Daily Backup (Of one specific folder, changes daily)

I have a folder which records and saves some new audio files everyday automatically and it is eating up my onboard hard drive. I bought a Time Capsule and want it to update that specific file everyday so that it is not stored locally but on the server. Any ideas on how to do this?

Use the Finder to locate and then mount the Time Capsule drive on your desktop. Unless you have changed the name of the drive, it will be called "Data". Post back if you are not sure how to do this.
Drag/drop or copy/paste the file on the "Data" icon that is on the desktop.
I don't know what appliction you are using, but I'm sure that you will have to "point" the application to the new location of the files so that they can be found. I would suggest that you get a clear understanding of....
1) Whether the application you are using will allow files to be stored in a separate location on another drive.
2) How to tell the applicaton where to find the files in their new location.
I guess I am wondering if you move the file from your computer to the Time Capsule drive.....when...not if....the Time Capsule drive has a problem, do you have another backup copy of the file on another drive?  If you don't, when the Time Capsule drive has a problem....you lose everything since you do not have a backup of this file.
You might want to consider a different plan. Use an external drive connected directly to your computer for your file. Then, Time Machine will automatically backup your computer and the external drive so your "originals" in one location and "backups" in another. That would be the safe approach.

  • Use Time Machine on ONLY one specific folder?

I wish to use the Time Machine function to backup only one specific folder on my computer, the DROPBOX folder.
How can I implement this and inform Time Machine of my choice?
According to my first investigations, I only have the choice to select folders to EXCLUDE. This makes the setup of Time Machine unconfortable.
    Any advice?

    I agree with Jeffrey Jones2 above .
Makes no sense to backup the dropbox folder alone, Dropbox It is "cloud storage" and has its own backup. Dropbox keeps a snapshot every time you save a file. You can preview and restore.
If you go to the DROPBOX website you can view deleted file from the trash can icon (see below.)
From there it is a matter of Restore the file. This would work for accidentally deleted files,  there maybe a 30day archive limit so read the small print for details.
If it is imperative to your backup plan,  just drag and drop  your folder to any external storage device, just not the Time Machine HD/partition.

  • Can I stop one specific folder from being opened by anyone but me?

I have private files in a folder that is contained within the home folder on my Macbook Pro. I want to lock that folder so that only I can access it. But I do not need to lock any of the other folders on the Mac.
    How do I do this?

If you just log out of your account, they won't have access to the folder. However, if you created the folder within the root of the home folder, then the permissions allow others to see into it.
You can either move it inside one of the protected folders inside your home folder (Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, Desktop, Library), or change the permissions on the folder. It should be set for you to read/write and everyone No Access.
If you let everyone into your account, then the only way would be to create an Encrypted Disk Image which you store the folder on. Use Disk Utility to create an Encrypted Sparse Image and set a size that will work. Set an encryption algorithm and same the image. Mount it, don't check the box to save the password to your keychain, copy the folder into it and eject the mounted disk image. Open it and make sure you have everything and then delete the original folder.

  • How can I scan to more than one specific folder?

For example, I want to scan in a document from the printer but want it to go into folder A. Next I want to scan another document but I want it to go into folder B. I know how to create a permanent destination for my scans, what I want to know is, is there a way to get the document to save to a folder if it is open an active let say (if the desktop is active it saves to the desktop or if my document folder is open and active it saves to the document folder). Thank you very much!

    Welcome to the forums MFSOUTH,
I saw your post about wanting to change where your scans are directed to. My suggestion would be to change the scan destination through the printer software when you make a scan and want it saved to a certain folder (Folder A or B). You won't be able to send a scan from the printer and have it save to multiple folders.
If there is other inquiries you have, please feel free to ask!

  • LR 5 does not want to synchronize one specific folder?

I have recently updated to LR 5 on a new computer (Win 8 - with 32GB RAM) and created the catalogs (I have 3 different catalogs) without any problem at all. But just found out that inside a series of folder, one was missing. The folder is on the drive, recognized by LR5 (even shows the count of images) but when I hit "synchronize" it runs - shows task completed, then receive a message that there is no images or videos were found. On my other computer, it sync perfectly with LR 4.4.
I have tried to used the add folder command - same issue. I have deleted the folder completely from my hard drive and copy it from my old computer (which sync in LR 4) and reinstalled it on the new computer - still unable to synchronize and add the folder with the images. I am very experienced with catalog, adding folders, synchronizing and I have never encouter this problem before. Anyone there has an idea? Seems like a bug to me but not sure what the heck is going on? My catalog contains many folders and subfolders and all is fine except for only one folder....????

  • Windowserver spikes to 100% cpu opening one specific folder

one issue keeps haunting my imac 27" (late 2013) running on maverick 10.9.4
everything runs pretty fine until i open one folder containing further folders with jpgs. the primary folder is 1.98 gb, but i have other folders on the external wd my book drive that are 78 gb heavy and don't have that issue of windowserver spiking up to 100 % cpu. the problem is limited to that one folder.
i have know idea, what makes that folder special. i didn't have these problems on my old imac, where i can open the folder, delete jpg etc. without any problem.
    any suggestions?

It's probably a combination of Flash and video decoding. Flash is not coded very efficiently on the Mac and uses more CPU than it should. On an older machine, this can tax the CPU to its limit. You can watch CPU usage spike even on Flash sites that don't use video - try it sometime.
Second, the way that current video codecs get so much quality out of so little bandwidth is by applying encoding so intensive that you need a very powerful CPU to decode it. Codecs that assume they will be running on the 2GHz dual-core CPUs of the last few years will overtax the slower single-core G4 processors of half a decade ago.
I can watch Hulu and other videos on my PowerBook G4 at standard resolution (Hulu at a low frame rate, though), but the G4 cannot handle high quality resolution playback at all.
In your case, it's important to kill off any CPU-intensive processes that don't need to be running in the background when you're trying to watch something.

  • CAN I PUT ALL MY FOLDERS AND INFO IN ONE MASTER FOLDER SO THAT IT'S EASY TO BACKUP PERIODICALLY?

    Hello,
I thought of a solution to backing my files up in a quick way instead of having to look around all over my hard drive to drag my music, photos, documents, etc into my external hard drives for backup. (which is the current method I use)
Id like to know if there would be any downsides simply putting all of the information like: music, documents, photos, videos and downloads (not including Applications) into one unique file.
I am trying to avoid using Time Machine and backup Applications. I understand you can also program hard drives to mirror each other, but I belive my current external hard drives do not support this.
The question is basically: could it be harmful in any to  store ALL(or as much) of your info that requires periodic backup into one master folder? Or does anyone know of any rule that may go against this solution?
    Thanks beforehand for the feedback.
    Emmi.

    Yes.
A long time ago Apple did not force users into keeping their files in specifed locations, such as music in the Music folder, movies in the Movies folder etc. However, iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto all have evolved to the point that Apple has made it difficult for us to do anything other than follow their recommended locations.
There are certainly ways around this - you can specify alternate locations for your iTunes Library and your iPhoto Library for instance, but you will be swimming against the tide. This will undoubtedly cause problems that will be difficult to diagnose because you will be a lone outlier, attempting to circumvent Apple's preferred organizational method.
I understand that you do not want to use Time Machine, but again this is Apple's recommended (if arguably heavy-handed) way of doing things. You can easily configure Time Machine to exclude folders that you do not want it to back up. If Time Machine does not address your needs, then consider Carbon Copy Cloner. It can also be customized to back up only those folders you specify: music, documents, photos, videos and downloads if that is your wish, and it can perform on a schedule.
I believe you will find it more convenient - and assure you it will be much less likely to cause difficulty - than what you propose.

  • Find Specific File Type Group in Specific Folder

Hi, I dont know how to find a specific group of files (i.e. all movies, all music etc) in one specific folder (and its sub folders) on Snowleopard.
I do know how to find a single file type (i.e. .mov, .mp3)
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi,
    And, Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    In the search box, type
    kind:
(that's "kind" followed by a colon) followed by either
    movie
    image
    or
    music
I just tested it myself (I've never actually used it!) and it works a treat.

  • Can Time Machine back up to specific folder within external hard disk?

I have never used Time Machine, always using the Lacie backup software to back up to a folder I've named macintosh HD on my Lacie external disk. I have other folders containing data not on my macbook. The disk is not partitioned.
I decided to try Time Machine, but it only seems to give me a choice to back up to the whole Lacie external disk. The folders within it are all greyed out. I'm worried if I did use it, it would erase over my existing folders?
Is there any way to use Time Machine to backup to a specific folder within an external hard disk with already existing files on it?
    Thanks

no, you can not designate a folder for TM backups. But TM will not erase anything already on your drive provided the drive is correctly formatted. It has to be formatted mac os extended journaled with GUID partition scheme for intel macs and APM for PPC macs.
If the drive is formatted correctly TM will simply make a folder at the top level of the drive. However, IMO it's an incredibly bad idea to keep other data on the same partition with TM. i strongly recommend you make a separate partition just for TM. There are just too many situations when you need to erase your TM drive and start backups over. having other data on that drive makes this very inconvenient.

  • How can you merge multiple daily backups into one backup for that day?

Ok, so I had some trouble getting Time Machine to backup some new files and finally had a force a "deep traversal." But now I have 20+ backups for today before I did the "deep traversal" because I was selecting "Back Up Now" to get it to backup up the new files.
Because it is annoying to have so many backups for one day, which differ only by incoming and outgoing emails, I am wanting to combine all the backups for today into a single backup for today. Is there any way to do this?
    Thanks!

Yes. Wait 24 hours, and Time Machine will do it for you. It keeps all backups for 24 hours, but only one (the first of the day) for a month. Thereafter, it keeps one per week, deleting the others, as long as there's room. • Time Machine: Backup folder changing size when connected to different computers

Can someone please help me wrap my head around why the size of my Time Machine backup folder changes when connected to different computers? I tried to be as thorough as possible.  Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.
I made a backup of my one laptop (MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) before installing Mavericks.  The backup folder size is 258.56 GB and it is on a 1TB WD external.  There are no other computers backed up in this folder.
Last night, I tried to copy the backup folder to another 1TB WD external and ran into the “you can’t do that” message.  After some researching, I came across articles explaining how Time Machine handles HDs and, in order for me to copy my backup folder, the drive I want to copy the folder to needs to have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected.
Okay, so here is my situation: I have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected and journaling is correct on the drive I want to copy the backup folder to.  So I can continue working on my laptop, I want to use a different computer to copy the backup folder from one HD to the other.  The problem I’m having is each computer I own is showing me a different backup folder size O.o.
    (1) The computer I want to use – a Power Mac G5 Quad running 10.4.11 (non intel) – is showing a backup folder size of 592.7 MB, but the HD shows there is 258 GB being used.  When I drag copy, I only get a 592.7 MB backup folder.  For some reason, the backup folder is the only folder acting this way. I compared other folders from the same and different externals and all the sizes match up perfectly no matter the computer they were connected to. How is this possible?
    (2) My second option - Mac Pro (early 2009) running 10.9.4 – is showing a 256.15 GB backup folder size.  Very close, but not 258.56 GB.
    (3) My last option is to use the computer I’m trying to stay away from, the MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.  This is the computer I backed up and is showing me the correct folder size = 258.56GB.  As I mentioned, I'd like to work on my laptop while copying the backup folder using one of my other computers.
I am able to drag and drop from each computer, but the folder size depends on the computer I’m using.  I don’t understand why I can't do a simple drag and drop of a 258 GB folder.
    Many thanks!!

The directory files that you are seeing are not real. They are links to the actual backup files that are stored in a hidden directory on the drive. If you were to look at the same drive on a pc, you would see the folders and you would a list files that are in the folders but the files would all be 0 byte files and Windows will tell you the file is empty because there is nothing there but a link which Windows does not understand.
So the point is you can't just copy the backupd files. The best solution that I know of (and maybe someone else will chime in) for copying them is to mirror the drive with something like Carbon Copy or some other program.

  • How to restore an iPhone from a specific folder that iTunes doesen't recognize as a backup but in fact it is a backup?

Hi, I have an iphone 5 on wich I made factory reset. When I wanted to restore yesterday a backup from iTunes (22.5.2013.) in the middle of restoring there was an error saying that there is not any more space on the computer. After that I can't restore it any more with this backup - the last backup that is available is the one made couple of hours ago. BUT I searched for this backup in the App Files of my WinXP and found that backup folder with many files in there but I don't know how to make my iTunes to restore an iPhone with this specific folder - it seems that iTunes doesen't recognize this folder as a backup but in fact that is a backup.
    Thanks for help.

    Hello olip0101,
    From the following article:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    Restore from a backup
If you have a new iOS device, or if you need to restore your device to resolve an issue, follow these steps:
Connect your iOS device to the computer that has your backup.
Make sure this computer has the latest version of iTunes.
Choose File > Devices > Restore from Back up.
If you're using iTunes 10.7 or earlier, right-click the device from the list and choose Restore from Backup.

  • ITunes won't download to specific folder after iphone name change in iTunes

I accidently changed the name of my iphone on iTunes. I have changed it back to what it used to be named. But, now when I download a song from iTunes on my phone. It will not download it to the specific folder it used to. Now it downloads it to a specific folder called "Purchased on iPad". Songs will stay there until I sync my phone to iTunes on my computer and I click "Transfer purchases". Then it takes them and places them on "Purchansed" tab. After I finish transfering perchases I disconnect my phone and I have to go back into itunes and go to purchased tab and have to redownload them again which go again into "purchased on iPad" folder on my phone and stay there until I sync my phone again to iTunes... its a vicious cycle and driving me nuts. Is there any way to have it downlaod again to my specific folder "purchased on iphone" and keep them there? Hope someone can help.

I actually tried with two other iPod software cds, uninstalling and reinstalling, and nothing is working.
When I go into the library and look for an import button none is to be found!!!

  • Changing proposed delivery date in sales order for one specific sales org

    Hi All,
I want to change proposed delivery date in sales order automatically for one specific sales org only without changing lead time in VOV8.
For that can I use MV45AFZZ. But it is asking access key to make changes. Is there any other user exit for the same. And how does exactly change it.
    Thanks in advanced.
    Points will be awarded.
    Regards,

EXIT_SAPFV45E_001 has nothing to do with this - it is meant to update the purchase order from a sales order. It might not even be triggered if the sales order has no link to a purchase order.
USEREXIT_SAVE_DOCUMENT is not really good for this either, because the delivery date has to be changed before that. If memory serves, it also influences the schedule lines and probably the ATP check and such. I would strongly advise against it. One of the other routines in MV45AFZZ should do just fine, USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBAK for example.
