What is different is that ACR 8.5 includes a slight functional improvement of being able to edit spotting tool areas that LR doesn't have or at least not documented to have, though I'm not convinced this isn't due to enhancement schedules slipping due to the LR team having too much on their plate and an Cloud announcement event that was scheduled months in advance so couldn't slip, though it could be that we're seeing functional improvements in CC 2014's ACR that we'll have to wait for LR6 for.
ACR in CS6 is done in terms of any new functionality, how long camera support continues is questionable. PS CC 2014 continue to get new features. So this alone is a new behavior. While ACR and the DNG converter have and I suspect will continue to be released at the same time, that's not necessarily going to happen with LR which is kind of an odd beast now that we have both CC subscription and perpetual licensing. Currently, ACR has features that LR doesn't. More improvements for ACR are coming and whether they will be released before or at the same time as LR is unknown outside Adobe. Pretty darn sure you will not see functionality in ACR that LR also shares coming out after an LR release but anything is possible. To sweeten subscription, it seems illogical for LR to have a newer feature prior to ACR release. But again, this is all new territory.
Getting back OT, the release of ACR and LR that can support the new Nikon will happen, but when? Could be weeks, could be months. Until then, the OP has no options other than using the Nikon raw converter (or shooting JPEG which as I pointed out is never an issue like these damn proprietary raw files).

  • Sony RX1R not recognized by lightroom 5.3. What should I do?

My Sony RX1R is not recognized by lightroom 5.3. In the import window it appears a "no name", and the images on the cam are not recognized. What should I do?

The Sony RX1R was supported beginning with LR 5.0 so LR 5.3 should be ok: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Try taking the card out of your camera and put it in a card reader and then see what happens.  If you are already doing this, then try copying the images from the card to your hard-drive using an OS-level function like Windows Explorer or Finder and then import from the HD.
It is possible that there is a Sony driver interfering with the transfer of images directly from the camera to the computer via LR.  It is also possible that the images are not being correctly stored on the memory card in the first place so are corrupted before LR touches them—this could be something wrong with the camera or the card.

  • NIKON D800E files not recognized in lightroom 4.4

my lightroom 4 is up to date (waiting for lightroom 5 to be given to me - apparently they are having ordering issues so may take 24 hrs and i need to finish this project NOW)
why does it not recognize NIKON D800E files? is there a way around this or do i have to wait for my lightroom 5 to be delivered?
getting a message saying 'The files are not recognized by the raw format support in lightroom. (517)'
    thanks!

That makes sense, especially if the NEFs are also not readable in LR5.
To correct any corruption from using obsolete Nikon software on newer camera NEFs, you can use the utility, here:

  • My new Canon 16-35 mm f4 is not recognized by Lightroom 5.6

I used the new lens and I am experiencing the same problem as someone else on this forum posted last month.  The lens is not being recognized by Lightroom 5.6 and the distortion is severe... very severe.
Can someone assist me with resolving this problem.
    Thank you.

There is a bug in the lens profile that Adobe will fix in a future version that will allow it to be automatically selected when the Lens Setup is set to Auto.
You can, however, make it automatically selected with the Lens Corrections Profile Setup set to Default by selecting up a new photo with that lens, choosing the right lens profile so Setup will say Custom, then clicking on Setup, again, and choosing Save New Lens Profile Defaults.  Now whenever Default is selected LR will automatically select your new lens profile defaults, and for other lenses it’ll still do Auto.
What you’ll want to do after saving the new defaults is set LR to use Default as the default value for Setup instead of Auto.  TO do this load up a completely new photo with new adjustments, it doesn’t matter what lens, then choose Default for the Lens Corrections Setup value, and press the Alt key and choose Set Default… and Update to Current Settings. From now on, for that camera, LR will have Default for Setup instead of Auto and it’ll pick your custom profile for this particular lens.

  • Font not recognized in LightRoom

    Hello all--
I have loaded a font onto my OS and although Word (etc) recognizes the font, LightRoom does not. Has anyone else come across this issue? Help!
    Thanks!

Not all fonts are recognized by Lightroom.  Try a different font.

  • Changes in xmp files not recognized n Lightroom

In my workflow i have setup for changes to be made to the xmp files by a program other than lightroom. In the previous version of Lightroom i had tested this, it worked fine. When i made a change to the xmp file, Lightroom recognized the change and displayed/rendered the image appropriately. Now, I am using version 2.2 and this is not happening. I see the option in th Metadat dropdown menu for "Read Metadata from File". If i click this it works. Is there an option for this to automatically happen that i am missing? If there isnt, why not? Also, I have noticed that Lightroom does not automatically write/update the xmp file if that option is enabled when using the develop module. Can anyone help me with this?

Read has never been automatic, and write is automatic but not instantly - it does it when time is available. You can use synchronize instead of read if you want to, but again, it's not automatic.

  • Scanner NEF not Supported by Lightroom 2?

I am trying to decide on some workflow options for scanning negatives with a Nikon scanner.  It has been suggested that raw image data from a Nikon scanner can best be processed by having the scanner output in NEF format and using Nikon Capture NX 2 as a raw editor. The basis for this suggestion is that ACR does not support scanner NEF.  Apparently, neither does Lightroom 2, or so I am told.  Having reviewed comments in Adobe forums, some seem to hold the opinion, often vociferously, that scanner NEF is not truly raw data, is a complete waste of time, and scanned images should be output as TIFFs rather than NEFs.  Also, despite the official line that scanner NEF is not supported, scanned images that were output as NEF, and saved as NEF images, seem to be working just fine in Lightroom 2, although I haven't tried a full processing workflow on them yet. (In the interests of full disclosure I hold out the possibility that I may have somehow converted these images into a conventional form of NEF at some point after scanning).
I apologize for that lengthy introduction.  Here are my questions:  (1)  How is scanner NEF different from "true" raw image data; (2)  what are the consequences for optimization of scanned NEF images in Lightroom 2 -- am I simply using Lightroom tools without getting the full benefit of processing "true" raw information, as in the case of TIFFs and JPEGs;  (3) what does it mean that Lighroom 2 and ACR do not support scanner NEF anyway since I am (apparently) able to open and process them in Lightroom 2;  (4) if  Lightroom 2 does not fully support scanner NEF, is there anything to be gained by outputting to NEF (rather than TIFF) and using Nikon's proprietary RAW editor (which I am told does not officially support scanner NEF either, but still works) instead of LIghtroom 2 for NEFs?

Short answer - scan the images as TIFF and make life easier for yourself.
    Longer answer:
    1. A true raw file is still in it's mosaiced form whereas a scanner NEF is a fully rendered TIFF with a different extension
    2. Same as editing a TIFF, PSD or JPEG. The adjustments are parametric and therefore only readable in Lightroom and ACR. In order that you can actually open them into Photoshop or another editor it will be necessary to export the files as TIFF, PSD or JPEG.
    3. It means that they aren't treated as true raw files. Refer to above.
    4. There is nothing to be gained.

  • Replacing .xmp sidecar files not recognized in Lightroom 3.6- Lr 'Guru' Question Alert!

    - I have 'Automatically write changes ino XMP' checked
    - I have not moved my catalog or files for years and only continue to add files to my catalog.
    ISSUE:
I made some accidental global changes to about 600 .cr2 raw images and to save me time in recovering from each change I made, I closed Lightroom and then deleted the sidecar .xmp files in the folder.  I then copied the .xmp files from a backup created and then launched Lightroom again- there was no indication that the metadata had been changed and thought that was odd.  I right-clicked on the folder and  slected 'Synchronize Folder' and the only option was 'scan for metadata updates' so I tried to synchronize from there- still no changes made to the image previews.  The Metadata -> Sync Metadata option was grayed-out so that wasn't an option either.
What I finally had to do was highlight all the files in the Library module and select Photo -> Read Metadata From Files and ONLY after that did the previews update and read from the newly imported .xmp files.
So, my question is WHY did Lightroom not see that the .xmp files were changed as I have experienced in the past?

I would have done Read Metadata from Files as my first choice.
From what you say, the LR metadata data was newer than the XMP metadata date and LR’s metadata updated date was newer than the XMP file-modification date so why would LR overwrite its newer metadata with older XMP metadata with a Synchronize?  It might have worked the way you wanted if you had changed the file-modification date to be something current, by using a “touch” command or editing the contents of the XMP files, but LR seems to have done the right thing by not updating its internal metadata from and older XMP file using Synchronize and requiring an explicit command to do so.
It used to be impossible to update XMP files to the current set of edits if LR thought the metadata was current even if you explicitly commanded it to Write Metadata to Files, so Adobe has made adjustments to how LR and sidecars work together.
If LR used to revert edits based on older XMP sidecar files, that sounds wrong, and probably Adobe has fixed things to work in a more safe manner.
Do you remember if you saw an ! on the thumbnails indicating a metadata conflict or was LR completely unaware that the XMP files had been reverted to an earlier copy?

  • Canon 7d mark ii gps data not recognized in lightroom 5.7

How do I get lightroom to find and use my gps meta data from my new Canon 7d mark ii. I can see that there is a file generated on the card but it isn't in my meta data when downloaded on to Lightroom. I am using a MAC user. When using my old Pentax system with geo tagging to came across automatically in older versions of Lightroom so I know it should be seamless.

Once the GPS indicator is solid the camera should be embedded the GPS data in the photos.  There is no need to offload the GPX track log and have LR use that.  If that's what you're doing, maybe LR does have a problem reading the Canon 7D Mark II GPX log file, but there's no need, just let LR import the photos with the coordinates stored in the photo files.
Otherwise, are you using some software (including LR) to transfer the photos from the camera or card, that could be stripping out the GPS data?  I use Windows Explorer (like Mac Finder) to copy my photos so nothing is stripping anything out of them.
Have you examined the photos with any other software to see if there are coordinates?  On Windows I'd use GeoSetter.  I don't know what the Mac has.
If you want someone to test, can you upload a raw file that was shot when the GPS indicator was on but not blinking, directly from the card to somewhere like http://www.dropbox.com/ and post a public download/share link to it, here?

  • Nikon D40x raw files not recognized by Lightroom.

Any updates available for the Nikon D40x ?

It has only been supported since Camera RAW 4.1, so will probably come in the 1.1 update.
You can check the list of ACR and Lightroom supported cameras at:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
You can use the Adobe DNG Converter to convert your D40x files to DNG and they will be readable by Lightroom 1.0 and earlier versions of ACR.

I cannot import NEF images created by my Nikon 3100. The file format is not recognized by Lightroom. I have installed the latest PS update for Camera Raw. PS does not recognize the file either. Is an update for both Lightroom and PS coming for the new Nikon cameras?

Yes. It should appear about 2 months from now if Adobe keeps to its usual 3 month schedule.

  • I need help! when I am importing my NEF files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support"

I need help! when I am importing my NEF Raw files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support". The whole purpose of that button is so that the file can be recognized... How can I make the "copy as DNG" button work as it is supposed too?? Thank you

Thank you for responding. So I essentially will never be able to use that button in lightroom 5? do I need to get LR 6? Will there ever be an update for LR 5 that will enable me to use it?
Does DNG Converter work within LR or do I have to upload pictures to my computer and then make a second copy in DNG format. and then go into LR and use them?

  • Raw files from the new Nikon D810 will not open with either Photoshop CS5.1 or Lightroom 4.  When will a real Adobe solution be available to work with Raw (NEF) files in their native format, using CS5.1 and LR4?

Raw files from the new Nikon D810 will not open with either Photoshop CS5.1 or Lightroom 4.  When will a real Adobe solution be available to work with Raw (NEF) files in their native format, using CS5.1 and LR4?

Clarification: this is a user forum; you are not addressing Adobe here.
The answer to your question as phrased is: never.
CS5 is history and it is not longer supported.  There will not be any updates or bug fixes for CS5.
You need to convert the raw NEF files from your D810 to raw DNGs using the free, standalone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 RC (beta), the first version ever to support that camera..

  • Nikon D810 .NEF (small) files converted by DNG Comverter 8.6 is not recognised by Lightroom 5.5 or CameraRaw 8.6

D810 NEF (small) files converted by DNG Comverter 8.6 is not recognised by Lightroom 5.5 or CameraRaw 8.6. The normal NEF files are visible after conversion. Is there a way out to get the converted DNGs read in LR or ACR?

No there is not, but as of yesterday, Adobe knows that the 9MP small-raw files don’t work and will likely fix in the final release.  Until then you need to shoot full-res 36MP images.

  • Just purchased Nikon D610. tried to import 3 images and got this message: The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. How do I fix this frustrating problem. Have been using Lightroom for years also Nikon products without any prior

How do I import images. Have a message that says: The files are not recognized by the raw format suppot in Lightroom. Am using a Mac version 10.9.4. the import is from a new Nikon D610. Am using LR 4.4 Please help Adobe is useless as a support.

Each camera must be supported explicity and your LR version is years older than your camera.
According to Adobe's Camera-support page, you need at least LR 5.3 to work with your D610 NEFs in LR:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
If you don't want to upgrade to LR 5, or can't due to your OS being too old, then it might work to use the latest DNG Converter and create DNGs from your NEFs, which should open in LR 4.x.  You can find the DNG Converter here:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates
