Daisy-chaining Dell MST and non-MST display

Hi,
I wanted to connect two screens to my MBP:
1 DELL U2713H (daisy chainable)
1 DELL U2713HM
so I connected the U2713H to my MBP via miniDP and daisychained the U2713HM via DP on the U2713H. I activated DP 1.2 on the U2713H. The whole system started flickering on Win 7 and then crashed Windows so bad that I had to reboot a couple of times before everything worked with only the U2713H connected.
I also tried it on MacOS and here both screens showed a halfway ok picture, but the same one, i.e. MacOS did not recognize the U2713HM only the U2713H
If I understand the specs correctly, everything should work properly. Any idea why it does not work?

Hi, thanks for the answer.
Does that apply to MacOS only or also to Win 7?

  • Daisy Chain 24" Monitor to 27" Thunderbolt Display

    Hi everybody,
I have the 2011 MBP with the 6750m and I want to buy the new 27" Thunderbolt Display. Currently, I'm using a Samsung 24" DVI Display with the Display Port to DVI adapter that I bought with the MBP.
I was wondering if I can continue to use the 24" and daisy chain it to the Thunderbolt Display?
    Best,
    Luka

Kevin can you confirm this? Do you have a Thunderbolt Display, with a MiniDisplayport to DVI hooked up to your Dell laptop? I presume this works, but that you only have the monitor and speakers working, without the USB/Ethernet/TB port that are on the back of the display?
I am waiting for somebody to test this so I can decide to buy the display yes or no so please let me know asap : )

  • Daisy chain thunderbolt drives and RAID

    Hi everyone!
I was wondering, is it possible to buy several thunderbold drives, daisy chain them, and then make them act like a RAID 5 ?
Another question would be: I looked around the lacie drives and they said they can be put as RAID 0 or 1, but when you daisy chain them, so every one of them become a RAID 0 or 1 independent from the other or do they act as one?
    Thank you for the precisions!

I believe you may do that provided the iMac is at the end of the chain, so the external drive must be able to pass through the port. But Apple's information on chaining is in relation to their standalone displays which must terminate the chain. So I am assuming that may also apply in your case even though the iMac isn't a standalone display.
It may be much simpler to use an USB external drive.

  • Daisy chain Dell u2713h

I have two Dell u2713h monitors on my desk at work.
I also have a Macbook Pro10,1 (early 2013) with a grand total of two TB ports
I need to use one of the two TB ports for a TB-to-ethernet adapter because there are well in excess of 30 wireless access points visible to my computer from my desk which means using our company's wifi is a no-go, I'm literally getting disconnected 1-2 times per minute.
So, I can only use one of my TB ports for my two monitors. Both monitors are DP 1.2 compatible and have 1.2 support activated.
    I'm running OS X 10.9.4
As far as I know it should be possible to daisy chain the monitors (I am, of course, running my MBP in clamshell mode with external mouse and keyboard) but when I connect them as follows:
    MBP mini-DP out -> Monitor #1 DP in -> Monitor #1 DP out -> Monitor #2 mini-DP in
    I just get mirroring.
So, what am I doing wrong? This should work, right?

I cannot get my out of the box one new Dell monitor, model u2415 to work with my MacBook Pro (MBP). I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011). I have no other external monitor.
After working with Dell Tech Support, they tell me it is "Plug-n-Play" and incompatible with Apple. However, I find on YouTube and here, people using this new Dell monitor.
I told Dell, I cannot get any Menu or what have you, to come up on the Dell. Only the "Inputs" selection. I think that's where the problem is.
Frankly, after two nights and four hours or so (also with Apple). I'm about to give up.
    Am I missing something? Ideas???

  • Daisy-chain a thunderbolt external drive & thunderbolt display?

Although you can't daisy chain multiple thunderbolt displays to the new (mid 2011) Air's are you able to connect a thunderbolt display and daisy chain a thunderbolt external hard drive?

    1. As stated in the questions and answers section of the link you posted, no.
    2. Connect it to the MacBook Pro, start File Sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences, and use the Connect to Server command in the Finder's Go menu on the iMac.

  • Can't daisy chain Thunderbolt 1 and 2 drives

I have a Mac Mini server (mid 2011) with a Pegasus R4 connected via Thunderbolt that has been running fine. The Mini is running Lion Server.
Just recently I got a Lacie 2big drive with Thunderbolt 2. I assumed that TB2 was backwards compatible so daisy chaining the Lacie to the Pegasus wouldn't be an issue. But when I do so, the Lacie doesn't mount and Disk Utility cannot see it.
However, if I connect the Lacie directly to the Mini it mounts and works fine. So then I tried connecting the Pegasus to the Lacie. But now the Pegasus doesn't mount and can't be seen by Disk Utility or Promise Utility.
So, is the problem trying to daisy chain TB1 and TB2 devices together? Or is it the Mini? Or is it Lion?
    Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply. The Pegasus is over 3 years old and I have never updated the firmware. I will do so.
However, I got everything to work. The one I thing I didn't try was rebooting with both drives daisy chained and turned on. This did it. I restarted many times but each time was with only one of the drives connected. Not sure why a reboot is necessary for the daisy chained device to be visible.

  • Daisy-chaining firewire 400 and firewire 800?

I would like to daisy-chain two Western Digital MyBook Pros to a Macbook:
    - FW 400 from Macbook to first drive
    - FW 800 between the drives
Would this work or not? I have one of those, they have 2 x FW 800, 1 x FW 400, 1 x USB at back.
    (If not, I'll buy a 'Premium' which has 2 x FW 400, and 1 x USB..)

    JoeyR wrote:
I'm not sure if the hardware in the first drive, that's connected by firewire 400 is "smart" enough to jump the data over to the FW800 connectors for daisy chaining.
Just pulled this from the WD site. I would say this indicates it would work. You won't get more speed but they should work daisy chained. This indicates the drive is smart enough to do this.
+Question: Will Western Digital FireWire 400 (1394a) external hard drives work connected to a FireWire 800 (1394b) port?+
+Answer: The FireWire 800 Specification (1394b) states that FireWire 400 devices will work while connected to a FireWire 800 (1394b) port. The FireWire 400 cable (4-6 pin or 6-6 pin) will not connect to a FireWire 800 port (9 pin) therefore you will need to connect the hard drive using a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable (1394a to 1394b cable). These cables are available at most computer stores.+

  • Daisy chain of 3550 and 3560

Can we use a mixture of 3550 and 3560 in a daisy chain. What i mean is
1.if i want to connect 4 switches in a daisy chain can two of them be 3550's and the other two be 3560's.
    2. If i ahve 2 3550's in a daisy chian can i add one more 3560 to the same chain

it may be more beneficial to aggregate 3 of the switches to one via the GB/SFP ports.
    ie:
    switch1-3560 >> switch2
    switch1-3560 >> switch3
    switch1-3560 >> switch4
having correctly sized ports for aggregated bandwidth will be required.
you can also perform daisy chaining as you've asked.

  • Can You Daisy Chain Firewire 400 and 800 Mixed?

I would like to purchase an External Drive. I'm looking at a FW800. What I'm wondering is, Can I daisy chain devices mixed in.
I Want to run a FW800 Bilingual cable from my Powerbook to the External Enclosure. From the Ext. Enclosure, I'd like to have take my second FW800 port and take a cable that converts Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 and plug in another item. Is this possible?
Can I mix and match FW devices using separate protocol in a daisy chain configuration?

    Russ,
Yes, it is possible. I have a drive that works on FW800, FW400, or USB2. Connected to the second FW800 port on that, I have an adaptor cable, a FW400 cable to a FW400 drive, and another FW400 drive connected to that . All 3 drives are on the desktop of my PowerBook. When I read your post, I had the only first drive connected to the iBook with USB2.
The only problem I've run into was trying to copy a 200G drive on FW800 to a 250G drive on the FW400 port on the PowerBook. Working overnight, it managed to copy ONE Gigabyte! I hooked them up as they are now, and copied the whole shebang in about 45 minutes
I picked up an empty drive case, 800/400/USB2 combo from OWC and a 250G Maxtor drive at CompUSA for about $100 less than I could get a 250 FW800 drive anyplace. http://www.macsales.com

  • Can i daisy chain external drives and use multiple disks for my iTunes libraries

It's amazing how much content you can acquire. I've filled my 2TB external drive with content. I purchased another drive and daisy chained them. How do I get additional uploads to automatically go to the new drive? Itunes is indicating that the drive is "full".
Please help! I've got 6 downloads effectively "paused"

No, sorry, Time Machine can only back up to a single volume.
Short of getting a larger disk, your best bet is to back up one drive (probably the OSX drive) with Time Machine, and use a different app to back up the other one to a different drive.  See the green box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for some suggestions.

  • Mac Pro and non apple displays

    hello all.
I used to have a dell display (really cheap TN non ultrasharp) and i was not happy with it at all. when connected to my mac i would get visible diagonal rippling lines through the display especially when viewing dark colours. however this was fine when i used boot camp windows. many from the discussion suggested that it was because mac likes IPS panels where the cheap brands use TN. so i got me a 20 in apple cinema display and i love it!. after three years i would love to upgrade to bigger display thats flexible, (HDCP and more connections) and not break my bank. at the moment im looking at dell again (sigh) the new ultra-sharp u2311h (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=e n&cs=19&sku=320-9270) this panel features IPS panel similar to previous ultra sharp models that had exact panels as the apple cinema displays. i would love to hear some opinions and tips.
and i would especially love to hear form ultra sharp users and their thoughts / experience. please please let me know.

When I said that NEC displays were much better than Dell's I was referring to the former's Multisync "LCD" range, which use different panels to their "EA" models.
"EA" models are classified as "office monitors" by NEC, whereas "LCD" models are "high end", and consequently are more expensive.
I have no idea how the NEC Multisync EA231WMi compares against the Dell Ultrasharp U2311H, but there is a lot more to a display than sharing the same panel. Although their displays are built around the same panel, NEC and Dell would be using different technology inside, and that is where the former has the advantage, because Dell does not "manufacture" high end/professional monitors.
Although Dell Ultrasharp monitors have received several good reviews, particularly with regard to value for money, they are not in the same league as NEC, EIZO, or LaCie, particularly where colour accuracy is paramount, and that is one of the reasons why they are usually much cheaper.
Some time before I purchased my NEC 30" display, Macworld UK published a review covering several 24" to 27" displays, including models from NEC, EIZO, LaCie, Dell and Samsung. The 26" LaCie model used the same H-IPS panel as the 26"NEC, but it was the NEC which walked away with the 5 star "Best Buy" award. The Dell 27" was judged to be value for money, but fell down on colour accuracy.
For further endorsement of the quality of NEC's "LCD" range see:
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/monitors/242010/nec-multisync-lcd3090wqxi
The point I am trying to make is that NEC have the expertise to produce the above exceptional quality display, whereas Dell do not. Doubtless, some of that expertise filters down to models in other NEC ranges. The panel might be the same, but the technology inside the display will most certainly be different between the two companies.
You pay your money, and you take your choice!
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Daisy chaining firewire 800 and 400 devices

I am considering purchasing a blue-ray DVD recorder that has two 800 ports and one 400 port. My sony video camera has a firewire 400 connection and I am wondering whether that camera cable may be used to import video using my 400 cable connected to the 400 port. One 800 port would be connected to the computer. Or should I purchase a firewire800 to 400 (4 pin) cable and use the second 800 port on the recorder, or go direct from the computer swapping the cables when importing video?

    Hi Charles
If your using the Core Duo with 2 400 ports listed in your profile, then you might be better off just connecting the player up 400 and then using the second 400 port for the camera. If however we are talking about a newer iMac, one with a single 800 port then you will want to connect the recorder up 800 and then the camera up 400 to that.

  • DisplayPort 1.2 MST (Daisy Chaining) on 2013 MacBook Pros

    Hi,
If I am not wrong, 2013 MacBook Pros support DisplayPort 1.2, and according to Wikipedia one of the features added in 1.2 is daisy chaining (emphasis mine):
DisplayPort version 1.2 was approved on December 22, 2009. The most significant improvement of the new version is the doubling of the effective bandwidth to 17.28 Gbit/s in High Bit Rate 2 (HBR2) mode, which allows increased resolutions, higher refresh rates, and greater color depth. Other improvements include multiple independent video streams (daisy-chain connection with multiple monitors) called Multi-Stream Transport, facilities for stereoscopic 3D, increased AUX channel bandwidth (from 1 Mbit/s to 720 Mbit/s), more color spaces including xvYCC, scRGB and Adobe RGB 1998, and Global Time Code (GTC) for sub 1 µs audio/video synchronisation. Also Apple Inc.'s Mini DisplayPort connector, which is much smaller and designed for laptop computers and other small devices, is compatible with the new standard.
However, on OS X Mavericks, daisy chaining is only supported for Thunderbolt displays and not displays that support DisplayPort 1.2, such as Dell U2713H.
Is this a limitation of the hardware, or is this a feature that's not supported by Mavericks's DisplayPort drivers and could potentially be supported by Yosemite?
    Thanks.

    Daisy chain Dell u2713h
Covered in another thread. Short version, Apple hasn't enabled support for it. If you run Windows it works great!. No support in Yosemite either.
