Daisy chaining external HDD with FW 800? How do I do this?

I have a new My Book 500G HDD hooked up to my iMac with FW 800. I want to daisy chain a new one to it. Do you have to then use a FW 400 between the two external drives? How do you do this? Does that slow it down noticeably. I use it for HDV editing. Thanks!

Hi Dan,
if I recall correctly than the FW800 MyBook has two FW800 ports, so that you can use one for connection to the Mac and one for daisy chain a second with FW800 to the first (assuming the second has also FW800).
If the second has only FW400 than you have to use the FW400 port of the first.
And since WD delivers all needed cables with the drives, you should have the needed cable to do so.
When using FW400 you will have a slowdown, since the harddisk itself has a higher throughput than what FW400 can do.

Stefan

  • Daisy Chaining External HDDs

Okay, I know this has been asked a couple of times around the Discussion Boards, but I want to clarify and expand upon it.
Right now I have one 500GB LaCie d2 External HDD that I use only for Time Machine. This works out great, however, as I download more content from the iTunes store, buy more music, etc., it's evident that I'm going to need more space eventually.
My plan is to buy two or three more 500GB HDDs. Each will be used for a different purpose: one for iMovie, one for iTunes and video, and maybe one more just for extra storage if I need it. I don't really need to go any larger, and I don't want to ever put too much on a HDD anyway incase it ever bites the bullet.
My question relates to daisy chaining all of the drives. I use Firewire 800, and I just want to make sure that I should have any problems if the HDDs run daisy chained together. Also, do you think I would have any problems keeping the drives on all of the time if they were rack mounted?

Theoretically you should be fine daisy chaining the drives as long as they are individually powered. I think those people having problems may be related to the particular drive cases being used. One way you could cut down on the number of external cases is to get a dual drive enclosure. This is the one that I am using:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW924AL2K/
Just buy two hard drives and install them into the case. Set the jumper to JBOD and both drives will mount over a single FW800 connection.

  • How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?

How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?
I used to store my pictures on an external hard drive using the latest version of Aperture. Now I tried migrating my Aperture library to Photos. However, after a short moment an error message popped up telling me that "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. Photos does not have the necessary permissions...".
My external HDD doesn't need any permission repairs nor is the system prohibited to read from or write to it.
Thanks for any advice in advance!

My guess is that the encryption is the problem for the new app.

  • MacBook Air Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter and daisy-chaining external FW drives

Here is my problem—I have a MacBook Air 13" running Mavericks to which I want to attach external FW drive(s). This is easily achievable by using the Thunderbolt-to-FW 800 adapter. And the adapter works great until I try to daisy-chain two external drives. If I attach a second drive to the first one, it immediately unmounts the first drive and I get the 'improperly disconnected drive' warning.
I seem to recall that this was doable in Mountain Lion (about 85% sure). So is this a software or hardware problem? And, to go even deeper into the weeds, my two external FW drives are self-powered (no external power supply). So if I got wall warts for these drives, would it work? Or am I remembering this incorrectly and the adapter never supported daisy-chaining?
The external drives are a pair of G-Tech G-Drive minis, but one is a year to 18-months older than the other one, which means it probably has an older FireWire chipset, but on the other hand, they do mount successfully as self-powered FW 800 drives from a native FW 800 port, or even from a daisy-chain originating from a FW 800 port. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have 4 FW devices chained together and use the TB->FW dongle. They all have power bricks. I have several bus powered devices. Some are quirky, some just don't function, two work reliably. There's no question it is all about how much power they need and TB doesn’t supply enough. Bottom line for me: my bus powered FW drives are soley relegated to use with my last FW equipped computer and when it does they will too.

I backup to an external hdd with Time Machine, when it ran out of space it did not delete old backups, now my internal hdd says its full when before it had heaps of space. I have searched for extra files but cant find any. Can anyone help, please.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • External HDD with Partitions not functioning in Yosemite

I was part of the Public Beta for Yosemite and didn't have any issues. But since upgraded to the full version of Yosemite, by external HDD with 2 partitions (one for files and one for Time Machine) has been acting strangely. I can still access (read/write) the partitions with my files on. But the Time Machine Partition doesn't mount and is greyed out in Disk Utility. I have tried to repair, erase, reformat the drive but none of these options work because it says that it can't access the drive (because it won't mount). I don't have access to a non-Yosemite Mac at the moment, but even so, I still need to use the HDD on my Yosemite Mac. Any suggestions?

I had exactly the same problem after installing Yosemite.  Had the drive checked out by a local PC repair company who could not find anything wrong with the HD (Segate) but suggested I checkout the warrantee.  I tried using the Apple disk verification and repair tools - hopeless.  So I returned the drive to Seagate who replaced it with another "re-certified" drive.  I was not comfortable with using this as it had (in theory) failed; so might another second hand unit. So I bought a new Western Digital which does the job.  No changes to the operating system needed.
This leave me with a strange taste in my mouth!
Was the original drive faulty or not (Seagate didn't tell me what was they simply replaced it)?
Did Yosemite trash the dish - I will never know?
Why did the WD HD work and not the Seagate?
Life is too short - I moved on - but it did cost me over £100 to restore my backup facility for no apparent reason.
PS the Seagate replacement is now used for backing up a laptop - OS Windows Vista - no problems...........

  • I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

I just backed up my photos by copying my iPhoto Library onto an external drive. Now the Library on my MacBook won't open. I can only open the photos if the external is plugged in. How can I resolve this issue?

    Exactly what did you do?
    The correct steps are
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
My guess is that that you have not switched iphoto to use the external drive yet - opttion launch and select libary

hello apple guys, after installing OS X Mavericks, i can't open app store, reminders, contacts, mail(crash), maps, Image Capture, and other apps that comes with Mavericks OS, how i can solve this problem?

So is this the way Apple works now? Not solving customers problems? I'm sure so many users have had this problem. I've had, and I reinstalled Mavericks 3 times. Works fine for some days and then several Apple Apps stop working. Is that a way to force us ti update to Yosemite? (I don't want to) and then pay to update some third party programs (i.e. Pro Tools). Also, there are so many 15" MacBooks Pro with graphic problems and of course the guys at the Apple Service Centers always say: "It's the logic board, you can have it replaced, but it's so expensive I would recommend a new Mac".  I really, really miss Steve Jobs!

Also, I want to sort my music in the way I used to with iTunes. How can I do this with just these two devices, i.e. NO Computer? Can the iCloud help? Why can't I download iTunes (i.e. my library as I saw it on the computer) to these devices? Thanks to anyone who can help me here.

You can change the email address of one's appleID...
I'd recommend changing moms email to yours to get a good backup on the Mac
Then switch mom's back to hers
Then change your account to the same email you used.
I've done something similar when I needed to update my Apple account (one ID changing email addresses and phone)

I think there is not native rule for this, but you could try a transport rule which removes all attachments over a very small file size like 1KB.

I have an ipad and when I watch a video the audio does not match up with the video, how can I fix this?

    Hello there, graciecloyd.
The following Knowledge Base article offers a few steps to try when an application is not functioning as expected:
    iOS: Understanding multitasking
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4211
If an app doesn't respond to your input, or doesn't perform as expected, do the following, testing after each step:
    Check for app updates.
    Force the app to close.
    Restart your device.
    Update your iOS device.
    Learn more about troubleshooting apps.
On Step 2, close all applicaitons that are open. On Step 3, if the restart doesn't help resolve the issue, you may also want to try the Reset step in that article as well.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.
