D800 / CAMERA RAW SHARPNESS ISSUES

Perhaps somebody else is also having this problem:
I own a Nikon D800, which performs beautifully, but I have hit a snag with it:  If I open its raw files using ACR (for later edition either in Lightroom or Photoshop) even though they contain a staggering amount of detail, they somehow fail to live up to the expectations a full-frame 36MP camera generates regarding image sharpness.
To further illustrate:  I also own a Fuji XE-2, which has an APS 16MP sensor, which, however, offers stunning, razor-sharp images almost every time I press the shutter.  Opening these files in ACR is a delight and you have to edit them much less than the D800 files to get the image you had previously visualized.
However, if I open the NEF files using Nikon's own Capture NX-D software, voilà!  The images look as sharp as they should have from the start in ACR. But, if I export the resulting edit, via TIFF, either to Lightroom or Photoshop, again you feel disappointed, they are too soft:  I did not pay a hefty chunk of my cash for the camera and lenses to get soft pictures.
The gist of the problem here is that Capture NX-D is a fine piece of software but it handles a little stiffly when compared to ACR and introducing it in my workflow would slow things down.
Does anyone have an idea how to overcome this problem to get sharp images from NEF files in ACR?

Nikon has a raw conversion software in their camera and computer-based applications which consists of algorithms and parameters that guide the application of the algorithms to render a JPG.
Adobe has a raw conversion software which consists of algorithms and parameters that guide the application of the algorithms to render the raw data as an RGB image that you see, and eventually save as some file format.
The raw conversion algorithms are proprietary within each company and Nikon parameters that may be embedded in the NEF file are only relevant to Nikon software.  Let’s say the sharpening parameters in the NEF file are +3.  What does that mean to Adobe which has an Amount slider of 0 to 150?  So Adobe ignores the Nikon-specific sharpness parameters.  Until Adobe and Nikon are the same company (as well as Canon and Sony and Panasonic and Olympus and Leica, etc) Adobe will have different algorithms and parameters to guide the raw conversion than the camera manufacturers.  Some day we may live in a society where the state provides all photography hardware and software and everything is the same, but until then, there is competition between various companies and intellectual property rights and patent laws that keep each from knowing exactly what the other is doing.
Adobe converts raw files from many models and brands of cameras.  For the most part they use the same algorithms and parameters for each of these models and brands.
Suppose you work for a photography company with many photographers where some use Nikon and some use Canon and some use Sony, etc, and it is your job to work on each of those raw files.  If Adobe had one set of sliders for Nikon files and another set for Canon files and another set for Sony files, in other words if Adobe tried to do the things as specific to the camera manufacturer as possible, then it would be difficult to work on the raw files across the various camera manufacturers.  If you use Adobe software it shouldn’t matter what brand or model of camera you’re working with, the workflow should be similar and the results similar to the extent the raw data, itself, is similar.

The 5DmkIII needs at least Camera Raw version 7.1. CS6 comes with Camera Raw 7.0. Have you ever updated Camera Raw?

  • Camera RAW update issue with Bridge CS6

    Hi folks,
I recently installed a routine update for Camera RAW 8.4 and now have a bunch of issues with Bridge including -
    - No previews or ratings showing
    - Ratings filter not working
    - Can't open images directly into Camera RAW without first opening Photoshop (ie - keyboard shortcut not working and File menu command "Open in Camera raw" not available)
    - Can't access or open Camera RAW preferences
I've tried resetting Bridge to default settings but didn't help and ACR still works fine opening in PS. I've attached two screenshots to show the problem better.
Anyone else having these problems? Any solutions?

  • Nikon D800 Camera Raw and CS 5

I rently bought a Nikon D800 and my Photoshop CS 5 Extented (Education Edition) cannot view the files (not in PS nor in Bridge). Can you send me a link to a downloid that would make this possible? My Mac Operating system is OSX 10.5.8 and my Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in is 6.0.0.205

There is no such thing. Support for specific cameras in ACR is version specific. There simply is no super-secret updtae for CS5 that would make it happen. You need to upgrade to CS6 or Creative Cloud. Otherwise you'll have to settle for the free DNG converter.

  • Lightroom / Camera Raw / Photoshop issues

I have a workflow problem that's driving me nuts, so I'm hoping someone can help. I organize my photos in Lightroom and do most of my editing in Photoshop CS6. The problem I'm having is that if I select a photo in LR, then work on it in Photoshop, I can't figure out any way to incorporate Adobe Camera Raw into that process. I can open the photos in Raw via Bridge, then process and reopen them in Photoshop, but when I save them, Lightroom doesn't find or recognize them. So what's the workflow to process photos in Camera Raw, then Photoshop, while still having Lightroom recognize them and know where they are?

I agree, the best answers are in the previous replies to the OP.  Use Lightroom.!
    As an alternative-
If you open a RAW image into Photoshop by a Right-click and select- "Edit In" then "Open as Smart Object in Photoshop"  you will have the image open as a background layer in Photoshop with the small corner "smart object" icon.  If you then Double-left-click on the PS layer thumbnail this will re-open the image in  ACR  linked to Photoshop (not Lightroom).  This allows you to have created many extra adjustment layers in PS but always go back to ACR if you save the edited image as PSD or TIFF with layers. This is 'Non-destructive' re-editing of the background layer.

  • Does Lightroom 3 support Nikon D800 Camera RAW

No, you can either upgrade to LR4 or use Adobe's free DNG Converter to work with your images in LR3 as DNGs.

  • Nikon D7000 LR4 Camera Raw color issues

    I just upgraded my camera from a Nikon D70 to a D7000.
Problem: When I process the RAW /NEF files with Adobe Lightroom 4 the color is terrible. By that I mean, the images look dull, dark and have no pop. The coloring is not even close to what is displayed on the Nikon camera screen.
When I use Nikon View NX: The software which is pakaged with the camera produces an image which is, or almost identical to the image on the camera after the photo is taken.
I like the funcionality of lightroom better than ViewNX, so what I have been doing is processing with ViewNX and then exporting to a TIFF.  Opening up LR4 and then importing and cataloging.  This process is a pain and time consuming.
I also have found LR3 does a better job than LR4 at processing the images.
Is there a way I can tweak or download corrected ACR settings to match my Nikon D7000.

I have figured out myself the profile correction problem for my Nikon D7000 NEF Problem. It almost match to the one in NX2 or even on camera LCD.  the following is what I have adjusted in my LR4
    Brightness +1.00
    Contrasts +28~33
    Shadow +40~55
    Black -25
Don't Forget change the Profile setting on Camera Calibration under the Develop mode to match the what you set on your camera. I always shot on Standard mode, therefore I set the Profile to Camera Standard.
The following is the way I figure it out.
    1.  I imported the photo under "Zeroed" at Import page under Develop setting > Lightroom Genaral Present > Zeroed
    2.  Open one of the imported picture on Develop mode
    3.  Scroll down to Camera Calibration change the profile setting to match they one you set on your camera, in this case I choose Camera standard.
    4. Under the Camera Calibration>Process you will see 2012(Present), changed it to 2010, and change it back to 2012 (present again)
    5. You will notice that the develop setting automaticly change to the following (Brightness -1.00, contrasts -33 and black +25) Let say this is what lightroom did to your picture( from Nikon D7000 NEF)
    6. and then Change everything back to " 0 " will you find your picture nearly close to the one you saw on NX2.0 or Nikon LCD
If your found the step above is hard to follow, please just change the Brightness +1.00, Contrasts +33 and Black -25, and dont forget adjust a bit of shadow as well.
for the people who dont know what Nikon done to Nikon D7000, please dont be expert to say "you dont know RAW".  please read more reviews first before helping people who are new to RAW or even stuck on RAW.  This forum is helping people with our knowledge, is not to make people need help to get more confuse.
For Nikon D7000 user.... Remember turn D-Lightning off.... this is one of the problem will cause LR4 change your tone to more darker, especially on portrait photoshot. Hopefully Adobe will realease the new update soon to match the new system inside Nikon camera.
Please note that the step above only Apply for Nikon D7000 and Lightroom 4 only. And it is not 100% correct to what you seen on your camera, at least is 80~90% Match!!

  • Frustrating Camera RAW colour issue

    Hi guys,
I have a really frustrating issue when using CameraRAW in PS. Basically when I switch on the filter CameraRAW it will mess with the colours. I haven't changed anything settings in CameraRAW. I've attached an image to illustrate. Please help. This issue is driving me crazy!
Edit: The most obvious issue is the with red Google+ icon becoming somewhat desaturated.
    Cheers

I am not seeing any change, except in the histogram, when I turn the CR-filter-component eye on and off.
    In more detail:
I have an sRGB-sized gamut monitor but use a ProPhotoRGB workspace in PS. I copy-pasted a crop of your left, more saturated screenshot into PS and assigned it an sRGB profile.  Your PNG screenshot didn't contain any color profile so I just guessed it was sRGB.  Your monitor could be wide-gamut in which case I should have assigned AdobeRGB to be approximately correct.  Because my monitor is approximately sRGB and the image was assigned a profile of sRGB, despite the workspace being a larger ProPhotoRGB, no pixels are outside the monitor gamut, because both the image and the monitor are sRGB.
On the image I'd just pasted into a new PS document, I created a smart object then added the CR-filter and clicked Ok without changing anything and I don't see any desaturation or other visual difference when I turn the smart-filter CR eye on and off; however, I do see the histogram change.  CR uses an internal ProPhotoRGB-wide colorspace and I think this is why I see the histogram change so much when I turned the CR-filter component eye on and off--PS is showing me the histogram as if the image is in ProPhotoRGB instead of sRGB.
I then converted the sRGB image to ProPhotoRGB, and repeated the same SO-CR-filter, eye-on-off, and the online version still doesn't change, but this time the histogram doesn't, much, eitehr, because the image colorspace and the CR-workingspace are similar.
Since your image is changing, I'm suspicious that there are some CR sliders set to non-zero, somewhere, or your monitor profile is very out-of-whack, so PS isn't actually displaying the proper colors.
The desaturation is about what would be expected if you were viewing an AdobeRGB image using an sRGB profile.  Without knowing what monitor you have and whether your monitor profile is properly created, it's hard to guess what is wrong for you.
If you want to upload your PSD, to maybe www.dropbox.com, and post a public download link to it, here, someone might be able to test what happens for them.  I don't have a ColorEfex filter on my side so I'm not sure if that would affect things.  Uploading a version of the image without the ColorEfex smart filter might be good.

  • Camera Raw mouseover issue

a few days ago, when opening Bridge (which I use for editing and organizing Canon RAW digital photo files, which I then edit and convert using CameraRaw), I got a message saying that my CameraRaw application couldn't be found. I quit Bridge and reopened it and CameraRaw was there. But now I have this annoying (small, yet very irritating) problem - in the CameraRaw edit screen (the righthand side, where the edit controls such as Adjust/ Detail/ etc are), the mouse icon gets all flickery. It seems to be fine in all other applications, but it sort of cuts in and out just in that edit area.
This is problematic, because I use it for editing thousands of RAW images pretty carefully. I'm running CS2 and CameraRaw 3.7, so they are pretty out of date, but I was hoping to make it through the summer on my current setup. I can't find my CS2 install disc (my fear is that it's somewhere in the garage... yikes!) so I can't try a reinstall to see if that helps. I use the bluetooth wireless Mighty Mouse, and have tried putting in fresh batteries, but it hasn't helped. This has never happened before (and I've been using this setup for several years) - is there anything that would suddenly make my mouse icon inconsistent, faint, flickery and cut out?
Any ideas? I know it's not strictly an Apple question but figured I could start here... thanks.

    Hi Jessamyn Harris;
I don't think an Archive & Install will buy you much.
I think if you was your Adobe products to work you need to update.

  • Can't open files in Camera Raw while in Bridge CS6

    05/30/2014
Believe this issue/problem happened after automatic update from Adobe (but can't be sure).
Have always uploaded files from camera into Bridge then do some editing by opening JPEG and RAW (NEF) files in Camera Raw from Bridge.
Now, "Open in Camera Raw" is greyed out and I am unable to find a way to open files with Camera Raw from inside Bridge CS6.  This seemed to happen suddenly and without any new software or applications being added to computer.  All other apps/software working well.
Have tried various fixes found on Adobe community discussions without success.  Problem now ongoing for over a week +.
Am able to open files in Photoshop with no problem but want to be able to do some quick edits using Camera Raw opening files from Bridge CS6.
I'm using Bridge CS6 Version 5.0.2.4.  (as part of Adobe Creative Suite 6).  Updater states I have most current version of Bridge installed.
I'm using an iMac computer with Intel Core i7 processor
    OS X 10.8.5
Have found others with this same or very similar problems on forums but either can't understand patches/directions or unable to complete instructions on my computer.
for example see:  Camera RAW update issue with Bridge CS6
From that link/discussion, one finds this "solution":
After you update to Camera Raw 8.4, Bridge CS6 in Mac OS doesn't display image metadata or allow you to edit images in Camera Raw.
    To the top
Manually install the Camera Raw 8.4 plug-in.
    Exit Adobe Bridge.
    Download the file below.
Locate and double-click the downloaded file to decompress it. The resulting file is Camera Raw.plugin.
Navigate to the Macintosh HD folder.
Open the Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS6/File Formats folder.
IMPORTANT: Navigate to the root Library folder on your hard disk, not the Library folder under your user folder.
Copy the Camera Raw.plugin from step 3 into the File Formats folder.
IMPORTANT: This new file overwrites the file already in this folder. It's important that only one Camera Raw.plugin file is in this folder.
    Open Adobe Bridge.
    Camera Raw.plugin.zip
Mac OS Camera Raw 8.4 plug-in for manual installation
However, when I try the above, I have these issues:
    1.  When I double click on the downloaded file, my computer opens PhotoShop and an error message is displayed that states "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file."  (I suspect this may mean my computer has automatically decompressed the file, but I am not certain of that).
    2.  Not completely certain I know how to "Navigate to the Macintosh HD folder" as suggested in step 4. above (OK, I'm new to Mac; long-time PC user….)
    3.  When I am in "Finder" and click on "GO" while holding down "Option" key, I find "Library".  within that, I can find "Library/Application Support/Adobe" but there is no "Plug-Ins" folder within the "Adobe" subfolder.
    4.  Not sure how to tell if I am in the "root Library" on my hard disk vs. "Library under my user folder".  (Again, new to Mac….)
I have NOT yet tried doing an "Uninstall" and then Re-installing the whole Adobe Creative Suite 6 and would like to avoid that if possible.
Would absolutely LOVE it if Adobe would simply push an update that would fix this problem or if someone would explain to me how I could restore the earlier version that worked perfectly for me.
Any help, suggestions (in very basic, simple terms that any idiot new to the world of Macintosh can understand) would be appreciated.  Very frustrated with Adobe at the moment.
Mostly have liked the switch to Mac, but with this and my photo workflow coming to a screeching halt, having second thoughts.  (But I suppose Adobe update for PC may cause problems as well.)
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

    05/30/2014
Literally minutes after I posted the above, I figured this out myself and now I'm a happy camper and things are back to normal!
Here was my error/issue:  as a new Mac user, I was not negotiating/finding files on my hard drive correctly.
In case there are others out there with this same issue (and as dense as I apparently am ):
Here is what I did that resulted in a fix:
    First Steps:
    1. Quit/close Bridge
    2. As noted in post above, go to this link to download Camera Raw Plugin file:
Camera RAW update issue with Bridge CS6
Link to get to download is near end of instructions, but I will attempt to insert that link to download here:
    Camera Raw.plugin.zip
    3.  Once file has been downloaded, find it by using "Finder" Click on "Finder" and look on list of options on left side of Finder window to find "Downloads".  On my computer, when clicking on "Finder" these options appear in the list at the left:
    All My Files
    Airdrop
    Applications
    Desktop
    Documents
    Downloads
    Movies
    Music
    Pictures
    4.  Download you just did should be at or near the top of your downloads list and should be named as "Camera Raw.plugin"  and will be 83.5 MB in size
    5.  I right-clicked (two fingers on touchpad) to bring up drop down options and selected "Copy 'Camera Raw.plugin'" from that list to copy file.
Now, you have copied the plug in that will fix this issue.  The second set of steps below will walk you through how to replace the file that is on your hard drive with this plug in file that you have copied.
Second set of steps (and this is where, as a new Mac user, I was confused initially)
    1. Again, click on "Finder" on your Mac
    2.  On top of screen, find "GO" and click on that.  (You should see "Finder" in the upper right corner of your screen, then "File, Edit, View, GO, Window, Help"  Click on the GO
    3.  In drop down menu that appears, click on "Computer"
    4.  Then, double click on "Macintosh HD" to open your hard drive
    5.  Next, double click on "Library" folder to open that.
    6.  Next, click on "Application Support" folder to open that.
    7.  Then, double click on "Adobe" folder to open that.
    8.  Then, double click  on "Plug Ins" folder to open that
    9.  Now, double click on "CS6" to open that folder.
    10.  Finally, double click on the "File Formats" folder that appears.
    11.  NOW, you should see this:
    12.  Right click (two finger press if using a touch pad) to open window with options.  Select "Paste Item" by clicking on that option.
    13.  You will be prompted with an option to keep existing file OR replace the file.  Choose "Replace" to past the new "Camera Raw.plugin" file to this folder.
Finally, if you now go back and open Bridge CS6, you should be good to go.
Hope that helps someone out there.
Hopefully future updates will from Adobe will be better.

  • Camera RAW and Elements Hang during Thumbnail Generation...

Ever since I upgraded to the newest version of Camera Raw, I have been having issues with Photoshop Elements hanging while automatically generating thumbnails, anyone else notice this issue?
Hang is not quite the right description... So I import a batch of pictures and PSE starts processing the files ("Generating Thumbnails" is in the tool bar at the bottom). After a few images are processed, it just stops. If I try to force an update of the thumbnail ("Update Thumbnail" option under the Edit menu), a broken image just come back. No mater what I do, it just sits there and will not resolve the thumbnail issue until I close out PSE and go into task manager and make sure that the task is killed.
On the other hand, while I can not get the thumbnails generated, I can go into the Editor with a raw image and it opens in Camera Raw without any problems.
Anyone else having similar issues? Know anything to try?
    * Yes I have the most recent version of Camera Raw. When I downgrade to an older version of Camera Raw, the issue seems to go away.
    * I can not use the old version all the time because I have a Nikon D300, which is only supported in the newest version. I confirmed the working of things with some of my D200 files.
    * I am using Photoshop Elements 6.0, mainly for organization of all my images because I take a lot of them.
    * I am doing this on a Windows XP x64 machine
    * Based on a post someplace, I did check that my default printer on my machine is set to a printer that is always on the machine (PDF writer) and not a network printer/printer that has been disconnected.
Thank you for any help/suggestions that anyone can give me...
    -Matt

Have you tried the Elements forum?
Not many visitors here have Elements, mostly PSCS and Bridge.
If you where using Bridge I would suggest to purge cache and or refresh the preferences but I have no clue if this is possible in Elements? :-(
    Edit:
Do you have enough RAM installed, generating thumbnails from RAW can take a lot of energy from the OS...
