D700 RAW Issue leading to frozen Aperture

I'm new to both Aperture and a D700, just out of the box, so excuse any stupid questions. I couldn't get Aperture to import RAW files initially (as has been discussed elsewhere on the forum in relation to other Nikon bodies) so I downloaded and installed the RAW Update 2.4. It seemed to solve the problem briefly but then Aperture froze. Have tried restarting the computer but every time I launch Aperture the window opens but it's dead, nothing is clickable. Any thoughts? Should I try calling Apple?
Thanks,
Tom

Oh alright, seeing as how you asked. The reason it seemed like Aperture wouldn't re-launch was that for some reason the little window asking if I wanted to use Aperture when I connect my camera was appearing with only a sliver of it's top edge showing at the bottom of my screen. I wasn't noticing it in the clutter of my desktop and so it seemed like the app had frozen while opening. See why I was reluctant to explain this? If this board offered "emoticons" I'd be placing a "blush" one here now!

  • D700 RAW update not working?

I just installed the new raw update which adds support for D700 RAW files. When I try to view these, it now generates a mini-thumbnail (128x128px?) but won't generate anything larger than that... any ideas what's going on? I can apply adjustments and they take effect, but I still only see a mini-picture.

  • D700 RAW Images Overexposed by ACR

Is anyone else having problems with d700 RAW images being significantly overexposed during the conversion process in Lightroom? The preview of the images are spot-on, beautiful and perfectly exposed (I know this is the JPEG data) and then it's as if some gremlin wreaks havoc - the histogram disappears and when it comes back, voilà! A harsh, overexposed image is what is left. I typically have to manually "underexpose" each image in the develop module between 2/3 and 1.5 stops - sometimes 2 - to get the exposure into the same neighborhood as the preview and then have to perform a boatload of other adjustments to correct for the flat, cold tones. It's adding so much time to my workflow, I'm afraid I may have to switch over to Capture NX2 - it seems to nail the RAW conversion perfectly - which would be a huge pain in the rear. Any help or direction would be appreciated - this is really a frustrating issue. There is a fair amount of discussion about this in the Aperture forums (Aperture's RAW conversion engine also seems to be blowing out D700 images) but I can't find anything on-point here about LightRoom.
Am using a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.5
    Thanks // Bill

There are three causes for this and No it should not happen. Go to one of your images and hit "reset". The image should return to being correctly exposed and fairly close (but not exactly the same) to the in-camera jpeg.
    1. As Dennis says, it is possible you are applying auto adjustments. Uncheck the preferences for that. While you are in that screen make sure you also reset all camera defaults.
    2. You are applying a preset on import. Make sure there is nothing like that in the import pane. Also make sure to hit reset on any images that were impacted.
    3. Camera RAW (the processor under the hood in Lightroom) is not the same RAW processor as your camera and Capture NX. They will render RAW differently. Read this
FAQ entry for an explanation. You can make Lightroom render the same colors as your camera by using the
Adobe Camera matching profiles. They really work as
I showed here a long time ago.
There is no good reason to go to Capture NX except when you need a lot of the U-points stuff. You can get Lightroom to render identical to jpegs out-of-the-camera and it is far faster and more convenient than the horrifyingly ugly(in my opinion) NX.

  • Photo file issues with iWeb and Aperture....also too much duplicating!!

A little background, before I get into my iWeb issue.....
Years ago I tried iPhoto, but I didn't like how it duplicated all my photo files and I wasn't very fond of the file structure it created. Years later (last month) I got Aperture. Aperture (still has a long way to go) also duplicates all your files and places them in their own file structure. If I can get along with Aperture (and if it will get along with my other programs), I won't mind putting all my files into the file structure it creates. But for now, I still have my original files in the original file structure I have had for many years as a back up.
On to my issue with iWeb and Aperture....
To add photos to iWeb, you can either go into the iWeb media center or you can drag and drop photos from other locations.
    1st: iWeb media center
To get my photos into the media center, I would have to load them into iPhoto (iP 6 does allow you to keep your original file structure, but it still creates .jpg files, which fills up your hard-drive. More duplicates I don't need or want). So that is out for me. iP6 will let you view and use your Raw files.
Another way is to drag and drop your file structure directly into the media center window. I don't think this duplicates any files (at least I haven't been able to find any), but it takes an awfully long time to thumbnail all your photos (several hours and still waiting for 22K + files). Also, it won't show any Raw files. Again, out for me.
Aperture won't let you drag and drop its library into the media center at all. So if I was to move all my files into the Aperture Library, I wouldn't be able to access them for iWeb at all.....Out for me.
    2nd: Drag and Drop
I was able to drag and drop Raw files directly into iWeb from C1 Pro, Adobe Bridge and Adobe Lightroom.
As I said before, I am trying to move over to Aperture. However, Aperture won't let me drag and drop photos. What is the deal here??? These are both Apple programs and they won't play nice with each other. Very annoying.
Anyway, I put a link below to my iWeb test webpage I made. All the photos were Raw files that I did a drag and drop from C1 Pro, Adobe Bridge and Lightroom. There were no problems with the publishing.
    http://web.mac.com/phil_navarro/iWeb/Site%202/Drag%20and%20Drop%20test.html
So, does anyone know if they can get photos from Aperture to work?? Thanks for any responses.
    Phil
    G5 Desktop   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Jedi,
    Perhaps you are right.
I am not a web developer and I will never be. I don't feel like spending countless hours learning how to use Dreamweaver or some other Pro web app. iWeb looked like a way to start making websites of my photos for my friends and family (much easier and better than Home Page on .Mac). All I was asking was for a way to drag and drop my photos (especially Raw files) with Aperture. Which I can do with Lightroom, Adobe Bridge and C1 Pro, and without using iPhoto.
I am not a Pro photographer either, but I purchased Aperture based on what was advertised on the Apple website. From that ad, Aperture fit my photo needs almost to a tee. I am looking to adjust Raw files, Crop, Archive and keep my use of Hard Disk space down to a minimum. I can use Photoshop for the other 5% of things I do. However, Aperture has some issues (if you own it, then you already know. If you don't, you can read the Aperture Forum) This is one of the reasons I never went to iPhoto for archiving. I didn't like the way it duplicated all my files, taking up more disk space and its file structure. So even though Aperture won't play nice with other programs, I was surprised that it wouldn't play nice with any Apple programs.
After reading your post and based on what you are saying, everyone either needs to have/learn/use Pro apps only or have/learn/use iApps only. Don't Cross the Streams!!
I guess that means Apple will need to fix DVD Studio Pro. It uses photos that are in your iPhoto library and music from iTunes (iApps in a Pro app??....for shame...."it was never intended"). Also, DVD SP won't read the Aperture library. Does that mean there are 3 platforms? Pro, iApp and Mediocre??
    Now I have 2 questions:
    1. Can someone please tell me which apps are Pro and iApp, or if there is Mediocre? I don't want to mix them up and "Cross the Streams".
    2. Again....is there anyway to use Aperture with iWeb?
    TIA,
    Narvon

  • RAW files and exposure in Aperture

I'm using a Nikon D90 and I shoot RAW/Fine JPG.  Using Aperture 3.4 and OS X 10.8.3, I import my photos into Aperture as RAW/JPG pairs with the RAW file as the master.  I know Aperture quickly imports the imbedded jpg to show the thumbnails and then processes the RAW the file to create a new thumbnail.  I've noticed in most cases, the original imported jpg before processing looks fine, but when the RAW is processed, the image turns considerablly darker so that each picture now needs a boost in exposure.  I try to get the exposure right in the camera, but even when the picture and histogram look fine in the camera, the RAW-processed file in Aperture is always darker.  Is there a way to avoid this and get RAW processed files closer to the jpg's I see in the camera and on the initial import?  Thanks

I've just found a fix, or at least a temporary one until Apple sort Aperture out.
When loading the RAW or NEF file in Aperture, wait for it to over expose the file. Then try this,
1 - click the Adjustments tab on the left of the screen
    2 - click Effects
3 - hover over Quick Fixes
    4 - select either Exposure -1 or Exposure -2
-1 or -2 tends to fix my image depending on how much Aperture blew it out by when I loaded the image. Loading the image in full screen after doing that shows a very minor difference, only just detectable to the eye after a lot of pixel peeping, compared to the file loaded in Preview or iPhoto.
So it seems for whatever reason Aperture is applying too much exposure by default to RAW / NEF files. Not sure how to change this or stop it but it could be a setting hidden somewhere. Obviously you could set up a routine to automatically apply either -1 or -2 to all RAW / NEF files on import if you wished or you can do it manually.
This should help until Apple fix Aperture.
I've also raised an issue with Apple about this to see if they can advise a proper fix.

  • Nikon D700 RAW import shows only dotted boxes, not thumbnails

I am unable to see thumbnails of the RAW images on the memory card of my Nikon D700 when I import images into Aperture.
What I see during an import is a series of frames with a dashed or dotted border that represent the correct number of images on the card. I can select these boxes, but the selection is not indicated with any kind of highlighting, just with a number displayed on the import button. I can, however, import my selection, and once the images are imported, I can see thumbnails in the library.
If I shoot JPG images this is not a problem, only with the Nikon NEF files. I am using the Lossless Compressed format plus a normal quality jpg.
My look at other threads shows some people with D200s have been able to solve this, and they have mentioned fiddling with a USB setting on their camera. However, the D700 has no such setting.
Since Apple now supports the D700 in RAW mode, how can I get the thumbnails of the images in the camera's card to show up on screen during an import? It is a hassle not to be able to see which images I'm importing while I'm importing them.
    Thanks!

    Ibartram,
I am having the EXACT same problem as you. I have the new Olympus E520— which like the D700, was not suported by Aperutre until the recent upgrade. Like you I was happy to finally have my new camera supported by Aperture and like you, I cannot see thumbnails of my RAW images on my memory card when using the import function in Aperture.
As you have said: Everything is fine AFTER I import, but prior to import, when reading off my card, only empty dotted boxes.
Also, I cannot see the images in the finder either. Are you having this problem as well?
Do you connect your camera directly to Aperture or do you use a card reader? I use a card reader.
Please let me know if you find a solution to this problem. Or if there is any other information I can give you. It's not just a Nikon problem or a D700 problem. After reading your post my guess is that it's a problem with newer, previously unsupported cameras.
It's no good not being able to see which images I'm importing until after they're imported.

  • Purple and green blotches with Nikon D700 raws

I'm getting some purple and green blotches (mostly purple) with Nikon D700 raws when using the "Camera Standard" profile. This happens a lot during sunset-ish shots. The problem goes away when I select the "Adobe Standard" the profile.
I just tried ACR 6.3 RC and the problem still exists. is this a known issue?
Would be happy to share a raw + screenshots if needed (currently on a relatively low bandwidth connection)

  • Why are Panasonic GX7 RAW photos not visible in Aperture but in OS X Mavericks and iPhoto?

My Panasonic GX7 RAW photos seem to be visible in OS X Mavericks and iPhoto, but bizarrely not in Aperture (3.5.1).
Does anyone know why this would be? Any solution greatly appreciated.
I've been unable to mange a significant number of images for almost 7 months now due to Aperture's lack of GX7 RAW support and am seriously considering migrating to Lightroom 5. Aperture has been my workflow application of choice for the last 7 or 8 years, but I feel the current situation has become unacceptable and deeply disappointing .

That camera was supported in digital camera Raw 5.0.1 and Aperture 3.4.5 or later. As you say the files are supported in iPhoto it seems you have the right Raw file.
Have you tried it with new imports in Aperture does it still fail? What if you reprocess the Raw files in Aperture, any change?

  • RAW Version 4.0 in Aperture 3.4.1 and Nikon D4 ?

Why does Aperture 3.4.1 ask me to reprocess my Nikon D4 files, saying that they are all processed with an oder RAW Version (3.0) in Aperture.
Looks like Apple hat now RAW Version 4.0 included.
Where can I find more information about the RAW Version 4.0 in Aperture.
It looks like it's changing my colors, too.
    Thanks,
    JO

I have not found any info about RAW 4.x in the Support -- where are you seeing the reference?
In my Aperture Library to option to Reprocess is not citing the current version.
Also, choosing to Reprosses the images from my Nikon D800 makes no decernable change in the images when I choose it.
It seems likely to me that with the addition of Skin Tone to White Balancing options, some change in be triggered. I find slight changes if I change from any other option to Skin Tones without using the dropper at all.  You might test toggling between the now three options for white balance without otherwise clicking anything else to see what if any change results.

Either use 'SYLKPIX Developer Studio SE' to develope the RAW files and to save them in another lossless format like TIFF, or try if Adobe's free DNG Coverter can convert your Lumix RAW files to dng. Then import the dngs. This way, your files will still be RAW files.  This works (most times) for my Lumix FZ28.

  • Why won't iPhoto import D700 RAW images?

Yesterday I tried to import 809 RAW (NEF) images from my Nikon D700 camera into the iPhoto program on a friend's iMac. It imported one image, but refused to import the remaining 808! I don't understand why it didn't accept the whole batch.
The iMac in question is a 20" Intel unit purchased new in 2006. The OS system has been upgraded to Leopard (version 10.5.8) and iPhoto to version 8.1.2. There's still plenty of available space (145 GB) on the hard drive.
Any ideas on what the problem might be and how to remedy it?
    Bob

    Larry,
    Thanks for the reply.
I can confirm that D700 RAW images were downloadable to earlier versions of iPhoto than iPhoto '11.
Until January 2012 I had a 20" Intel iMac purchsed in 2007 that was very similar to that of my friend. It also had Leopard  and iPhoto '09, and I was able to download D700 RAW images to it. In fact, one of the main reasons I upgraded that iMac from Tiger and iPhoto '06 to Leopard and iPhoto '09 was so that I could download D700 RAW images.
I now have a new 27" iMac with Lion and iPhoto '11 and have no problems downloading D700 RAW images.
I remain puzzled why the D700 RAW files--with the exception of one--wouldn't download to my friend's  iMac.

  • When importing raw photos from Nikon D90 aperture seems to automatically adjust exposure darker. why? How can I stop this?

When importing raw photos from Nikon D90 aperture seems to automatically adjust exposure darker. why? How can I stop this?

This is typical of the default NEF RAW conversion of Aperture and the best thing you can do is set up a few presets to apply to all of your RAW images to get a tone curve and colors that is pleasing to you as a default. The in camera JPEGs / embedded JPEGs (that you first see during import) are treated to the Nikon "Picture Control" settings that are set on the camera - the RAW's as interpreted by Aperture are not.
I have written extensively and even have a few downloadable presets on my site - look for NEF...

Any one know when fuji X-pro 1 raw support is coming to aperture??

Anyone who might know is constrained from answering your query by strict and strictly enforced non-displasure agreements. Further it is against the rules of these forums to speculate on future releases. There are however, any number of Apple rumor sites that are more than happy to spedulate on future Apple releases and occasionally they even have some basis in fact.

  • Nikon D700 color issue

    Hellow,
I am shooting with a Nikon D700, and my problem with aperture 3 is that when I upload the pictures Aperture will oversaturate or over boost the colors (specialy green). I've already set the Hue boost to 0 but that doesn't work. I am shooting in RAW (NEF), can someone help me? I am realy frustrated about it
I think it would be a problem with Camera RAW from aperture...

This is just too good to miss so i must put my pennyworth in and stir with wooden spoon.
A raw file is not an international standard as are jpeg's. A Standard is needed.
Camera sensors do not record colour. May be a bit of a surprise to some folkes!
Colour is totally subjective. Just like spelling. Therefore the definition better is with the person or people who think it is, for whatever reasons they think it, especially when it comes to photography. Some people say jpegs are best and i am sure they are for them, i say raw is better, do you disagree?
White Balance can not be set by numbers, between differing raw formats when all the companies involved are trying to discredit and rubbish the opposition and cannot even agree a standard format for their own products. How can we expect competitors to share information and why should they? They probably think they share too much already. Even if they did there would be widespread disagreement about what is better. Where can i get a white balance meter so i get it correct? Oh i'm forgetful, my camera has one built in but now i know it's not accurate what am i to do. It has not been an issue in the past so maybe something is going my way for a change.
Red has always been a difficult colour to reproduce and ever since colour photography was invented, it even gave problems in Orthochromatic photography. Blue in Panchromatic so no surprise when we want full colour.
How many people use a dark room these days? You really should. The ambient light will have a greater effect on your WB setting than you may imagine, maybe even more than the difference in the numbers talked about here. My screen at the moment looks white, as i put the tungsten light up the screen turns blue and then yellow as i ramp it down and if i leave it on or off it soon looks white again. By the way what colour or colours are the walls of your room.
Go in to the Shooting Menu of the D700 then White Balance, press right toggle twice and toggle again to change the WB. Toggle up or down to change the colour without affecting the White Balance.
If this does not resolve the issue go back to good old B&W that will and a good one knocks the spots off colour.
By the way you can have any colour of white except black and neither are colours and there is no difference between the two without the odd photon.
An old screen may be passed its useful life. There may be some gain in checking the screen profile it may need calibrating. You can do this several times and save each one, and if you are getting it correct there should be no difference between each one. This will not solve anything but you then know you are seeing the colours of the screen as intended, as these change over time. Allan
