Daisy chain an ipod to Ext Drive in a MBA?

I have a G-Drive with 2 firewire and 1 usb ports. The MBA has -as we all know-only one usb port.
So I wonder if I could daisy chain my devices this way:
MBA---(usb cable)---G-Drive---(firewire ipod cable)---iPod
....Is that possible??? (I didnt try it because I couldnt find my FW ipod cable yet...)
Thanks in advance!

Thank you Neil for your answer. Now do you find a way to sync an iPod and an ext drive in the MBA? I've tried wireless but it takes an eternity...
Thanks.

  • Can't daisy chain Thunderbolt 1 and 2 drives

I have a Mac Mini server (mid 2011) with a Pegasus R4 connected via Thunderbolt that has been running fine. The Mini is running Lion Server.
Just recently I got a Lacie 2big drive with Thunderbolt 2. I assumed that TB2 was backwards compatible so daisy chaining the Lacie to the Pegasus wouldn't be an issue. But when I do so, the Lacie doesn't mount and Disk Utility cannot see it.
However, if I connect the Lacie directly to the Mini it mounts and works fine. So then I tried connecting the Pegasus to the Lacie. But now the Pegasus doesn't mount and can't be seen by Disk Utility or Promise Utility.
So, is the problem trying to daisy chain TB1 and TB2 devices together? Or is it the Mini? Or is it Lion?
    Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply. The Pegasus is over 3 years old and I have never updated the firmware. I will do so.
However, I got everything to work. The one I thing I didn't try was rebooting with both drives daisy chained and turned on. This did it. I restarted many times but each time was with only one of the drives connected. Not sure why a reboot is necessary for the daisy chained device to be visible.

  • Daisy chaining two Lacie Firewire 800 drives on a G%

I've had one external drive working perfectly for months. Tried to daisy chain a second drive and can't get the second drive to register on my desktop. Support said to reboot. My system freezes upon shutting down. If I restart with the two connected, neither drives shows and my Eye TV shuts down. As soon as I disconnect the second drive, Eye TV works and the one drive appears. Any suggestions? Apple Care had none except purchasing a port that would handle firewire 800. How trustworthy would that be?

I've tried daisychaining a new d2 Big Disk Extreme FW800 and a d2 FW800 drive on my G5's FW 800 bus. I can't copy files from one drive to the other without an Error -36 code. I CAN copy to and from the drives to the Mac at nice fast speeds with no errors. Both LaCie drives are updated to their latest firmware, respectively.
The few times that I was able to copy a small folder from the d2 to the Big Disk, it took forever.
As a result of this thread, I'm now awaiting the delivery of a Belkin FW800 3 port hub. I hope this will clear up this issue, as I need to be able to move data between the two drives (both of which passed their tests via Disk Utility, Drive Genius, and DiskWarrior in flying colors).
I have noticed the older d2 FW800 has a lower firmware number than the Big Disk, however, the LaCie Update Tool reports that each drive is at its current appropriate firmware number. And yes, I ran the Update Tool independently on each drive, while the other was unmounted and unplugged.
    Any advice?

can i daisy chain (firewire a 1 TB d2 la cie through the 350) and still see both and access from network in finder???
Sorry, but I really don't think this is something that the TC's USB port & File Sharing function would be able to support.
Have you tried this combination connected directly to your computer? ... and did it work?

  • USB no longer recognised for IPOD or ext drive

I recently recieved a 5th Gen IPOD. I have installed the software that came with the unit but I cannot see the IPOD. When I check the Device Manager I see an "Unknown Device". Also I can now no longer see my external USB backup drive. It also has "Unknown Device" instead of Mass Storage Device. When I go to reinstall either of these items I get an error:
"The Installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance"
I have removed all usb refs in the Dev Manager and restarted. I have removed these in Safe Mode and restarted. Each time I get the same Unknow Device. My setup is:
    Windows 2000 pro, SP4
    2.4GHz P4 on a Gigabyte board
    512 Ram
Previous to the ipod install my backup drive worked perfectly. It seems like my USB drivers have somehow been corrupted.
I have tired forcing these in as Microsoft Mass Storage Devices but I still get the yellow exclamation mark.
I have also tried to access a 256Mb MP3 player but I get the same error.
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks
New IPOD user but getting frustrated.

I got the following reply from Billyd at www.everythingusb.com
"Turn the PC off for awhile - about 30 minutes. Unplug it from the wall too. After the 30 minutes are up, open the case and remove the motherboard battery for a few seconds. Put it back in and reboot.
If you know how to get into BIOS setup, do that and disable Legacy USB. If you're overclocking, don't.
Next, try a Safe Mode cleanup:
    http://tinyurl.com/2fwb"
After scouring the web for a solution and reinstalling my OS, the above solution worked. I have not reinstalled my IPOD yet, want to get everything back up and running, then ghost first. My external hd was recognised straight away and I my machine recognises my 256mb mp3 players.
Also found one of the ground connectors for my front usb was very loose. This may have caused the initial usb issue by connecting my ipod to this usb port. Will see how it goes.

  • Daisy chain two external drives via Firewire, then connect one via USB to the TC?

    Hi,
I have two external drives that have both Firewire and USB ports. My 1st generation 500 gb Time Capsule (maybe all of them?) only has USB ports so up til now, I have connected one or the other drive via USB. (I've tried to connect both to a powered USB hub but one drive has problems showing up. At this point I only use the one drive that shows up and connect it directly with no hub to the Time Capsue.)
My question is: Can I daisy chain the two drives via Firewire and then connect one of them (probably the one that has no problems connecting with USB) to the Time Capsule via USB?
    Second, somewhat-related problem...
I don't know why one drive isn't connecting very well when directly connected to the Time Capsule. Both are Fantom drives. One is a 1TB, the one that has prblems connecting is a 250GB. I've tried connecting directly or through a powered hub. The 1B has no problems, the 250 gb won't show up most of the time and disconnects itself fairly quickly if it does connect. I've switched cables; that hasn't helped. The 1TB stays connected most of the time but sometimes it disconnects too. I suspect the Time Capsule just isn't able to deal with external drives so I don't puch it. It would be nice to be able to have both drives accessable through the TC though.
    Thanks for any help.
    Cheers,
    John

Doing some experimentation, connecting the drives directly to the MBP:
    - Neither of the two drives Firewire daisy-chained and going through the powered USB hub connected to the MBP mount. I was using old aliases on desktop.*They don't show up on network otherwise. (Each drive self-mounts with both Firewire and USB direct connections.)
*Even after making new aliases, neither drive will mount using their new aliases when directly connected (not through hub) with USB or Firewire (and Thunderbolt adapter.) That's weird.
    - Both the 240 gb and the 1TB drives going through powered hub connected to MBP mount by themselves.
    - Two drives daisy-chained via Firewire and one drive connected to the MBP via Firewire (and Thunderbolt adapter) self-mount. No surprise there but that doesn't help me as I want to have the drives further away from the MBP and connected to the Time Capsule, which doesn't have a Firewire port anyway...
    - All of the USB and the Firewire cables work as does the Thunderbolt adapter. I tested them.
I wonder.... I have a Firewire to what appears to be an Ethernet connector. I wonder if that would be any good. I'm afraid to try it though...

  • Daisy-chain a thunderbolt external drive & thunderbolt display?

Although you can't daisy chain multiple thunderbolt displays to the new (mid 2011) Air's are you able to connect a thunderbolt display and daisy chain a thunderbolt external hard drive?

    1. As stated in the questions and answers section of the link you posted, no.
    2. Connect it to the MacBook Pro, start File Sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences, and use the Connect to Server command in the Finder's Go menu on the iMac.

  • How do I Daisy Chain external Firewire drives

Sorry if this seems a dumb question but.....
I want to add another External Hard Drive as my current one is starting to get full, I'm using a Western Digital FireWire 800 currently and I believe that I can add another External FireWire 800 drive by daisy chaining it with the existing drive using a FW800 connector. Is this correct?
Will it just appear on the desktop as another drive to which I can save files etc or do I have to do anything else?
Once again sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but I just want to make sure I don't do anything that will cause me problems later down the line.

Yes, as long as drive 1 has two sockets, just plug drive 2 into drive 1 and drive 1 into the computer and it all works seamlessly; both appear on the desktop just as if they were plugged into separate sockets. Of course drive 1 must be powered, or drive 2 won't appear.

  • Cannot Daisy Chain My External Hard Drives on Macbook Pro Unibody

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro 13.3.  I am trying to daisy chain my 2 external hard drive enclosures to my firewire 800 port.  The enclosures are manufactured by Vantec, model Nextar 3.  Both devices have 2 firewire 400/800 ports and they advertise that they are able to be daisy chained.
My issue is:  I hook one to the other and power them both on and nothing seems to happen.  I can power one up and the drive will show up on my desktop, but when I power the second drive up, I get the pop up screen saying I have disconnected my device without properly shutting it down, and then the drive is gone.  I have tried connecting them several different ways.  Im not sure if its the external enclosures, if there is a process I'm supposed to follow, of if the Macbook Pro Unibody does not support daisy chaining firewire 800 devices.
Please, if anybody has had the same experience and has been able to fix it, let me know.  I am in need of some serious hard drive spance and am going to return both enclosures if I cannot get them to work.
    Thank you.

    I'm having the same issue.
I'v also found that I am able to daisy chain other drives throught the vantec drives.
And that, when  I get the pop up screen saying I have disconnected my device without properly shutting it down, and the drive is gone. I'm only able to remount the drive after restarting the computer while the drive is conected and powered. It won't apear on other computers untill the reboot sequence is preformed.
    Strange,
Let me knwo if you've found a solution.
    thanks,

  • How many FW devices can you daisy chain?

Have a new iMac w/ one FW800 port. Need to daisy chain eight FW800 hard drives, two FW400 hard drives, and one FW400 DigiDesign Digi002 ProTools mixing board. I was planning on daisy chaining all the FW800 drives then coming out of the last of those with a FW800 to FW400 cable into the first FW400 drive, daisy chaining to the 2nd FW400 drive, then daisy chain from it into the FW400 ProTools mixing board. I know that's a lot of chaining but at the moment those are the devices I have to work with. I have A LOT of video and audio information I need to retain. Seems to me that I read somewhere about a maximum length a firewire daisy chain could be but haven't found any more reference to it when I just looked. All of the devices have their own power supplies so I don't believe they will be drawing much, if any power from the chain. Anybody know of any problems with this setup?

    Thanks for the info.
I've tried several scenarios and combinations what I've found is that I can put all the FW800 drives in a daisy chain then put the 1st FW400 drive in and lastly the Digi002 mixing board (which is FW400). When I try to add to this any more drives I get unpredictable results. I have therefore bough another 2TB external drive and hooked it up through USB 2.0 and copied many files to it from the older FW400 drives as well as the only FW800 drive that ever game me headaches. It should be noted that it is a Western Digital My Book drive. It seems like it would be a great drive having FW800, FW400, and USB 2.0 connections. In practice, however, I have had LOTS of problems both on my Macs and PCs I tried using it on. I recommend strongly that you avoid using any MY Book drives. I'm having better luck with practically any other manufacturer, including what I would normally consider no names like SimpleTech and Buffalo. Those drives seem much more stable.

  • Firewire daisy-chain trouble with Leopard. Will a hub help?

I cannot get reliable daisy-chaining of my external Firewire drives under Leopard. A Firewire drive directly attached to computer will work, but subsequent daisy-chains to this drive will not mount more than half the time. I ended up getting corruption of 2 drives: there appears to sometimes be Spotlight crashes/Finder crashes, and Disk Utility repair failure after a mount fails.
I have nine FW drives, and I like to keep bootable clones of all 3 of my Macs with the current system and a couple of generations back. Being able to attach only one drive to my 12" G4 Powerbook 1.5GHz makes cloning difficult (I can only clone the internal drive using my Powerbook). If I get a Firewire hub, will my FW connection then be reliable? There seems to be a problem in Leopard as I don't get daisy-chain problems using the same drives under Tiger. The drive activity lights don't even flash when the daisy-chained drive mounts fail under Leopard, so it appears that Leopard is making no attempt to mount the drives. Why would this be? Yet sometimes daisy-chain drives have mounted just fine.
Makes/models I have tried: Smartdisk Firelite (were sold by Apple), Maxtor OneTouch III, Seagate FreeAgent Pro, and Iomega Black series. I tried various cables.
Does anyone know what the difference is, from a hardware standpoint, between daisy-chain vs. using a Firewire hub. Would there be an inherent difference using a hub?
Are the "hubs" with Mac Mini footprints actually true hubs or are they daisy-chains? How about FW drives with built-in FW "hubs": are THEY actually a true hub or a daisy-chain in disguise? (Sorry if these questions seem stupid.) Recommendations for a hub?

Sorry just noticed I've probably posted this under the wrong forum header

  • FireWire 800 Daisy Chain Problem

Hello everyone, I have three firewire drives. Two 2TB 3.5" drives and one 2.5" 1TB drive. All three are connected to my MacBook Pro 13" via the one firewire port in a daisy chain. I usually always have the 3.5" disk connected. When I add the portable drive to the daisy chain, it crashes the desktop drive, and I get the "do not disconnect drives without ejecting" message. Is this normal? I am thinking of purchasing the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter, only to avoid the crashes of the other drives in the Daisy chain.
My Mac is an early 2011 13" MacBook Pro i5 2.3GHz with 16GB RAM.
Thank you for your help in advance

    Sorry for my late answer.
    The disc has 2 FW800 and 1 USB2.
If you buy a TB to FW800 you should give to the disc more power from the TB port.
If you connect the disc with USB you could use a special cable with 2 plugs on one side and one smal USB plug on the other.  This cable is designed to give to one disc the pover grom 2 USB ports but one of the 2 can also be connected to an USB power supply, so ytou will give to the disc more power....   of copurse with USB you have a lower speed.
If you have Thunderbolt you should try to use TB discs. I know they are expensive but there is a trick which I like to use... have a look here  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Aa3BXmQVpc

  • Daisy-chaining firewire 400 and firewire 800?

I would like to daisy-chain two Western Digital MyBook Pros to a Macbook:
    - FW 400 from Macbook to first drive
    - FW 800 between the drives
Would this work or not? I have one of those, they have 2 x FW 800, 1 x FW 400, 1 x USB at back.
    (If not, I'll buy a 'Premium' which has 2 x FW 400, and 1 x USB..)

    JoeyR wrote:
I'm not sure if the hardware in the first drive, that's connected by firewire 400 is "smart" enough to jump the data over to the FW800 connectors for daisy chaining.
Just pulled this from the WD site. I would say this indicates it would work. You won't get more speed but they should work daisy chained. This indicates the drive is smart enough to do this.
+Question: Will Western Digital FireWire 400 (1394a) external hard drives work connected to a FireWire 800 (1394b) port?+
+Answer: The FireWire 800 Specification (1394b) states that FireWire 400 devices will work while connected to a FireWire 800 (1394b) port. The FireWire 400 cable (4-6 pin or 6-6 pin) will not connect to a FireWire 800 port (9 pin) therefore you will need to connect the hard drive using a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable (1394a to 1394b cable). These cables are available at most computer stores.+

  • Fw800 daisy chain problems - crashing MBP

I just had two massive crashes on a 6-month old MCP with new external FW800 drives daisy-chained.  The first crash happened when I tried to hook and "old" (5 years) FW400 hard drive within the daisy-chain of newer FW800 hard drives.  The second happened when all 3 of my new (8-months old) FW800 drives were connected:  one of the drives just spun its wheels and never showed any data.  After shutdown / reboot it's ok - but there are 1.3TB of info on it.
Questions:  How many FW800 drives can you daisy-chain out of the one FW800 bus on a MacBook Pro?
Or is it a length of cable issue?  Or is hooking up the older FW400 into the chain the problem?
I researched online and found multiple posts that said you can daisy-chain Sixty-Three hard drives.  This sounds impossible and unbelievable given what I have just experience with THREE hard drives.

The problem is that this could be tough to troubleshoot if it is a power supply, as the offending drive will attempt to pull the juice it needs to keep running from the FireWire bus.

  • Unusual behaviours since daisy chaining a new external hd

    Hi
my mac has worked flawlessly since i got it over 3 & 1/2 years ago.
I added a new external hd by daisy chain fire wire last week & suddenly
odd behaviours are occuring for the first time ever all in the space of a week.
    1. Frozen mouse - unable to use the pointer - fixed by un/re pluging mouse.
    2. corrupted finder icons one or two - fixed by re-starting.
    3. external hd icon unmounting when i do an action in a running app,
eg: turned a page in acrobat reader - fixed by restarting external hd.
    4. put to sleep manually - black screen but computor & external hds still
'not asleep' - couldnt get the desk top screen to appear - fixed by re
    booting with external side button.
A sense of things coming abit undone !
I want to trouble shoot this before it gets out of hand & i want to avoid causing any damage to my internal hardware.
Could anyone provide me with some kind of diagnosis & insight ?
    thanks
    d

    hi
okay - in response to posts so far......
    1. i havent used it yet with fcp
    2. it is running off its own power supply, not off the fire wire cable.
    3. i am not using any hub - its daisyed into the first external hd which is then
linked to the emac by fire wire. The chain is firewire 400 cable in all
    instances.
Both external hds have their own seperate power supply .
    JMVP WROTE:
"....This is especially true if the daisy-chained drive is drawing power through the Firewire cable. Daisy-chaining data through independently-powered drives is known to be iffy."
So what you're suggesting is daisychaining par-se is a no no.
Both in the case of the device powered via the firewire
cable AND if it's independantly powered.
Does this mean DAISY = DANGER ?
The verdict so far is that i should abandon daisy chains and switch to fire wire hubs....or direct seperate inputs into the emac.........
Aside from a debate about the pros & cons of the Daisy.........
i'm open to other trouble shooting lines of thought to my situation.
    thanks
