D800 Issues

I just upgraded to PSCS6 and now own a Nikon D800.  I use LR3.6 for my workflow and I have ACR6.7 installed.  According the adobe (see here: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html).  Photoshop CS6 will open the D800 raw files, but only after installing a beta version of AVR7.1 (never a good idea to use a beta of anything in a working environment). LR3.6 still wo'nt, and has never opend the D800 files.  Can anyone suggest what I can do?  Has Adobe mistakenly printed incorrect information?

As I said, I expect to be notified that my software will no longer be supported.
I think your expectations are unreasonable...
Adobe offers the free DNG Converter to allow backwards compatibility all the way back to LR 1 and Photoshop CS (with the proper settings).
If you buy a new camera, why would you expect old software to support it? Adobe offers free updates for all current shipping software. As soon as a new version is released (LR4.x) then older versions are no longer supported (LR3.x). You can keep using LR3 with your new camera as long as you convert them to DNG. But since the LR4 upgrade cost has been lowered, again, I can't see why you wouldn't upgrade to LR4 and maintain LR/PS compatibility.

  • Has anyone solved their LR4 / Nikon D800 RAW NEF issues?

I've done a lot of reading on this topic and think I have a handle on how easily the new D800 NEF files can be corrupted by the older versions of Nikon Transfer.
When I began using the camera I accidently made the mistake of corrupting them and haven't had any issues since... until yesterday.
I photographed last night, and imported about 160 RAW NEF files onto my brand new Macbook Pro with Retina for a same day preview for the host.  I transfered the images using ViewNX2 & by association it's built-in Nikon Transfer 2 utility. I used the built in SD Card reader on the Macbook which has always worked in the past.  But alas!!!!!  While they imported fine, LR4 can't import them and gives me the error "Preview Unavailable at this Time".  I should note... Nikon Transfer 2 was set to clear the card after the transfer .
Nikon ViewNX2 can see the images and I'd hoped to fix the issue by just converting them to JPEG's but, no bueno. It tells me it can't.  This is the precise issue I can into when I accidently used the original version months ago on my iMac.  But it's impossible that I have the old version on this unit.  It's less than a month old and I'd downloaded the most recent version from Nikon.  So I'm running under the assumption that the file is somehow corrupted.
I've seen a lot of people running into issues getting used to the new workflow requied to deal with these enormous RAW's.
Here's the all important question. After the files have an issue... is there anyway to recover them???  I can't retake them, the original shots were wiped from the card. So what do I do?  At least Nikon View can see them, so I have to believe that there is some image information there.
Has anyone sucessfully fixed the issue?
Going forward I plan to just import everything directly through LR4, so I think that'll aliviate future heartburn... but what's my "undo" solution?
I know there's a lot that's been written on this topic and really appriciate the support!

What Bob Frost just posted (after fixing the hidden http// part of the URL) worked for the image you uploaded, so try that:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
BTW, I answered 14 to the bit-depth-12-or-14 question the utility asked, and it worked ok on the example corrupted NEF.
Below is what I was typing up and testing before posting, and works to extract the embedded JPG Preview, but does not actually fix the corrupted NEFs, which is a better solution.  I am including it, below, for reference in case someone without corrupted NEFs also wants to extract JPGs from their raw files.  It uses the same tool from Phil Harvey without his customizations to work specifically with corrupted NEFs.
    == Original Message ==
The raw data in the NEF you uploaded appears corrupted or otherwise unusable because when viewing in Windows Explorer using the latest Nikon NEF Codec that supports the D800, all I see is a small thumbnail then black with a few parts of color, however for that one file, at least, the embedded JPG preview is intact, and 7360 x 4912 in size, enough to see the camera-shake blur.

I’m on a PC and you’re on a Mac but the same tool is available - exiftool a command-line program you run in terminal (on a Mac) or in a Command Prompt window on a PC:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
If what you download includes a (-k) then remove it by renaming before attempting to run the command, below.  On Windows I would rename exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool.exe without the (–k) part.  The (-k) tells exiftool to display the exif information by default if you drag-and-drop to it.  While this is normally useful, for the purpose of extracting JPGs from NEFs this might be confusing so I’m suggesting to rename the executable before using it.
Here is the command-line to extract the fullsize JPG from the NEFs and then copy the metadata tags from the NEF to the newly written JPG:
    .\exiftool -b -JpgFromRaw -w %d%f_%ue.jpg -execute -tagsfromfile @ -srcfile %d%f_%ue.jpg -overwrite_original -common_args --ext jpg .
The above command assumes both the exiftool executable and all the NEFs are in the current folder.  The current folder is designated by a single period both at the very beginning and the very end of the command-line.  If exiftool is in a different folder, then supply that path instead of the initial period, and if the NEFs are in a different folder, substitute that folder-name for the final period.  The final period has a space separating it from the preceding –ext jpg.
It is also assumed that only NEFs and the executable are in the current folder.  If there are other files, they may confuse things so you might want to move things to a temporary working folder, and I’d suggest working with a copy of the NEFs just in case something goes haywire, you’re not overwriting the originals, corrupt as they may be.
For reference, the above command-line was simplified from a more complex example that didn’t quite work with your file, one that conditionally extracts either the full-size JPG or the tiny JPG-thumbnail.  The example is the last one in the Copying Examples section, here:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/exiftool_pod.html#copying_examples

  • Bridge Issue with D800

Just upgraded to CS6 on a Windows 8 Pro system and when I open Bridge some of the images will show up in the preview pane while others won't. If I double click on those that don't they will still open in ACR. Why can I see some images in the preview pane while others I cannot?
I have installed all the available updates for CS6 but the issue still persists.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

When I upgraded to CS6 I went staight for the available updates, so never did try the 7.2 version. For now CS5 is working perfectly fine, but the CS6 issue is still a little frustrating.
ACR 7.3 is a recent update but this will not solve your problem because you state CS5 handles the files fine and CS5 uses ACR 6.xx. And ACR 6.7 as well as ACR 7.1 where the first version to support the Nikon D800.
Double check if you have only one version of ACR installed (in Photoshop look at menu Photoshop/ about plug ins and see if the correct version is showing and only one file).
Maybe a purge cache for the folder you are uploading the images to might also help.

  • CS5 / ACR 6 Update Issue / ACR 7 D800 Support

I have been running the CS6 beta for a while now. I believe it may be causing and issue on the Mac when installed along side CS5. There are updates available based on my search for ACR6 as compared to my current version but Appliation manager indicates that CS5/ACR6 has no updates available. I noticed this when I received my D800 a few days ago. So...
    1) There is a version of ACR 6 that supports the D800
    2) Application Manager thinks that everthing is up to date.
    3) ACR 7 does not seem to support the D800
    What gives?

  • Tethering issue lightroom 4.4 and Nikon D800

I'm having trouble tethering my Nikon D800 to Lightroom 4.4.
Attempts at tethering mostly produce "No Camera Detected" after File > Tethered Capture in Lightroom.
There have been some occasions however when the camera was detected and tethering functioned for a short while.
These successful occasions happened using the same approach and equipment.
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Version 6.1 (with i7) and both camera and Lightroom have been updated.
    From Terry: [email protected]

Thanks for the help. I have made progress this way: I updated the drivers for the Nikon D800 on the computer. Lightroom and Nikon's ViewNX2 were already fully updated. This didn't help. I deleted NikonView, restarted, and found the problem gone. Lightroom tethers as it should without ViewNX2 on the machine. This is still a mystery to me but I can tether.

  • D800 camera raw and cs5 issue

i have a nikon d800. i have cs5. ps5 wont open RAW files. i have tried plugins, upgrades etc but just cant get any joy. i have 64bit windows home premium. no luck. any help?

You need to update your Camera Raw plugin to 6.7 inorder to work with the Nikon d800 , check the link below:-

  • Nikon D800 NEF upload issues

I have new copies of Photoshop CS6, Bridge CS6 and Lightroom 4.3 - all from Creative Cloud.  Additionally, I have a new Adobe DNG converter and a test copy of Elements 11.  None of these programs will recognize Nikon D800 NEF files, even though Adobe specifically lists this format as supported.  I have tried to update all of these programs but that makes no difference.
At this time I cannot contact Adobe - they might as well be in an alternate universe.  Any Help appreciated.

If your using nikon transfer, then older versions are known to corrupt the newer camera raw files in such a way that adobe programs won't read them.
The newest version of nikon view from the nikon website should include an updated version of nikon transfer that won't corrupt the files.
As an experiment you might try taking a few pictures and transferring them to your computer without using nikon transfer and see if that makes a difference.

  • D800 / CAMERA RAW SHARPNESS ISSUES

Perhaps somebody else is also having this problem:
I own a Nikon D800, which performs beautifully, but I have hit a snag with it:  If I open its raw files using ACR (for later edition either in Lightroom or Photoshop) even though they contain a staggering amount of detail, they somehow fail to live up to the expectations a full-frame 36MP camera generates regarding image sharpness.
To further illustrate:  I also own a Fuji XE-2, which has an APS 16MP sensor, which, however, offers stunning, razor-sharp images almost every time I press the shutter.  Opening these files in ACR is a delight and you have to edit them much less than the D800 files to get the image you had previously visualized.
However, if I open the NEF files using Nikon's own Capture NX-D software, voilà!  The images look as sharp as they should have from the start in ACR. But, if I export the resulting edit, via TIFF, either to Lightroom or Photoshop, again you feel disappointed, they are too soft:  I did not pay a hefty chunk of my cash for the camera and lenses to get soft pictures.
The gist of the problem here is that Capture NX-D is a fine piece of software but it handles a little stiffly when compared to ACR and introducing it in my workflow would slow things down.
Does anyone have an idea how to overcome this problem to get sharp images from NEF files in ACR?

Nikon has a raw conversion software in their camera and computer-based applications which consists of algorithms and parameters that guide the application of the algorithms to render a JPG.
Adobe has a raw conversion software which consists of algorithms and parameters that guide the application of the algorithms to render the raw data as an RGB image that you see, and eventually save as some file format.
The raw conversion algorithms are proprietary within each company and Nikon parameters that may be embedded in the NEF file are only relevant to Nikon software.  Let’s say the sharpening parameters in the NEF file are +3.  What does that mean to Adobe which has an Amount slider of 0 to 150?  So Adobe ignores the Nikon-specific sharpness parameters.  Until Adobe and Nikon are the same company (as well as Canon and Sony and Panasonic and Olympus and Leica, etc) Adobe will have different algorithms and parameters to guide the raw conversion than the camera manufacturers.  Some day we may live in a society where the state provides all photography hardware and software and everything is the same, but until then, there is competition between various companies and intellectual property rights and patent laws that keep each from knowing exactly what the other is doing.
Adobe converts raw files from many models and brands of cameras.  For the most part they use the same algorithms and parameters for each of these models and brands.
Suppose you work for a photography company with many photographers where some use Nikon and some use Canon and some use Sony, etc, and it is your job to work on each of those raw files.  If Adobe had one set of sliders for Nikon files and another set for Canon files and another set for Sony files, in other words if Adobe tried to do the things as specific to the camera manufacturer as possible, then it would be difficult to work on the raw files across the various camera manufacturers.  If you use Adobe software it shouldn’t matter what brand or model of camera you’re working with, the workflow should be similar and the results similar to the extent the raw data, itself, is similar.

  • Bridge Issue:  CS6 Unresponsive, how to make it respond?

2 second lag after clicking on any menu item.
4-8 second lag after right clicking on any image.
3 second lag while selecting images with arrow keys.
2 second lag selecting multiple images
    My system is high performance:
    . 12 Core 3.3Ghz Xeon Processors
    . 24GB RAM
. Primary drive is 8 SSDs in a RAID0 configuration
    . Dual nVidia Quadro FX5400
    . OS: Win7 x64
CS5 and CS5.5 were very “snappy” in responsiveness on this system.  CS6 Bridge works fine on my laptop, perfectly responsive.
Once Camera RAW or Photoshop are open, no issue working in these tools, so, the issue is bridge.
Here’s my debugging steps which have not worked to fix the issue:
Installed the latest camera RAW plug in from Nikon.  Nikon D800 RAW .NEF files work in windows explorer and in CS5.5.
    Installed all windows updates
Installed the lastest nvidia FX5800 card drivers
Uninstalled all Adobe products (reader, media player, etc.)
Uninstalled all plugs ins (HDR, noise, etc.)
Checked there are no fonts on the system (no TTF files)
Uninstalled Office 2013 to make sure there were no system font issues.
Uninstalled all Nikon software except the RAW plug in.
    Deleted C:\Program Files\Adobe and C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe
Searched for any Adobe reference in c:\Users\<my_username>\ (example AppData), and deleted it.
Cleaned the registry of any reference to Adobe or any dll related to Adobe or an Adobe plug in.
    Rebooted multiple times.
Re-installed CS6 Master Collection.  At this point it did not recognize my raw photos (.NEF from a Nikon D800).
    Installed all Adobe Updates.
The updates fixed the camera raw issue
Ran FontTest.jsx – all fonts passed, none failed.
    Tried Preferences:
Advanced -> Use Software Rendering : CPU utilization went up, but, no impact on the lag
Startup Scripts : Disabled all but Photoshop CS6
Increased Cache Size, Compacted Cache, Purged Cache, Different Cache organizations, etc.
Does anyone know how to fix this

I talked to support on Thursday and was told that someone would call within 3 days.
Of course no-one did. Adobe have gotten too big and when that happens support becomes bad, very bad.
The last problem I had with bridge was all the 'file type associations' were lost. I thought being a paying customer I will call on their help. Again Crap support, kept telling me the same thing set each one up individually. In the end I found a registry hack that sorted the problem out.
I’m all up for being legal and pay a lot of money on software making sure I am but I do understand that when a large company offers such bad support why people start thinking why pay.
Surely part of the Cloud subscription I pay should enable me to get support others who use the software illegally don’t get. Of course in reality I don’t. I don’t get any useful support.
I have to repeat myself for every department, wait around for calls that never come and hunt the forums for people who seem to do better jobs in informing others of how to solve problems.
I will keep updated on the problem as I know more. I will also like anyone else who is having to problem to message here.

  • Unable to load .jpeg or NEF files from Nikon D800 to Lightroom 4.2

Just purchased a Nikon D800. Upgraded my Lightroom 3 to 4.2. • Is it possible for one camera to work and one not in lightroom and be a lightroom issue? Nikon says

My son and I purchased Nikon D7100s.  Mine works fine.  He was having trouble getting his raw files into lightroom 4.4.  He came over to my house and used my computer still having the same issues.  He can read the raw fine in ViewNX2 but not in his lightroom, my lightroom or elements 11.  Nikon says it is an issue with Adobe...Is this possible?  He is probably going to return the camera...

    Strange coincidence:
Earlier this evening I was on the Exiftool homepage to download a new version. And I noticed a repair tool I had never seen before and have no use for since I don't own a Nikon camera. And then I came here and saw your thread...
You may want to try the tool here:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
Phil Harvey only writes that it repairs file from D4, D600, D800, D800E and D3200. But it is worth trying anyway, I think. If it doesn't work, contact him. He often implements changes very fast.
Your son may also want to consider if he should continue using Nikon software to download the photos from the camera. This excerpt from the above mentioned link doesn't sound very reassuring:
[Note that Nikon doesn't learn from their mistakes, and a similar problem happened 2 years ago with an older version of Nikon Transfer and the D5000 -- read here. The moral is: Don't use Nikon Transfer or any other utility that modifies the file to download your precious images!]

  • D800 RAW files will not open in Photoshop CS6

I have just installed the CS6 upgrade to Photoshop CS4 Extended, but now the software will not read the RAW files from my D800.
I have followed Adobe's instructions to check that I have the correct RAW plug-in (7.0.0.308) which I have.  I have uninstalled the software and reinstalled the software without success.  I do not want to convert my RAW files into DNG files, so I have ignored that step.
The 'Open in Photoshop' instruction in Lightroom 4 does not open my D800 RAW files either, although the files can be opened in Lightroom 4 OK.
Any idea what the problem is?

Brilliant!  ACR 7.1 Beta allows D800 RAW files to be opened within CS6 and it also allows Photoshop 4 to open D800 RAW files in Photoshop CS6.
It says that the Beta version will expire on 30/6/2012 after which it will keep advising on a daily basis although it will still work.  Any idea, what happens next?   Does Adobe issue a proper ACR 7.1 and distribute it as part of the update service?

I seem to remember seeing an article that stated i would have to uninstall and re-install CS6 Photoshop completely and re-install again. However I cannot find this article now.
