D7000 NEF problem

Hi,
This question is for the Adobe lightroom developers.
I just purchased a D7000 and Lightroom is showing weird, splotchy highlights on alot of night shots. It's almost always occurs where the photo is bright blue, like on bright blue lights. I've uploaded an example photo to flickr and I can send through the NEF and camera JPG files.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/michael_smithers/7350993578/lightbox/
Left - JPG straight from the camera.
Middle - NEF in Lightroom 3.6
Right - NEF in Lightroom 4.1
Interestingly LR4 seems worse than 3.6. There appears to be a problem in the NEF conversion.
Any thoughts, or maybe bug fixes on the way?
Thanks,
Michael
(I just switched from an Olympus E3 to Nikon for better quality and Lightroom lense profile support, and this problem is dissapointing.)

Michael,
I see what you see when I use Adobe Standard as the camera profile.
When I use "Camera standard", I see exactly what you show in the camera-produced JPEG.
Is this a bug? Can't say, really, but you have an obvious workaround.
Hal
I don't think it's a bug - it's just different ways of converting and rendering a raw image.  As Hal says, I find that the "Camera Standard" profile looks pretty much like the jpeg posted.  For my Nikon D300, I find that the "Camera..." profiles are generally much more pleasing to me than Adobe Standard.  I've created develop presets for each of the Camera... profiles, and normally apply my preset for "Camera Standard" when importing.

  • How to open Nikon D7000 NEF Files in Photoshop CS3

i have installed the 4.6 camera raw update but it does not recognise the D7000 NEF Files... same for Bridge.  what can i do to view files directly in CS3?

Every camera model must be profiled and specifically supported, and Adobe only updates the current version of Photoshop when they add support for each new camera.  You should upgrade your tools just like you upgraded your camera.
None of your new camera's NEF files should be viewable by CS3-vintage components, but all of your DNGs should be viewable by such, and if some aren't, then it sounds like your files may be getting corrupted on their way from the camera to the computer.  Are you using a cable to the camera or are you using a card-reader to access the images?  Using a card reader is preferable.  Some cameras have different modes their USB-connection can be in and something other than mass-storage mode can lead to problems.  I don't have a Nikon so am not sure of things more specifically, but if you can use a card-reader and just use Windows Explorer to copy the images that would probably be the best thing.  If you have a new memory card that could also be something to look at.

  • CS4 will not open Nikon D7000 NEF files; Is there a DNC that will open them?

    I have CS4 and Light Room 2
Apparently there is no Camera Raw update for the new Nikon D7000 NEF files for CS4.
I therefore down loaded the Adobe Digital Negative Converter Verson 6.3.0.79 which is compatible with Camera Raw 5.4 or later.
Using that DNC, when I do step 1, "Select the images to convert" I get the message "No items match your search".  It apparently is not recongnizing the D7000 NEF files.
Is there another DNC that will open and convert the D7000 NEF files?

I just bought the d7000 yesterday and was experiencing the same issue with cs4. I downloaded the DNG converter from adobe and selected the whole folder where the raw files were located (I was unable to select individual images) and it worked fine. It processed the files one by one with new name (without the $500 CS5 pricetag for now). The DNG files open in bridge and psd. Perhaps try selecting the folder?  Good luck.

  • LR/ACR color mismatch with Nikon D7000 NEF files

I recently purchased the Nikon D7000. The NEF RAW files are not supported in current versions of LR and CS5.
Downloaded and installed LR 3.3RC. Also downloaded and installed ACR 6.3R1.
Both work with the D7000 NEF-files with ONE exception. If I shoot a "Multiple Exposure" (one feature of the D7000)  the resulting image in both LR and ACR displays in strong "pink"/magenta. All other images display correctly.
If I open the pink images in Nikon Capture NX2 2.2.6 they open correctly.
If I use the White Balance tool (pipette) in LR, I can bring the image back to "almost normal" but the WB values then are Temp: 2150, Tint: -138. Conclusion: the Multi Exposure Image from the D7000 is completely mismatched by LR/ACR. But they are correctly matched by Capture NX2.
This obviously needs to be corrected before final release.
Has anyone else expreienced the same? Is there a workaround?

Can you please supply some sample .NEF images? You can use YouSendIt.com with a target email address of [email protected] Thanks.

It's not a "wrong" error message - it's true, as far as it goes, and it's completely unrealistic to expect error messages to be fully diagnostic - they're a starting point.
    Not wrong?
Let us have a look at the error message:
"The following files were not imported because they could not be read"
This clearly gives the user the impression that there is a reading error where you want to copy the files from. Is that the actual error?
No, the actual error is that the file could not be written at the destination.
It is possible that it is not factually wrong because Lightroom first make a failed copying attempt without giving an error message, then still assumes that the files have been copied and tries to import them, and THEN makes a failed import attempt from the destination and gives the error message. But that would never be anyone's first guess when they experience that error message.
A much better error message would be: "The following files were not imported because they could not be copied to the destination folder."

  • Nikon D7000 NEFs and focus point reference

With the update to process the Nikon D7000 nefs, Apple has introduced a new bug. Now, when you show the focus point overlay, Aperture shows 51 points and not the 39 of this camera.

    Hi,
Not sure I see a question in there. If you feel there is a bug in Aperture you should contact Apple. You can do this through the feedback form *Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback*
As this is a user to user forum there isn't much anyone here can do for you regarding this issue.

  • Nikon D7000 .nef files

I have a Nikon D7000 camera which creates raw files - .nef and my version of CS5 is not able to open them directly. Does the latest version of CS5 resolve this problem?

I'm in the same boat here. What I've done so far is to use Adobe DNG Converter (free) to convert the NEF to DNG. Then drag the folder with the DNG files into iPhoto.
With another batch of files I converted to DNG, then did the sorting and editing in Adobe Bridge and Camera Raw. Then converted the whole bunch to jpg and imported them into iPhoto. I also imported only the highest rated DNG images. (Note that any Camera Raw processing will not be used by iPhoto, but it remains in the DNG file)

  • RAW / NEF problems

I am using two iMacs latest models (27 inch quad-core i7) with on one iPhoto 09 and on the other iPhoto 11.
On both Macs I cannot copy RAW (NEF) files and even some JPG files to the hard drive.
While viewing the photos still on the memory card does not pose a problem. Within Adobe Bridge I can select the option to open in Camera RAW and this all works fine. Same goes for JPG files. It also opens to Photoshop. I just cannot seem to be able to copy the files to the hard drive.
The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “DSC_0004.JPG” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)

Are just some examples to show you that I get those errors with both file types.
The photos were shot with a Nikon D200. Already quite a old model by today standards and as far as I know supported by OSX.
So why can I access the files from the memory card and why can't I copy them to the Hard Drive?
....Most of the photos. While attempting to copy the photos of my sons first birthday (100 JPGs and 100 NEFs) I was able to copy 6 out of the 200 files....

I will format the card.... but I would like to have the photos first. Specially as it is the first birthday of my son. And what struck me was that as long as I try to access them from the card that there is no issue. The issues start as soon as I would like to save them on the hard drive.
** Found that O can open them in Preview and then use Save As... but one by one. This then only goes for the JPGs of course but it is a start. **

  • D7000 NEF Files in PSE 7

Hi all!  I just got a new Nikon D7000 and PSE7 isn't recognizing the NEF files.  It has no trouble opening the files from my old D50.  Yes, I updated the product and yes I installed Camera Raw 5.5 but it still isn't working.  Any help would be much appreciated (before I toss my laptop out of the window in frustration...).

You would need to upgrade to PSE9. Alternatively you could download the Adobe DNG converter. I regularly use DNG raw files in Adobe editing software and the format works well. However I would recommend keeping your NEF files as your back-up copy.

  • Reading D7000 NEF files

I have recently bought a Nikon D7000 and last night tried to read the NEF files which I downloaded from the camera on my PC (Vista). I use PSE8 which, I have learned via these forums, does not support my camera's RAW format. The advice was to use Abode DNG Converter to convert the NEF files into DNG format. I tried this but when I start the DNG Converter application and point it at the folder containing the NEF files, the application doesn't find any suitable files in the directory. I had previously installed Abode Raw Converter 6.2 for PSE8.
I had understood that DNG Converter was a standalone programme is there any reason for me not being able to see the NEF files ??
    Thanks for any help

The advice to check to ensure you're using DNG 6.4 is good, but also keep in mind that the DNG user interface allows you to select a FOLDER, and it won't show you any files in that folder.  A lot of people misinterpret this as the converter not being able to recognize their camera's files.
Once you've selected the folder, just go ahead and run the conversion.

  • Bridge and NEF problem

I downloaded PS6 to my new Mac Mini and Bridge will not open my NEF thumbnails. I did not have this problem on my Mac Book Pro that I was using previously.  Is there something else I need to download or change in preferences?

I finally got my Messaging Bridge (Tibco to a WLS Cluster) to work. See my post 3 messages before yours - to which no-one responded... :-(
So here goes with my suggestion based on what I have done.
              1. Create a Distributed Destination for the WLS queue and "auto deploy" it your cluster. (Read the manual on how to do that, it is quite straightforward).
              2. In the Local Bridge Destination, put :
              Connection URL - nothing
              Initial Context Factory - weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory
Connection Factory JNDI Name - <your JMS conection factory name>
Destination JNDI Name - <the JNDI name given to the Distributed Destination>.
              I hope that works.

  • Nikon D7000 .NEF files are not opening

I am a new, lucky owner of the Nikon D7000 but, sadly, am unable to open my RAW (.NEF) files in iPhoto -- I am told that the files are an "Unreadable" format.
Now, while I may use the Nikon software provided, I would much rather use iPhoto for my editing.
Is there anything I might be able to do -- drivers, codecs (?) -- to get this opening?

I'm in the same boat here. What I've done so far is to use Adobe DNG Converter (free) to convert the NEF to DNG. Then drag the folder with the DNG files into iPhoto.

  • LR 4 and d7000 NEF files

I am unable to import NEF files from a d7000 into LR 4.3, but can import them into LR 3.6 without issue.  What do I need to change in LR 4?
It's running on a Mac and latest updates are installed.  Thanks!

Sorry, should have included more info.
When in the Import mode, I can select all my photos (it displays previews
just fine), yet when I start the import the dialog box the "the following
operations could not be performed" pops up with the photo file numbers
listed below.  The puzzling part is that even photos imported and converted
to .DNG w/ adobe DNG converter will not open in LR4, nor will .jpg or .nef
files that I can import through LR3.6.
I feel there is some setting that just needs to get changed in LR4, but for
the life of me can't figure out what it is.
    Thanks!

  • PSE8/ACR won't show Nikon D7000 NEF files

Just got my Nikon D7000, but now it turns out, that PSE8/
ACR can't show the NEF files from the camera! What to do?

The Nikon D7000 will be supported by ACR 6.3, which should be released soon.  It is already available in Adobe Labs as RC, which will probably only work with Photoshop CS.

  • Ps4 nikon d7000 nef

how can i edit my nef files from a nikon d7000 in ps4

Good thinking, but that option relies on ACR to read the file, so it only works with ACR support for the camera.
What I think would be a really great idea is to offer the DNG converter as a Bridge plugin. It should be possible, Bridge can already host ACR, so why not the DNG converter? It would save people from that extra step.
I routinely convert all my raw files to DNG. Some people think that's risky, but I don't agree, I think quite the opposite. DNG is openly documented, and I believe the DNG format will be around a lot longer than the proprietary formats. It might even, when the camera makers come to their senses, become the standard it should have been a long time ago. If Leica can do it, so can the others.
