Daily crashes, flashing screen, 'quit' greyed out

Question

I'm getting this combination nearly every time I'm recording audio.
Simple arrangements - 1 Omnisphere, a couple of EXS's, 1 RMX, Superior playing a simple time keeper part, five parts in total.
I then begin recording audio and sooner or later it all goes south. Key commands don't work, 'stop' doesn't work, the screen flashes, playhead stays put even when the track's playing, and I can't quit, I have to force quit. Needless to say any audio isn't being recorded at this point.
This is 9.1.1 on a MacPro running OS 10.6.3. All clean installs. Everything up to date. Running in 32 bit.
I moved up from 7 to 9 around three months ago and it's a far cry from the stable and professional environment I had with 7. I'm half wishing I'd never begun using 9.

Hi,
1.- Are you recording onto a dedicated audio drive (not the system drive)?
2.- How much RAM do you have? Is it cheapo memory? Does it pass the memory test?
3.- Have you run the maintenance tasks with something like Onyx? I run it once a month, minimum.
