Daily.out file getting huge, help
Hoping to get your help on a space/hard drive issue.
Recently I've developed some space problems on my current macbook pro. When I scan my hard drive it looks like the daily.out log file is now taking up over 4.6GB of space. Wondering why this file is so big and what I can do about it. Any suggestions?
Thanks a bunch-
~greg
/private/var/log/daily.out, is that?
You can just delete it, but it woul be best to take a look into it first to find out what's causing it to be so huge. Mine goes back three months and is only 180k, so something on your machine is writing waaaay too much to the logfile.
Open Applications/Utilities/Console, and pick daily.out from the list on the left. Press "show log list" if you don't have a list. It may take a little while due to the size.
Have a skim through looking for what's doing most of the logs.

Errors filling up daily.out file, streaming audio/vid problems, how to fix
I've been experincing some seemingly random problems with my macbook
1) Hard drive suspiciously full
2) Cursor skipping around the screen when using the track pad, I finally disabled the pad and solely use an external wireless mouse. Occasionally when I turn the computer on the cursor will move around, but I'll be unable to select anything with the left click, right click still works, when I restart again the problem goes away. May or may not be related to other problems
3) Recently have been having problems with streaming video/audio. The videos will load fine, but the audio will start skipping and soon the video will stop. This happens most noticeably with Netflix, which tells me I have an audio problem that requires that I reinstall my "audio card drivers." It also happens with video from vimeo, youtube, and other sources, regardless of whether I'm using Firefox or Safari. On the other hand, songs on itunes work fine. I check my download speed, which is actually above what I'm paying for. My google fu has failed me in determining what the actual problem is.
Today I determined that the daily.out file is 19.6 gb, and when checking the log I found many many many repetitions of the following errors:
"Fri May 4 15:02:00 House kernel[0] <Debug>: IOAudioStream\[0x57b5d00\]::clipIfNecessary() - Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead of last clip position (18,2c44)->(1a,1882)."
Alternating with:
"Fri May 4 14:34:37 House Firewall[62] <Info>: Deny Belkin Router Mo data in from 192.168.2.1:45563 to port 10111 proto=17"
So, I'm thinking my huge daily.out file is related to my audio problems. Any ideas on what's up with my audio/firewall?
Other common errors:
Mon Apr 30 12:16:46 House com.apple.launchd[1] (com.google.keystone.daemon) <Warning>: Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds
Mon Apr 30 12:16:16 House com.apple.launchd.peruser.502[193] (com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.volumeWatcher[57563]) <Warning>: Exited with exit code: 1
Mon Apr 30 12:12:29 House com.apple.launchd[1] (at.obdev.littlesnitchd[57493]) <Warning>: Exited with exit code: 1
I know I can clear the daily.out file, but I'd like to address the problems filling it up so I don't have to keep emptying it. If I have to reinstall my OS, fine, but I'd rather not deal with it if I don't have to. Thanks so much for any ideas.I have a suspicion that the problem is not in the recording device itelf, but rather in the playback-software, which is struggling with an unfamiliar audio format/codec/whatever-it's-called... I opened the file in QuickTime Player 7 (7.6.6) and selected "Show Movie Properties" and it says:
"Video Track: H.264
Sound Track: Integer (Little Endian)"
All current Mac systems support Integer (both Big and Little Endian) audio natively. The fact you can hear anything at all proves that the audio is playing back. The most likely problem would be a malfunction associated with the mic pickup. -
Editing InCopy stories in InDesign layout- InCopy file gets huge
Lately, I am experiencing file size issue. When I go into my layout to check out an InCopy story; check it back in after I do my edits- the file size suddenly gets much larger. It would start of 160k and then becomes 2MB file. Could this be an update issue or am i using "x" amount of conditional text? My editor uses InCopy on a PC and I use a mac.
thanks!Hello, I did try your suggestion and the InCopy file still got larger. I even re-created the layout into a new document. It started out to be okay but I still got the same issue when i check in/out the incopy story.
It is puzzling because I have another layout with about the same amount of layers/conditional text, images and i have no problems so far with that InCopy file getting large. -
Why did my file get huge?
I'm working on a long document in CS5.5 that's mostly text; there are only 4 linked BW images in ~140 pages. I needed to export it for someone who is working in CS4, so following the instructions, I updated to 7.5.2, then exported the IDML. I then saved the document and the file size grew from about 19MB to 103MB.
What's more, the exported IDML file is only 535KB. The raw text file that I placed, which makes up 98% of the InDesign document is 1.1 MB.
Now here's something I find really interesting... I opened the IDML file in CS5.5 and saved the results (which seem to be identical to the original ID document) and it weighs in at only 9MB.
Any thoughts? (Besides WTF?)
Thanks.
[Mac OS X 10.7.3]It worked for me, too, and the file that had grown to 1,766,796 KB went back down to a very reasonable 35,872 KB.
The only (very slight) problem I encountered is that when I re-opened the file, the page numbering had shifted so that page 1 was page 302 (previously the last page in my file), so I had to adjust that.
Everything else seems fine, and I am very grateful.
The only thing I can find for why this happens is that "somehow" the file gets corrupted and that doing the IDML export fixes it. -
Copying multiple objects-file getting huge
Hello,
First of all im new to Illustrator. Im working on a project for print that has become rather huge. Im creating map of a disc golf course and decided to try it out in Illustrator instead of photoshop thinking I can always increase the print size without losing quality if need be. I started with a few basic items on multiple layers for grass, lakes, buildings, etc. and then began to create a graphic that I could copy multiple times throughout the image to represent trees. Everything went well at first but the file size has become so huge and my computer reduced to a crawl. Im only about halfway done now and dont know what I can do to finish the project. Questions:
- Is there a more efficient way to copy and paste a vector graphic? Or maybe reduce the load of each of these trees? Right now they are made with the pen tool and some shading with paintbrush.
- My other thought is maybe break my drawing into 4 tiles and work or each seperate and maybe join in photoshop later. Is there any way to select and save portions of the image and preserve the layers so I can continue working with the image as 4 seperate files?
- If I do seperate them what would be the best method to rejoin for print. There may be a need to print this at 2x3 feet. Im sure if I did it in Photoshop I may run into a huge filesize again just to get a good quality image for a 2x3.
heres a shot from early on to give you an idea
Thanks,
BradIf you are bringing artwork from Photoshop into Illustrator, save the artwork as a PSD and use File > Place to import it, making sure that Link is checked in the File dialogue.
If you intend to use an object or image several times, consider making it a Symbol. Just click the New Symbol button at the bottom of the Symbols panel. If you are using a placed image, fist click on Embed in the Control panel at the top of the screen before making the symbol. Artwork used for symbols is stored only once in the Illustrator file.
If you don’t need to import the Illustrator file into another program later, such as InDesign, then do a Save As and turn off the Create PDF Compatible File. With the option on Illustrator saves both the editable Illustrator file and a high resolution PDF with all artwork embedded. With the option off files can be dramatically smaller. -
Pdf file gets huge when attached to an e-mail
A very strange problem. Yesterday, I received an e-mail with a pdf attachment that was 10MB. When I saved the attachement to a fold, it became 9.6kb. I created a new e-mail and attched the smaller saved version of the pdf. It showed as 10MB in the e-mail. The same thing happened to another e-mail pdf attachment that I received this morning. I even inserted an older pdf file from my computer into a new e-mail. Same thing. This is making it very difficult to send e-mails with pdf attachment, as they are too large for some to receive. the sender of the original e-mail is also seeing it in the sent e-mail as 10 MB.
I have windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP 3; Acrobat reader 9.3First of all: what e-mail client are you using?
Do you use Adobe Reader to send the PDF file, or you simply attach the PDF to a message you are composing? That message, what format is it - plain text, HTML, RTF?
Anyway, I have a very hard time to understand how a file of 9.6KB can show up more than a 1000 times larger (10MB) as a PDF attachment! Does your e-mail client give the exact size of the attachment, additionally to the total size of the message? -
Mackeeper and daily.out log file
This is not a question, but a tutorial garnered bits and pieces from the communtiy.
If you have downloaded Mackeeper, you should check your daily.out file. It continues to try to run every 10 sec. even when you have trashed it (via their uninstall instructions) and will fill up that file over time. ( 10.4 gigs in my case on the daily.out log file....).
Disclaimer note: I am using OSX 10.6.7 but this should work for most OSX systems with this bug.
I recently found this recurring cycle.

....and could only see it happening by watching it log every 10 sec. in the Mac Console.app. (Was not registering in Activity Monitor.app). This apparently has been going on for over 2 years even though I thought I had uninstalled Mackeeper via their own instructions.
This has the unfortunate consequence of filling up your daily.out log over time (mine was at 10.3 gigabytes after a little over 2 years... imagine infinite pages upon pages of the same stupid recurring message).
If you have ever downloaded MacKeeper, I strongly suggest you view your daily.out log file via Console.app. You can see Mackeeper working simply by viewing “All Messeages” in Console if it’s still running... or trying to run (every 10 sec.), that is the problem, and follow carefully all the steps listed here: http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/ .Use the 2nd portion of the tutorial. Do not trust that by simply dragging and dropping the app. file into trash you have gotten rid of this beast (even though Mackeeper says you can).
Ironically, I found this anomaly using the freeware GrandPerspective (1.5.1) http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/ and noticed a huge, very pretty, yet clear (not subdivided) block in the colored rectangles right away (the software was so intuitive, I simply clicked the block and then the “Reveal” button) and saw that my daily.out file (a file I didn’t even know I had) was at 10.3 gigs.
The highlighted large light yellow area is my daily.out log file.
(Note: you can give a donation to sourceforge.net if you think it helped you.) I find it ironic simply because I’m using freeware to free up hard disk space and speed up the computer, by getting rid of malware that claimed to do the same (Mackeeper) for a fee.
Onward... You then need to go into terminal (something I’ve never done before... just be careful and unintimidated) and follow these instructions to delete or empty your daily.out log file. (cannot be done with a simple drag and drop to trash). I found terminal instructions for deleting (not harmful and will reconstruct) or emptying the daily.out files here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1229894
After a try or two, this did not work for me somehow... (user error?) but this did...
Some files are locked. In order to delete locked files, go to Apps/Utilities/Terminal, use Terminal command line : sudo rm -rf ...add one space after “f” then drag the file “daily.out” that grandperspective “revealed” into the terminal, hit “return/enter” type admin. password. Hit “return” again.
The files should delete. You will see more HD space (in my case 10.3 gigs... small these days perhaps, but can throw an almost full HD off). The daily.out log file should reconstruct on your mac’s next scheduled daily. Obviously, you should read your daily.out log file via Console.app first before delete to determine the problem.
Hope this helps.
(Disclaimer: I don't work for sourceforge, I am a mere musician trying to get the job done.) Thanks to all the other posters.Hmm. So your weekly and monthly clean-ups are running normally - I had thought there might be something wrong with them. It seems to be alot of kernel debugging entries that are making it grow so much. Did you deliberately do something to turn it on? You could try, in terminal,
sudo rm /var/log/daily.out
- it will ask for your admin password to confirm it. Then maybe do a system shutdown/restart to see if that kills the debugger logging. I don't know how to turn it off. -
Yesterday I ran the program GrandPerspective and found that the document daily.out is currently 315.28 GB and eating up the majority of my HD space. Having read a number of posts, I reviewed the daily.out log in the console. It appears to date back a number of years although I have only had this iMac since August 2010. I believe from what I have read that I can delete this log, but would like confirmation. I would welcome the help with this situation. Thanks. [Note: If it is relavent, I only started using Time Machine last month. Prior to that, I was doing doing all my backups with Retrospect.)

Thanks, Mark. I will remove Daily.Out. I don't run a maintenance program. However, I periodically run the Repair Disk Permissions, and even more rarely run Repair Disk. Do either of these present a problem?
My comment on this is you should let the periodic daily, weekly, monthly run every once in a while. Because you haven't been running them is why you daily.out log got as large as it did. One of the jobs of the maintenance tasks is to rotate certain log files, keeping a few of the most recent compressed, and to minimize the size of others specifically from growing too large.
As for running repair permissions vs. repair disk, IMO you have your priorities backwords. Repair permissions is generally never needed. On the other hand it is best to more often verify your drives before any potential disk errors get compounded by further disk errors.
Mark Jalbert wrote:
No, neither has any effect on daily.out. daily.out contains all the output from the shell scripts in the /etc/periodic/daily folder. Periodic runs these scripts and then send the output to daily.out. In any case it is unusual that your daily.out file has grow so large.
Not unusual if you never do the periodic maintenance as I just said above. -

Well, iCloud has nothing to do with this.
Do you have the built-in backup function Time Machine running on your Mac?

Anyone know how to drag/drop in such a case, or otherwise copy files from MacAir to a shared drive (which I do not believe is on a Mac, not sure if that matters).
Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance

Hard drive full! Huge nohup.out file?
I am a new mac user and have had my imac since December 06, so not very long. I mainly use my mac to edit video and found that this took up a large part of my 250GB hard drive. I deleted alot of this and freed up a huge amount of space.
Since this clear up I have only installed a few applications such as iZoom and Office, only a few GB. However, everytime I have rebooted my mac my hard drive has filled up more and more. I am now left with no free space, with messages appearing within a number of programs saying my disc drive is full. I can't even save images to my desktop.
I went through a few interent forums for help and downloaded a program called WhatSize to try and locate any large files on my mac. What I found was that my music and video folders were about 5/6 GB each, which I expected. Other than this my documents folder was around 2GB. However, at the top of the list I had a huge file called nohup.out weighing in at 198GB. Is this the problem and the file that is taking up all my hard drive?. Even with all my software and documents, there is no way they all add up to 250GB.
I couldnt find any information on the net about this nohup.out file so I have no idea if this file size is usual or not. Can I delete this file to free up space or will this corrupt my system? Like I said I am a fairly new mac user so I have no idea about any of these sort of files.
Any help with this issue will be much appreciated!
Cheers,
DuncanHi, cheers for getting back to me. I looked through some of the google searches but really couldn't understand it, so seeing as you said you couldn't find this nohup.out file on your system I decided to just delete it. At first it wouldn't let me delete it, but a quick restart of the system and it went fine.
So I now have 198GB free on my 250GB hard drive, which is shown when I click the "Get Info" option from the hard drive icon on my dektop. However, underneath this icon it says that I only have 33GB free, as if the icon hasn't updated. I tried restating to get it to update but it has remained the same. Is there anything I can do to correct/update this?
Thanks for all your help,
Duncan -
