Daisy Chain USB To FireWire?

Hi all.
I'm not really sure where to post this, so any suggestions about a better place would be great. Anyway, here's my question.
I do a lot of work with photos, and they take up a lot of hard drive space, so what I'm planning to do is this: I'll buy a big external hard drive with lots of connections (1 USB, 2 FireWire 800, 1 FireWire 400). I'll also buy a smaller external hard drive with much less in the way of connections (1 USB only). The big drive will act as my main storage drive, with all the files for each image included on it. The smaller drive will act as the bakcup drive, with the top 20% or so of my best photos in only a compressed format on it. I want the smaller (backup) drive to be as cheap as possible, as I don't have much of a budget at all. Here are the two drive selections I've made: big drive:
LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ Triple
Small drive:
WD Elements
Desktop
So, here's the question: I know that you can daisy chain FireWire drives that have more than one port together, like this:
A cable from FireWire port on Drive A to FireWire port on Drive B, then a cable from another FireWire port on Drive B to the FireWire port on computer. I know this works (right?).
But I don't want to have to spend more money on Drive A (the backup drive) so that it has a FireWire port. Since Drive B (the main drive) has a USB port, I thought I would run a USB cable from Drive A to Drive B like this:
*Setup 1*:A cable from the USB port on Drive A to the USB port on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on the computer.
Will setup 2 work? Will the data from Drive A make the crossover from USB to FireWire? If not, I suppose I could also use this setup:
*Setup 2:* A cable from the USB port on Drive A to one of the FireWire 800 ports on Drive B, then a cable from the FireWire 400 port on Drive B to the FireWire 400 port on my computer. Will this work better? Do USB to FireWire 800 adapters really work?
So, basically, all I really need to know is whether or not Setup 1 will work, and if it doesn't, whether or not Setup 2 will. Also, if anyone has any info/reviews/stories about the two drives I've selected, I'd love to hear that as well.

Nobody has heard of a USB to FireWire converter that works.
The first example you gave would require a USB B to USB B cable or perhaps a "gender bender". Both of the drives you're looking at seem to still use the original full-sized USB B port, while many have gone to the mini-B. It wouldn't work anyways since both are USB slave devices. USB was never designed to daisy-chain.
Why can't you just connect the USB-only device to the USB port. If you're strapped for ports, then maybe a USB hub. You wouldn't even need a powered hub if you have a few low-powered devices and this external drive which doesn't use bus power.

Daisy chaining two Lacie Firewire 800 drives on a G%

I've had one external drive working perfectly for months. Tried to daisy chain a second drive and can't get the second drive to register on my desktop. Support said to reboot. My system freezes upon shutting down. If I restart with the two connected, neither drives shows and my Eye TV shuts down. As soon as I disconnect the second drive, Eye TV works and the one drive appears. Any suggestions? Apple Care had none except purchasing a port that would handle firewire 800. How trustworthy would that be?

I've tried daisychaining a new d2 Big Disk Extreme FW800 and a d2 FW800 drive on my G5's FW 800 bus. I can't copy files from one drive to the other without an Error -36 code. I CAN copy to and from the drives to the Mac at nice fast speeds with no errors. Both LaCie drives are updated to their latest firmware, respectively.
The few times that I was able to copy a small folder from the d2 to the Big Disk, it took forever.
As a result of this thread, I'm now awaiting the delivery of a Belkin FW800 3 port hub. I hope this will clear up this issue, as I need to be able to move data between the two drives (both of which passed their tests via Disk Utility, Drive Genius, and DiskWarrior in flying colors).
I have noticed the older d2 FW800 has a lower firmware number than the Big Disk, however, the LaCie Update Tool reports that each drive is at its current appropriate firmware number. And yes, I ran the Update Tool independently on each drive, while the other was unmounted and unplugged.
Any advice?

Ejecting a Firewire DV camera daisy chained vis a External Firewire HD

I have my firewire DV camera daisy chained via my firewire external Hard drive.
When I unplug my firewire dv camera, after a little while I get a message on my mac that a device was removed incorrectly and the external firewire dirve dismounts.
This only happens after I have unplugged my DV cam, so am I supposed to eject the cmera somehow??
It doesn't show as an external drive so I wouldn't have a clue where to even start looking.
Any ideas?

This would depend on the "capturing" application. In most cases you simply tell the application that capture is completed by pressing a "Done" button, disconnect button, ESC key, or similar action to let the application know that it can close the device protocol and allow the device to be removed.

PCI Firewire / Hub Firewire or Daisy chain Which one will be a good idea

I'm starting to run outta room for firewire
so i decided to buy a PCI firewire card
so now i wanna know if its smart to plug my drives in there so as my isight or just stay with daisy chain or buy firewire hub ?

The Firewire PCI card i got has like a power connection port on it
I was wondering if i needed to connect it to anything or it gets enough power from the motherboard
I mean they didn't supply the cable to connect it to the power supply
and the G5 doesn't have any extra cable lying inside there to connect to it

Is there any "real" advantage to doing this?

The only advantage is to free up a port on the compute.
In your case the two drives only have Firewire 800 and eSATA in common. You don't have an eSATA port on your iMac so you could only daisy-chain via Firewire. If you did that then the drive that supports USB3 would run at a slower speed. The way you have it set up now one of them is able to operate at the very fast USB 3.0 speed. On the other hand if neither of these drives needs to run particularly fast then if you daisy-chain them via Firewire 800 that would free up the USB 3.0 port should you need it.

AppleTV and external hard drive daisy chaining

Was wondering if this is possible, I have a large collection of music and dvd which I have ripped into itunes. This is now getting so big that I need to do something. I understand that you can connect an appletv to the tv and access itunes through an external hard drive connected to my MAC. However my question is this.
I have found an hard drive its by lacie called the lacie d2 this drive can be daisy chain through its firewire connection. Therefor was wondering if I brought one of these drives and daisy chained another as my collection grows would this still be accessible through appletv.

I had drives being backed up to drives on the same chain while working on another drive in the chain, or something along those lines. To be honest performance had dropped but not to any extent where it became a problem.
My biggest issue was that my drives were all 2 TB and I had need for contiguous space that exceeded that. For example my itunes media was more than 2 TB and it was simply more convenient on a 4 TB drive rather than 2 x 2 TB.
My new 4 TB drives have an eSATA connection which I decided to use by installing an eSATA card in my mac. I now have 3 x 4TB eSATA drives and 5 x 2TB FW800 drives, my e SATA controller has 4 ports and will allow me to continue to expand, as I could eventually use 5 x 2 TB drives in an array attached to each port if I ever needed them.
In addition to the possibility of greater contiguous storage eSATA runs at 3 Gbps in comparison to firewire's 800 Mbps.
Don't get me wrong firewire never really became a problem.

MOTU - daisy chaining units?

So I contacted MOTU about this but they couldn't answer and said I needed to contact Apple. I have an 828 (the original) and a pre8 unit. I want to daisy chain them together to I have 16 ins w/10 preamps. According to the manual you can do this with the digital optical connection which I tried. I tried using each unit as the host but either way it would only recognized the host unit's ins and not the additional ones that had been connected via digital optical connection. I also tried just daisy chaining them via firewire but that way Logic recognizes both units separately instead of as one. The person I talked to at MOTU ran me through creating an aggregate device which I guess will combine the two units and create a new source option for the ins/outs. I tried that but it still only recognizes the main unit which connects to the computer via firewire. Can anyone help me with this? I know its possible to do and I have the digital optical cables hooked up right (in - out). I must be missing something. Thanks in advance.

Creating an aggregate device is really easy so I would imagine that you did it properly.
I use 2 896s and 2 ADA-8000s and have no problems with Logic 8. There are 2 different issues here at play. Let's address each:
1. Daisy Chaining. This is where they are attached firewire to each other and into the computer. This is where you use the aggregate device. This works for me as long as I hook them together with a word clock. Since you are using just two things, you can hook one to the other. Then, in the control panel, you can select which word clock as the clock source for the one being slaved off the other (also, in the aggregate, selected the master unit as where the clock is coming from). MOTU says that it can get the clock off of the firewire, I've never had success in it working. This of course will not cause no audio, it usually just means it removes any glitching. When connected as an aggregate device, it's like you are using them separately and CoreAudio is combining the results. The fact this is not working for you seems VERY strange.
2. ADAT connections. I think you are going to have to use CueMix on whatever device it is you want it to use ADAT and have it direct the signals out the ADAT port. By default, ADAT out has nothing to do with the inputs on the device. For this reason you can use all outputs and inputs at the same time. What you want is that your inputs get mapped to the ADAT outs on whatever device. This is why it is probably not working for you.
Other than that, I don't know what to say. I do know other people have responded that they are having trouble keeping their 8pre's recording all the time. So maybe it is a problem with the 8pre. These people were using it daisy chained firewire.

RAID Lacie Drives Daisy Chained Together?

This may be a stupid question but would like to know if anyone knows if it would be possible to RAID 5 x 2TB External Lacie drives which will be daisy chained together via Firewire 800? I would rather RAID them together rather than have them mount individually on the desktop where things start to get out of control. Any ideas?

Well we're editing a movie in Apple Pro Res HD and at the moment we're running a RAID array on the Mac Pro then there's the Xserve RAID and I feel then due to the need for more space having 5 Lacie drives also mounting on the desktop things will become hard to find and archive. Due to budget restraints we cannot go for another Xserve which would've been ideal we have to go for the cheaper option of daisy chaining the Lacie drives together in order to get about another 10TB to carry on with digitizing footage.

Pops when transferring thru daisy-chained MOTUs -- Logic?

I have two BLA-modded 828mkIIs, daisy-chained together via Firewire, feeding into Logic via firewire as an "aggregate device."
When playing back transfered tracks that were recorded into Logic, there'll be random, infrequent pops/clicks or soft thuds (like the sound of engaging a plug-in) across a few of the tracks. It's not some kind of peak; it'll happen in near silence, too, although when it happens on a track that had a hotter input, the noise is louder. I've swapped out Firewire cables, and it doesn't happen when I use the MOTUs individually.
It's gotta be something in the firewire connections or the computer/Logic... It's not coming off the tape. Any ideas?

It could be your audio settings. Basically, larger I/O buffer size might help.
You are doing the multitrack recording from tape to Logic, right? It may be your Mac is struggling to process it all at once using the current I/O buffer settings. Try increasing this parameter value and see what happens.

Daisy-chain Firewire 800 versus USB

Hi. I have an external drive (drive A) connected to my MPB via Firewire 800. I have my iTunes media library on this drive (movies, TV shows, music etc). When I watch a movie on my Apple TV, the content is being streamed from this drive via my MBP to the Apple TV. This works fine.
I also have a second external drive (drive B) that I use only as a back-up for drive A. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up drive A onto drive B. I can connect drive B in one of two ways: Option #1 is to connect drive B directly to my MBP via USB (USD 2.0). This is how I currently have it connected. Option #2 is to connect drive B to drive A via a Firewire 800 cable, daisy-chaining the two drives.
Two questions:
1. Which option will give me better performance when backing up drive A to drive B?
2. If I am watching a movie on Apple TV (streaming from drive A) at the same time that I am backing up drive A to drive B, will option #2 affect streaming of the movie?

Have you Shut down your Mac and disconnected your firewire cable from both ends and let it sit about ten minutes then reconnect and try. Also, it is important to disconnect the AC power to your Mac, this helps to reset the FireWire port(s).
Have you checked to see if Disk Utility sees it/ can mount it?
Do you have TechTool Pro or DiskWarrior, both of which you could use to try to mount it.
It is also possible that you have a bad cable or a bad port, do other FW devices work?

Daisy chain two external drives via Firewire, then connect one via USB to the TC?

I have two external drives that have both Firewire and USB ports. My 1st generation 500 gb Time Capsule (maybe all of them?) only has USB ports so up til now, I have connected one or the other drive via USB. (I've tried to connect both to a powered USB hub but one drive has problems showing up. At this point I only use the one drive that shows up and connect it directly with no hub to the Time Capsue.)
My question is: Can I daisy chain the two drives via Firewire and then connect one of them (probably the one that has no problems connecting with USB) to the Time Capsule via USB?
Second, somewhat-related problem...
I don't know why one drive isn't connecting very well when directly connected to the Time Capsule. Both are Fantom drives. One is a 1TB, the one that has prblems connecting is a 250GB. I've tried connecting directly or through a powered hub. The 1B has no problems, the 250 gb won't show up most of the time and disconnects itself fairly quickly if it does connect. I've switched cables; that hasn't helped. The 1TB stays connected most of the time but sometimes it disconnects too. I suspect the Time Capsule just isn't able to deal with external drives so I don't puch it. It would be nice to be able to have both drives accessable through the TC though.

Doing some experimentation, connecting the drives directly to the MBP:
- Neither of the two drives Firewire daisy-chained and going through the powered USB hub connected to the MBP mount. I was using old aliases on desktop.*They don't show up on network otherwise. (Each drive self-mounts with both Firewire and USB direct connections.)
*Even after making new aliases, neither drive will mount using their new aliases when directly connected (not through hub) with USB or Firewire (and Thunderbolt adapter.) That's weird.
- Both the 240 gb and the 1TB drives going through powered hub connected to MBP mount by themselves.
- Two drives daisy-chained via Firewire and one drive connected to the MBP via Firewire (and Thunderbolt adapter) self-mount. No surprise there but that doesn't help me as I want to have the drives further away from the MBP and connected to the Time Capsule, which doesn't have a Firewire port anyway...
- All of the USB and the Firewire cables work as does the Thunderbolt adapter. I tested them.
I wonder.... I have a Firewire to what appears to be an Ethernet connector. I wonder if that would be any good. I'm afraid to try it though...

the answer is none. For what ever reason, they are draw a lot of

FireWire 800 Daisy Chain Problem

Hello everyone, I have three firewire drives. Two 2TB 3.5" drives and one 2.5" 1TB drive. All three are connected to my MacBook Pro 13" via the one firewire port in a daisy chain. I usually always have the 3.5" disk connected. When I add the portable drive to the daisy chain, it crashes the desktop drive, and I get the "do not disconnect drives without ejecting" message. Is this normal? I am thinking of purchasing the Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter, only to avoid the crashes of the other drives in the Daisy chain.
My Mac is an early 2011 13" MacBook Pro i5 2.3GHz with 16GB RAM.

The disc has 2 FW800 and 1 USB2.
If you buy a TB to FW800 you should give to the disc more power from the TB port.
If you connect the disc with USB you could use a special cable with 2 plugs on one side and one smal USB plug on the other. This cable is designed to give to one disc the pover grom 2 USB ports but one of the 2 can also be connected to an USB power supply, so ytou will give to the disc more power.... of copurse with USB you have a lower speed.

Is daisy chaining on a macbook air through the thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adaptor possible?

I am attempting to daisy chain two Glyph portagig 50's and connect them to my MacBook Air. They are both 1TB, 7200RPM drives and are both connected to external power. When I attempt the daisy chain only the first drive mounts and when I attempt to connect the second drive to it, the first (mounted) drive ejects and the second drive does not mount. Both drives need to be turned off and on again in order for either to be remounted.
I contacted Glyph and they have said that it is most likely a problem with the Thunderbolt to FW800 adaptor. Which leads me to wonder whether or not daisy chaining through the adaptor is even possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
My MacBook Air is a mid-2011 model with a 1.8GHz Core i7 processor and 4GB of RAM, if that helps at all.

They are both 1TB, 7200RPM drives and are both connected to external power.
Eeeek, dont do that anymore. 2.5" dont need power, and daisy chaining them BOTH thru thunderbolt, your Air is likely kicking one because youre mostly likely sending feedback THRU the firewire.
Some inventive folks unknowingly have powered (3.5" need power, 2.5" DONT) 2.5" thru USB and found out the hard way they deep fried circuitry.

Daisy-chaining firewire 400 and firewire 800?

I would like to daisy-chain two Western Digital MyBook Pros to a Macbook:
- FW 400 from Macbook to first drive
- FW 800 between the drives
Would this work or not? I have one of those, they have 2 x FW 800, 1 x FW 400, 1 x USB at back.
(If not, I'll buy a 'Premium' which has 2 x FW 400, and 1 x USB..)

Just pulled this from the WD site. I would say this indicates it would work. You won't get more speed but they should work daisy chained. This indicates the drive is smart enough to do this.
