Daily Kernel Panics....Are Apple hiding something?

Guys,
I am getting kernel Panics on almost a daily basis now and i have been following this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=459270&tstart=45
But someone has locked it. Why? Do Apple not want us talking about these things?
I am getting really annoyed at these panics, it can't be bad ram as i have had 2 other MBP's with the same RAM in and never got the panics.
Can you help by looking at these logs?

Hmm. Well unless Mac OS X does things in a completely different way to other unix platforms I've used, it looks like its impossible to tell where the problem is from the stack trace as the kernel appears to have been built with the symbol table stripped out. That's why you're just getting addresses and not the names of functions. Not a very useful thing to do really. I can't tell for sure though as the file(1) command on OSX doesn't seem to report this (stripped/not stripped) either. Also not a very useful thing to do.
I concur with others on this thread that if you've moved the same RAM between 3 systems now, that you might have statically damaged it on the 3rd attempt. You have been using anti-static straps haven't you ???
What about putting the original memory back into the system and running it with that to see if the problem happens again?
Having said that, there's also a chance this isn't memory. Something is trashing memory pointers, yes. But the panic string is suspiciously consistent. It could be either be a buggy device driver, or 3rd party kernel extensions, or some other hardware component on the system that's playing up and feeding the kernel a garbage memory address.
If Apple's hardware tests (described elsewhere in this thread) can't find the problem, tracking this down would be a nightmare, as the memory address causing the panic could get corrupted much earlier and take some time to bubble to the surface. All depends on system usage. The only way to find a problem like that would be for Apple to first custom build you a kernel with the symbol table so they could examine the stack in more detail. And then build further custom instrumented kernels that back track and log where addresses are coming from. It could take several iterations of this process before they found the culprit. It's NOT an easy thing to do. And I don't know if they would even do such a thing unless you're a big corporate account as its very expensive in engineering time to do it. Would be cheaper for them to just give you a new one.
My advice: Run the hardware tests and hope it turns up a bad memory dimm. If it doesn't find anything, return it and get a replacement. If you swap the system and afterwards re-use the same memory for a 4th time, and it does the same thing again, it's your memory that's the problem. Buy another memory dimm and try using it in combination with the other two to eliminate the problem.

  • Kernel panics: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBAttachedSCSI

I've been experiencing a number of kernel panics lately, about once per day (it always seems to happen while I'm at work). The problem report seems to indicate that the com.apple.iokit.IOUSBAttachedSCSI kernel extension is the culprit, leading me to believe that my backup disk is the issue here. All four USB ports on the rear of my iMac are exhausted with the following peripherals.
    - LaCie 2big 4TB external drive, connected via USB 3, configured with RAID 1 and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system, passes the disk utility check
    - Audioengine D1 external DAC
    - Apple Superdrive
    - The last USB port is connected to an APC UPS
I did a bit of googling on this problem and found several people recommending booting in safe mode, removing certain peripherals, uninstalling software for peripherals, etc. Safe mode is not really feasible since this only seems to happen once per day. All of these peripherals are essential to my workflow and none have required the installation of third-party software. I quite frankly find it inexcusable that a USB peripheral would be causing daily kernel panics. Has anyone else experienced these problems and have a potential fix? I should also note that all of these peripherals had been working with my iMac for many months without issue before these kernel panics started. Here's the the system configuration information that is generated in the report sent to Apple:

I suggest you start by removing the LaCie software, which is not needed to use the drive. You have no other software capable of causing panics. Test.
If there's no improvement, remove the two aftermarket memory modules that you installed and test again.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Daily Kernel Panic while web browsing

    Hello,
I'm receiving nearly daily kernel panics while web browsing. At first this was happening in Chrome, so I uninstalled it and went back to using Safari. The problem occurs in Safari as well. It seems to occur most often when I launch additional browser tabs (usually after 3 tabs have opened - happened in both Chrome and Safari)  The latest log is below followed by the output from EtreCheck. Any suggestions?

  • Kernel Panics are back!!

I am on the latest OS and have been experiencing frequent Kernel panics in the last 36 hours after 2 months of fewer kernel panics.
I've disconnected all USB devices from my Apple displays which resolved the problem for a while but now the kernel panics are back.
Only 3rd party hardware is I expanded my 8 core (latest model) Mac Pro from 4GB Apple installed to 12GB OWC RAM.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

I have a very similar problem if not exactly the same. I upgraded from 6gig to 14gig and everything runs fine until I run a program that usues a lot of RAM; then I get a kernel panic. I've been able to duplicate the problem by running rember and when it attempts to load up all the ram to test, BOOM!! kernel panic. I've tested all my ram chips individually in 4gig or less configurations and rember passes the ram with no errors. But as soon as I go 8Gig or more, I get the kernel panics when testing with rember.
Also as a side note, when I tried to use Apple Hardware Test with 14Gig of ram, it wouldn't finish testing and just reset the computer on it's own.
I have searched on google for this problem but there's very little info out there so if anyone else out there has 8 or more gigs of ram, please run rember or something similar to see if you machine has a kernel panic. Thanks for your time.

  • Daily Kernel Panics in Snow Leopard

I'm running a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) and am getting daily (sometimes multiple daily) kernel panics. It's been months since hardware changes (upgraded to 8Gb RAM, quality modules that work fine on other identical Macs). Today is the first day that it's happened more than once, but I hope that's not a sign of things to come...
Here are Pastebin dumps of the Problem Report, System log, and Console log.
I haven't done any serious software updates in a while, but I did set up a Windows XP VM in Parallels Desktop, which has been running during most kernel panics. Maybe bad drivers that are incompatible or need updating? It sometimes runs for hours before a panic, so I don't think running in Safe Mode would be effective (unless I take it home overnight, which I may try).
It seems that my problem is similar to another thread I found on this forum, but mine is a bit different, and I don't run any microsoft hardware (Logitech keyboard and mouse). Anything else anyone notices in the logs that might point to my issue?

Well, see what happens in safe mode. I would also do a precautionary:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Then reboot normally. Safe mode should also clear out some system caches that can cause panics if they become corrupted. But you would need to use a utility like Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.9 to thoroughly clear all caches including user and system caches.

  • My MBP suffers from DAILY "kernel panic" attacks.  This has happened ever since I downloaded Lion.  It appears to happen much more often than the Apple support page suggests it does.  Once the MBP re-boots, it works fine, zips along in all programs.

My MBP suffers from "kernel panic" attacks on an almost daily basis.  This has occured ever since I downloaded Lion.  The Apple support page suggests that this is a rare occurance, but it happens to me almost every day.  Most often, if I let the computer go to sleep or close the lid, I'll find that it won't "wake up" without a complete re-boot.  It always sends a report to Apple and for a couple of days I thought the issue was resolved, but now it's happening again with increasing regularity.  I've reinstalled Lion once already... Any suggestions?

We can't help without the KP. In the meantime, see

  • Daily kernel panics on MacBook Pro

I've just got a new (to me) late 2011 Macbook Pro.  I swapped out the SDD from my old MacBook (Snow Leopard) and updated to Mountain Lion.  All seemed fine for the first few days but I have stared getting kernel panics almost daily where there is a sudden freeze and the system reboots.
I've tried everything short of a complete re-install - disabled almost every third-party starup item and preference pane.  The crash logs always mention the same thing: "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: 1PasswordAgent"
This is a Safari extension used to access passwords and upload to Dropbox (where it stores the data).  From memory Safari has always meen open during a crash but I haven't been actively using 1Password at the time.
I can post a full crash log if that will help.  Thanks.

Thanks Clinton.  Yes, I meant panic log.  Here's the latest (the others are almost identical). Please let me know if there is anything here that shouldn't be on the web, or if you need any other info.

  • Kernel Panics Are Increasing

I've had a high number of Kernel Panics appear within the last 6-8 weeks on my dual Power Mac G5 running Tiger (10.4.11 Build 8S165). I've had my PPC Mac for years and don't recall this many panics ever in a short window of time. Today, I suffered yet another Kernel Panic and had panics happening daily Nov 23, 24, 25th.
Just in my observation, it seems to have gotten worse with the last Apple security update for PPC users. As well, panics occur when I wake my Mac from sleeping after having left Firefox running. I have no Energy Saver Sleep settings enabled and the Options set is to "Allow power button to sleep the computer."
About 2 weeks ago, I encountered this error on startup where my login window would not appear:
"*getty: /dev/console: Operation not supported by device*"
I went through the battery of troubleshooting that the Apple Support site advised, from booting numerous times in safe mode & single-user mode, booting from my original Tiger DVD to run Disk Utility, running fsck -fy, resetting PRAM & NVRAM, repaired my permissions many times, repaired my disk, disconnected all peripherals and insert them one by one. None of these steps resolved it until I performed an Archive and Install (Preserve Users and Network Settings). I have since performed all necessary updates since the reinstall. I did not reset the Cuda/PMU.
Here is the Kernel Panic experienced this morning prior to this post. Does anyone know what this panic means? Btw, I have read a link that someone posted to another site on breaking down the panic. However, that example is not my experience, so it was not much help to me.
    Thanks.

  • Lion, MPB, Kernel Panic, com.apple.driver.CoreStorage

    Greetings
I started to get Kernel Panics (2 today). I pasted in the last one.
The last one happened while Time Machine was running and Spotlight did indexing.
I cannot say for sure that this was the case when the first kernel panic was thrown but I presume it was.
CPU was pretty busy both times and the fans running full speed.
Anyone any thoughts on what's going on here?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Stefan

com.sophos.kext.sav - do you use some AV scanner?
if it is set up to block access to infected files and you have some of them somewhere in downloads or mail attachments - it can try to block spotlight and/or time machine access - thus probably causing deadlock in storage subsystem.
Do you know that for now the only malware for Mac is cured by mac os itself? (there was appropriate update)
all known to me Mac antivirus software scans for Windows viruses, which are of no harm to you.
Anyway, boot from DVD and repair HD
otherwise may be one of your's mounted media is dying - try to see smart status for it, espesially bad blocks remapped
trying to read from scratched DVD wery rarely can cause KP also

  • MacBook Kernel Panic com.apple.driver.AirPort Atheros5424(120.31.1)

    Hi Everyone!
Over the last couple of days my MacBook performs a kernel panic and forces me to restart. I have to restart a couple of times before it works properly again, but sometimes the screen stays black when I turn it on, and it just sits there until I restart it again using the power button.
I've taken dump of the error message in panic.log and it appears that it is the AirPort card causing problems. Can someone confirm this, and suggest what I need to do to resolve this issue as it is becoming quite annoying now. I bought my MacBook back in October last year, so it should still be under warranty.
Heres the relevent content of the panic.log:

    Hey boys and girls...
Well, after reading a few of the posts, I can say this:
    1. I have the N activated from the factory- This is a week old macbook. (Utilities/Network Utility, choose en1 from the dropdown - if you see (802.11 a/b/g/n), you have n installed)
    2. The ONLY airport driver loaded into the kernel is atheros, meaning it MUST be the active driver. See kextstat -l | grep -i airport
    3. I have been monkeying with replacing extensions from previous versions. So far, I have not had a wifi dropout or kernel panic... BUT IT'S EARLY IN MY TESTING.
Here's how I replaced the extension. This is taken directly from a macfixit tutorial. NOTE: 10.4.9 still produced a wifi lockup. I have now used the airport kext (I chose all I found) in 10.4.8 and SO FAR (only tonight) I have not had a dropout. IT COULD STILL HAPPEN THOUGH, SO YMMV:
Reverting to older AirPort kernel extensions [Useful for: slow wireless throughput, router not recognized]
f you are experiencing dire AirPort connectivity issues after a major system update (incremental Mac OS X update or Security Update), and have exhausted all other workarounds, you can try reverting to older version of the AirPort kernel extension via the following steps: [WARNING: This workaround is risky because you should not generally mix and match kernel extensions after updates. You will also lose any AirPort-related refinements brought about by the most recent update and new conflicts can ensue. Still, in a bind, it can restore wireless connectivity where other workarounds fail.]
    1. Download the Mac OS X combo updater directly precedent to your current system version if you applied an incremental Mac OS X update (e.g. Mac OS X 10.4.9), or your current system version if you applied a security update from Apple's download page.
    2. Download and install the shareware application Pacifist
    3. Drag the Mac OS X combo installer package (e.g. MacOSXUpd10.4.9Intel.pkg) onto the Pacifist application icon.
    4. Click the triangle next to System to expand it
    5. Click the triangle next to Library to expand it
    6. Click the triangle next to Extensions to expand it
    7. Scroll down and find the file AppleAirPort.kext. Drag it to your Desktop or another location (you will have to enter your administrator password)
    8. On your Mac OS X startup drive, navigate to /System/Library/Extensions and locate a similarly named file (AppleAirPort.kext). Move it to another location for safe keeping.
    9. Now drag the file from step 7 (the one that you retrieved from the Mac OS X combo install package) into the /System/Library/Extensions directory on your startup, in effect replacing the newer file (installed by the AirPort updater) with and older copy -- you will have to enter an administrator password.
    10. Restart your Mac

  • Daily kernel panics on 11" MacBook Air

    Hi,
I bought an 11" MBA a couple of weeks ago. It came with iWork pre-installed, and the only other thing I did was run the Software Update. A couple of days later, the machine started experiencing kernel panics on a daily basis. They mostly happen when the I open the computer lid, and everyone of them was caused by a different process.
I took the MBA to the Apple store, and they gave me a new one. A couple of days later, the new one started doing the same thing, so I took it back. The Apple store employee kept the MBA overnight, and told me he'll re-install a fresh MacOS X image and run some tests. After I got the MBA back, it worked fine for a couple of days, and then went back to kernel panicking.
I see that some other people have posted similar problems, but didn't see an official reply from Apple.
    Has Apple acknowledged the problem?
If they have, then I'm willing to wait for a fix. If they have not, then this machine is going back for a refund.
    Thanks,
    Dana

Thanks for the replies. I already replaced the machine once, with the same results.
My access point is a a Linksys WRTU54G-TM wireless router (the one used for Tmobile@home).
I looked at the crash report, and every one is different. Here's the latest one:

  • Multiple daily kernel panics since upgrade to Snow Leopard

    Hi, all,
I upgraded to Snow Leopard early last week, and on average have about 3 kernel panics per day. (I haven't had any on this Macbook in the last 6 months of owning it). It's really starting to get on my nerves, and I can't figure out what may be doing it. I've been trying to read up on all the different kernel panic pages listed throughout the forums, but haven't been able to pin it down to anything yet. I figured I'd post the kernel panic report and see if anyone notices anything fishy. Thanks for the help!

Just had my first Snow Leopard kernel panic as well. It looks like the description of the possible cause is identical.
As far as I can see, the main difference (besides the different loaded kexts) is the message: "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: CIJScannerRegist" Does anyone know what that means?

  • OS X 10.4.3 daily Kernel Panics

    Hi,
I am using 10.4.3 and for about a week now, I am experiencing Kernel Panics. They only seem to happen when the computer has been off or in sleep mode for a while. When I start the comp or get out of sleep mode, I get the KP, and I have to perform 1 or 2 restarts.
I tried already all the usual stuff:
    -Run Disc Utility
    -Hardware Test
    -Repair Permissions
    -Clean Caches
I even did an archive&install after all that didn't help, but it didn't help. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks!

oh, and this is the panic.log by the way...

First off, I love the Apple TV, it does exactly what I want but I'm not a happy at the moment. I was streaming music this morning when everything just stopped. Looking at my PowerBook it had a kernel panic and it needed a reboot to fix it. The problem now though is that my Apple TV is no longer responding. The little light on the front just flashes orange to every press of the remote.
The remote is paired to the Apple TV and I don't have another remote so unpairing doesn't appear to be an option.
I've tried pulling the power out of the back of the thing but it doesn't help with the remote being recognised.
    Does anybody have any suggestions.
    Richard

Is AppleTV showing the paired chainlink for the remote? If it's not then try pairing it again. If it's showing it's paired try unpairing it and repairing it.
    To do these tasks:
unpair - hold MENU and the << button on the remote for 6 seconds
pair - hold MENU and the >> button on the remote for 6 seconds
    Hope this helps
