Damaged disc

I was installing final cut studio 2 on my macbook pro and the audio content disc 3 is damaged so i cant finish installing. Is there any way I could install pass that disc? Or somehow get what I'm missing?
AND would it be possible to use a final cut studio audio content disc 3 or would that not work?

Have you tried contacting Apple to get a replacement disc? I wouldn't want a damaged disc.

I have an iMac 10.07. Have a damaged disc according to disc utility. What should I do to fix this?
    Thanks,

If you are using Lion you will need to restart your Mac in recovery mode.  Then run disk utility to repair your hard drive.
OS X Lion includes a built in set of utilities in the Recovery HD. Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up. After the Recovery HD is finished starting up, you should see a desktop with a Mac OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" application window. Note: If you see a login window or your own desktop and icons, it is possible that you didn't hold Command-R early enough. Restart and try again.

  • Migration/serial/damaged discs nightmare.. fix?

    OK,
Basically I got stung by the classic 'attempting to migrate logic/other software to a different computer' the computer in question being my macbook pro. I use Logic primarily on my iMac which I bought when my MBP died after being stolen and retrieved (I had originally been using Logic on this computer)
After finding a new logic board for my laptop and getting it semi back up and running I thought it would be very handy to have Logic on that as well, but migration caused both computers to prompt me for a serial on each open.
I then attempted to do complete uninstalls on both computers, only to find out my install now cannot be executed completely from my discs. I think at least one is damaged (Audio Content 3).
So I get error messages saying 'The software could not be installed' etc, however it IS installed and can be opened and used, with several lovely instruments missing albeit no noticeable loss of features besides this.
So I now have an annoyingly incomplete version of Logic Pro on both my systems, and I still have to enter my serial every time on both. It's doing my head in!
    Ideas?

The sheer complexity of your situation (Mac-Mini failed, lots of older And newer Apps spread throughout, failed Migration, etc. )  plus especially your lost Photos and Music lead me to suggest that the problems are now bigger than the two of you as far as cleaning up and recovering at this point.  I would recommend bringing in a proven professional to sort things out and return you to an efficent working system.  (And for the resulting Marital accord...)
    My two cents.
    Hope this helps

  • I have a G5 running Leopard. Trouble starting. Hardware good. Cannot reinstall OS X. Error message 'Disc is damaged'

I have an old G5 that has been struggling at start up. Needed to reboot several times. Ran hardware check all OK. Attempted to reinstall the OS X and get error message ' Cannot install. disc is damaged' Disc looks good, no scratches.

That message refers to your hard drive, not the DVD!
You cannot perform repairs from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782?viewlocale=en_US
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

Upgraded to N95 8GB. So far so good, then !!!. Came back from hols to link with PC to find that the CD drive and DVD drive will not read the disc which came with the phone. PC will still read other discs but not the Nokia disc. What is the disc format and can I get what is on the disc elsewhere?

It's probably just a damaged disc. You can download the PC Suite software from www.nokia.com/pcsuite, as far as I know you can't get replacement CDs.

  • Leopard install disc

The hard drive on my macbook died (13" white with osx10.5.8 installed) I replaced the drive and reinstalled the software but my disc had no installers for iphoto or imovie. The software was on the computer originally. Do I need to purchase ilife to get the software. I always assumed they were on the installation disc and never backed up the actual programs.

The original software included with the computer at point of sale,
was a two-disc installer set. The first disc is a bootable install-
restore disc with most of the original software and the second
disc includes some apps and extras; in some configurations, both
discs would be asked for, in process of restoring the original goods.
Some computers may have included more than two software discs.
Did the computer ship with Leopard 10.5? Some earlier white 13"
Intel-based Macs shipped with a special version of Tiger 10.4. The
    first Intel-based MacBooks shipped in about 05-2006 ~ 11-2006.
The 'Late-2007' MacBook 13" computer was the first to ship with
Leopard 10.5, and Mid-2009 was last to ship Leopard, 10.5.7.
The Mid-2009 version was the transition, as later it had 10.6.x.
The original software install disc #1 would also include an official
version of the Apple Hardware Test in a partition on that DVD; it
requires a different key on start-up to launch, than to boot installer.
If you have a Leopard 10.5 install-restore DVD for that computer,
the disc #1 should have this Apple Hardware Test.
The second disc would have the rest of the applications, including
iLife, and other apps offered with the unit at time of sale.
If you are missing discs or have a damaged disc, you could contact
    Apple Sales by phone, and have your computer serial number handy;
there is a fee for replacement software. 1-800-MY-APPLE. Or you
may also be able to contact AppleCare by phone to get this item.
You should also be able to better define the computer model you have
and other details by using a serial number identifier web site; where a
serial number is entered and configuration info appears on their page.
Or, check the discs you have against the OS X version shipped with
similar Macs by using MacTracker's database app. Download it from
http://mactracker.ca web site and check your hardware version specs.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Installing CS4 Suite Web Premium - Damaged Media??

    Hello,
I've been fighting with my Creative Suite 4 Web Premium Installation and realized that it was because of a corrupt disc.
How do I get a replacement disc so I can reinstall?  My software is registered and legal but I can not find anywhere to download the damaged disc.
Any help would be appreciated. I need this specific version because it will run on my laptop.

My apologies I had the incorrect link in my clipboard.  Please try http://forums.adobe.com/thread/981369.
We no longer provide replacement media for CS4.  Also unless you purchased the download option originally it will not be available under your account.  Even if you purchased the download option it would only be available for up to three years.

  • Why can't I install disc 2 without it saying error

Why can't I install disc 2 without it saying "error in installation"  I'm trying to erase and re-install the OS with the original installations discs.

To exit completely, hit command-Q.  Note, iLife, fonts and printer drivers may not get installed.  If it is a G5 instead of an Intel Mac, Appleworks, some games, and Classic might not get installed. If your PRAM battery hasn't been replaced in 4 years, it might affect installation. You might have a damaged disc, or a dirty drive making some discs unreadable.  Sometimes the installers from the second disc work from the Finder of the installed system, instead of the general system software installer. Printer drivers can typically be found at the printer company's website, though third party drivers might work better*: http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
If you find there is a certain font missing, someone in this forum might be able to help you. Check this user tip both for the version of iLife that came with your machine, and the minimum requirements for iLife to see if your machine qualifies for certain newer versions:

  • One track is always truncated when I try to import

This is the weirdest thing. I am running iTunes 7.7 on my MacBook, although this problem appears to have occurred ages ago when I originally ripped this CD.
It's a store-bought classical CD, which I very much like. When I put it in the drive, it shows up in iTunes, and all of the track lengths show up correctly. The crucial one here is track 1, which is 8:30 long. If I play it from there, I get the whole track, no problems.
If I then import the CD, all of the tracks come in correctly, except this one. It comes in as only being 2:12 long. That is, if I look at the CD, it still claims to be 8:30 and it claims to have successfully imported, but if I look at the music library, it claims to be 2:12, and when I play it, it's truncated.
I checked the start and stop times with Get Info, and they match what I'm seeing -- if I try to set the imported file to be 8:30, it won't let me do it.
The CD was made in 1990, if that's relevant (I was wondering if perhaps there was some attempt at copy-protection denying me a legal use).
When I try to copy the file by drag-and-drop from CD to desktop, I also get an error, so I'm wondering if the file is just corrupted on the CD. (Other files on the same CD copy okay.)
I've rebooted, I've reimported, I've tried everything I could think of. I have no earthly idea what's going on here.
Any ideas? Any way to recover this piece of music if the CD is corrupted such that it only allows playback but cannot be copied?

It sounds like there might be some weird error on the disc. iTunes' ripper isn't necessarily the best for dealing with damaged discs, give this one a whirl:

  • IPod Nano sync/erase with new Mac

I recently lost a hard drive after 18 months (read the cynicism in my tone.) Luckily, I had the Apple Care program and the drive was replaced. I sent out the damaged disc for data retrieval and the company got most of my info back including the iTunes data. I copied the old data onto the new hard drive. When attempting to sync my iPod with the new disc, the message asked if I wanted to delete the iPod data. I tried to manage around this obstacle several times but finally gave up and said, "sure, erase it," thinking the iTunes account info would transfer back to the clean iPod. No such luck. Now I have 49 purchased books that won't transfer to the iPod because it recognizes this as a new device. Help!

With all the media (apps, music and other synced items) on the new computer, connect the iPad to the computer and make a backup by right clciking on the iPad under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up. The restore from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes make does not included synced item like apps and music.

  • Replacing the hard  disk on an iBook G3 (700 Dual USB)

    Hi
I'm kind of regarded as the guy to go and see when anything goes wrong with a Mac, here in Athens, Greece. But I have very little hardware experience with laptops. A friend of mine just brought me her iBook G3 (700 Dual USB), running Panther 10.3.9 to check out. She was getting the initial start up screen (grey Apple, spinning wheel) and once in every ten times or more actually getting into her hard disk. Anyway after a bunch of tests I narrowed the problem down to the hard disk (40 gig, I think). The disc is basically presenting all the symptoms of a damaged disc. I can not even wipe and reinstall on it. When I start up from the Panther system CD, it runs normally, up to the point where I tell it to install, it goes to the next screen where you choose your destination disc, and shows, nothing! Disk Utility on the install disc sees the hard disk and identifies it as an IBM, but the single partition with Panther installed is greyed out. I tells me that the disk can't be wiped because of an ERROR -20. I also tried mounting it on my G4 as a firewire external, and in fact managed to rescue the data, (though it took an hour to transfer 250 kb of data). I even tried to wipe it in my own machine as an external disc, but again the same problem. Strangely enough Disk Utility says the disc does not need repair.
Anyway, I decided to change the disk and be done with it. But as I say I have very little hardware experience with laptops, and the Apple support pages don't have any documents that show the internal workings of the iBook, except for how to change memory and install Airport cards. Aside from the fact that I still have to figure out where to find a new disc for the machine, I don't really want to open it up until I can check some instructions.
Can anyone give me a clue how you get inside these machines? I have a Powerbook G4 manual which does shows how to open it up and change the HD, but I'm not sure how similar these two models are internally.
So I'd appreciate any clue as to the procedure for opening these babies up. Thanks in advance.

It's not an easy thing to do. Arm yourself with a tiny screwdriver and loads of patience:

  • Office 2004 Install and Photoshop Elements

Please forgive my total NOOB inquiry especially since I am an experienced Linux user. I have attempted to install Office 2004 onto a 1 month old MacBook. The disc mounts, I open it, and double click the Office setup assistant. The result every time is that Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 opens, and eventually fails with a can not open the file error. Why is Photoshop elements trying to open it? I also tried copying the entire Office folder to the applications folder (just to see what happens). When then trying to launch the individual Office apps, Photoshop Elements again launches. Please advise. I have googled this to death and found no one with a similar problem. Thx
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 Ghz Duo
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 Ghz Duo

I have basically the same assumption on file
    associations with PhotoShop Elements. I'm
    investigating two paths right now:
    1. How to keep PhotoShop Elements from trying to
open this file type, even though it has no file
extension. I have yet to find where these file
associations are made. Time to read the manual. Is
it done through the App, or OS?
I think it would have to be the OS, but I don't know how you would make use of that info. The only way I know of is to examine thru the Get Info window. If you do a Get Info on the setup assistant, does it have the Open With section? If it knows it's an app, it doesn't even show that section. If it does have that section, it should let you change it from Elements to something else. You may also be able to uncheck the Hide Extension checkbox and see what extension it has.
    2. I'm going to borrow someone else's Office 2004
install disc to see if the installer auto-launches
after mounting and double clicking on the disc. I've
found it odd that my current install disc doesn't
launch. Maybe, just maybe, I have a damaged disc.
    Worth a shot.
Yes. I have Office v.X installed, not 2004. And I just copied it from my old Mac; it's been forever since I used an Office installer disc.

  • Premiere Pro 2.0 Installation Disk Won't Read

I had to re-format my hard drive and when re-installing Premiere Pro 2.0 I found that my installation disk will not read in my DVD drive!  Nothing is wrong with my drive.  It reads all other DVDs just fine.  I get nothing in the directory like the disk isn't there.  It's not a disk problem because they have been stored in excellent condition, and not only will the installation disk not run or open, but neither will the accompanying Total Training Video Workshop disks.  I am completely dumbfounded.  When I purchased this program about 6 years ago off Ebay I had the old 1.5 version on my computer, and had to enter the old registration key along with the new one for 2.0.  Is it possible I have an UPGRADE-ONLY copy here instead of the actual full program?  It's in the shiny new box and all and doesn't say anything on it about it being an upgrade, so it seems legit.  And if it was, in fact, just an upgrade-only program, would that cause the disks not to be read at all in the drive??  I need help on this one because I make my living off editing, and I'm sitting on 3 projects for clients that I cannot deliver on time to get paid, nor have I been able to afford to buy a new CS version.

I have about 8 different burners on my systems, and some will read DVD's better than others will. On my workstation, I have one LG and one Plextor. The LG does the best, and when it fails, the Plextor usually can read. When this happens, I just do a Copy from the drive that can read the disc, to the other drive, using Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden blank media. If neither can read, I have six others to try. Sometimes, it's just the burner.
One little hint would be to make sure that your burner's firmware is updated to the very latest. That can improve the burner's ability to read from a slightly damaged disc.
Otherwise, contact Adobe. For many programs, they sell replacement media. Do not know if there are version limitations, but one call should give you what is available.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
