Damaged Illustrator Files Wanted

Hello Illustrators!
I am currently looking for some damaged Illustrator files. I am looking for files that, for example won't open, open with missing objects or will cause a crash when trying to save them. If you have such a file and it is something that you can e-mail me, please e-mail it to [email protected] Please copy and paste the text below and fill in the info.
If you need to compress the file, please rename the extension from .zip, .sit, etc to .sat and let me know how it is compressed. The email servers don't allow for those attachments.
** Note: If you submit a file, Adobe will
not attempt to fix your file nor will it be returned to you.**
File name:
Error message or behavior of file:
What platform was this file created on:
What version of Illustrator was used to create the file:
Do you recall any information about what could have caused the corruption? (crashed while working in the file, etc):

If the files are too large you can snail mail them to me

File NAme msk126896.ai Created on CS2 on OS 10.4.3. Between 8:10am and 9:10am 11-02-05.
Message: Can't open illustration. The illustration contains an illegal or misplaced operator. Offending operator: 'Data'
Context: a list of 3 digit numbers beginning with 4 (like this 456,498,402,438, 4....)
On this file I had two layers named proof#1 and proof #2. I was working on proof #2 layer, tracing over a customer .jpeg to more closely match the typeface. I started out with loading Egyptian701, and URW Egyptian Bold Wide. I decided on the latter. Set one word on an oval "path", turned it to outlines and adjusted the copy to the .jpeg. All the while I was Saving (but not saving as..). When I was done I went to the layers pallete to make another layer (all text in job as outlines). When CS2 crashed without any warning, it just dissapeared off my d/top. So I proceeded to submit report to Adobe around 9:10am 11-02-05. and re-launched the application. When the job opened, I got the message above, and there was only part of the document left in the one layer that remined. There was nothing left of my illustration, logo, or type. An almost EMPTY File? ! ?
This happened to another file on 10-14-05

A lot of resolutions concerning Adobe Illustrator you may find at: -
    http://www.filerepairforum.com/forum/adobe/adobe-aa/illustrator/383-%E2%80%8Bcorrupted-fon ts-in-illustrator-file-urgent-help-need
How works free method of illustrator restoration look below-
    1. Save the file to your local (C) drive, which will decrease the potential for issues. Open the file in other versions of Illustrator if possible. Placing the file (using the “File > Place” command) into a blank document may also work, although it may require some minor edits to restore the file to its previous specifications (ungrouping, resizing, re-linking source files or changing color mode).
    2. Open the file (if possible) and print as a Postscript file by choosing "File > Print," then choose "Adobe Postscript File" as your printer and click "Save." Open the exported PS file in Illustrator.
    3. Select “Object > Path > Cleanup”, then go to the “Layers Panel” menu and select “Paste Remembers Layers.” Select the artwork and copy, then paste into a new file.
    4. Launch Adobe Acrobat (any version except Reader) and attempt to open the Illustrator file from within Acrobat. If it opens, make a minor edit using the “Select” tool (if possible). Save as a PDF and an EPS,and export as an EPS by clicking "File > Export > Postscript > Encapsulated Postscript." Open these files in Illustrator, or place them into a blank file if opening fails.
    5. Eliminate potentially corrupted elements (swatches, brushes, symbols, links, fonts) one at a time and save the file (under another name) to isolate the issue; reinstall the fonts, create outlines, select all elements and convert to process black. Delete all imported elements and custom elements, such as symbols, and remove custom brush strokes.
    6. Open Illustrator (the same program version that was used to create the corrupt file); save a blank file in the same format (AI or EPS). Close the file and change the extension of both to TXT (not necessary on Mac) and open in a text editor, such as Notepad. Note the point in the corrupt file where the valid data begins: it will be numbers and letters rather than symbols. In the good file, find “%%BeginData” and copy all data before it, then replace the bad data in the bad file. Save, close, and change the file extension back to AI or EPS, and try opening.
    7. Open the file in Photoshop or place into a new blank page in InDesign. This may enable you to salvage text or critical file elements, which you can export back into Illustrator.
    8. A final resort is to purchase a third-party program or service that salvages damaged files. Some options include Recovery Toolbox, Bad Copy Pro and Corrupted File Repair (see Resources).

I cannot open some files from  Illustrator which contain PNG files placed. When I try to open the file, I get a message saying: "this png contains addtional data for Adobe fireworks, which will be discarded upon save." When I press "ok" I get the same screen again. • Illustrator files containing graphs corrupt and will not open after saving

I have created a series of graphs in illustrator and after saving when I try to reopen them, I get the following error message:
Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an illegal operand. Offending operator: 1#INF
This happens whatever format the file is saved in.
    I am using CC.
Any ideas why and how to prevent it happening in the future?

    vnqaa,
If you are saving elsewhere than your own harddisk, that may be the cause. Otherwise, something else has obviously corrupted the files, possibly related to graphs.

  • Corrupted Illustrator files

Recently our IT department copied files from one drive to another on our server. A lot of our files are now corrupted. We are using Windows XP and Adobe CS3. The error I am getting is "Acrobat PRF File Format is having difficulties. Expected a dict object." That is the error I get when trying to open it in Illustrator.
    I have tried the following.
Changing the number in the pref file from 0 to 1 and then holding ctrl/alt/shift when error pops up trick.
Tried placing the file in every program I could think of.
    Tried Distiller.
    Won't open in text editor.
Tried changing from .ai to .eps and .pdf
Normally redrawing isn't that big of a deal except we have a lot of files that got corrupted and that is too much to redraw. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks.

    ms,
Apart from the future precaution of your trying to avoid its happening again by saving to your harddisk rather than externally, as Monika is referring to as a quite likely source of file corruption,
you may try this Recovery Toolbox for free,
    http://www.recoverytoolbox.com/buy_illustrator.html
and licence it (for a year) if it proves to work.
There are ways of trying to recover files yourself, but they are rather difficult and hard to bring to succeed.

This is a case of file corruption.

External media: It is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:

  • Large illustrator file doesn't open anymore, latest version 18

All of a sudden a large illustrator file (800 Mb) will not open because it says 'can't open the illustration' no further reason is given.
Opening the dil in Photoshop succeeds so does placing in Indesign and export the file to pdf and it will open in Illustrator. Though doing this I'm losing my layers (quiet a lot) and specific thickness of lines etcetera.
I'm using the latest version of Illustrator in the cloud on my mac.
Please give me a clue how to be able to use the file again!?

my screen is damaged and I want to transfer my files my laptop

Okay, so what is the problem? Are you asking about making a backup or something else? Are you saying the screen is damaged beyond use, so you cannot enter your passcode? If that is the case, there is nothing you can do about it. If you cannot enter the passcode, you will no be able to create a backup, or sync your data to iTunes.

Printers like PDFs, but you should consult with the print vendor before you save the file in any particular format.  Each vendor is different and have an established workflow.  They may not accept JPGs.  If the poster prints offset, you will need to supply the appropriate resolution per their request or what they require. If the poster is large format or grand format, then they will or should know what resolution is appropriate.  However, large format inkjet only requires 144-150ppi at 100% final size.  Try to get in the habit of consulting with the print vendor early on so you end up supplying what is needed.

    Hi Stephan ,
Acrobat is capable of repairing the damaged PDF' ,however it depends on the requirement as to how do you want to repair them.
There could be several reasons that can damage a PDF.
We need to know the cause that has damaged those PDF' and how exactly you want to repair them in order to assist you accordingly .

  • Creating an illustrator file from an indesign file

Is there any way of exporting or turning an indesign file into an illustrator file. Not by exporting as a PDF or an EPS and then opening that in illustrator. I mean that in one step (through a third party plug-in in indesign maybe) an indesign file can become an actual illustrator file, headers and file icon looks like an illustrator file etc?
    Thanks, Tim

I'll try and clarify as best I can. My hands are a bit tied with confidentiality rules at my company. I guess the best way to put this is we have an automated workflow using indesign server. We want to supply some of our products as actual illustrator files but all our assets are indesign files.

  • Placing an Illustrator file from a newer version into an older version of InDesign

Is posible to place an Illustrator file from a recent version (like Illustrator CS6) into an older version of InDesign (like InDesign CS5)?. I don't have the software right now to test it so I want to be sure.

    Should be fine.
