D800 Timelapse Problem in Aperture

I just shot my first in camera timelapses using a D800.  I imported them into Aperture 3.4.3 and everything was fine.  I even exported one with no problems.
Then I backuped to my vault, and when it was finished, all my timelapses and a ver of the videos (but not all of them) shot tonight had shrunk!  Now they're only 84x47 pixels!
I tried closing and opening Aperture, zooming and unzooming, full screen... nothing.  Has anyone else had this problem?

How did you import, NEil? Referenced or managed? Are your most recently imported images still connected to the original master files, or are the masters marked as offline?

  • Problem Using Aperture as an External Editor

I'm having a problem using Aperture as an external editor for iPhoto. I've set preferences to "Edit in Aperture" and selected the Aperture application. When I click edit a photo in iPhoto, Aperture fires up as expected, but it does not load my photo. Nothing seems to be exported from iPhoto into Aperture.
I can export the same photo to my desktop and then load it into Aperture fine.
When I set preferences to edit in CS2, this works fine, only Aperture seems to be the problem.
    What am I doing wrong?
    I'm using the following versions:
    - iPhoto 7.0.2
    - Aperture 1.5.4

If you have Photoshop CS2 then you'd have a better editor using it within iPhoto as follows:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Green Box Problem in Aperture

    Hey All,
I've been having a problem in Aperture 2.1.4. Every now and again, I get an ugly green box instead of my image. It can happen when I zoom in, when I crop, when I zoom out, or just about any time I am changing the view of the image. I'm on a 20" iMac (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with 3 GB of RAM and am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2.
I took the machine into an Apple store and they ran extensive tests on the video card and other hardware and everything checked out. Any idea on what's going on? It looks like this:

Do as the above poster said (terence devlin) and submit a bug report to Apple. You can do it from within the program via the Aperture or File menu (forgot which at the moment).
The short answer to your assumption is that yes SL does break the use of Aperture for some. (I am one of them). It is not necessarily the Aperture program update (2.1.4) itself as I have reinstalled Aperture on Leopard with all updates (10.5.8 and 2.1.4) and have had no issues.
As far as I can tell, the problem lies in the card drivers, Snow Leopard Code and Aperture programming code regarding OpenGL and/or CoreGraphics.
To answer your anticipated question about my trouble shooting:
I have done (in no particular order) the font, plist, permissions, new user account, new library, rebuild library, vacuum library, visual inspection of the motherboard (internal) capacitors, voltage/current checks on power supply, new ram, new HD...it became a quest as you can see.... I changed system settings, tried hidden parameter settings, ran developer toolkit utilities to search for error messages and odd behavior. I ran console and watched each line by line message as I performed each Aperture adjustment/task (or at least tried to...)
Finally I reinstalled both Operating Systems (Leopard and Snow Leopard) separately on new drives AND installed Aperture 2.1.4 with a 150GB 30,000 image library on each drive separately. No peripherals, clean systems. No haxies (I do not use them) Nothing but the OS and Aperture and the same library. Aperture performed flawlessly on an external bootable drive in Leopard but not in Snow Leopard..in fact it performed worse and I had the corruption duly noted above and elsewhere.
In my opinion, Apple should be shamed for being so tight lipped about this. It is a serious flaw that should be acknowledged to users. But to admit this without a patch or software solution in the works is an unspoken implication to have customers purchase new computers for a fix.
Anyone notice the released updates for Logic Pro (2 since the release of SL) and Mainstage (also 2 since the release of SL) and Remote Desktop (also 2 since release of SL).....you get the idea? Aperture? Zilch.

  • Problems using Aperture

    Hello,
I have a MacBookPro and use Aperture on it. Have been using this for 6 months quite happily.
Recently I purchased a 27" Thunderbolt display and have noticed a problem with Aperture.
When I'm trying to look at an image (any image, I have 100s) using the viewer, the image is blank. (Using the loupe shows the louped part of the image correctly and the browser function works correctly as well). Looking at the screen on the MacBookPro at the same time is the same.
If I disconnect the Thunderbolt display, the image is displayed as normal.
I can recreate this at will - plug it in, no image in viewer. Unplug it, image in viewer.
This fault does not occur when the laptop is on it's own, when a different external monitor is connected, on any other picture imaging software (that I have!), or on any other video application.
All updates have been applied. Restarts have happened many times!
Basically, it's all perfect, apart from trying to view an image, in Aperture, when the thunderbolt display is connected.
    Would appreciate any pointers
    Thanks

Did you try the second screen options as shown here?

  • IPad photo syncinc problem from Aperture

    Hi,
I have a weird photo sync problem (Itunes 10.0.1, Aperture 3.0.3). Sometimes when I add a project to Aperture and an album under that project, I can't sync that to my ipad as Itunes doesn't see any pictures in the album.
My Aperture library is huge so I'm not syncinc all of it, just selected photos. When I open iTunes, plug iPad in and go to iPad photos page, the project and the album appear in the list but if I check either one of those, the number on the right showing the number of photos in the album/project, is zero and nothing gets synced.
Sometimes I've been able to fix this by restarting aperture and itunes. I've tried reprocessing previews (previews are 2560x2560) but it doesn't seem to help anymore.
I've sort of localised the problem to Aperture. When I quit aperture, an information window "updating information for sharing previews" and a progress bar apperars. If this takes only a couple of seconds, then iTunes doesn't seem to detect any changes I've made. Sometimes it takes from 30 seconds to a minute and usually after that everything works.
I tried to google this and others seem to have had similar problems but I didn't find a solution. Is there one?

  • Problem syncing Aperture to iPad

Has anyone else had a problem syncing Aperture to the iPad after upgrading to Mountain Lion?  I have attempted to sync selected albums from Aperture, but no new images were transferred.
    Thanks -
    Dudley

I agree, it appears to be screwed up. I've only been able to do limited tests, but it appears you CANNOT choose "Selected Albums, ...." WITHOUT specifying something other than 'no Events'. In other words, you can't simply select an album or smart collection, you MUST choose an event. And I've found even if I choose 'all events', I only get a small subset of the photos in the library included as part of the sync. What's an event, anyway? It's not part of Aperture's nomenclature.
This whole process looks pretty stupid to me, and I don't have time to spend with it right now. In the limited syncing I've done, I've always used the other way, i.e., NOT Aperture. Unless I'm totally missing the boat here, looks like I will have to continue doing that.

  • Some problems with aperture 3

I have some problems with aperture 3...
    //1
I updated my library with aperture 3, and export some projects for make another one, everything works fine, I can switch the library very quickly...but when I want change my background in snow leopard, the first library ( current default ) don´t show anything, seems like don´t load well, the "aperture" shows right but without arrow for open the hierarchy, and if I switch the library ( the second one ) the background can load this library without problems, works with all folders, projects...
I repaired the permissions, database and rebuild database but nothing happens.
    //2
The second problem I think is the same. In Mail, iWork, iLife...the Media Browser don´t load my main library, only the second one, I have the last update installed, and the second library works fine, why not the first?
    //3
I imported some projects from the one library to the other, for adjust my pipeline and make much easy my workflow, but if I import, for example, 2 folders with 4 projects, aperture import in my library 4 folders and 8 projects, the imported files are duplicated O_O
I see the same stuff inside the folders, and when I delete one of them, the aperture delete the 2 "versions", but in the trash I see only one of them xD and if I put back the folder/project, again I see 2 versions xD
I "fixed" creating new folders/projects and moving the photos manually...( with some crush in the process ) any idea about this problem?

This problem is more as a enhancement...what happen if I want to sync different projects from my 2 libraries in my iPhone?? because iTunes only show me the last loaded library

  • Problem with Aperture 3.6 Can't open Preferences

I had a problem with Aperture 3.6; opened a new Library from the Vault, now cannot open Aperture Preferences. When I attempt to open preferences I get a very thin vertical line about 1 ½ inches long?? Any fixes for this/  Thanks, Vic

Try to delete the Aperture preferences as described here at this link:
Get help with Aperture 3 - Apple Support
    Steps to reset preference settings
To reset your Aperture user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
    Quit Aperture.
In the Finder choose "Go to folder" from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field. Press the Go button.
Remove the "com.apple.Aperture.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Restart your computer if you're using OS X Mavericks.
The locations of your Aperture libraries are stored in the preference file listed above. If you have stored your library outside the default location of  ~/Pictures/Aperture Library, make a note of where the library is before deleting the Aperture preferences file. If you have more than one library, you can bring up a dialog to choose which one to load by pressing Option immediately after you open Aperture.

  • Nikon D800 Multiple Exposure problem in Aperture

When I shoot multiple exposures with the new Nikon D800, import into Aperture (latest greatest version with all updates up-to-date) the image imported looks NOTHING like what was on the saved/merged image in-camera and appears red-red-red. Shot a bunch last night had issue with every one. Think there might be an overlooked glitch here. Everything else seems to work 100% with D800, but this might be glitch.
So, I wanted to be sure I wasn't seeing things, took the camera to kid's soccer game today to further test, got home and loaded 'em into Aperture, same exact thing. The blown-out ones are the multiple exposures (look perfect in-camera) and as you can see the following photo is as it was shot (non-red ones to the right of the selected 5 that are blow-out examples.)

I don't think it's magic dust and it's definitely been used for more than 100 years....there aren't Multiple photos, it's 1 photo exposed multiple times with and end net of 1 photo. This is NOT like HDR where you have multiple photos at different EV and merge, this is 1 photo and shutter actuated on SAME photo multiple times. In other words, there is no "series" of photos to look at....1 photo. Cannot understand why Aperture is having stuch a problem with this when it didn't have the problem with D700 files.

  • Problem using Aperture as external editor for Photoshop CS5...

I am having trouble using Aperture as my external editor for Photoshop - if, for example, I select twenty photos and choose "edit in photoshop CS5," for some reason or another, only ten or twelve photos will show up. Some photos are always missing, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Has anyone else noticed this? It is really frustrating and slowing my workflow down immensely. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Casey.
First lets make sure we have the flow going the correct way.  You are using Aperture, and use PSCS5 as your external editor (external to Aperture).  Right?
Second, what size are your Masters?  When you use PS directly (not calling it from Aperture) do you regularly open twenty files at a time?
My Masters are about 25 MPix each.  PS sizes them in the 140 MB range.  Opening twenty of them at once -- for me that's about 3 GB of data -- will probably bog things down.  Does the problem occur if you open just, say, five at a time?  What's your hardware?  How do you have PS set-up?
And -- my top suggestion for improving your work rate: do in Aperture as much of the work as you can, and send out to PS as little as possible.  You don't say what kind of work you are doing, but Aperture, for many, suffices for almost all of there photograph processing needs.

  • Problem opening Aperture in Mountain Lion

I'm running Aperture 3.3.2 and upgraded to Mountain Lion last night. Since the upgrade Aperture is hanging on the "Opening Aperture Library" window. I've repaired and rebuilt my library with all referenced files on externals attached. No help. I've also deletedt the "ProAppsSystemID" file and reentered my registration numbers and still had no success.
Oddly with the "Opening" window open Aperture's toolbar funcuions normally as if the program were open.
I have figured out a work around. I made a new, empty library. I can open Option-click and open Aperture and select that empty library. From that empty library I can then switch to my normal library and use it as normal. Upon closing Aperture however things go back to being locked up when I try to open it.
Anyone else seen this problem? I'm open for suggestions. Thanks.

Don't do that;  files in Time Machine backups are protected, and should not (usually cannot) be used directly with applications.   The should be restored somewhere to be used.
Use the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display) instead.

  • Problem with Aperture slideshow export - Some photos don't display!

I have just completed my latest wedding slideshow. It plays as normal in Aperture, but when exported, certain photos don't show... just a black screen. The timings are unaffected.  Aperture 3.6, Yosemite 10.10.1
The affected photos seem to be the ones that I am displaying for longer durations. I'm using Ken Burn's theme and if I turn off the Ken Burn's effect on the affected photo it gets exported ok.
Having spent many hours working on this slideshow I'm "slightly" annoyed!  This is obviously a bug introduced in Aperture 3.6 or Quicktime on Yosemite, I just hope it can be fixed ASAP.   Unfortunately, I guess Aperture is low on the priority list... I have moved the LR, but still rely on Aperture for slideshows!
    HELP!

Luckily I still had a bootable pre-Yosemite backup of my iMac and have been able to successfully export the slideshow.  Hopefully, Apple will fix the problem before next wedding season!

  • Strange problem with Aperture 3

OK folks, this new version of Aperture is ... crippy!
I was browsing through a project I have (I had it from my Aperture 2 library, in case this is important) and a strange thing happened. I have two versions from the same master (a referenced master), which show in the film strip viewer (so I assume the preview is there), but it does NOT show in the viewer window (the top one), nor does it show when I go to full page.
What is strange is that in full page mode, if I select the loupe and move it around, the large circle of the loupe shows me the part of the image I move over. Also, if I zoom in, the zoomed part of the image shows fine, but when I cancel the zoom, the image disappears again.
This is the second time this happened to me, and in both cases, before the problem occured, the viewer got messed, as I was moving from one image to the next.
Even if I try to create a new version from the master, the new version has the same problem.
    Any ideas?

No, there is not.  The times stamp for a file in the Finder is not that of the camera time stamp, even in the Aperture Library in the folder of Masters.  That time stamp will be the date it was imported into Aperture, and not the camera's date taken.
What you are seeing is the way files work in OSX, and nothing to do with the photo timestamp in the EXIF, including that found with More Info.  The other info, such as pixel dimension is common to both paths of getting info.
Btw, an Export from iPhoto results in the same behavior.
