DA G4 w/GigaDesigns upgrade needs Power Supply... Again... Help!

Hi!
I installed a GigaDesigns Dual 7455B 1.0-1.2(GIG5D1012Q) in my Digital Audio DP G4 533MHz on 6/22/04. The power supply died within 9 months.
I then bought another power supply on 3/8/05 from DV Warehouse(they assured me it was new - far from it... anyway). This one is slowly dying on me. The internal PSU fan has long stopped working, so for a month or two, the G4's case has been open and the PSU sits on top of the case with a room fan cooling it down from 3 feet away. WHAT(in Lil' Jon voice)...
As you can see, my power supplies last for 7-9 months ever since I installed the GigaDesigns upgrade card.
Should I try the MDD PSU mod? Is there maybe a tech that does that in NY?
Or, should I get another Digital Audio PSU that I know will go in 7-9 months?
Is there another way to extent my power supply's life?
What do you guys think I should do? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
Merry Christmas to all!

Two internal drives should not be a concern for heat, but the DIGI and video cards could be taxing heatwise and also taxing the power supply just a tad..
I don't have any recommendations for a PCI slot cooling fan - they're pretty generic items. When shopping, look for one with the highest CFM airflow and lowest dB (noise) rating you can find. This is a balancing act, as higher CFM ratings usually mean it's going to make more noise. Here's one from Antec at ZipZoomFly to give you an idea. Cracking the case door open isn't a good idea, as it negates the designed airflow characteristics and unless you provide additional airflow to the components, ad may actually make it run hotter than with the door closed.
WRT to dust - the most vulnerable spots for dust accumulation are the intake port at the front-bottom of the case right below the front drive bays, the PSU exhaust area, and the heatsinks on the processor(s). A quick blowout with canned air periodically is always a good idea to keep air flowing and things cooled as they should be.
Also, I do not see my topic in the topics list - I have to search for it. What did I do wrong? I guess there are different ways of posting. I just wanna post and reply without being asked whether my quetion was answered or not everytime.
I haven't posted a question since the changeover to the new Forum software, so I'm not the person to ask on this. I use the quick link to "My Posts" in the right sidebar to see what I've posted and jump back to it..

  • Adding USB card that needs power supply H520S

Just bought a 4 port USB 3.0 card for my H520S. I plugged it in and nothing. Then I read on the card manufacturer's website that I need to the connect the card to the PSU in order for it to work (there's an internal USB port on the card).
So I opened the PC and looked for an additional power source to connect the card to...but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for.
Is this doable on this model?
If so, what cables do I need and where do I connect the cable to?
    Thanks in advance

    hi,
This Device Will need a 4 pin peripheral  Power Cable (Molex)
Like the one to the left on this photo
Since the unit is pre configured by Lenovo all Connectors on the PSU may just be enough for all what's preinstalled inside the unit.
Still Check the power Supply of your unit check inside if there is one available This cable is directly from the power supply, so once you open the computer case Look for the power  supply and check the cables coming out from it and look for this connector here is a closer look
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/31/Molex_female_connector.jpg
If you cannot find out you might need to Upgrade the Power Supply.

  • Is it possible to have HP upgrade the power supply when purchasing a desktop? Base:300W Desired:400W

It isn't in the configuration options to upgrade the power supply. I am considering strongly an HPE500z with an upgrade to 1GB graphics card (from 512MB) and perhaps an upgrade to the processor. I do not know if 300 W should be able to handle the upgrades (it probably will be fine), but with potential future upgrades I see no reason to not go a little bigger on the power supply.
    Can anyone help?

How Much Power Do You Need?
    Component         Requirement    Line(s) Used
    AGP Video Card           30 – 50W    +3.3V
    Average PCI Card        5 – 10W    +5V
    10/100 NIC                   4W             +3.3V
SCSI Controller PCI Card 20W            +3.3V and +5V
    Floppy Drive                    5W           +5V
    CD-ROM                        10 – 25W    +5V and +12V
    DVD-ROM               10 – 25W    +5V and +12V
    CD-RW                                        10 – 25W   +5V and +12V
    7200rpm IDE Hard Drive                 5 – 20W    +5V and +12V
    10,000rpm SCSI Drive                 10 – 40W    +5V and +12V
    Case/CPU Fans                             3W (ea.)    +12V
    Motherboard (w/o CPU or RAM)    25 – 40W    +3.3V and +5V
    RAM                                        8W per 128MB    +3.3V
    Pentium III Processor                       38W              +5V
    Pentium 4 Processor                       70W                   +12V
    AMD Athlon Processor                       70W                  +12V
For overall power supply wattage, add the requirement for each device in your system, then multiply by 1.8. (The multiplier takes into account that today’s systems draw disproportionally on the +12V output. Furthermore, power supplies are more efficient and reliable when loaded to 30% - 70% of maximum capacity.)

  • Upgrading Soon / Power Supply Question

    3.3v is 38a
    +5v is 44a
    +12v is 20a

That would be a good power supply to get for my new rig, right?  I was thinking of getting a new power supply anyways, since I was gonna build another computer with some older parts.  This way I can keep some stuff in the old case, and just buy a new case/PSU for my new stuff.

  • Bad power supply AGAIN

I purchased a 20" iMac in the fall of 2005. The computer would turn off at random times without warning. At first it would only happen once a week or so, but it started happening more and more frequently until it finally got to where the computer would not stay on long enough to finish booting.
I took the computer into an Apple dealer and they determined that the power supply was bad and replaced it under warranty.
One year and 3 months later the computer has the same problem. Only this time it went from occasional power failures to continual power failures in a week. I looked on the web and found this:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/
My computer has the EMC number 2056 as stated on their website. However when I called about the problem they said they would not replace the power supply because my serial number does not match their list of "affected" serial numbers.
It seems obvious to me, given that I have had two power supplies go bad in just over a years time period, and that my number matches the number that they state on their web site, and that my computer was for the correct time period that I am a recipient of their bad power supplies. But this didn't matter to their support or customer service people.
I have been an Apple customer since the early days. My first Apple was an Apple II+. I have purchased my share of Apple computers and iPods. I have had my company purchase many Apple computers for me and other employees. I have to say though that if this is how I am going to be treated when they have an obviously defective product that it is time for me to look elsewhere for my computers.
    20" iMac

The Apple dealer or support person is confusing the TWO DIFFERENT extended repair programs, daburton. We've seen this happen a number of times here.
The original repair program was for the "first generation" iMac G5's. It depends on serial numbers - see http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
The second repair program applies to the 20" ALS 2 Ghz model, released about April 2005. THis is the model you have. This is the one that you have linked to - http://www.apple.com/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/ It applies to ALL 20" ALS 2 GHz imac G5's, regardless of serial number.
Unfortunately some repair providers and even some Apple phone staff don't seem to be aware of the second one and assume people are talking about the first when they ask for support.
Your repair should be covered by the second program without any problems if you point out the existence of two programs, not just one, to them.
If not, then it is certainly time to contact Apple at a point further up the food chain.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • 300w PS, 3.3v-24a, 5v-30a, 12v-12a Should I upgrade my Power Supply?

This post is a spin off of a couple of previous posts I started which raised a few new questions. Here goes: I have a 300w PSU (about 4 years old), 3.3v-24a, 5v-30a, 12v-12a. MSI VIA KM266 Pro, AMD Sempron 2500+, Kingston 256 Mb, Creative Platinum Live 5.1, HP CD burner, WD 80 Gb HD, using on board video for now. What I am wondering is should I upgrade my PS, or should I wait until I get a new Video card? Does my PS have what it takes? I have checked out a new 450w PS, and the rails weren't much higher: 3.3v-30a, 12v-17a. Does this make much difference? Any suggestions on a new PS, oh forum gods ?

  • Upgrade of power supply unit

hi guys looking to install a better graphics card, hard drives ect ect, the model computer i have is http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&lc=en&product=4228300
as the one installed is only 350watts, i was thinking about 800 watts will be good enough, any advice or products that you know will be good much appreciated

Most would advise against any PSU greater than 650W.  Additionally, physical size of the PSU is important. The depth of your existing PSU is 5.5" (140mm).  When approaching 600W and greater, these units start increasing to 6.3" (160mm) and more. That butts into the DVD connectors.

I have a HP PAVILION p6631p and ide like to add a graphics card, but I was told I had to upgrade my power supply.
The card I purchased is the SAPPHIRE RADEON R7 260X 2GB and I was told I need a 500watt or higher power supply.
I was looking at the CORSAIR BRAND power supplies and tried emailing them to help me find the right power supply, but they said they needed to know what type of power supplies HP use in this model PC.
I didnt know what to do so im hoping someone can help me out with this information CORSAIR is asking for so they can help select me the right power supply for my PC.
I been searching for answers for weeks. Hopefully someone can help. Thanks.

    KJonline, welcome to the forum.
You were told correctly.  You will have to upgrade the power supply unit (PSU) for the video card to work properly.
The PSU in the computer is a standard ATX.  I suggest measuring the existing PSU and comparing the measurements to the one you choose.
I normally suggest at least 500W, but 600W is better for future upgrades.  Here is a PSU that should work for you. It is 650W and is an Enthusiast series.  This means that it has all of the power that you will need.  It is 5.9" (W) x  3.4" (H) x 6.3" (L).

  • Looking to upgrade the video card and power supply in the K330

Hello, I'm looking to upgrade the power supply and video card in the Lenovo IdeaCentre K330 but I need to know if these parts will be accepted by the mobo.
Here's the card name (no link, don't know if theres a restriction to off site links) ASUS 2GB GDDR5 DIGI+ VRM technology Graphics Cards HD7770-2GD5
The power supply name follows: Xion High Performance 1000 Watt ATX Power Supply XON-1000P14F
Thanks for reading, and extra thanks for a good reply

Thanks for replying, I have looked into other PSU's and came up with this: XFX PRO750W Core Edition 80+ Bronze ATX 750 Energy Star Certified Power Supply
Feedback? And main question is, will they both (video card and PSU) be compatible with the motherboard that come standard in the K330?
I don't really have a need for the front panel except the power, and backontrack buttons.
Also, the reason why I'm getting a high wattage PSU is because I might later decide to build my own PC with the upgraded parts, and put the old parts back into the K330

  • E30 power supply/cables and upgrading video card.

I'm thinking of buying a decent gaming card, but I can't seem to find any power cables inside my system. The video card I'm looking at has a six pin connector on it. Also, just in case I need to upgrade the power supply, is the power supply unit standard ATX?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    welcome to the forum!
the E30 doesn't come with a PCI power connector due to it only being qualified to run the quadro NVS, 400, 600, and 2000/2000D workstation graphics cards.   you would need a different PSU entirely.   due to warranty and support reasons we can't recommend aftermarket PSUs in this system.
besides, depending on the GPU you're considering, the E30 might not have sufficient airflow to support it.   these are workstations after all and not gaming systems.
similar advice was given to another E30 owner in this thread.   i'm not sure what makes the E30 such a compelling gaming platform but to each their own.

  • Upgrading Power Supply hp pavillion p6744y

Need to upgrade the Power Supply. Just wondering if a 600 watt power supply would be too much for the motherboard to handle. Currently a 250 watt PSU is installed.
    HP Pavillion p6744y
    Windows 7 64-bit

It is highly unlikely that a 750 watt power supply will fit/work in your HP Pavilion 500-164 Desktop Computer. It is also completely unnecessary, as largest graphics card you can put in this computer will never use 1/4 of that power. Please consider the Corsiar CX500, CX500M, CX600, and CX600M for your power supply needs. These power supplies are the same physical size as the factory unit and are known to fit and work in most HP full-sized consumer desktop computers.

  • Elite e9150t - upgrading coolingfan/heatsink and power supply (suggestions for upgrade?)

    Hey guys,
I don't know why I didn't come here first, but here I am.
Basically, I have the HP elite e9150t model. Great computer... I've already upgraded a few things, but I am looking to do another little upgrade and would love to get some input. It's also Windows 8.1 Pro.
Alright, I've upgraded the ram to two 8gb kingston chips. I've also upgraded the video card to a GeForce 660 GTX. Now I am looking to upgrade my power supply and cooling unit. I've been running into problems where my computer will start to overheat when playing games. I can render out things easily enough with 3D software like Maya, but games make the system chug. That's why I've decided to upgrade the cooling unit and figured I should do the same for my power supply as well since it still has the 460w unit. I'd love to get this ugpraded to the point that I can play games with high settings and not worry about my computer dying on me from heat related injuries. I'm not looking to play games like Watch Dogs at the highest setting. I'd LOVE to have that, but I doubt I could squeeze that out right now. I would, however, love to play a game like Wildstar on their ultra setting (which I feel should be doable with my system).
Also, I am pretty much ignorant when it comes to computer hardware. When I say this, I am not exaggerating. I really have no idea what I am doing when it comes to this part of computers. Here are the two items that were suggested to me. Keep in mind, that I am on a budget right now (starting a new job next week after graduating this past week), so this is about what I can afford (this ~price range). I've also added a fan to the side panel of the computer (well I didn't, but the guy I bought it from did).
    First is the power supply:
XFX TS Series P1550SXXB9 550W ATX12V 2.2 & ESP12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Bronze Certified Active PFC Power Supply
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207013
550 Watt for ~$25 after rebate. Can't beat that and the people that recommended it were saying that it's made by a great company (SeaSonic?)
    And the cooling unit:

It was actually suggested I get the TX3, but I saw that the TX3 does not support LGA 1336 that the HP has.
    1) Case size: I've tried googling what type of case I have because it seems like that is the jelly to any peanut butter question on power supplies and/or cooling units. Will my suggested items fit in the case I have? It looks like a tight fit in there, so I don't know how well they'll fit.
    2) Are the recommended items good: Again, I don't know anything about this stuff and am going purely off recommendations. Are these the items that I do need?
    3) Another thing bugging me about the video card: Not exactly on topic, but I have the GeForce card in there right now and it's huge. I also have a sound card, but the way the PCI slots are setup, I have to put the sound card directly over the GeForce card (and the Geforce card has a fan on top of it blowing up). This has the heat blowing directly to the sound card. I don't know if this is what I want to do? I read somewhere that I want the video card closest to the heatsink? Could I reverse the order and have the sound card below the video card and still get away with it? It's a nice sound card and it's being wasted right now (not even in the computer).
Alright, thanks guys. I know I wrote a **bleep** essay here, but I wanted to be detailed as possible. Thanks again for those that stuck through the whole thing lol...

    Hi,
I suggest that you do some measuring from the top of the processor to bottom of the removable side panel. You need this measurement to determine if your chosen heat sink cooling  will fit.
When you install the new power supply then install it fan up pointing to top so that is draws cool air into the power supply from the top side air intake vents.  Measure your existing power supply and look for a high efficiency model with a large fan that will fit in your PC.  If you can find a PSU with a 140 mm fan that will fit then go for it.
Additional cooling ideas: PCI slot cooling fan and vented PCI slot covers.
Your particular PC probably has a single width graphics just link my e9280t (same cabinet and mobo).
BTW--the truckee mobo is not spec'd for 8 GB dimms.
You have made lots of changes already to your PC so  saying that you know very little appears to be underestimating your own ablities.
