Damaged ATA Controller?

Hello!
I own a 867mhz powerbook, now I have the problem that it doesn't boot anymore. It hangs on the gray-blue apple, the harddisk works well and has no problems (testet with another pc). The diagnostic cd gives a 2 STF/1/4 error.
Then I tried booting with a linux system rescue cd, but I get following output:

After every reboot I have other strange symbols as drive name and the disk geometry is changed...
Is the ata controller broken? What can I do? Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I am not familiar with the linux rescue disk and have never heard of running it on an OS X installation. If you have your Mac OS X install disk, I suggest you boot from it and run Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back with results and/or further questions or comments.
Cheers.

  • What's wrong with my drive? Dead Drive? ATA controller? Logic Board?

    Hi!
I have had a problem with my iBook G4 1.33GHz for a while now. I've tried a few times to fix it and then have given up thinking replacement was the best option. I'll try to be brief but this saga has actually been going on for over 2 years.
The basic problem is that the computer finds the HD intermittently. The problem used to occur after the computer had booted and was on for maybe an hour. A friend of mine removed the drive and had it running in a separate enclosure for a few days. It seemed fine-all disk checkers like Disk Warrior checked it out just fine. He reinstalled the drive and gave me back the computer. Within a few days, it froze like before. Upon restart I just get the question mark folder.
That was almost 2 years ago. I've tried a few different things to see what was the problem but to no avail. Here's what I have tried:
-Booting into target disk mode-the disk does not mount.
-Booting from a CD-even if I hold down the C key, it prompts that this is going to be a new install and when I get to the screen to pick the volume, the HD does not appear.
-Tried the shim trick as indicated at:
    http://coreyarnold.org/ibook/?p=20
Some earlier symptoms included video issues so this made sense.
-Took apart yesterday to make sure the drive connected well. It didn't work at first but later booted from hard drive.
-Since it booted, I restarted in Target Disk mode and ran Disk Utility from my iMac. There were some errors but DU was able to fix them all. Restarted iBook no problem.
-Ran Apple Hardware Test overnight in loop mode. After 18 rounds, nothing came up.
-Ran SMART Reporter and got green.
-Thought everything was ok so I ran Software Update. First round went fine. I ran it a second time knowing that some updates can be incremental. Upon downloading, computer froze and since then I am back to square one-no booting.
-Took apart today to see if there was any corrosion on the ATA chip as mentioned in this article:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2310290&tstart=0
as the thread mentioned a lot of stuff I was experiencing.
    -Reassembled after finding nothing.
-Now the computer does not boot whatsoever-it tries to eject disk in optical drive and then nothing else-no sounds, no video, etc.
So what does all of this mean? I thought the earlier indicators were a dying drive but when my friend checked it out and found nothing, we were stumped. He actually suggested the ATA controller. The not wanting to boot from a CD really bothers me. What does that mean? I have never seen that in 20 years of using Macs.
Oh and if it matters, this computer was formerly fixed as it did have the dreaded logic board problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Brian

    Hi again!
So this is with the new board? Was there sectoring of the lines?
If so that's the graphics chip most likely.
Yes. However, since this has gone on for a while and I never finished taking care of it, I can't remember all the details like sectoring of the lines.
The problem used to occur after the computer had booted and was on for maybe an hour.
So it freezes? That does sound like a GPU problem esp as it happens after an hour or so. (thermal flex causing separation of BGA)
Normally, yes. I have also gotten the kernel panic screen (You must restart your computer now). When it froze this morning, I had started to download a System Update. The clock ran, but I couldn't force-quit anything. What about the fact that the drive doesn't mount in Target Disk Mode?
You could pull the board and send it for reball.
I've also found a few boards on eBay that so far are less than the reball, but unless it was already reballed, then I run the risk of this happening again in the future, right?
    Thanks again for your help!

  • G3 Modem and ATA Controller Card

I am upgrading a B&W G3 350 MHz Yosemite running Tiger for some friends. They use dial-up (pooh) and the B&W did not ship with an internal modem. I found an Apple OEM on welovemacs.com for $60 ($10 more than the Apple USB). I am not sure which route to go (internal or USB). I am in a timed situation, so I am also considering a PCI modem. Any suggestions on the PCI modem (brand and model)? I know Tiger will not support some PCI modems.
Also, the G3 will not support larger HDDs. It currently has a 40 Gig drive in it. I tried installing an 80 Gig, but the ATA controller chip (Rev 1 logic board) did not recognize it. Any suggestions on a PCI based ATA controller card (brand and model)? Also, do these ATA controller cards usually ship with the power and data cables, or do I need to buy them separately? If so, any suggestions on which ones to buy and where?
I would appreciate any help as quickly as possible.
    Thanks,
    Thomas

    Grant,
"Only when you start to use them do you begin to notice more than a casual amount of crashes, lock-ups, and eventually, data corruption. An 80 GB hard drive should be recognized immediately if it is correctly cabled and the straps are set correctly. Both 80 GB and 40 GB drives may be encountering corruption problems on the built-in controller."
The 40 GB drive has been in this machine for at least 4 years. It was originally my machine given me by a Mac Genius buddy. I used it for over a year before I bought my G4. I then loaned the B&W to my cousin who used it for over 2 years before HE bought a G4 and returned the G3 to me.
When I installed the 80 Gig drive (which already had 10.3 installed), the machine would not boot from it. I booted from the Tiger install DVD and tried to install Tiger. The installation got all the way to the end, then the installation seemed to stop. I left the machine sit for about an hour, then heard the boot tone of the machine re-starting. It never booted, though. I got the gray Apple screen and could actually hear the "Welcome to Tiger" music coming from the speaker, but the gray Apple screen never went away.
I tried re-jumpering the drive, thinking I had gotten the jumper opposite of what it should be, but that didn't do any good either. I tried putting the drive in my Granite Digital external Firewire HDD casing, but the drive would never mount on my G4. So, I re-re-jumpered the drive back to the way I originally had it jumpered. It mounted on my G4 just fine at that point. So, I then installed Tiger via the external Firewire casing using my G4 tower. Tiger installed successfully, and I put the HDD back into the G3, but it STILL would not boot. It would never get past the gray Apple screen, or the machine would kernel panic if it did.
So finally, in desparation, I put the old 40 Gig that was in the machine when my cousin shipped it back to me, back into the G3 and it booted from it just fine. I later did a clean install of Tiger, and the machine still boots fine.
So, as you can see, it really seems that the ATA controller chip does not like the 80 Gig drive.
"Why not broaden your options with an external modem?"
I may indeed decide to go with the Apple external USB, but was told by a Specialist at the Apple Store that the new Apple USB modem might not work with the G3. My friend, whose parents I am setting the G3 up for, owns a MacBook Pro, so he can use the Apple USB if it does not work with the G3 and when and if his parents get broadband.
I still would like to know if a PCI based modem will work with the the G3. I found a post on this board late last night (after I posted this thread) where a user had a question similar to mine. He/she was trying to swap a PCI modem between a PC and a B&W. Whoever responded to the post stated that the B&W will not support ANY PCI based modems. It will only support the OEM Apple modem that plugs into the logic board near the USB and Firewire ports or an external USB modem (similar to, but not specifially the Apple USB modem).
    Thanks,
    Thomas

  • KT266 PRO2 and PCI ATA controller

I have a lot of ide devices so I bought a PCI ide controller years ago. Now I got my little brothers motherboard. MSI KT266 PRO2, and plugged all my stuff into it. When it was time to reinstall Win, but it would not boot the cd, or from floppy. I checked the boot order, all looks fine.
Then I tried to take the PCI IDE controller out, and then it booted my winXP cd fine.
So basically, When the PCI ATA bios is loaded (the card), I'm unable to boot from cd-rom or floppy. Only boot from HDD1 works. So every time I need to reinstall windows, I need to unplug all harddrives from the PCI IDE controller card. Then windows is installed I can plug the harddisks back in...
I can't find an explanation to this...
No problem when the PCI IDE controller is used with 2 other motherboard I have. Latest bios is used on the motherboard and the pci IDE adapter card.
    MSI KT266 PRO2
    AMD athlonxp 1700+
    Sapphire Radeon 9600 PRO
    maxtor ata100 pci controller
    768 MB DDR pc-2100 ram

On the MB controller I have 2 harddrives on primary (one master, one slave), and 1 dvd-drive (master) and 1 cd-recorder (slave) on secondary.
On my ata controller card I have 2 extra harddrives for backup. Both on the IDE1. One as master and the other as slave.
    All drives are properly configured.

  • Serial ATA Controller Card for bigger hard drives on 8600/300

    Hi again,
Can a Serial ATA Controller Card work on the PowerMac 8600/300 as well as on the G4 tower?
How can I tell if the PCI slots are the same?
    Thanks
    web dude

According to the specs listed for Sonnet's Tempo Serial ATA controller card, it's compatible with the early PCI Macs - like the 8600, as well as newer G3s, G4s, etc. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 SATA controller card has gotten favorable feedback in the Forums. The 8600's PCI slots are probably PCI 2.0-compliant, whereas the G4 AGPs probably have PCI 2.1-compliant slots. Even though the FirmTek card specifies PCI 2.2-compliant slots, it's undoubtedly backward-compatible. If you just want to use larger IDE/EIDE drives in your 8600, the (now-discontinued) Acard Ultra ATA-66 PCI controller card is an inexpensive solution at $25. Unlike the Acard Ultra ATA-133 controller card, it has the 128 GB limit, so a 120 GB drive is the optimal choice for it. Newegg has a Seagate 120 GB ATA-100 (8 MB Cache) hard drive for $55. I've got (3) 8600/300s and they were one of Apple's better-designed towers, especially with the large cooling fan in the side panel. I installed a G3/266 MHz processor in one, along with a pair of 4 GB hard drives, an ATI Rage 128 graphics card, and FireWire and USB PCI cards. It runs so well and quietly, that I'm reluctant to part with it - in spite of the fact that I rarely use it anymore. With the hard drive mounting plate on the bottom of the chassis floor, it can accommodate more hard drives than the shortened version of the same mini-tower case, used for the beige G3s.

  • G4 Quicksilver 800 MHZ  - Improved Onboard ATA Controller?

    Hello Hello
As I understand it, when Apple manufactured the improved G4 800 MHZ (slightly faster than the 733), it eliminated the onboard ATA controller's restriction that didn't allow the processor to recognize an internal HD of greater than 120 Gigs.
The 800 MHZ systems recognized up to a 500 Gig internal Hard Drive - Correct?
(without going to the option of a PCI Card to rectify the problem)
    Thanx
    Mike

    Hey Tom
    How ya doin?
    Yes thank you:
"The high capacity drive must be formatted using Mac OS X 10.2 or later in order for partition sizes beyond 128 GB to be recognized"
So let me understand this - With my G4 Quicksilver 800 MHZ, my plan was to utilize 2 internal HD's
Format the smaller one (40 Gig), with OS 9.2
Format the larger internal HD (probably about 250 Gigs), with OS 10.4 - and while formatting choose the option to load the OS 9 drivers.
Then hopefully I'll have the best of both worlds:
Boot into the smaller HD that has 9.2, and use OS 9.2 for my older software programs
Then have the option to be able to boot into OS 10.4 for my newer programs that will only work in 10.4
Sound like a plan - so then as long as I use the larger HD for Tiger, the larger capacity drive will be recognized - yes?
    Thank you
    Mike

  • Mega 865 with a ATA Controller card

    I have a Mega 865 with a P4 3.0 GHz, 1GB RAM and a Seagate HD running on Windows XP sp2.
My server crashed so I put the Promise ULTRA 100 TX2 Controller card in the PCI slot after I removed the cover of the Mega. I have 3 disks that get the power from an external power supply connected to the Controller card. When I start the Mega 865 and open Windows Explorer, I only see Total Size 5 MB on each of the 4 partitions that are on the 2 harddisks connected to the IDE 2. When I check through the Control Panel, Computer Management, Disk Management I can see the entire disks. I can enter each folder on these disks, but the PROBLEM is that I can not put any more data there. I get the message "There is not enough free disk space".
Because this controller card works in other computers and so does the disks I think that there is a problem with the Mega 865's motherboard and/or it's BIOS.
Is there anyone who have seen or heard about something like this before ?
Or are intelligent enough to solve my problem.
I don't have the money at the moment to buy a new server
    a picture: http://www.pbase.com/obibobi/image/35413700/original
Edited to be more clear: the 3 extra disks are connected to a EXTERNAL power supply.

I would say further obibobi's actions probably depend on whether the data on HDD-s needs to be preserved or not.
Since I have never heard of "write protect" function in RAID controllers, the described situation seems like a h/w problem to me. having said that, I must admit though that I have never dealt with Promise stuff so far, not to mention ATA RAID controllers.. :(
In case if existing data on disks may be lost, best way forward seems to flush the entire configuration of the Promise controller and to try to re-configure it. Along with that, it may be useful to reduce the existing power consumption of Mega PC as much as possible (e.g. removal of AGP card, clocking down the CPU).
It is not entirely impossible that PSU of Mega can't handle the Promise card...
If existing data on HDD-s must be preserved at all cost, I would try to find a better host system for this disk array...

  • PCI ATA Controller

    Hi,
It seems one of the on-board disk controllers is "burned out," so I need to get a PCI IDE Controller. Do these cards really need to say Mac-compatible? Are they universal cards like USB cards? I was looking at the prices at OWC and they are ridiculous (like the graphics cards--which I need). I was thinking about this one but I don't know whether or not it would work.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Craig

Hello! Don't waste your time with something that's not made for a Mac. A recent post did the same thing and the card would not work. OWC's stuff is pretty good. Sonnet makes an ata133 card but if I were adding a card I'd get the Sonnet 2 port sata because it's bootable and you'll be able to use the newer larger sata drives. Have you tried resetting the pmu to be sure the ata bus is not working? What does the system profiler say about the ata bus? Tom

There is surely a way for me to disable the controller or advise Solaris to stop trying to talk to the missing hardware (DVD drive)?
    Many thanks!

Humm, can you see the DVD somehow in cfgadm -l or cfgadm -lv? If so you should be able to unconfigure or disconnect it from the OS :-)

  • Intel 82801EB Serial Ultra ATA Storage controller?

    Reworded
Bought a new HD. Seagate 80 Gb SATA.
    Installed OK Setup Bios OK
Copied OS to new Drive OK
Selected new drive to boot to OK
Started windows and new hardware found. Not OK
The hardware found was "Intel 82801EB Serial Ultra ATA storage controller".
Driver found in WinNt / inf folder
Comes up with an installation error everytime  "Data Invalid".
It seems to running on a std IDE controller, however I get the new hardware message everytime I boot.
Feels like something set in bios is not recognised by OS or driver is corrupt.
    Any clues
    Thanks in advance
    Geoff

    Thanks for that
Checked everything as suggested on the doco. I cannot see anything obvious. I would appear that windows see's it as a SERIAL ATA controller. However, I cannot find anything on Intel's site that refers to a "Intel 82801EB Serial Ultra ATA storage controller".

  • Intel Turbo Memory 4GB on T61 ICH8M Controller

The little 1GB Turbo Memory on my 4GB RAM system was of little use.  So I had the great idea of buying the 4GB Turbo Memory card so I could use User Pinning.  Unfortunately, I didn't read that it only works with the ICH9M  Serial ATA controller - my system has the ICH8M controller (which only works with the 1GB module).
Now I've got the 4GB Turbo Memory module installed but neither ReadBoost or ReadyDrive are usable.
Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions now to make this work?  It's a type 6459 T61.
    Thanks
    Herschel

In Thailand, There's someone that can use ITM4GB with T61, ICH8M chipset but It can use ReadyDrive only (ReadyBoost not work!).
    You may try this step
    1. Update Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver at  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70477
    2. Double Click Install will extract files to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM\PREPARE
    3. Double Click at install.exe
    4. Restart, press and hold F1 key and Config Sata -> ACHI
    5. Save & Exit Restart & Give a try
With ITM4GB, you can use ITM Dashboard to configure application you want to ITM load, so these app will run faster and they also claim that battery usage time is up about a hour. I don't know it will work for your case or not. Good Luck...

  • Problem with S-ATA optical drive(MSI 875P Neo)

    Ahoy MSIers,
I am in a most dire situation, and before I go to spend money on some computer-tech guy to solve my problem, I thought maybe you could help me.
    *My PC specs:
    Intel Pentium 4 Northwood C 2800Mhz
    MSI 875P Neo
    A-DATA 512Mb RAM DDR 400 * 2(1024)
    PowerColor Radeon 9800Pro
Western Digital Hard Drive 80Gb 8Mb buffer P-ATA
Pioneer DVR-212D S-ATA (The main issue here)
    Bios - AMIBIOS - VERSION 3.31a
    Windows XP Pro - SP2
Until 2 days ago I owned an MSI CD(P-ATA) burner which was virtually dead.
2 days ago, It died completely, So I decided that I will not just replace a CD burner for a CD burner... no! I will buy myself a new shiny DVD burner!
So I bought myself a Pioneer DVR-212D(S-ATA) and I went on with installing it.
I plugged the Serial Power Cable from the PSU to the drive, and connected the drive and the S-ATA port on my M-Board with a serial-ata cable.
I booted up, and found that the device was nowhere to be found although power is being transferred to it(the drive opens and closes when pressing it's eject button).
I searched the net and found that I was supposed to "enable" S-ATA in my BIOS.
Tried that, yet every setting I tried besides the default setting gives makes the computer freeze for a few minutes at the MSI logo and then a "friendly" error massage appears, usually it's something like
"4th master drive ATAPI incompatible" ( the number changes, I haven't got a clue why).
Searched the net a bit more and found almost nothing... most s-ata "problems" were about booting from a s-ata hard drive....
I am getting desperate, So in order to maximize the chances of me getting help solving this issue, I took a few pictures of the BIOS and the inside of my case... maybe it will help, I dunno.
    Here are some pics:
The S-ATA cable connected to the Mother-Board
Back of the DVD burner with the S-ATA cable attached
    BIOS - standard CMOS features
    BIOS - Integrated Peripherals
    On-Chip IDE configuration
    P.S
I have a DVD ROM(Toshiba, nothing special) and I would of course occasionally like to burn Dvds/Cd's from my DVD ROM to my DVD burner. However, seeing as the DVD burner is S-ATA, there is no physical connection what so ever between the two drives(unlike in P-ATA connection where each cable has 3 "connections", 2 for drives(hard or optical) and one for the Motherboard) I really don't know how I can "achieve" this.

A friend of my father's, whose occupation is a computer technician toke a look at the PC and bios settings today.
WE tried EVERYTHING and It still wouldn't work so we concluded that the problem is probably in the hardware.
There were two possible "suspects" here - The Mother Board(specificially the S-ATA controller/ports on it) or the drive itself.
We connected the drive to my sister's computer and it worked like a charm.
So the answer was clear - something was wrong with the board.
I replaced my S-ATA drive for an IDE drive, and all is well.
    Well
that's the end of that story

  • How many ATA drives can I install in an MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard?

I have a MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard ordered with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor to upgrade my current machine.
In my current machine I have two ATA drives.  Will I be able to install both of those ATA drives on that MSI 790FX-GD70 AM3 motherboard or will it accept only one?
I plan on replacing one of the ATA drives with a SATA drive later, but I'd like to hold off until after Christmas.  If not, I'll just have to get by with one drive for a while.
    Thanks

You can always add a ATA controller card to extend it.
    How much do you need?
    BTW, ATA = Serial-ATA or Parallel-ATA = ATA
There is no such thing as an ATA but or and (E)IDE bus.
Many use the wrong naming including MSI.
OK.  Now if I understood Hans correctly, the board has one PATA-connector. To that, I can connect 2 PATA-devices.
Now here is a picture of my device manager:
Can I connect those two Western Digital drives to the PATA connector?
Bear with me.  I'm trying to figure this out.
