D90 NEFs really dark in Lightroom

Using MacBook Pro. Lightroom 2.3. D90 NEF's are really dark when I open them in Lightroom. Compared to NX2. I have to boost exposure quite a bit to get them even close. Using Camera Calibration doesn't help. Any help would be appreciated.

Follow up remark...What this person describes below is exactly what I'm experiencing.....
....I'm a bit of a newbie in the world of dSLR photography (1.5 months), and I just wanted to pose a question because it's been bugging me ever since I got the camera.
So I've basically been using Lightroom to import my RAW files and do my PP. I had tried NX2 but I didn't like it that much. I loved the interface of Lightroom. However, the problem is that it "tweaks" the file after I import it. For a couple of seconds, it displays an embedded JPEG preview that looks so much better than the "tweaked" version that Adobe has after it reads the file.
I was wondering if there was a preset I can apply to the file in order to make it look as close to the "camera" version as possible.
Let me know if I'm a bit too confusing because I'm not sure if I'm using the correct terminology for this.

  • D90 NEF (RAW) files not supported in Preview in Leopard 10.5.5

Nikon D90 NEF (RAW) files are not displaying in Finder. There is an updater for iPhoto 08 and Aperture 2 that supports these files: Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.3, but it won't install if you don't have these applications.
Anyway to install the update so that it works for Leopard?
My workflow is Finder/Automator/Preview/Lightroom, so Preview support is important to me - it seems strange that the updater doesn't install it.

    Hi Gordon Waddell;
So you want a patch for iPhoto 06 that does the same as the patch for iPhoto 08. IMHO you should hold your breath for it because I don't see much chance of that happening.
I suggest you upgrade your iPhoto or get Aperture.

  • Hello,  RAW snaps too dark in Lightroom.

    Hello,
I made a snap with D-Lichting automatic in JPG and in RAW format at the same time.
When I look to the snaps in Photoshop I remark a difference in histogram. Both snaps have the same wave length, not the same frequencies. The red and blue colors’ are a higher in RAW; the green colour is higher in  JPG!
Both pictures look to be the same, lighting seems to be ok.
The same RAW picture opened in Lightroom is dark, under-exposed you should think.
Could I get some advice to get solved this problem?
    Many thanks in advance
    Marianne

    Dear Rob,
ADL is off and I made again some snaps. RAW ( NEF) and JPEG are taken at the SAME time.
When I have a look tot snaps in Lightroom they look ok. When I have imported them in Lightroom they are still too dark = over exposed. What could be happen?
    vriendelijke groet!

  • When I connect my MBP to another screen, all fonts turn dark and my VLC screen is really dark!

    Hey.
    Hope anybody can help me.
I have a Macbook Pro with Lion installed.
But... When I connect my MBP to my Samsung 32" screen.
    * My fonts (Only on my Samsung, not on my MBP screen) turn dark, from a light greey to a really dark greey.
      * When my VLC screen is on my MBP its normal, but when I put it on my other screen then it becomes really dark so its impossile to see whats on the screen.
Its the same on every screen i have tried (an LG aswell).
I have had this a couple of weeks now, ever since I borrowed a HDMI adapter from a friend and connected it with my MBP.
Its really becoming a problem. Since I can't watch anything on my screen anymore.
    Does anybody have a solution?

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

Hey! So i'm having some problems with creating images in photoshop and then exporting them into windows. So when I have an image in Photoshop, it's normal colour, but wen when I save it into windows it shows up as really dark and you can't see any details at all. I'm using the Photoshop CC 2014 version and running Windows 8.1. Anyone know how to fix this problem so the images show up normal colour in windows? Here is an example of what I mean

  • REALLY Dark prints on HP B9180

Whenever I print an image from Aperture to my HP Photosmart Pro B9180 the image appears really really dark. Even turning the exposure up (so the image is pretty much all white) results in a black print. Currently, when I print an image I need to export a jpg to my desktop, open it in Photoshop CS3, and print from that. Anyone know how I can fix this?

I still don't understand why Apple can't allow this in the Aperture print dialogue box - all it would need is like in Photoshop - an option to allow the printer to manage the colour.
Technically, PostScript does not support the ICC file format. PostScript has its own file format for colour matching, Color Space Arrays for device to CIE and Color Rendering Dictionaries for CIE to device.
Therefore, Apple ColorSync has the ability to do one of two things,
    - keep the ICC file format for the colour matching tables and convert the colourants in the operating system, or
    - convert the ICC file format for the colour matching into the PostScript file format and convert the colourants in the computer that runs the PostScript interpreter.
These commands are part of Apple ColorSync. They appear in the system as part of the printing path, File > Print > from Copies & Pages scroll down to ColorSync > Color Conversion: Standard (meaning in the system) and In Printer (meaning in the PostScript interpreter.
Adobe Photoshop has similar commands. If you choose PostScript Color Management, you are converting the ICC file format for colour matching into the PostScript file format for colour matching, and sending the PS file format plus colourants to the RIP for conversion.
The PostScript file format for colour matching was developed for PostScript language level 2, published in December 1990 in PostScript Language Reference Manual, Second Edition, and provided in October 1992 as product to Adobe OEM partners.
In 1991, Microsoft told Seybold Publications that TrueImage would not be compatible with Adobe PostScript language level 2 because PSL2 "does not support the screen." This is correct in the sense that a Color Rendering Dictionary is CIE to device data only.
A Color Rendering Dictiory is not invertible, that is, it does not support CIE to device data and device data to CIE. Therefore, unlike an ICC type PRTR Printer profile a PostScript CRD cannot support simuluation on the screen, cannot be embedded as OutputIntent in PDF/X-3, and so forth.
David Hayward on the ColorSync team described how this is fixed in the ICC architecture in 1995 when the ICC Specification was finalised for release at DRUPA Druck und Papier in Düsseldorf.
"There is much that an application can do with ColorSync that will help the user work with color. For starters, an application could do the following: Include a print preview mode that shows a "soft proof" of the matched output on the display. The application accomplishes this by building a color world with CWConcatColorWorld that matches through three profiles: from the source profile (which is embedded in the document) to the printer's profile (which you allow the user to pick from a list of installed printer profiles) and back to the screen profile (which is the current system profile)."

  • Why is my Canon 600d taking really dark photos?

I'm using a Canon 600d with a EFS 18-55mm lens. I'm in the M setting on the dial with the shutter speed at 1/125 and f/5.6 and the phots are coming out really dark even though the room is bright. Please help?

Actually... I WOULD buy the Bryan Peterson "Understanding Exposure" book... probably one of the most recommended books for those who want to learn to take control of their DSLR and learn to shoot on manual.  The Scott Kelby Digital Photography series of books is also commonly recommended (I think that's up to 4 volumes now) -- but I think the Bryan Peterson book is probably more popular.  These books use common language and wont confuse you with technical terms with a presumption that you know all the terminology... they teach you the terminology, but the books are designed for those just starting out.
The ultimate goal is to understand how to determine when you have the right exposure... if you can shoot in manual you can shoot in any mode.  With that said... I do actually use ALL the modes on my camera -- not just manual.  There are reasons the other modes exist.
As for videos... this one should hopefully be a good primer to understand exposure and how you can trade off one part of the exposure setting, but make up for it by balancing out another part of the exposure setting.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-NhJua5NFA
BTW, you'll learn about "equivalent exposures" -- but they're not really equivalent.  When you trade one setting for another, you get nuances... some exposures are better for freezing action.  Some better for creating selective focus (focus only on your intended subject with everything else deliberately blurred).  Some are better for landscapes where everything is in focus.  Some are better for keeping noise minimized in low light shooting.  Some are better for "blurring" moving parts of the shot to imply motion.  The list goes on and on -- the point is, picking the right exposure combination is a creative process.
I do NOT normally suggest you crank up the ISO as a way to improve the light becasue the camera will increase the amount of "noise" in the image.  The image will start to look grainy.  If you shoot JPEG then the camera will attempt to reduce the noise via software smoothing processes... but this has the side effect of softening the image (focus will not look as sharp.)
This is why it's a good idea to read a good book or watch a few good videos to make sure you understand it.  It's actually not very hard, but may take some practice to get it to really sink in.  I find that even after explaining it to people, they don't "really" get it until they do a few exercises/experiments of their own -- and then the light bulb comes on and you "get it".

  • Y50 - 59421859: Yellows really dark on display.

I just recieved my new y50 today and I'm noticing that the yellows are really dark. It's really noticeable on things like the Google logo, where the yellows appear almost a brown-mustard color. I'm not normally one to nit-pick about small issues, so please understand that this is very, very noticeable. I've searched around for a known history with this, and noticed the Yoga Pro 2 has a very similar issue with yellows. Is there a known fix that is relevant to the Y50? I'm thrilled with the 4K resolution and all the rest of the performance as far as I can tell, but this partciular issue is so bad I'm considering returning it.

With the Y50 UHD and UHD Touch models out in the wild now, almost everyone who cares about screen fidelity has noticed that this laptop suffers from the same problems seen in the Yoga 2 Pro.
The UHD and UHD touch models suffer from yellows looking like mustard-yellows.
An example of what is happening can be seen in the following links.
Here is what yellow should be: http://www.colorcombos.com/images/colors/FFFF00.png
Here is what it looks like on the Y50 (on a good day): http://www.colorcombos.com/images/colors/FFCC00.png
A very similar issue was seen in the Yoga 2 Pro; however, it seems like it was fixed with a BIOS and Energy Management update.
Unfortunately, I don't believe Lenovo knows about this problem quite so much yet. I have called tech support twice and both times they have not heard of such an issue. We need to be vocal about the issue to the the laptop fixed. The Y50 is amazing laptop just totally marred by the color issue
PS: I would like to know if there is BIOS patch update in the works.

  • IPhone screen really dark, unable to us it! Help!

    Hello,
The screen on my iPhone has suddenly gone really dark (it was like that when I switched it on this morning!) - I can not really use it as its almost impossible to see anything, I can only just make out what the different menues are. So the backlight seems to have broken. Any one else who has experienced this? What to do? I have turned it off several times, I have even reset it once and charged it... and obviously checked the light settings.
    Your help is much appreciated!

  • Lightroom 2 colour/darkness vs Lightroom 1

I have just upgraded to lightroom 2 and all images appear too dark, too contrasty and with a slight colour cast. The strange thing is that lightroom 1.4 is still on my machine, and, when looking at the same picture through Lightroom 1.4, the result is fine. Photoshop is also correct.
    So, it can't be hardware.
Perusing the forums indicate that lightroom uses the colour space defined by the monitor driver, while photoshop CS3 bypasses it. This would indicate a problem with the monitor driver if LR 1.4 appeared incorrect. But that is the puzzling thing: LR 1.4 is OK.
    My relevant specs:
    Vista 64-bit, 4Gb RAM
Dual monitors - Samsung Synchmaster 226W and 245B.
    Nvidia 8800 gtx (718 Mb)
    Can anyone suggest anything?

Then why are we back (in LR2) to the pre LR 1.4.1 printer profiles not working correctly when printing in 10.5.x. The workaround of setting the same profile in the Colorsync Utility for the paper selected has to once again be implemented.
    Just someone answer this question.
When I brought this up in the beta forum this is the answer I got. "might I point out it's called BETA for a reason?" Yet this problem was know with 1.3.1 and earlier, corrected in 1.4.1 and now it is back with LR2. And know one has any answers for this?
While not really belonging here what about IDCS3 and the monitor profile being introduced in the RGB Printflow.
If they know what they are doing where are the answers to these problems?

  • ACR 8.5 and Nikon NEF: in Photoshop and Lightroom

Today I was on Nikon presentation. A manager from Russian office sad that Nikon gave Adobe some information how to open NEF files CORRECTLY in ACR, but that algorithms can be used ONLY in Photoshop, not in Lightroom. Is that true or fake? As I know, ACR for Ps and Lr is the same in case color reproduction (and has some differences in image correction).

To compare PS/ACR with LR, if you have both products, you can do an Export a TIF from LR and do a Save Image TIF from ACR, using the same parameters, and then open both in PS and layer one on top of the other, set the blend mode to Difference, merge the layers, and see if you have anything besides 0s for the pixel values of the combined layers.   You could stretch the image in Levels to make finding any non-zero pixels, easier.
It has been said, above, that LR 5.x versions had a bug where they did not apply noise-reduction or sharpening in some situations during the Export so its important to understand what precise versions of the products you're talking about.  Intending for the raw-conversion algorithms to be the same, and a coding error making them not so are two different things.  In other words the mathematics would be the same, but the implementation in a different programming language by different people could have coding errors.
As far as which of Nikon Capture or Adobe Lightroom/PS-ACR is better, the words someone says or writes are a fact if you have the recording or original documents, but the idea they are communicating is an opinion and you can really only list pros and cons for someone else to draw their own conclusion, and unless you're quoting word-for-word, your interpretation of what is being said is also somewhat of an opinion, yours.

  • Photos appear much darker in Lightroom than Photoshop or Picassa

    Hi
I've just put Lightroom onto my PC but all the photos I've imported look much darker than when I look at them in either photoshop or picassa.
I have to up the exposure and fill light to get the photos to match how they look in photoshop.
Is there something I need to do to rectify this?
    Cheers Rob

That definitely indicates the profile is to blame. If you care about your
prints and how your images look to others, it is a very good idea to buy a
hardware calibrator. Even the cheap ones (Huey Pro, SPyder 2, etc) do a
pretty good job. You really need separate hardware to do this. If you run
Windows 7 or Mac OS X there is a built-in software calibrator that uses your
eyes, but these usually do a pretty poor job.
To test the hypothesis and since you're running windows, try the following.
Open up your monitor's properties pane. Navigate to "color management" and
delete the profile you see there associated with your monitor (probably
called Samsung Natural Color something). Apply the changes and restart
Lightroom. You should now get identical (but wrong since you haven't
actually calibrated) color in both apps. Doing this makes Windows assume
your monitor is sRGB, which is rarely true nowadays. This is better though
    than using the corrupt profile.

  • CS4 Bridge and D90 NEF (RAW)

    HELP HELP HELP
I have recently purchased a bran new D90 and am having major issues in getting PS bridge to open the RAW (NEF) files in the CR utility. I have reviewed all the posts on here and tried to follow all the instructions!
    I have
    1) downloaded the latest CR version from the Adobe website and installed it (version 5.2)
    2) removed the NIKON NEF codec
    3) purged the Cache for the folder that the NEF files are located in.
None of this seems to have helped!!
Has anyone managed to solve this??
    PLEASE help!

Keeping in mind that Adobe stops adding new camera support to older versions of Photoshop when they release a newer version (so in your case, Camera Raw 4.6 is the latest version that will work with Photoshop CS3), then you'll need to go look up whether your camera is supported in version 4.6.
    In general:
    1.  Look on one of the following two pages for the latest Camera Raw version update that works with your Photoshop version:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Macintosh
    2.  Follow the link to the highest-numbered Camera Raw update for your version of Photoshop.
    3.  Follow the link within that page to the ReadMe information for that version of Camera Raw.
    4.  Go to the section in your native language and look through the complete list of supported cameras to see if your model is there.
If your camera model is not shown there, your options are:
    A.  Buy a Photoshop upgrade to the latest version so you can open your raw files right into Photoshop.
    B.  Use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert your raw files to DNG format, which your version of Photoshop can open.
    C.  Buy Photoshop Lightroom, which also provides a converter.  Note that this will not be integrated with your older version of Photoshop.
