Damaged Library File

Last week I opened my Itunes to find a progress bar pop up and tell me it's importing my itunes music library.xml, this takes a few seconds then a new box pops up with:
'The file itunes library does not appear to be a valid itunes library file. Itunes has attempted to recover your Itunes library and renamed this file itunes library (damaged).itl' I click OK then itunes starts up with only 10GB of music as oppose to the 20GB I have before this happened. I have tried renaming the damaged file but without any success. All my music is still on my HD but not only some is in my Itunes Library.
Any suggestions to get this fixed would be great, thanks.

+"I tried both your suggestions but without any luck or success."+
Not sure I understand. The first option takes the non-corrupt XML file and attempts to rebuild your complete Library.
If you do not have an un-damaged XML file, you have no choice but to rebuild your Library from scratch, losing your ratins, playcounts, playlists, etc. From your post, it seems you did not do this second step.
First:
a) Check that there may be iTunes created backup copies of you Library XML and ITL files. These would be located (usually) in the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder under the "iTunes" directory. Try looking there for the Library Files.
b) If you have the files either overlay the ITL file (copy-paste) from the "Previous" folder into the 'iTunes" folder (do this with iTunes closed). You can also use the XML file from a running iTunes as I described in my first post.
Second (if you do not have either of the above good files available) you'll need to follow the steps below to rebuild you Library:
‘Refresh/Rebuild’ Your iTunes Library
These steps will re-initialize your Library for you. Read it completely through and do the small trial run prior to implementing the whole thing. You will lose your Playlists, as well as reset your Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes. If these are important, post back and instructions on saving these (as best as your Library has) can be provided::
First, make sure that iTunes is correctly looking in the right Folder for your song files.
--- Make sure you know the current location of your music files (best to confirm this)
--- In iTunes choose: Edit==>Preferences==>’Advanced’ tab
--- Select 'Change' and browse to the music folder in your PC drive (if it isn’t already)
--- Click OK to save that setting
-- In iTunes: Edit==>Preferences==>’Advanced’ tab.
---- Make sure that the 'Keep iTunes Music folder organized’ box is checked (if you want iTunes to organize your folder structure)
---- Also, that the ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’ box is unchecked
-- Click ’OK’ to accept and close the Preferences dialogue box.
-- Single click on the "Library" in the Source Pane
-- Single click first track in the Library
-- Select all songs (any one of several ways)
-- Delete – or select ‘Clear’ (yes, delete them all)
There will be 2 dialog boxes that pop up (one at a time). The first one asks ‘Are you sure you want to remove the selected items from the list?’ The second asks if you want the files moved to Recycle Bin or to keep them in the iTunes folder. You DO NOT want to send the files to the Recycle Bin, so select ‘Keep Files’. This will only delete the song reference links (both valid and broken). It will not delete the actual music files on your hard drive.
IMPORTANT:
Perform a small test of this prior to doing it en mass. If you do not receive both dialogue boxes, then stop and see this link prior to continuing. You will need to reset your iTunes preferences and also retrieve the ‘deletion test’ song files from the Recycle Bin. Scott P.: My Source List is missing (or, resetting the prefs)
Also note: 'Deleting and Restoring' the song references will reset the Play Count, Ratings, Date Added, Last Played, Ratings, and EQ attributes (there may be a few others). It will remove all song references from any Static Playlists you have. Also, any Smart Playlists that depend on any of the aforementioned attributes will be impacted. This may be a small price to pay to recover your Library -- or not.... You can ‘Export’ your Playlists to an XML file for ‘Importing’ after the refresh. This can restore your static playlists. The export only saves the song info, not the underlying music files. Of course, exporting your playlists is to be done before you delete any song references within iTunes.
Once your song references are removed from iTunes, this is how to get them back:
1 - In iTunes: File==>'Add Folder to Library'
2 - Browse to your main iTunes folder and select it
3 - For multiple music file locations, repeat 1 & 2
Depending on how small/large your music library is, the speed of your computer and your amount of RAM, this could take a few minutes to a few hours.
Your library should now be back to normal.

  • How can I fix a (damaged) library file?

I just upgraded to itunes 5 last week. I opened itunes yesterday and it said my library file had been damaged so it renamed it with (damaged)and gave me a new library file without any of my custom playlists, etc... I lost a playlist thats really special to me, is there any way for me to repair my .xml library. I've tried renaming the (damaged) library to the regular library and itunes finds it and says its damaged... Also, I don't think all of the songs in my music folder are showing up. I own alot of CDs and it's going to be a huge pain to go through my 6400 songs and make sure every album is showing up in my .xml file..
Does anyone know a way to fix/debug my damaged .xml library?

    Liz hello,
    for your info....
What are the iTunes 4 library files?
The iTunes library is a database iTunes uses to organize your music. Two iTunes library files are created and maintained by iTunes for different purposes. They're both in the iTunes folder.
    iTunes 4. - 4.8
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes 4 Music Library
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes 4.9 - 5.x
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
    iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library
This file is a database of the songs in your library and the playlists you've created. Some song-specific data is saved in this file. If you delete the file, iTunes creates a new, empty copy when you open the application, but any playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you created is lost. The iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library file is only used by iTunes.
    iTunes Music Library.xml
This file contains some (but not all) of the same information stored in the iTunes 4 Music Library/iTunes Library files. The purpose of the iTunes Music Library.xml file is to make your music and playlists available to other applications on your computer. In Mac OS X other iLife applications (like iPhoto, iDVD, and iMovie) use this file to make it easier for you to add music from your iTunes library to your projects.

  • I have a damaged library file, and a few questions?

My laptop shut down instantly because of a charger/battery problem and when I started itunes up again I got the message (importing itunes music library.xml) I thought it was going to double my library so I clicked stop and when itunes opened only half of my collection was there and all playlists/smart playlists are gone.
Can someone give me some advice as to how I can bring the songs back into my library with all of the tags I have edited, (Album, Comments, Sort Album, Genre etc..)
I had the option to copy files to itunes music folder checked, so does that mean that every edit I made in itunes would change the file names in the music folder?
I still have the Itunes database file - (iTunes Library (Damaged) (date modified 15/01/2012 12:02). But there is no exact file called (itunes music library.xml)
I do have a some sort of document with that name listed as an XML Document (date modified 15/01/2012 13:55) (about 2 hours after the problem occurred) but it just opens a webpage. I can also open it in a notepad etc.. and it brings up loads of encoding detail.
Is there any way to restart that XML import?
I am sure I still have most of, if not all of my music, but it's very important for me to get back the tag info.
It would also be great if I can get back the smart playlists and date added, but this is the least important.
I'm in the middle of a slow process of transferring the itunes folder to my old laptop to see how it looks before I make any changes here, but I'm not sure how many songs I had exactly, do you think there would be any reason songs got deleted because of this? There are no songs in my itunes collection stored in folders other than the itunes folder.
You are saving my life if you can help me here.
    Thanks.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps youshouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Itunes damaged library file

My itunes has been working reasonably well but I have had many issues with it crashing over the last year or so.  I just got a Sonos device and after having problems with indexing my songs the support guy looked through my itunes folder with me and we found a load of library files as follows:
itunes library (Damaged)   Created 15 Sep 2012, modified and last opened 16 Sep 2012
itunes Library Extras.itdb   Created 16 Sep 2012, modified and last opened today
itunes library genius.itdb   Created 16 Sep 2012, modifed and last opened 8 Dec 2012
itunes library.itl               Created 8 December 2012, modifed and last opened today
itunes library.xml             Created, modified and last used 15 October 2008
itunes music library.xml    Created 18 May 2009, modified and last used today
We moved all of these files up a level to the music folder, which didn't help with Sonos, and the support guy at Sonos then suggested I 'Reset' my itunes folder location in the Preferences.
THe issue with Sonos was that it was picking up some but not all of the songs and I couldn't see any sort of pattern to it.  The number of songs I have is fine and there is very little if any DRM left in there.
It looks as though I need to do something to sort out these library files but I'd prefer to get some guidance from you guys on this forum.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    David

All these files should reside in ~/Music/iTunes. You don't need the damaged file, or the iTunes library.xml file. That is an old library file as yu can see from the date. One troubleshooting step that sometimes helps me is to delete the iTunes Music Libray.xml file and let iTunes rebuild it. Although I'm not really sure it will help in your situation.
The other question I would ask is about the format of the music that isn't bring found by the Sonos device. Are you sure it works with the files that aren't bring recognized?
I'm afraid I don't have a lot of input beyond that, though.

  • Damaged Library Files/ itunes unable to save library file

I would really appreciate it if somebody would take the time to read this and help if possible. We have 4 Ipods in my family and all of us are experiencing this problem with our libraries, so you can imagine the frustration.
I get this error message every times I open itunes:
    1st: This appears: "Importing I-Tunes Library.xml....."
2nd :"The file ITuneslibrary.itl does not appear to be a valid ITunes library file. ITunes has attempted to recover your ITunes library and renamed this file to "ITunes Library (damaged).itl"
When Itunes opens there are no songs in my library.
I can rebuild my library and all my playlists but it continues to happen on subsequent openings of the program and it will attach a number after the (damaged).....and will just add on numerically each time I get the error.
Once I rebuild the library and playlists, a process that takes hours, I get this
    error while in itunes:
"The itunes library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1450)"
Thus, I am continually starting completely over with my library, playlists, etc every time I connect my ipod or go into itunes. I have tired removing itunes and reinstalling the program but the same errors occur. This has been happening for several months. I have seen numerous posts on this topic but nobody every answers. We have 4 Ipods in my family and all of us are experiencing this, so you can imagine the frustrtation. Can anybody help?
    Thanks

Look man, I've had a personal experience with this error myself, and I know how frustrating this is. I have found a very probable solution, so this is my post from another thread that should hopefully solve your problem. Believe me, I know first hand what this error does. Here it is....
"I may have found a solution for some of you and possibly me for this problem. I found this article while searching google and it seemed to make perfect sense. It's an issue with memory or virtual memory. Cuz this "error" seemed to appear after I had nearly 2000 songs in my library. I don't think it had enough memory to save the library because it was way to big.
Here's the article: http://sonnoprofondo.net/tech/2006/41 I'm pretty that's the only problem causing this error. Good luck!"
*Let me know if this was your solution*. I just know first hand what this is entails and how I've spent many nights trying to get rid of it. Now, I'm trying to help anyone I can because I don't want other people to go through what I had to. Best of luck!!!
*Here's a thread that may also be of help from this forum.*

Btw, this isn't guranteed to work, but it has fortunately worked for me. It seems to be an error specifically with windows for some reason. itunes has worked flawlessly for me now for about 3 weeks and I am very happy. If it doesn't work let me know and i'll see if I have any more suggestions. Again, good luck!!

  • Error message 13026 the itunes library file cannot be saved? and damaged fi

this just started to happen today--i tried to open ituens and then it said that the library was a damaged file and i basically had to re-upload all of my songs, vids, etc over again. Now when I try to organize my library an error message: 13026 comes up that in essence says that the itunes library file cannot be saved an unknown error has occured. When i did upload the library again, half of the album art never appeared.
My questions are has anyone else experience this? How should I fix this? Should I uninstall and reinstall itunes completely?

Hi there - I am having similar problems, I keep on getting damaged library file error messages, which means I have to reimport my entire music collection files again after deleting the damaged library files. Obviously I lose my playlists every time. I've also had to uninstall and reinstall Itunes several times. I have checked permissions on my iTunes folder as well as the Itunes Library Genius file as above and have 3 types with full control: Fiona PC, Fiona PC administrator and System. I can't seem to change individual permission types away from everything being allowed. Is this part of the problem? would appreciate any help, thanks Fiona.

  • Library file corrupted

    Hello.
I opened iTunes the other day to receive the message that my "iTunes library file is damaged".
My first option to fix this problem is to simply start again, but I did not want to lose all of my playlists and playcounts so I have been trying to sort this problem out with the old backup 'library files'.
They work just fine, the only problem is that the backed up library files contain information from a time when my library was on my first HDD, but since then I have moved it to my second HDD.
So when I use these old library image files, my whole library (all 6,000 songs) have the little exclamation symbol and are not in the right location.
My question is whether there is a way to direct iTunes to where the library is now, instead of where it thinks it is. I could do it file by file, but that could take years with 6,000 songs...
Any proposed solution that could let me use the backed up library image file would be awesome, it would be great if I could keep my playlists somehow.
    Thanks in advance
    Windows Vista

    Katrina,
Thanks for your reply. It was very helpful. Would you know what I could do about a damaged library file. Everytime I open Itunes it tells me I have a damaged library file and renames the library file to something damaged.rtl and says it tried to extract any info. it could from the damaged library. This happens everytime so numerous damaged library files are created. Do you know how to repair a damaged library?
    Thanks

  • ITunes Library File Damaged; How Do I Get My Playlists Back?

My PowerMac G4 was in Sleep mode, and the power went out in my house for two seconds. iTunes was open when the computer went down as was Stickies. Upon starting up my computer, I found all of my Stickies memos were gone, but worst of all, I got a window telling me the iTunes library was damaged, so I had to go through a new iTunes setup. After iTunes found all of my music files (nearly 10,000 songs), I now have all the songs retrieved but my hundreds of playlists are gone. My 80Gig iPod still has all of the playlists, but of course, if I sync it with my computer, I'll lose them from the iPod. Is there any way to get my playlists back without having to go through the arduous task of creating them all over again in iTunes? Help (And thanks in advance to anyone who can offer me some enlightenment...)

  • ITunes 8.0 - damaged library (.itl) file

    Help!
Last night I downloaded iTunes 8 (8.0.1 I believe). The first time I opened iTunes, it created two library database (.itl) files. One is now called "iTunes Library (damaged)" and the other is "iTunes Library." The damaged file seeems to be unusable. I guarantee all of my music is legit.
What I find is that iTunes now only contains a third of my music. All of my music is still on my PC, and my iPod is fine (though it still has the old data as I don't want to sync it until I hopefully restore my library). It's only the .itl file which is somehow corrupted or missing data.
The question? How do I restore my library? Can I get it from the iPod? I have spend years categorizing my music and I have 4,000 songs. Recreating the genres, ratings etc. would take days.
I run Windows Vista on a PC.
Thanks so much for any help.
    Andrew.

If it keeps happening, it will probably happen when you go back to v7.
Check your security software - something is preventing itunes from saving the ITL/XML library files properly.
Norton is a very bad culprit for itunes upgrades on not saving previous settings that allow itunes.
Other typical reasons for the ITL/XML not saving properly are
    1) 3rd-party plugins for itunes that share the itunes XML file
    2) Vista permissions have gone wonky and you no longer have full control over your music folder & its subfolders

  • What is causing this?  The file "iTunes Library.itl" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged) 4".  This happens everytime I start iTunes lateley.  Help!!!

Everytime I open iTunes lately...I get all my music thrown out of the library and this annoying message come up...The file “iTunes Library.itl” does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to “iTunes Library (Damaged) 4”.  Is this how an apple works?  It doesn't?  Why all of a sudden is it doing this?  Please help.  Thank you.

Did you happen to bring this iTunes library over from a windows machine? You might read this kb article to see if it helps http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

  • Once again - upgrading iTunes - reports library file damaged, all missing

So, I've finally figured it out. When ever I upgrade iTunes, the new version doesn't like the old library file and marks it as damaged.
All content is lost - as far as itunes is concerned. But it's right there on the hard drive. In the itunes folder.
Making a new library file and point the preferences to the content still results in nothing showing up.
No, I have not sync'd since this happened. I have many files in the itunes folders on my HD where the content is not loaded on my itv4.
Is there a magic key combo to have it 'look' at the actual HD contents in the itunes folded and 'find' it ?
No, holding down SHIFT when launching itunes and then creating a new file is not the solution, nor selecting the old library file (says it's damaged).

For general library squiffiness following an upgrade the easiest thing is to restore your last backup, but I guess if it were that simple you wouldn't be here.
    *Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash*
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the *Previous iTunes Libraries* folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename *iTunes Library.itl* as *iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl* and then rename the restored file as *iTunes Library*. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch (Windows) or Music Folder Files Not Added (Mac) and Super Remove Dead Tracks (Mac) for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working *make a backup!*

  • Updating iTunes damaged my library file

I left iTunes to update, and after restarting my computer, I got a message that popped up saying that the library file had been damaged.
The only advice I got came from this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967
...which says to revert back to an older backed up library. Unfortunately, the latest library I have comes from November of last year. If someone knows how I can restore a more recent version of my library from say... last week, please say.
If I can't do that, I'd rather just have iTunes scan and add my music over again, losing whatever song ratings/playlists I have. (I'm not sure how to do that either, thank you.)
I still have all of the damaged files in my recycle bin, as well as an iPod which is synced with the ideal library, if there is a way to make use of those.

Thanks, but recreating the library from the xml file didn't really do it either. I looked into CopyTrans, but I'm not sure I want to pay 20$ for something I'll only end up using once. I might just delete the entire library and then start re-adding everything, assuming I'll be able to access my purchases again.
I thought that iTunes had an option that scans and adds all of the music on your computer automatically. Does that exist or do I need to add my albums one by one?
Also, can someone tell me how to authorize the library to have access to my purchases so that I don't have to rebuy them?

My computer crashed when I was using Itunes.  I got everything up and running and got this message "The File “itunes library.til” does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file.  iTunes has attempted to recover your itunes library and renamed it to “iTunes Library (Damaged itl)”  Everything loads up put in takes 10 min. then my music playlists are deleted everytime I turn Itunes on.  What can I do to solve this problem?  Thanks.

    Hi shyanne23,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  If your iTunes library file has become damaged in some way, you may want to try recreating your iTunes library and playlists by following this article:

My itunes library suddenly that the file “iTunes Library.itl” does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to “iTunes Library (Damaged)”. I use an external hard drive for my Itunes.

  • Damaged Itunes Library File

    Hi
When I opened my itunes today I discovered that only a third of my total songs were displayed. When i look under my music it says that the itunes library file has been damamged. Any know how i fix this, have I lost all my music?
    Thanks
    Gordon

I am suffering the same problem. I DO love apple products but please fix this terrible problem with iTunes, it's making me sick. I find myself backing up the .itl and .xml files under the iTunes folder almost every night because I fear losing them, which happens about every 3 to 4 weeks, no matter if I do upgrade or not to a newer version of iTunes. It used to happen when I clicked on upgrade, then I learned to make a full backup before upgrading and the problems seemed to fade away (all i had to do was upgrade then restore the .xml and .itl files if they were damaged during the process) but all of a sudden today, with no clue as of what was happening, the library got corrupted.
I can see all of you have Windows Vista, just like me, do you think that can be the cause???
