Da old guy

What can I do when I lost my hard drive and can't reinstall Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 on the new drive?

What's preventing you from installing on the new drive?

  • How old guys have fun

OK, this topic ought to be broad enough, and some of the folks around here, old enough, that this one could carry on a while. Just tell us how you have fun!
    I'll start...
My wife and I flew down to Southern California for the day yesterday. The focus of the trip was to meet my niece's new son, the first boy born in our family in 42 years. Of course I wanted to play with his big sister too, because we would not want her to feel left out. And I wanted to get lots of pictures.
I didn't get most of the ones I really wanted - but shooting children is every bit as difficult as I was warned it would be. One mistake is that I waited until the little boy was too awake to get the peaceful shots of him and his father. Oh well, next time. So, while the 800 shots I did take, and a few videos, are being copied over to my hard drive, and being backed up to an external drive, I thought I would share these two pics that were taken by my niece.
This, my friends, is one way that an old guy has fun.

Oh, Steven ... that's the best way an old guy like us can have fun! LOVE the little ones ... holding one while sleeping is such an amazing high. The missus is a fantastic portraitist  for little ones & children/families ... putting a client's unhappy little one to sleep while they're ordering images with the missus has been a blast for me at times too. When the babe starts crying during an ordering session and they think they've got to leave, I just tell 'em give the tyke to me ... get a weird look but they normally do hand me the babe ... and in five/ten minutes there's a sleeping child in my arms when I come back and they wonder what in the world I've done with their child. As ... they can't do that like that.
Well ... somehow I attune to little babie's thoughts and ideas better than adults, I think. I've been to quite a few events at church or pro photo confabs with someone having a tuckered & sleep-fighting little one that other folks just say "give that babe to Neil!" ... and ... voila ... I've got a sleepy babe in arms, and no interest whatever in giving it back 'til mom/dad need to leave.
No grandkids ... so I love up all our younger friend's little ones any time I can. What a joy ...

  • Skype takes advance of old guy

Help anyone please.  Skype has taken $ 14 from my checking account twice.  They want to know when I first subscribed, but I'm an old guy and can't figure out how they took my money in the first place nor  WHEN this all started.  They have no phone number to call.  I would really like my $ 28 back, but they are stone-walling me.=== Tom

    1. Why didn't I get a CD (loaded w/the software) and how do I get one so I don't have to wait almost 14 hours on this %#@$ dial-up service?
iPods haven't come with CDs for a over a year. It enable Apple to use smaller, more eco-friendly packaging. Also, the software is updated often enough that you were likely to get outdated software anyway.
    2. I can't click and drag songs to the iPod can I?
Well, you could but the tracks would just be so much data (think thumb drive) and not playable music.
    3. Can I play MP3 formated songs on the iPod, or do they have to be iTunes?
3A. If no to the MP3 files, can I convert them?
Yes, iPods play mp3s. There is no such thing as "iTunes" format. The iTunes Store uses .aac. And yes, if you wanted to convert your mp3s to .aac you could but there would be no point.
    4. My daughter has DSL - I'm assuming she could downlaod the software and burn a CD for me, would that be a fair statement? (She's 70 miles away.)
Yes, this should work. Or, if you have an Apple Store near by, they might be willing to burn a copy for you. It certainly never hurts to ask.
    5. Doing the download at work is no longer an option - I retired last Friday - and want to start walking - so I need my "little tiny" iPod to work.
Enjoy your retirement. iPods certainly make exercise more enjoyable.

  • Advice From An Old Guy

    Times change, moderators come and go. Here is some advice from an old timer to any new moderators, and those that may desire to be one in the future. I was never an official full fledged moderator here at this forum or at others. Be that as it may, there are in my opinion, 3 'basic' elements to make a good moderator 'tech' wise, as I won't discuss the other factors such as maturity level and that kind of thing. Those 3 elements are;
#1 - Experience with the brand products, experience with other brands can also be helpful.
#2 - Product research, research, and continued research. Tech is a continuous conveyor belt on the move and changing all the time.
#3 - Sharing the experience and knowledge learned.
Additional advice, download the product pdf manuals, quick guides, etc.. and study them! Using Intel based as an example, start with the MSI 6 series boards, i.e. P6N Platinum SLI, P6N Diamond, then move to P45 Platinum, X58's, P67's, Z68's, and so forth. Same for graphics cards, etc.. Create an easy to use comprehensive set of categorized library files for yourself. Again, using Intel as an example, download their current product datasheets and Thermal and Design Guides on both CPU 'and' chipsets. Get a copy of the current JEDEC sheets concerning RAM industry specifications. Experience and shared knowledge, of which there is not a substitute for.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I 'am' trying to 'guide' you into being a better moderator. Speaking SATA III vocally is different than in print is it not? It is not an apples to apples comparison. You are held to a higher standard, and 'printed' SATA3 is 'not' right 'technically when discussing SATA other than a SATA port, but SATA 3 is at least 'somewhat' better acceptable than SATA3. MSI uses SATA 3 in the BBX II I am using at the moment in the BIOS, and it is technically incorrect. We could also debate IDE nomenclature, SATA, PATA, flat cable, etc., and what it all means. 'IDE' Mode when running a SATA drive? It can get confusing to some people. That is why the more correct the nomenclature is written, the easier to understand what a person is really trying to convey.
In the future? I don't actively contribute in the regular threads anymore, only active here in AUTS once in awhile, so my comments are going to be done in here, and it was applicable to 'this' thread. The whole purpose of this thread was actually drafted for your benefit, if you hadn't figure that out already.

  • External Monitor Question - New User W510 (old Guy, Limited Skills)

    Good Afternoon,
I have a new Thinkpad W510 for work.  When I hook my external mmonitor to the system, I can get it to display just fine.  However, when I close the lid top the actual Laptop, the system blanks out the external monitor.  My Toshiba Laptop never dis that (ran on XP Professional).  Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening?  Some setting?  Thank you for any help.
Moderator edit: Masked members email address to prevent spambots from getting it.

Yes. I'm assuming the computer is set to sleep when the lid is closed.
Go to the Start menu and search up "Power Options".
Then, in the sidebar, select "Change what closing the lid does" and for both battery and AC power, select "Do Nothing".

  • Several Questions From New-Old Guy

    Hi--
I'm about to buy some gear and I'd like some advice. Until around 2000, I was very active in computer-based sequencing and audio (I was a beta tester for Opcode, fer crissake), but I became more involved in live playing and I,well, stopped buying stuff. Everything, pretty much, needs to be replaced. I'm going to buy a Macbook, so my first question is: What makes the Macbook pro a good investment, aside from screen size, over a garden variety Macbook? I'm trying to keep the whole package as far under $2000 as possible
A little more about what I'm going to be doing, at least initially. I'd like to do relatively simple, live sounding sequenced rhythm tracks for my guitar and vocals, both for recording and live performance. I play acoustic and electric guitar, and will be doing sequencing with a Yamaha G-50 midi guitar interface. I'm very experienced with these types of units, so you don't have to warn me about them, I know the pitfalls--unless there's something better out there that I'm not aware of. Most of my material is jazz inflected singer-songwriter stuff, but the guitar playing is pretty advanced for the genre.
Logic Express or Logic studio? Will Mainstage be a large plus for live performance? Can I use vocal and guitar effects live while running a sequence just using Express? Can I play midi guitar, effected guitar & vocals simultaneously live? How much RAM will this require?
USB or Firewire interface? For the most part I won't need to record more than 2 channels at once, though I may expand later. Most of the small interfaces are so cheap that I'm not really worried about picking the wrong one, but I will need midi input. What's the best ca.$200 interface, and what are the pros & cons of Firewire vs. USB?
Is Craigslist a good idea if I decide to buy used?
    Thanks a lot.
    Clint

    Opcode eh? Who are they..?
    (just kidding!
A MBP will hold it's resale value longer, it has FW400 and FW800 ports for high bandwidth options (such as audio), it has a card slot for ESATA drives or UAD Xpanders, it has a larger screen size (13in on the MB is cramped for pro work), it has a dedicated graphics card (the MB shares the system RAM), and more ports in general.
Plenty of reasons why the MBP is a better machine for pro work - there are others too.
Always get FW interfaces / drives for audio work. Leave USB for mice and dongles etc - it has really bad performance for things like audio.
You can probably fulfill your requirements with Express, if the cost is an issue. Logic Studio has some advantages, especially in terms of core content and other utilties/plugins, but Logic Express is nearly Logic Pro these days.

  • Migrate from old macpro to new westmere.

shall I just do it as normal set up on the new westmere by firewire, or shall I start again installing all my applications from scratch ?. Are there any advantages to either?. I may be wrong but expect all my bloated , fragmented hard disk problems will migrate to the new machine. May be the Unix core isnt organised to let this happen ?.
The old guy is dual xeon 2.4 , the new 12 core.
    Thanks
    Nick

Migrate. It is easy. To be safe, clone first.
When you get done, clone again with SuperDuper to a new permentant home (whatever drive that is). Maybe back to the original when you feel safe!
SuperDuper consolidates free space, organizes folder directories and can be worth doing as needed or twice a year.
Boot drive popularity in performance: SSD - 300-600GB 10K VelociRaptor - 500-1TB-2TB enterprise models
I'd take and put the old system in the new Mac.
Westmere has a later build, so don't try booting the old system is all.
2.4? 2.26, 2.66, can't recall ever there being 2.4's though in Mac Pro.
    Congrats!! on the 12

  • HT201340 OK! Now what do I do with my Aperture library from my old mac that will not open on my new Mac with a different operating system? do I just loose all of the pictures ?

I just bought a new Mac Book Pro and I had Aperture on the old one.  Went to open it with the new OS and it says it wiil not open. How do I save my pictures and use them on the new computer?

Hello Pete from another old guy,
It sounds like you have an older iMac than the 2006 and newer model this forum covers. The problem is that, in 2006, Apple changed from PowerPC to Intel processors and third-party developers soon stopped making new software for the older processors. That's why you cannot upgrade Flash player--the current version requires a Mac the "2006 and later" processor.
However, not having a current version of FlashPlayer should not affect your ability to download. If you try downloading, do you get an error message or does something else happen?
Do you have another web browser like FireFox or Camino on your computer?
but would love to get my MAC back up to date and running right.
Well, "running right" may be doable but "up to date" may not be. You are already at as high a Mac OS level that a pre-2006 Mac can use.  We need to pin down your variant to make recommendations. From your Apple menu at the left end of the menu bar, do "About this Mac":
    That brings up this window:
Let us know what yours say for "processor." The two choices are "PowerPC" as in the example, or "Intel." If you  have an Intel processor, you have more options available.
    Awaiting your report,
    Allan

  • Old timer can't load old FCE.

After a long absence, I can't load my old FCE 2.0.1  Went through the FMS Remover process and still can't engage the application. Tried to dump "Preferences" without knowing why and had no success.  Is the program out of date?  Do I need another upgrade?  I'm an old guy with a thick brain.  Any thoughts?

    Thanks David,
I'm on a MacBook Pro/OS 10.6.7 and I successfully opened FCE with a total start-over after clearing the old program out.  Then I ran into the AGP issue and found (with the help of this site) that simply holding down "escape" let me get started.  Now I have another "issue."  I'm attempting to load a large file (75 G's) of HD footage from a hard drive into FCE and I've only got an S400 Firewire.  I'm guessing the reason I can't read any of the scenes (no render them) is possibly due to the need for a S800 cable to effectively load all the information.  If you can help I'd greatly appreciate your advice.  Otherwise, I'll seek an answer on this site.  Thanks for your attention.

  • A Tip for Fans of the Old Canon Printer Set-Up "Vivid" Setting

I'm absolutely thrilled that I've been able to replace my old Pixma ip6600D dye-ink printer with a new Pro-10.  However, I was dismayed that the new printer settings do not have a simple "Vivid" check box like the older printer.
Without it, color-managed prints come out "naturally saturated" on any of the wonderful ICC-profiled papers I've tried even when I want them artificially popping with saturation.  Here's an analogy for us old guys:  despite the monitor displaying Velvia-like saturation, the print comes out with relatively subdued Kodachrome-like saturation.
BTW, this difference shows up in the excellent "Print Preview" function.  Is any of this a failing of the Pro-10 or for that matter any other pigment-ink printer?  Nope!  It's simply the way pigment inks perform versus dye inks.
So, lacking a "Vivid" check box, what's the fix?   On another forum a member suggested going back into the image editor and pumping the color saturation way up by 30 points!   (BTW, when you do this, you'll want to save the modified file with new file name to protect the original)
I tried it.  What I saw on the screen scared me!   I couldn't believe the garish image would print well.  Yet, it did beautifully.  In fact, depending on your photo editing software, you might even want to go as high as 40 color saturation points to get the saturation "pop" you're looking for.
If you, too, have been missing the "Vivid" check box, give this fix a try.  I think you'll be glad you did.
(Pssst!  Hey, Canon software guys . . . Really!  Where's the "Vivid" function?  Put it back in, please!)

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Reading your post, it sounds like you have done the correct printer queue setup. But since the 3380 is printing mostly blank sheets with the Canon PPD or Generic PostScript selected, this would be an indication that the printer does not have the PostScript license installed.
So, one suggestion would be to use an alternate driver, such as the UFR2. Most iR copiers support the UFR2 language as standard, while PCL and PS can be options.
You can download the UK English version of the latest UFR2 driver that will support your iRC3380 via this link.
    http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100212608.html
The UK English driver can be used in the US region (I wasn't sure where you are located). The LTR and LGL sizes are still supported. I think the primary difference is the naming of the Canon devices.
Anyway, with this driver installed, you can add the printer queue again, just the same as you have done previously, but this time in the Print Using menu you need to select "Canon iR C Series UFR II (UK)".
See if this works for you and reply if needed.

  • How do I recover a lost partition on my mac

When I used Disk Utility it showed my mac hard drive, and another what I assumed was a partition named Apple (something or other) as you can see I am not very savvy.  I eventually realized that this partition was now under a different name and shown under the section that shows the mounted external drives.  It was now called Greys Anatomy so6 e16.  Once I realized that it was the missing partition I tried to re name it, and could not, so then I tried to move it back to the place it had originated from using a "how to" video on you tube. now I have lost the thing altogether any one help an old guy who is quite lost and can not afford to go to the computer shop

  • Gen 4 iPod touch will not come back to life from recovery mode. Plus: going to Apple store, in Japan?

    Hi everybody,
I know this is probably a commonly asked question, but I've been looking through other threads and haven't found anything that works so far.
iPod touch died a while ago and gave me the "restore me" screen. (Showing a USB cord plugging into Itunes). But, when I try to restore it won't let me.
I'm running a MacBook 5,1 with OS X 10.6.8 installed. My iPod touch is 32 GB, model Model A1367, 4th Generation.
I know it's old but if there's a chance at resurrecting, I want to give the old guy a chance.
    When I click "restore."
Itunes says that it's "extracting software," then starts switching between "verifying ipod restore with apple" and "preparing ipod for restore." The Ipod itself displays an apple with a progress bar.
Then it says "the ipod could not be restored, an unknown error occurred (40)"
I've tried a different internet connection and switching USB ports.
I also edited the "hosts file" as follows:
    # 17.151.36.30 gs.apple.com
I added this line, but I don't understand the hosts file very well. For example: no idea what the hashtag is for?
Let's see…I don't have any security software to speak of. I updated iTunes after I finally got 10.6.8 installed.
Also: I live in Japan! Japanese is not much of a problem, but I'm unsure of how much support I can get for an elderly American model. Is it difficult for an Apple stores to work with products that came from overseas, or is there that not much of a difference?
    Thank you!!

    Check for hardware issues
    Related errors: 1, 3, 10-47, 1002, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1000-1020, 1669.
Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
The later means, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Can I share my downloads on my iPad?

Can I share my downloads to my iPad2 with my children's iPad2's? They live in different states. Or is it just to devices in my home?

    Allan,
Do they have to bring their iPads here (to my house) to get synced or is just accessing my iTunes account and downloading what they want from my downloads (iBooks) ? They all live in differant states. Will they need my password?
Sorry, these might seem like simple questions for those that are computer savvy, I'm just an old guy that isn't very computer smart.

  • How can I get my G4 to run fast again?

I remember the halcyon days, when this bad boy ran as fast as I could think. These days, he's like toothless old guy on the bus with his walker in the middle of the aisle. Switching between programs is slow. I look at the beachball way too often. Even when I type in MS Word, the letters sometimes take a second to show up on screen.
I'm not typically using any memory eating programs (though I occasionally use the Adobe suite) Mostly the trouble is happening with Firefox/MS Word/iTunes/Excel etc...
What can I do to get my computer back up to speed?
I can't afford to get a new machine, but I can afford to upgrade some of the parts, I can swap hardware and software, or I can wipe the drive. Whatever it takes to save my aging beauty.
    Here are the specs
    iMac 17" flat panel.
    768 Mb SDRAM
    800 mhz G4
    OS 10.4.9
Hard Drive 75 gb, 50 available.
I'd appreciate any advice. Guiding me to a website with clear ideas would be helpful too.
iMac 17" flat panel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Afraid I'm in the same boat. I've a 700MHz G4 iMac with 512k of memory and 10.3.9.
Trouble is, since I've started a photo diary, the poor devil's run out of steam. From the speed of the new Intels, I think I'll have to go for a new machine early next year, even though the idea is very depressing. I really don't want to lose my angle-poise box. It's so comfortable to use, being able to move the screen around and so on. But trying to use photos on this machine is just too hard for it. I assume there's a lot of processor-intensive work going on. For the cost of two new 512k chipsets, though, it'd be probably cheaper to get a whole new system. Sadly.
For the techies, I already run the disk utility for permissions. I don't have any particular software, apart from my Nikon package for the pictures. Apart from that, I'm a writer, so all I use mainly is Word and mail with a chunk of Safari. Oh, and iTunes all the time, of course!
