Daisy chain time machine

I have a firewire 800 external hdd as my time machine drive, and now want to add another fw800 external drive to my system.
I will have to daisy chain them, and would like to ask will time machine still back-up the second daisy chained drive.
So my system would be iMac cabled to time machine and time machine cabled to second drive.

Yes TM will back up up the second external drive however if for some reason you don't want to back up some folders, files or drives in TM Preferences just choose those and they will not be backed up.

Roger

  • Can you daisy chain time capsule??

A while back I tried to daisy chain 2 lacie drives off of airport and that didn't work. 2 questions:
1/from what I have read I can connect this to an airport extreme and that will work just like my lacie does now...
2/Does anyone know if I would be able to use all 3??
    Thank you

I'll my 2cents worth here as there's some assumptions being made in these responses that IMO are misleading the author of this thread.
    1. Apple fully supports using Time Machine with the internal HDD located in the Time Capsule.
    2. It's a stretch to assume Time Machine can also safely (and with Apple's full support) also support USB AirDisk(s) attached to the Time Capsule. Recall that the earlier version of Time Capsule was the AEBS (10/100 or GbE) supported AirDisk(s) but their use with Time Machine was pulled from Leopard just a week before Leopard was released on Oct 26, 2007. At this time Apple has not made public what their future position is or will be in bringing back this feature.
So for those that are thinking of using USB drive(s) with Time Capsule and hoping to use them with Time Machine I say be forewarned or at least wait for Apple to publically announce support for them before investing in the Time Capsule.

  • Can I use back to my mac to access two daisy chained time capsules running on my network alone or do I also need a mac running on the same network?

I have a DSL modem router (HUWAI ECHO LIFE 520) with uPNP enabled. The first time capsule´s wan is connected to that router the second time capsules wan is connected to the first time capsules lAN. The router looks at the first time capsule as DMZ and passes traffic on the public IP through to it. There are airport expressses either end of the chain. The network works a charm. I would like to have both time capsules visible through Back to My Mac, which isn´t currently working. Back to My Mac is activated on all devices involved. What else to try?
    Arved

Both TC should be in bridge mode. Is that what you have done? You cannot use the TC in router mode as it will cause double NAT problems.
Can you access one of the TC? Or do both fail to show up?

  • Problem with daisy chaining HDDs and Time Machine

I have purchased 2 WD My Passport Studio FireWire 2TB HDDs which I have daisy chained to my MacBook Pro.  One I have assigned to be the Time Machine backup the other as an additional data drive.  Both are formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  I setup Time Machine to backup both the internal and external drive.  When I set it up everything looked OK in Time Machine Preferences, but the daisy chained data drive displayed on the desktop with the Time Machine backup logo and the backup drive displayed as a standard FireWire data drive. However the backup worked successfully and backed everything up to the correct backup drive.
I have since established the following:
    1.  If both drives are daisy chained and then plugged in, the data drive shows up with the backup icon and the backup drive shows as a data drive, but Time Machine backs up to the correct drive.  This is the case regardless of what order the drives are daisy chained.
    2.  If the backup drive is plugged in on its own it shows up correctly with the backup drive icon.  If the data drive is then daisy chained to the backup drive both drives show up as backup drives.  Time Machine backs up to the correct backup drive.
    3. If the data drive is plugged in on its own it shows up incorrectly as the backup drive.  If the backup drive is then daisy chained to the data drive the backup drive shows as a normal FireWire data drive. But Time Machine still backs up to the correct drive.  Exactly the same as case 1 but the drives have been daisy chained after connecting to the MacBook Pro and the result is the same.
    4. However if the data drive is plugged in on its own, showing up as the backup drive, Time Machine backs up to the data drive incorrectly.
The first three points are just annoying as the drive icons do not display correctly, although it does indicate to me that Time Machine is confused.  But what I don't like is the fact that I can't just use the external data drive without the backup drive being present.
How do I overcome this problem?

Launch Disk Utility and select one of the volumes in question. Click the Info button in the toolbar. In the Information window that opens, note the Universal Unique Identifier. Do the same with the other volume. Are the identifiers the same?

  • Can I daisy chain macs to act as time machines?

Say I have a lab of macs numbered between 1 - 16. All of these macs are connected via a switch so they can all see each other.
What I am thinking is to partition the HDD on every mac so that there are 2 partitions each. One of the partitions will be for the OS and the local files and the other will be for the back up of another mac. Doing it this way I was hoping to daisy chain them
    Mac ID#
    Partition 1
    Partition 2
    1
    Local 1
    16's Local
    2
    Local 2
    1's Local
    3
    Local 3
    2's Local
    4
    Local 4
    3's Local
    5
    Local 5
    4's Local
    6
    Local 6
    5's Local
    16
    Local 16
    15's Local
I was thinking of making the 2nd partition of each mac as a time machine target and having it sync the files nightly.
The reason for this is due to the amount of data generated on each mac that getting a dedicated backup server would be too expensive (I would need ~7 TB) for my budget ($0).
Is this possible? Is there a better way?

I don't know, I presume you would share the 2nd partition so the other Mac could see it. Unless someone knows a definite answer then you can only try it and see what happens.
One problem I see is not the Macs but the switch, inexpensive switches generally don't have an ASIC per port, this would reduce the bandwidth the switch could handle at any one time. The more expensive switches I used to work with had one ASIC per 2 ports or one on each port but they were expensive, probably the same price as  a backup system you cannot afford.
Hope someone as a definitive answer for you.

  • I have a Mac Pro tower with two internal Hard Discs, each one 2TB. I purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. But it does not allow me to back up because it says there is not enough back up space available. Between the two HDs there are 3.3TBs. Can I daisy chain TC?

I have a Mac Pro tower (OSX version 10.6.3) with two internal Hard Drives, each one 2TB.
I purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. But cannot back up because it tells me there is not enough space.
I have more than 3Tbs to store to the new TC.
Can I daisy chain two TCs to store the 4TBs?
How can I back up only the internal HD that is already full, without backing up the other one?
How can I do back up using Time Machine to back up the 3.5Tbs?
Do I need to purchase another external HD (that is not TC) to be able to back up all of my photos?

Can I daisy chain two TCs to store the 4TBs?
No, you cannot link to produce a single large partition.
But you can have two separate backup jobs.. and use each partition. That is hard on TM but you can easily get a different backup software for it.
How can I back up only the internal HD that is already full, without backing up the other one?
In TM you do a different setup and exclude the other drive.
But it is better to use an alternative software IMHO.
How can I do back up using Time Machine to back up the 3.5Tbs?
You would need to use a network drive of more than 4TB .. it would also take forever. This is just wrong way to do it. Although you can buy a NAS that will work with Time Machine and load it with disks 16TB is possible.. if you can get a second mortgage.. the fragile nature of TM on 3rd party devices.. would leave me in cold sweat if anything went wrong.
TM is excellent at keeping incremental backups of files that keep changing.. as such you should use TM to backup your OS disk and main user directory.. exclude all files and directories that never change. Back them up separately.
Do I need to purchase another external HD (that is not TC) to be able to back up all of my photos?
Yes, that is a much better idea. You want to store photos safely and you want to store them in multiple places. If you have multiple TB of photos, dedicate a couple of disks to the backup. ie have at least two copies.. not in backup format.. in straight copy format if possible.. so you can keep one of the disks offsite.
I would be using your MacPro internal disk access, to place the disk onto sata bus and do the copy disk to disk direct. Or even buy esata card.. or sata to esata converter cable so you can use esata box. That will beat any other transfer speed except thunderbolt for which you would need third mortgage. (The MORT in mortgage is significant).
The great jurist Sir Edward Coke, who lived from 1552 to 1634, has explained why the term mortgage comes from the Old French words mort, "dead," and gage, "pledge." It seemed to him that it had to do with the doubtfulness of whether or not the mortgagor will pay the debt.

  • Daisy Chain Snow to Time Capsule

A few months ago I got a new Time Capsule and retired my trusty old Snow ABS. I took the recommendation and set up WPA security. The Snow was WEP. Well a few days ago I had to bring out a nice old G3 iBook (late-model) for a project and when I tried to connect it to the TC I did not get the WPA option. I dug through the forums and knowledge base and understand there should be an upgrade. Well I tired everything, including re-installing 10.3.2 then updating back to 10.3.9. Then I tried re-installing and sticking with 10.3.2 and upgrading just the Airport software to 4.2. Etc, etc, etc. and I cannot get the iBook G3 to use WPA.
Sooo, I broke out the Snow and daisy chained it to one of the <...> ports on the time capsule. The old G3 sees the Snow but I cannot get it to connect to the internet.
The Airport setup software on the iBook 10.3.9 will not update it and the MacAir Leopard cannot even see it - although both machines can access it from the menu drop down and connect to the snow.
So here are my questions: Can I daisy chain the Snow to the TC? What port do I use on the Snow? What configuration can I use to get the Snow to access the net connected this way (the TC is connected to my Cable modem)? What software can I use to do what ever configs I need to do to the Snow?

Not sure why the admin util did not worked on the MBA.
This is the issue that I was trying to help with, for future base station administration. (I recognize that you can administer the Snow from an old machine. If that situation is satisfactory, you may disregard the rest of this post.) I'm sorry if my earlier post wasn't clear.
On the MBA, the preference file that I mentioned, especially if it was created by a different version of AirPort Admin Utility, might be corrupted.
AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5 might not find the Snow unless the MBA successfully connects to the Snow's wireless network before the utility launches.
And the utility might not work with the Snow unless the MBA's IP address when it is connected to the Snow's wireless network is in the same subnet as the Snow's own IP address. The IP address settings in OS 10.5 are in the Advanced network preferences for TCP/IP for AirPort. The MBA's IP address should be 10.0.1.x, if the Time Capsule is set to share a public IP address, the Snow is set not to distribute IP addresses, and the MBA is set to use DHCP. The Snow's IP address is viewable on the opening screen of AirPort Admin Utility on your old machine. (While the Snow is set not to distribute IP addresses, its LAN IP address equals its WAN IP address.) The WAN IP address settings for the Snow are in the "Internet" pane of AirPort Admin Utility. The Snow's IP address should also be 10.0.1.x--i.e., in the same subnet as the MBA--if the TC is set to share a public IP address, the Snow's WAN port is connected to the TC's LAN port, the Snow is set to use DHCP in the "Internet" pane of AirPort Admin Utility, and the Snow is set not to distribute IP addresses in the "Network" pane of AirPort Admin Utility.

  • Daisy chain apple time capsules

I need to get a new router. My 3 year old Time Capsule seems to be choking the broadband signal more and more.
First, is there a way to update the Time Capsule? I've recently changed to Mountain Lion and it seems to be around the time this choking started to happen.
Second, if I get a new Time Capsule, is there a way to daisy chain the old one so that I can still use it as backup storage?

How do I do a factory reset on the TC?
Power off the TC. Press reset.. power on the TC whilst continuing to hold in reset.. wait about 10sec until the front led flashes rapdily. You only need 3 hands to do this so a friend is a big help.
When you suggest clean install ML, you mean on my computers?
Yes, upgrade install causes wireless bugs. IMHO never upgrade install any OS ever.. it is never satisfactory.
Finally, how do I set up a TC to be in bridge mode, and turn off Wifi? I do not see those options in my Time Machine Utility.
    THank you!
On ML you are condemned to 6.1 toyland utility.. it is pretty and useless.. in other words pretty useless.
It is easy to load the 5.6 utility into ML. Now that I have done it.. just follow the instructions.
Download 5.6 utility for Lion. (even better if you still have a lion computer because you can then install it).
Download an unpacking tool.. eg. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16357/unpkg
This is simple and free. There is also Pacifist which is $20 shareware.
    Install unpkg and start it.
Open the 5.6 dmg file and drag the pkg onto unpkg.
It will open the package and load the files into the desktop under the name of the package.
    Open the AirPortUtility56 directory.
Go to applications, utilities.. and drag the utility to your utilites folder. You can now just start 5.6 instead of 6.1 and live just got a bit easier.
More details in lots of threads.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4172563?start=0&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4141324?start=15&tstart=0
In 5.6 utility.. bridge.. go to manual setup, internet tab. Connection sharing.. select off bridge mode.
In 6.1 utility.. bridge is an option under dhcp and NAT..
    Turn off wireless.
In 5.6 utility .. manual setup.. airport tab.. wireless sub section.. wireless mode .. off.
I haven't checked it in 6.1 yet.. but it should not be hard to find.

Sorry, but I really don't think this is something that the TC's USB port & File Sharing function would be able to support.
Have you tried this combination connected directly to your computer? ... and did it work?

  • Time Machine Backup and Key Chain

My G4 Powerbook died. dead. Fortunately, I backed up my user directory on time machine. I'm going to selectively bring old documents, plists, and library files to get rid of remnants of programs no longer used. My questions are these: Is the Keychain data stored somewhere in my user directory and, if so, can I safely bring the data over to my new machine?

If you have a keychain file from another computer, you can add the keychain to your keychain list. If the file has an extension .keychain then you can just open the file. Otherwise, open Keychain Access located in the Utilites folder in the Applications folder. Choose File menu > Add Keychain. Select the keychain file and click Open.
(I Copied This Information From The "Finder's Help")

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??

Power Supply blows a fuse, Ext Soundcard momentary power outages. Time Machine won't backup.
    Ok here's my setup
Mac Book Pro 13" APRIL 2011 latest firmware. 8GB RAM. Surge Protected mains connection..
M-AUDIO FIREWIRE SOUNDCARD AUDIOPHILE most recent drivers and powered by the MacBooks Firewire Out using a NEET Pro Lead,
The M-Audio has 2 x Firewire Ports and I take one  to a 2TB 7800rpm Iomega iMedia Drive which daisy chains to a 1TB FireWire Seagate HardDrive and yes both are Pre Powered and formatted for Time Machines exclusive use.
The M-Audio Firewire module can be pre powered but isn't for this reason, the FireWire Out from the Mac IS pre powered, and I'm using a good quality NEET lead that powers the Audiophile ok over the last few months. I have been warned by the manual if I add a power supply to a pre powered firewire chain I could damage equipment, I'm now running the the screen as low as possible and the backlit keys off to minimise power drain, I also use an Acer 24" Monitor with a NEET DV mini port to HDMI adaptor and it's been working great but this must be more power drain on the power supply, One of the USB ports goes to an Native Instruments Maschine Sampler Module, the other goes to a Pre Powered 4 Port USB Hub and that has been fine, it has 1 Axiom 25 USB Midi Keyboard, 2 Pre Powered Hard Discs 1 Portable USB Drive. Now the problems started with Time Machine it can't backup and I get Hard Disk Unsafe Disconnects and Failed Time Machine Backups and Now my Soundcard does the same in that it momentarily disconnects and reconnects in a second, in Settings under ENERGY SETTINGS I've set hard drives to Never Shut Down, and the Screen also, it's been more frequent, then a fuse blows in the Power Supply without tripping up my Surge Protector Socket pfft! just great, well it is only a 3AMP Fuse in the Plug Socket but it saved my MacBook!, ok checks Mains, yes it's old, and I've started using the Central Heating alot now and when it turns on it could be causing a power surge, same with the FridgeFreezer. Things i've tried, on the Seagate pre powered FireWire Hardisc I have switched the Firewire lead to its second FW port, I got no errors with Time Machine this time, not 100% it's done yet, Soundcard resets in Logic 9 ****, I do have 2 lower quality Firewire Leads that go from the Soundcard to the 2 harddrives will need upgrading ASAP, thats next, I recon its time to upgrade the Soundcard as well for a Focusrite or similar as all my M-Audio Soundcards would literaly loose there minds on PCs and Macs, flakey drivers would just drop out of the Audiophole Firewire Card, more than I care to mention, so if that happens it could explain why the Time Machine drive drops out also, hmmm, and there was me thinking if I used a Mac it would all be ok. wrong. Would apreciate any qualified input, thanks.

Ok some updates I see, 6 in total including a firmware and security upgrades, also two Native Instruments Updates, Reaktor and Kontakt. I will be testing, this. Before the Updates I managed to peak the CPU load in Logic 9 and was only using 14 tracks, will need to bounce the Synth Plugs and drum tracks and run all the source samples from the Local internal drive a Hitachi 5400rpm drive hmmm :/ will experiment, anyway my Iomega FW drive froze up the Iomega Mac Companion is the correct name for it 2TB 7800rpm but it met it's match or was is the processor? Still sussing it all out. Firewire leads upgrade in effect. testing.. bleep. .

  • Second iMac;what happens if you daisy-chain, how to do it?

    I recently bought a new iMac quad-core i7, 27".
I am interested in the possibility of using the earlier iMac,which is a 2.4 dual core 24" running Snowy as a second HD and as my dual monitor- would like to try to get it to act as extended desktop monitor.
I do photography and currently use a 24" Cinema HD for my second monitor.
My question is about the possibility of using the older iMac as a slave additional HD and extended desktop,(why waste the 300G it's got perking inside?),wondering if they'll daisy chain or recognize each other properly, and doing the extended desktop across 2 iMacs is possible? Can you do a 3 monitor display in this config? That would be pretty sweet....the more landscape the better!
I've read about multi-laptops config'ed as "super computer",(I remember Apple had an article about multiple MBP's doing this some time ago), but I'm more of a photog-dog than a gear geek. LOL!
Any input would be welcome!!! THANKS!
    CHEERS!

My recommendation would be to connect the old machine via Target mode to the new machine. You can then use the old machine's storage however you cannot use it's monitor. If you want a 3rd monitor then you will need to get a 3rd external monitor, the old machine cannot be utilized as one. You would need something like this to make it work. However this being said this would only make the old computer a storage device, IMHO a total waste or resources. I'd recommend using it for other things, use it for other things like a media server or something. For the additional storage get yourself a good FW800 external HD to use for that.

  • Can't find external hard drive for time machine restore

I recently installed Lion (mistake) and I'm now attempting to reinstall Snow Leopard from a Time Machine back up.  I get to the point where it starts searching for external drives in order to find the Time Machine back up; however, it is not able to find my drive.  I've tried plugging it in before I start the computer, and when it starts to search for the drive. I did not plug in my hard drive while I had Lion running (it never backed up from Lion).  Help?

I have a Mac Mini (late 2009) and I have an iomega 1TB external hard drive connected to my mini via firewire and usb (usb allows me to use the usb ports on the external 1TB drive to daisy chain other devices).  Since I installed Lion, my Time Machine  and this 1TB drive (and its partitions) is finicky.  Sometimes it is mounted and sometimes it is not.   This issue has only surfaced post Snow Leopard and in the Lion era. I am not the first to say this but the whole reason I went Mac was b/c of Vista.  I am beginning to think that Lion is the new Vista.  Sorry for the latter, just venting... b/c this ain't the first issue with Lion.
