D411a ad hoc network security

Hello all,
Trying to set up an Envy 110 (D411a) for ad-hoc network printing.
For the life of me, I can't seem to find how to change the ad-hoc network name from the default, or add some security to it.  Any suggestions would be appreciated - thank you.

Unfortunately, I do not have a D411 to try.   You may not be able to change the SSID of the ad hoc network - some you can, some you can't.  I do know for sure, though, that the best encryption that ad hoc supports is WEP, which is not much at all.
It may be easier to get a cheap wireless router and go through that (it does not have to be connected to the Internet).
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
I am employed by HP

  • Automatic creation of ad hoc network

    I regularly have to facilitate workshops using Keynote slides.  I use Keynote Remote to control the presentation which requires the creation of an ad hoc network that is password protected.
    My procedure for this starts with the MBP where in the Finder menu bar I select the Airport Menu then Create Network… and fill in the text in the dialog box.  Then turn on WiFi on the iPad and locate this network and join it using the password.
    I tend to set the same name for my ad hoc network (showtime) and five digit WEP password which means that the iPad just locates and logs on automatically.
    Now I want to automate the setup side as I want to reduce my set up time (and stress) when getting ready for a workshop (it's bad enough having to deal with strange data projectors and hard wired AV facilities) or when returning from a lunch break when I tend to take my MBP and iPad with me for security reasons.
    I have found that Location services in the network pane of System Preferences completely lacking as it does not retain details of ad hoc networks users may create.
    Anyone know of a good third party application that would automate this?  Or a good Apple Script for Mac OSX 10.6.7 that would do it?

    I'd forget about administering administrators, and framework-level activities here, and go down a level.
    Here's a built-in low-level monitor for local networks:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport -s
    You'll typically see the MAC addresses, names and channels involved.  Polling that data could probably be scripted to broadcast a notification from a local (trusted) client, too.  Roll that up with generic MAC data collection and you can probably identify the client device involved.  (Until the gremlins discover MAC spoofing.)
    The usual (technical) response to detecting and preventing these networks is not via client settings — phones can do ad-hoc these days, after all — but rather via tools that can explicitly detect rogue access points (APs) and such; an old intro and some Cisco Radio Monitoring details.
    Some APs can send disassociate packets into rogue network, though that's a solution and an approach that I'd view rather skeptically, and would want clear and explicit administrative and legal buy-in before deploying anything like that.  Same for collecting and saving MAC data and locality data; that can potentially be personally-identifying data.  Remember also to account for the possibility of MAC spoofing when forming any administrative or disciplinary policies here, too.

  • Disable Ad-hoc networking

    Due to recent security concerns, my company's networking team has begun looking into how one might disable ad-hoc networking on both Windows and Mac computers. Windows computers appears to be fairly easy - it's a check box in the Windows wireless management software. I have disabled internet sharing on the Macs through group policy, but have not found an easy way to disable ad-hoc networking. Any recommendations?
    Thanks in advance!
    Bryan

    I appreciate your response. Let me clarify. I am a personal user and created the ad-hoc network sometime back. I've tried disabling and or deleting it but have had no success. I can't find any documentation on the Apple support site and am looking for any thought as to how I might go about it.
    Thanks

  • How do I store the configuration of an ad-hoc network?

    I have created and Ah-Hoc network in Mavericks, pretty easy. Connection to my iPad works too.
    My MacBook is connected via LAN to the internet and via the Ad-Hoc conection to my iPad, the reason for that is that I work in a secure environment and this way I don't have to add my private iPad into our business network but can still share documents and I can use the connection to securely share documents while commuting.
    But I haven't been able to figure out how to store this configuration so that I can use it permanently. I don't find an option for that in the Airport Preferences.
    Is there a way to script that? Using Automator or so?
    I am BTW good with the terminal, if there is thus a hack to do it with vim I will have no problems.
    THX

    Look into keeping multiple "Locations".
    Each one is a collection of settings intended for a different place, e.g, work, starbux, home. A whole raft of individual settings are carried along with the Location file, and choosing a different pre-set "Location" sets them all.

  • Ad Hoc network keeps disappearing

    I've created an Ad Hoc network for my Eye-Fi card to upload pictures directly to my computer. However, when I login to my other network, etc and try to re-log on to my Ad Hoc it's gone. Are Ad Hocs not saved in OS X?

    No, ad hoc network connections are not preserved for security purposes.

  • Can't connect ad-hoc network after IOS 8.2 update

    Hi,
    This is my first post on Apple Discussion so please ignore grammatically and other mistakes if i made.
    I am using iPhone 5S 32 GB factory unlocked and working very well in INDIAN network.  I use to connect ad-hoc network created on my Window 7 Desktop via Wifi Surf-n-share Belkin USB.  It is working very well and connected always until i updated IOS 8.2.
    After IOS 8.2 updates, iphone couldn't connect ad-hoc network.
    Is there any bug for this issue or security update.??
    Help would be really appreciated.
    Awaiting some good response.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi abidmomin,
    Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
    It appears that after updating your iPhone to iOS 8.2, you're not able to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
    I recommend starting with the tips in this article to troubleshoot the situation:

  • Using netcfg for an Ad-Hoc network

    I have an app on my phone that allows me to tether via an Ad-Hoc network.  So I want to set up a netcfg profile.  I'm using what lcpci refers to as "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)" and I'm using the iwl3945 module.  Here's what I wrote:
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    DESCRIPTION="A simple WEP encrypted wireless connection"
    INTERFACE=wlan0
    SCAN="yes"
    SECURITY="none"
    ESSID="G1Tether "
    IP="dhcp"
    IWOPTS="mode Ad-Hoc essid $ESSID"
    But ... it doesn't work.  This is what netcfg reports:
    [root@pwn network.d]# netcfg tether
    :: tether up - Wireless association failed. [FAIL]
    Interestingly enough, iwconfig states that it is in Managed mode, even though I used iwopts to set it to ad-hoc:
    [max@pwn ~]$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    wmaster0 no wireless extensions.
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:"G1Tether "
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Tx-Power=14 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
    Power Management:off
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    eth0 no wireless extensions.
    Something else that is interesting: if I try to switch modes while the interface is up, it will fail:
    [root@pwn network.d]# iwconfig wlan0 mode Ad-Hoc
    Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
    SET failed on device wlan0 ; Device or resource busy.
    I have to manually bring the interface down with ifconfig, set it to ad-hoc, then bring it up.  Perhaps this has something to do with it, I'm not entirely sure.
    What should I try to make this work?  If I use iwconfig, I can associate with my phone just fine.  It gets an IP and I'm able to go online, so it works.  And also, is there a way to use netcfg to set ad-hoc mode without using IWOPTS=()?
    edit - Yes, I know there's a space in the essid, it's supposed to be that way

    Hi,
    Thanks again for your time.
    This is what happens when I try to run netcfg.
    [sam@sony ~]$ sudo netcfg g2
    :: g2 up [BUSY] dhcpcd: version 5.1.4 starting
    dhcpcd: wlan0: waiting for carrier
    dhcpcd: timed out
    This is my configuration file
    [sam@sony ~]$ cat /etc/network.d/g2
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    DESCRIPTION="Automatically generated profile"
    INTERFACE=wlan0
    HOSTNAME=sony
    IP="dhcp"
    DHCP_TIMEOUT=10
    ESSID="g2"
    SECURITY="NONE"
    KEY=""
    SCAN="NO"
    TIMEOUT=15
    PRE_UP="ifconfig wlan0 down; iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc; iwconfig wlan0 essid g2; ifconfig wlan0 up; dhcpcd wlan0"
    I even stopped the wicd daemon. No difference. It keeps trying to connect to the home network even with the router switched off.
    Not sure where to go from here.

  • ITunes Remote app on Ad Hoc network (Windows 7)

    Is it possible to use the iTunes Remote to control a computer that is using a wireless card to create an "Ad Hoc" network.  I plan on building a computer for storing my Apple Lossless files on a Windows 7 machine and using it strictly for playback as a standalone device.  I will be pairing it with a USB DAC & Headphone amp combination.
    I either need to buy a monitor (not wanting to do this) or find a way to be able to navigate my iTunes library from this machine without a screen (prefered).  I will NOT have an internet connection at work where I will be using this, however I could purchase a wireless card to install in this itx machine to create an ad hoc network provided I could then use the iTunes Remote app to control playback and view albumn art, etc.
    Is this setup possible, or am I chasing a dream?

    I have the same problem. How did you fix this?

  • Having trouble setting up an Ad Hoc network with both iOS, Mac OS, and Windows.

    So I'm skiing with some friends but we forgot to bring a router with us.  The lodge internet is passable but we only have one ethernet connection.  My friend connected his (windows) laptop to the ethernet and set up an Ad-Hoc network.  The problem is that only Mac OS and iOS devices are able to connect to the network and use the internet.  The windows machines and Droid devices can't connect or in some cases they can connect they can't use the internet.
    My question is what special wizardry allows Mac OS and iOS to work fine on the ad hoc network but not the other platforms?  Is there something I can do to get the other machines to connect to the network?  Would things work better if I hosted the Ad Hoc network? Thanks for all the help.

    Hi Munkiez, and a warm welcome to the forums!

    Sorry, I'm not sure. What's the output of "sudo /etc/rc.d/avahi-daemon stop" ? I'm not at my arch box now, but I'll check in about 24 hours.

  • Network Security Requirement : Confidential - Not Enforced

    I am having a perplexing problem with the network security requirement feature in SJSAS 8 Update 1.
    In deploytool, under my WAR, in the security tab, for my only SecurityConstraint, I set the Network Security Requirement to CONFIDENTIAL. This should cause any access to thse objects over port 80 to be redirected to https via for 443.
    The failure is that it does not redirect clients accessing over port 80 to a secure connection. The tricky part is that it fails in a completely random way. Sometimes for some WARs it will work as expected, then after X number of server restarts / redeployments, some of the same WARs will not do the redirect as expected. Through continuous redeploys and restarts during development, all WARs will or will not do the redirect in any given situation.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem and worked around it? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

    The following is the deployment descriptor for one of the WARs (this problem affects them all, on multiple different machines with different setups).
    The following is from the Security Contraint:

  • Can connect to router but not ad hoc network. Works fine with iPhone.

    My brand new ipad on ios 3.2.2 connects fine to my router and my jailbroken iphone running Mywi. However, I cant connect to an ad hoc network set up on my laptop running vista. My iphone connects to the ad hoc without any problems. I've tried everything, static ips, wep, wpa, hard resets, restoring, resetting network settings but no go. How can' everything else be fine but not connecting to the ad hoc network, especially since it works fine to connect with the iphone?
    Btw, the ad hoc is for controlling music software on the laptop through wifi. It's not for getting internet.
    Can anyone shed some light on this?
    Many thanks,
    L

    Hi and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Did you try doing a search, upper right corner of this window, on remote control? There have been a number of discussions during the last two weeks about remote control problems.
    There have also been discussions about networking an iPad via another computer, such as iMac or MacBook Pro, using the computer's wireless card rather than a router.
    See if one of those will answer your question.

  • Ios7 can't connect to wifi ad-hoc network

    Hi,
    I have a problem connecting my iPhone 4S to the ad-hoc wifi connection my macbook creates when "sharing" the ethernet internet connection through wifi, with iOS6 it worked flawlessy. I have no problems connecting in wifi to my router though.
    Anyone experienced that? Could you try?
    Thank you

    For what it's worth, I contacted the support team at Avatron (the developer of Air Display) and asked whether they had any workarounds. Here's what they came up with:
    Thanks for contacting us at Avatron support about the issues that you've been seeing when connecting via an ad hoc network. I was unaware of this problem but after doing some testing this morning it seems to happen with one of our iOS 7 iPad 2s as well.
    While this definitely seems like something that Apple needs to address, I was able to get Air Display working over the ad-hoc network if I disabled internet sharing from the Mac System Preferences > Sharing pane. Obviously the drawback of this is that the iPad will no longer be connected to the internet when you are using Air Display in this manner.
    Please let me know if this is able to serve as a temporary workaround while Apple investigates the problem.
    Cheers,
    Aaron

    Clearly this is not a full fix as I can't access the internet when connected to my ad-hoc network, but at least I got Air Display running.
    Their reply also suggests that this isn't a blanket issue covering all devices running iOS7, as only "one of [their] iOS 7 iPad 2s" was having the same problem.
