads the Marvell OPROM during POST.
We've seen situations in the past where you plug two drives in the system, but it only recognizes one (but you can plug each drive in individually and it will be recognized correctly).  Generally this had to do with information in the ID string for the drive.  Either the drive wasn't programmed with unique IDs, or the Marvell FW isn't reading the string correctly and is missing the unique part of the string.  The controller uses that string to uniquely identify each drive.
I'll update this later once we make some progress on it.

  • What happened to Raid utility in mavericks?

I have an early 2008 mac pro with apple's hardware raid card.   After doing Apples "free" upgrade, I no longer have raidutility under utilties...    What happened?
I'm also stuck in and endless loop of appstore trying to update itunes and hp printer driver...
    Sigh.
    Jason

    Hi Jason,
I would claim that the RAID Utility is really a System Administrator app, and not a user app.  And with the end of the silver Mac Pro models and Xserve already out of production, the Apple Raid cards appear to be a thing of the past.
As I manage 14 Mac Pros, from Early 2008 through Mid 2012 models, I'll have to figure out other ways to perform the mirrored disk function.  I think it will be some kind of cron job that runs rsync to keep pairs of disks synced...
I've just installed Mavericks on a test Early 2008 Mac Pro, with RAID card, upgrading from OS X 10.6.8.  So far, everything seems to be going pretty well.  Next week's project is to compile Macports, and install our standard set of Unix utilities.  This will likely be a challenge, for such a new OS.
    anyway, glad to help,
    Roy

  • After upgrading, I cannot log in to windows as administrator. Only user accounts can log into windows. I can make no changes or restor, because I cannot gain administrator access.

I cannot log in as administrator. This happened immediately after installing 4.0

    Hi Tracy,
I don't suspect Malware yet, Id guess Disk corruption or failing Hard Drive with Files not found.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • D20 - 4158 with Marvel Raid + windows 7 failed to restart (Blue screen) after installation

I installed Windows 7 64 bit by providing the Marvell RAID driver downloaded from  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-73716. The installation goes fine, when the computer restarts, the windows 7 logo flashes and then immediately the blue screen comes and then the computer restarts. This continues repeatedly.
I checked the Raid, we have one array with Raid 0 configuration. I could not find out why the OS installation goes fine but it fails to restart
    Kindly provide some technical input.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After double checking the link you provided....I'm confused on your setup.  Can you reiterate which drives you have in the system and which ports they are connected to?
For a D20, you should have all HDDs attached to the blue ports.  These ports route directly back to the Marvell controller.  Then during the OS install, you need to supply the Marvell driver (not the Intel RAID driver that you specified in your link).
The only reason you would supply the drive you listed in your link is if you're attempting to run HDDs off the black ports on the system.  This will work (but is not supported) for regualar HDDs in a non-RAID config.  The D20 utilizes the ICH10, not the ICH10R, so there is no way to utilize RAID off these ports.  The black ports are intended for ODD use only.
So I'm guessing you either have drives connected incorrectly, or you were attempting to provide the incorrect driver during the OS installation.

  • Intel Raid Vs Marvel Raid on Big Bang B3 Marshall (Non OS Drives) via win7 setup

I apologise in advance if this seems lazy but has anybody tried setting up RAID 1 mirroring of two non-essential data hard drives within Windows 7 64-bit as opposed to a bios setup?
I only need to mirror a games hard drive so as not to have to do manually backup the hard drive with Acronis software backup every other day or so.
I have a Acronis backup of the game hard drive as I am aware that creating a raid array on both drives will delete all data on both drives but I can restore my games software later.
As it was a non-essential raid array (non-OS drives) on my previous hardware setup for these two identical games drives before upgrading to the MSI big-band Marshall B3 I totally forgot to set up the raid whilst doing a fresh install of Windows 7 on a dual boot with a previously restored/Acronis universal restore of windows 7 which also had this raid array.
If that all makes sense I'm hoping you guys can put me in the right direction as to Intel on Marvel (I seem to remember reading in the past that Marvel Raid drivers had issues) preferences for a setup within Windows 7 64-bit rather than the bios setup which would mean starting from scratch which I'm not prepared to do on a non-essential, non-OS Raid array.
If however I was doing an essential OS drives Raid array then it's a no-brainer to do a BIOS setup with a fresh install.
    Any thoughts much appreciated, cheers

I don't think you are looking at the right areas.

Sonnet Tempo cards are compatible with most external SATA storage. However, external hard drives with USB 2.0/eSATA dual interface based on the Oxford Semiconductor OXU931DS storage controller chip may not be compatible with Mac OS X when connected via SATA. Known issues are kernel panics occurring when the drive is connected, or the drive not being recognized by the operating system.
Western Digital manufactures Desktop edition (WD Caviar, Caviar SE, Caviar SE16, and Raptor X) hard drives and Enterprise (RAID) Edition (WD RE, RE2, and Raptor) hard drives. Each type of hard drive is designed to work specifically in either a desktop computer environment, or connected to a RAID controller (hardware or software-based). If you intend to configure Western Digital drives in a RAID set, Sonnet and WD recommend using only their Enterprise edition hard drives. For more information, see this Western Digital FAQ.

Not everyone follows guidelines like they use to. Enterprise and RAID Edition drives - even Green RE4 series - not noise. You want a good drive enclosure with adequate cooling from air flow and fans. These are not silent and any drive noise is just background hum and noise that they are working.
    http://macperformanceguide.com/RecommendedESATAEnclosures.html
There are dozens of reviews on drive storage. If noise is over riding then you aren't a candidate for RAID, but you are for SSD and Green, and would find SilentPCReview up your alley.

  • "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."  Trying to format my iomega external HD for use with Mac

Hi. Trying to connect iomega ext. HD. i have to reformat for Mac. When i plug in & go to Disk Utility, the external shows up and i'm supposed to click "partition". When i do, a box comes up saying ""Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." I quit and relaunched, same results. After googling my question, i came up with this:
"Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
(Quitting and reopening Disk Utility does not help.)
The following also appears in Console log:
*** malloc[419]: Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x290a410; This could be a double free(), or free() called with the middle of an allocated block; Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug : for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 27 can't byte swap it)
    Workaround
    Quit Disk Utility.
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder....
Type the following, then click OK: /Library/Receipts
Temporarily remove these iTunes receipts from /Library/Receipts (sort the folder alphabetically as a list):
    iTunes.pkg
    iTunes4.pkg
You can put them on the desktop, for example. Do not remove iTunesX.pkg or iTunes Phone Driver.pkg.
Open Disk Utility and repair disk permissions again.
    Quit Disk Utility.
Put the removed iTunes receipts back in /Library/Receipts.
Note: This issue does not affect Disk Utility's verify or repair disk features.
All seemed good, for a moment, until, upon going back to Disk Utility after removing itunes4.pkg and putting on desktop (i did not have itunes.pkg to remove) the same thing was happening. When i highlite my iomega ext. on left of page, disk perrmissions is grayed and does not allow me to click on it. Same problem from the start. Can somebody please help me out here? That would soooo awesome. Thanx!

i'm just scared i will do something wrong on my own and lose my data.
You shouldn't be scared of that, because you should already have backups. If you don't have backups, then backing up is the first priority.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and restart. When you hear the chime, hold down the C key and keep holding it until the Apple logo appears on the display. You should now see the language selection screen. Select your language, then choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In the Disk Utility window, select the external drive (not the internal). The drive may already have a data partition, in which case there will be another icon below the drive icon. Choose the drive icon, then select the Partition tab. Create a single partition with the default options (GUID partition table, Mac OS X Extended Journaled).
When the partitioning is done, select the startup volume on your internal drive in the DU window. Select the Restore tab. Drag the icon of the startup volume to the "Source" field. Then drag the icon of the newly-created volume on the external drive to the "Destination" field. Make sure you have this right. Then click the Restore button, and the data on your startup volume will be copied to the external drive.

Not sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server
