Daily / Hourly rates for NYC Editors

Howdy -
I'm looking for a general ballpark that Freelance Editors/Colorists are charging clients in NYC. I am an Apple Certified Pro in FCP, and have been at this editing thing for 8+ years now. I've been with companies up until recently. I've started freelancing and don't want to under bid myself or through a number out that is ridiculous. My main work would include corporate clients, SD/HD onlining and color grading. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great! Thanks so much for your help!
Cheers,
Sean

Two things you can do while waiting for responses here:
• Go to mandy.com and look at the area for "Post-Production, Fully Paid" (for New York) to see who is talking about money and what they're offering. It will be a small glimpse into your own backyard.
• Go to this website and calculate what your rate "should" be.

  • Going RATE for Final Cut Editor, Apprentice, Assistant,  - -FUTURE in FCP?

By trade, I am a composer, and have scored numerous trailers, DVD's, worked in A&R, blaa blaa blaa! (LOL).
Am just getting into FCP Suite (motion, soundtrack, etc)...
Was wondering what the take here (pun intended) is on FCP and it's future! For a while I was seeing lots of FCP editors needed, then it goes back to Avid (especially for television) and was wonder what everyone thinks the future holds for FCP users in the work place!
In addition, just starting out, what are some fair rates compared to a season pro (FCP). I know the standard rate for Avid editors. Just wondering if someone could HASH out a list, from assistant (digitizing, edits, batch processing) to assistant editor/sound designer to FULL BLOWN pro with FCP!
    Thanks!

Welcome to the family and try not to take anything personally around here. I've never met you and you don't know me from a jar of Vicks Vapor Rub. Your questions are interesting and we see similar threads a few times every month. Search for "rates" and "making a living using FCP" and "freelance."

Speculating on FCP's future is pointless and this isn't the place to do it anyway, such posts will be pulled. Try creativecow.net, lafcpug.org or any of the hundreds of other FCP-related sites that are not controlled by Apple.(Grammar patrol: It's "its", not "it's")

There are no reliable figures that accurately reflect employment or applications-in-use. They are all anecdotal and they change with seasons and which part of which industry you are attempting to evaluate. Pick a product and get good at it or, as many of the wonks around here, get REALLY good with many popular products.

You didn't state your location or what you have heard is a "standard rate" for Avid editors: it's the same or it's different. Is there a different rate in your market area for a guy who can play a 12-string guitar than a woman who can play a 4-string bass? Your emphasis in audio and music sets you apart from millions of other video dweebs. Exploit those skills because I don't have any such.

  • Different Hourly Rates in A Production Line - Line Scheduling- Flow Manufacturing

    Hi All,
We have some requirements for our client in using Line Scheduling and Flow Sequencing. As we know, we can set up hourly rates either minimum or maximum in each production line. However, our client has different variant products that assembled and scheduled within one production line, and they have different hourly rate in every single product. Let's say if they have product a and product b that manufactured in one production line, they have two different hourly rates as well. How to recognize different hourly rates within one production line? and how to set up production lines so it can make scheduling and consider daily production rate for different kind of products?
Anyone ever experience in implementing Flow Manufacturing?
    Thank you
    Regards,
    Wijana

    Dear SAP CONS,
In my understanding this production line concept is generally used in a  repetitive manufacturing scenario which can be further
used for line balancing. Moreover if production rate is available for a line, then creating the work center under category0007 is
suggested, which is more suitable for REM scenario.
In your case the work center's can be created as individual work center using category 0001 and assign the setup formula
containing the parameter only for setup which is not a dependent on order quantity )and suitable formula for processing.
So maintain the setup time as 1 hour in the routing and this will be applicable for the whole order quantity.
Check and revert whether this works out.

  • Machine Hour Rate

    Dear All,
In our shopping flour we have a one Mechine of 10,00,000/-, every day we have so many project are working on that Mechine.
Here my point is how we can calculate the Mechaine Hour Rate.
    for EX:
    If we have taken KP06
Cost Element : Mechine Hour Rate
    Cost Center :  Department A
then _I have to maintain the 10,00,000/- _   Is it correct?
    then in KP26
    Cost Center : Department A
Work Center : Work Center A
if i Execute, then what can i Menchition : Life span of the Mechaine Hours Is it correct?
If both are correct statements then i will calcuate the KSPI Automatic Calculation.

  • No daily exchange rate defined for rate type Corporate

We are entering a transaction in AR for currency XDR (Nav Path in Receivables: Transactions->Transactions; Form Name: ARXTWMAI, FOrm Version: 11.0.62).
The currency XDR is supposed to be IATA Rate related and has nothing to do with Corporate Exchange Rate (i.e. Bank rate). We have IATA Rate and Corporate conversion rate types (Nav Path in Receivables: Setup->Financials->Currencies->Rates->Conversion Type).
While entering the transaction, we get this message:
    "FRM-40735: ON-INSERT trigger raised unhanled exception ORA-20000.
ORA-20000: GLMCCURB: There is no daily exchange rate defined from XDR to MUR for MAY-00 for rate type Corporate.

APP-01728: An assignment does not exist for these parameters.
Cause: An attempt was made to find a sequence for this document flexfield. The option says Sequential Numbering is only partially used.
Action: None is necessary unless you expected this document flexfield to have a sequence defined."
We checked the Daily Rates from XDR to MUR (Nav Path in Receivables: Setup->Financials->Currencies->Rates->Daily) and it shows only IATA rates, which is correct since XDR is not for Corporate rate type.
What we don't understand is why the error message prompts for an exchange rate to be defined from XDR to MUR for rate type Corporate.
Where is it defined that the transaction should look for rate type Corporate? Should I define it to look for IATA rate type for such kind of transaction?
    Can anyone advise. Thanks.

    Andrew Li,
1.For the first message, please check to your DBA, maybe there is some patches should apply.
    2. For the error msg APP-01728: An assignment does not exist for these parameters. Do you use document sequence number ? If Yes, make sure your document sequence has been assigned to proper SOB, and then please check profile option for Sequential Numbering. The Sequential Numbering profile should Partially Used or Always Used.
I hope it will solve your problem

  • Creating less expensive small xSAN for 2 editors - suggestions?

I've been setting up a second editing bay for our company which is supposed to have identical capabilities to my own. It's a Quad with Kona LHe, just like I'm using. We mostly edit TV comercials in DV50, uncompressed 10bit SD and DVCProHD 720P so our bandwidth requirements usually out spec editing over ethernet.
Since both editors need to have equal capability, I have chosen to create a small xSAN to allow both editors to access the same media drives simultaneously. With a SAN, large server volumes (located on a fibre channel network) show up on the editor computers just as a simple local hard drive would at very fast speed. You can point FCP scratches to the same places on each machine, then use any machine to edit any project instantly. My budget is large by my standards, but not very large on the scale of typical xSAN implementations so I've been collecting "deals" on the gear I need before I put it all together.
Since I'm on a budget, it has been fun finding much of the gear on ebay, etc. FYI, here is a quick list of the stuff I've acquired:
    xServe RAID 5.6TB refurbished from Techrestore.com: $5900
xServe 2Ghz Metadata controller w/ Tiger Server 1.5GB ECC RAM, PCIX fibre card new, but last year's model from Smalldog: $2600
Brocade Silkworm 3200 8 channel 2Gb entry fibre switch new on ebay: $950
2 PCI Express fibre cards new for 2 editor G5 quads: $1100
3 xSAN licenses new on eBay: $1300
Mini GB ethernet network stuff and switch (for metadata only - separate from our LAN network): $150
Misc. fibre cables and tranceivers: $700
One of my editing G5's will act as the fallback Metadata controller in case the xServe goes down at any time.
I also am planning on at least 8 hours of time from a local xSAN authorized tech to help me set everything up and teach me what I need to maintain the system. This should be about $700 or so.
I have found several articles posted at xsanity.com very helpful in planning this.
If any of you have any experience with xSAN, you might agree this is a very low cost of entry into this very exciting new workflow. $13.5K for a fully functioning xSAN of this size is not bad at all. Many would spend that on the xServe RAID alone, sans SAN;-) And I can expand very easily since my switch will still have 3 unused ports. Note: the 5.6TB xServe RAID will only be about 4TB after accounting for the RAID 5 and dedicated (and mirrored) metadata volumes. Only 4TB. Pity!
Now that I have the main hardware components ready, it's time to install and setup the system. I'll be posting my progess in the next few weeks as this happens, but first would like to hear any impressions on this. Suggestions or warnings are appreciated by those with experience with xSAN. The xSAN forum here at Apple is used mostly by IT professionals and I'm mostly interested in hearing comments from editors and those that use the system in small settings like my own.
One question for the Gurus: I don't believe FCP projects can be opened and used by two people at the same time, but if there is a way to do this without corrupting the project file, I would love to know.
I'm also seeking to hire an assistant to occupy the new editing bay. Broad multimedia skills are needed, but I can train to a degree. We're an advertising agency just north of Salt Lake City, Utah. Please let me know if any of you are interested.

Thanks for the suggestions. Brian, I'll be sure to get you some points once I close the topic.
I didn't realize the Project files are best copied to the hard drive. Is this for a permissions related reason or just to avoid short spikes in bandwidth during saves?
I agree that Metadata is best on a dedicated controller with full scale xSANs, however with just 2 systems editing mostly DVCPro50 resolution projects I can't imagine burning up more than 100MB/sec at any given time. OK, maybe, but this is unlikely for next year or so. I've read that a single controller can achieve 80MB/sec easily, so 2 should be around 150MB/sec under heavy load. I'll have the metadata mirrored to 2 drives on one side of the XSR and the remaining 5 drives on that controller in a RAID 5. The other side of the XSR will be a full 7 drive RAID 5. These 2 data LUNs will be striped together in xSAN to achieve a full bandwidth of about 150MB/sec. I was told that the XSR controller can handle multiple RAID's at the same time so I can send metadata to one mirror array and designate the other as a RAID 5 LUN. Considering the small size of the data going to the metadata volumes and the relative simplicity of RAID 1 mirroring, I believe the controller shouldn't be adversly affected by this. Is this incorrect in your experience?
I do plan on turning off the cache of the XSR since the system will be used for editing, yet it would be nice to have cache for the metadata so that's a point to consider.
THe metadata should be segregated on its own XSR controller.
Are you saying that the metadata sharing the same controller as the video data is going to slow the whole system down even though the metadata is located on separate, dedicated drives in that controller? I thought metadata was tiny and required very little bandwidth on the bus of a controller. If this is the case, the only bottleneck would be the RAID chip in the XSR. Again, these metadata files are very small and RAID 1 is very simple, so I don't see how it could slow things down enough to justify another $4K for a new XSR. If you still disagree, please let me know.
As per your suggestion, and considering your stellar reputation in this forum, I'm shopping right now for a mostly empty xServe RAID to use this for just the Metadata volumes mirrored. It just seems like a huge waste to get an XSR just to use 2 drive bays mirrored. The plus side of this is I could begin filling the other controller in the future as my storage needs expand.
It would be really cool to use the 2 drive bays in the Xserve Metadata controller for the metadata volumes, but I can see how that would cause problems if the xServe goes down, making the metadata invisible to the fallback MDC. 100% uptime isn't that big of a deal for me, however. As long as the XSAN comes back online safely after the xServe reboots without trouble, I'm OK with such a setup. Have you ever seen this done? It seems a bit of a hack to use anything but fibre channel data. I'd hate to introduce too much complexity just to save some bucks, but it is an intriguing idea and would cost a fraction of a new XSR. It would be fast since the writing the metadata would be local with very little latency.
For this reason, I'm also very interested to find any other simple and less expensive Fibre based storage solutions that could host my metadata as an alternative to full blown XSR for this. There are all kinds of fibre drives out there, but I don't want to waste a valuable fibre switch port just for one drive. All I need is 2 hardware mirrored bays accessible over fibre, preferably sharing the same channel on my switch. Does anyone know where I might find something like this?

  • Issue in picking the daily exchange rate on Inovices.

    Hi All,
I am facing a problem with the daily exchange rate on invoices from a particular sales organization. We have an issue when an invoice is cancelled and then reissued. Currently the new invoice is taking the exchange rate from the original invoice which is incorrect, it should be pick a new exchange rate from the day that the new invoice is created.
Are there any configuration settings for this. Where do i need to check.
Would appreciate your help if you could help me.
    Thanks,
    Mercy

    Hi Mercy,
Go to transaction FBZP ->"paying company codes"-> double click the company code and check if the field
"Do not Post any Exchange Rate Differences" is flagged.
"Do not Post any Exchange Rate Differences
    Use
Ensures that no exchange rate differences are posted by the payment program.
If the indicator is set, no exchange rate difference posting is generated. The amount in the bank posting in local currency does not result from translating the foreign currency amount at the current rate but from the total of the local currency amounts from the settled items.
If the indicator is not set, the difference between the exchange rate at the time of posting and the exchange rate at the time of payment is determined for items which are posted in foreign currency. The payment program uses the translation rate in the currency table in the system for this purpose.
The exchange rate differences which have been determined are automatically posted for each payment. A valid table rate is used when you post to a bank account or a bank sub-account."
I hope I could be of assistance.

  • How do I combine duration with hourly rate?

I've just started using Numbers, and am having trouble recreating my Excel billing sheet. I'm trying to create a spreadsheet which will track the time spent on a task, and then calculate the billable cost for that task based on my hourly rate. So far I've been able to calculate the number of hours/minutes, but can't seem to come up the correct combination of functions to calculate the cost of each task. For example:
    Time in: 3:00 PM
    Time out: 4:30 PM
    Hours: 1h 30m
If my rate is $30 and hour, how would I calculate that for the fourth column? Also, what would be the best format for the hours so that it can calculate properly?
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sure. Take your duration (1h 30m in this case) and use the DUR2HOURS function to turn it into a number.
    D2=1h 30m
    E2= $30
    F2= DUR2HOURS(D2)*E2

  • Daily Currency Rate upload

How can I upload daily currency rate upload to my oracle application from bank or any other system ?
Will it be loaded in oracle GL and then drill down for use in AP and AR ?
We are planning to use multi currency payments, I mean raise an invoice in a foreign currency and pay in foreign currency?so what are the prerequisite set up required for achieving this?
    Thanks

GL_DAILY_RATES_INTERFACE is the interface you use to create, update, and delete daily conversion rates. Customers should use this table to load rates into the GL_DAILY_RATES table.
To use this table to insert/update rates into GL_DAILY_RATES, insert rows into it with a FROM_CURRENCY, a TO_CURRENCY, a FROM_CONVERSION_DATE, a TO_CONVERSION_DATE, a USER_CONVERSION_TYPE, a CONVERSION_RATE, a MODE of 'I', and, optionally, an INVERSE_CONVERSION_RATE. Oracle General Ledger will automatically create rows in GL_DAILY_RATES for each date between the FROM_CONVERSION_DATE and the TO_CONVERSION_DATE, using the specified FROM_CURRENCY, TO_CURRENCY, USER_CONVERSION_TYPE, and CONVERSION_RATE.
