Damaged logic board

My Macbook is dead. I initially thought that I had suffered a HD failure after installing Leopard, but I took my laptop in to a repair shop, and they informed me that my logic board has sustained water damage. To my knowledge no water has ever been spilled on the computer, but it was used in a cold environment for a while, which I suppose may have caused the damage. The quoted repair cost? $1250. Not only is this way outside my price range right now, but I could also just get a full replacement laptop for that kind of dough. Also, my one year warranty is up and I don't have AppleCare.
Does anyone have any cheaper suggestions for replacing the logic board? Thanks.

Well you can ask your homeowners/renters insurance if they will cover the water spill. If you purchased by credit card sometimes they extend the warranty on your machine. Specs are very specific about environmental conditions which are too harsh for the machines to be used and the owner manual usually indicates those environmental conditions as well:

I don't know if any of these repair places take Canada based requests, but you can ask:

Good luck!

The most frequent RAM vendor recommendations are Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC).
With respect the logic board, you could ask Apple about a "Fixed Price Repair" which will generally repair everything that is wrong with a Mac.

Power supply partially expired on my 2.3GHz G5. Have found a donor. Manual says remove logic board before power supply. But you could remove power supply with board in situ on older G5s...........any ideas?

I've heard of some trying, possibly succeeding.
However, I wouldn't want a damaged logic board with my new PSU........

  • Logic board liquid damage of macbook pro retina display late 2012

there were water spilled on my macbook pro 13" retina (late 2012) and I sent it to apple service in Trieste, Italy and they said that the logic board is damaged and I need a new one with a new top case.. which costs as buying a new macbook..is there any suggestions or alternative cheaper way to fix it?!
i will in any price cheaper than buying a new one..

I see nasty corrosion on that logic board
whoever told you they could genuinely "fix" it , lied to you
I also know for 100% certain theyre not going to desolder any of those micro-connections and add new components.

MacBook Unibody A1342 no power after water damage to logic board
Ive sustained damage to my logic board after water damage. Can anyone tell me if it can be repaired or what the parts which have fallen off do(looks like 2 tiny capacitors?) . Magsafe has green light and battery charges but machine shows no other life signs. any help would be most appreciated thanks

    @CoccoBorg:
I need your help, please. I spilled wine on my mid 2009 unibody macbook pro, now when  I power up I see Hard drive light On, I hear fan noise, but don't hear any startup Apple chime and nothing on display, I cleaned the logic board with 91% alcohol, but that didn't change anything. Before cleaning the logicboard, their were no signs of wine on the logicboard, but there was a lot of wine on the keyboard black sheet.
    My guess is:
    1. The keyboard might be causing this behaiour, I wan't to bypass the keyboard, can you please confirm if these are the right power pads on logicboard?

    2. You mentioned something about fuses, where will I find them on logic board?
    3. Any othe suggestions will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Keys 5-9 no longer work after water damage. Do I need a new logic board?

I had the smallest amount of water on my fingers when I typed something on my keyboard and now keys 5-9 no longer work. Will I need a whole new logic board for this? I've been into two Apple stores and both say I need to book an appointment online. I've been online and tried to book in at three different Apole stores within my area and I just get 'there are no slots available' how am I supposed to get this fixed if I can't book a session to see some!?! Sort it out Apply, it's why your products cost so bl**dy much isn't it!?

thanks, but I really don't think its the logic board since I can still plug in head phones and i can hear movies, etc.
also when i don't have my magicJack plugged in to make calls they now give you a magictalk dial pad to make calls and when i plug in the headphones again i can talk through the speakers and be heard and I can hear them too. Is there something I can used to maybe pull out the connection. I think it thinks the headphones are plugged  in all the time.

  • 13 inch mid 09 MBP will not boot in safe mode or os disc. originally kernal panic but now blank screen. is this logic board? no liquid damage.

I upgraded the ram and hdd a while back(RAM first with no issues, then hdd around 2 months later). The computer started freezing a few days after the hdd upgrade.
I reformatted the hdd and it worked fine for a few weeks then same freezing issue. Instead of wiping the drive again I repaired the disc and this had it fixed for about a month. I was booting in safe mode for a few days with no issue and went about uninstalling 3rd party apps. Then the Kernal panic issue started, When I inserted the OS cd the screen went blank and has not come back on after repeated boots.
Can we put this down to logic board and if so can it be repaired rather than replaced?
    Thanks

    thanks for the reply,
just reinstalled the factory RAM and HDD. Same issue of blank screen. At the moment i have no way of connecting to external monitor.
The OS cd is still in drive and i can hear the drive spinning for a few seconds at the start but it stops after about 20 seconds.

  • Facetime issue - after installing a new logic board due to liquid damage.

I installed a new logic board this week.. after installing the os x operation system and then upgrading it to mavericks and i used migration assistant to load my backuped user from an external disk.
I tried to log in using my apple id ( which is verified) it couldn't log in beacuse "could not sign in. please check your network connection and try again"
and i did all the updates of mavericks. i tried also before installing mavericks i thougt upgrading will fix it..
    i saw on forums that i should add 2 DNS's (8888 and 8844) didn't work.
i tried connection to my phones hotspot - didn't work.
i also went to the firewall thing to allow it recieve cennections..
    pleassee help!!
is there a way to reinstall the facetime or something?!?!?!

My problem solved could possiblly be your solution: Check to make sure your system serial number is being read by your logic baord.  If the tech forgot to reenter the serial number, it's a known issue for Facetime and Messages (apparantly not know enough yet though, no tech bulliten exists on the topic).
I spent several days trouble shooting my inablility to login to my account with Facetime or Messages (other cloud services worked) after upgrading to Mavericks.  I went as far as doing a clean install on my hard drive after spending two hours with a baffled mac tech in a retail store and many hours searching the message boards.
I have never had a logic board (or hard drive) replaced on my Macbook Air, but somehow after the Mavericks update the logic board stopped reading the serial number on my system.  It took a call to Apple and a ticket opened to engineering to figure this out (after I uploaded log files).
They were puzzled I experienced this without a logic board replacement, but it was indeed the root cause of the facetime and messages apps failing to log in, and said they'd run in to it recently more than once.
Wish I knew how to post this unbiquitously across all the boards for folks to troubleshoot by simply looking at their system info in the Apple menu; Apple scheduled an appointment for me at an Apple genius bar and it was fixed in fifteen minutes.

  • Would I be able to boot from USB on my Macbook Pro if my logic board was damaged?

My macbook pro recently started to slow down, programs freeze, etc. Odd behavior. So I decided to install a clean version of os. My hard drive came up as corrupt, I need to repair. So I did that. And was unable to install to os. It starts up and then says that the installation has failed, but yet I'm able to install it on an external hd and boot from that installation. Is it my hard drive? Or is something wrong my logic board?

If you can successfully boot and run OSX from the external harddisk but not from the internal harddisk, then it is most likely that your internal harddisk is defect and not the logic board.
Nonetheless you should run the Apple Hardware Test Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test to check your Mac.
It might be that the internal SATA-harddisk connection is defect.

  • Water damage a logic board

I spilled water on the laptop and i clean it immediately, but maintenance expert told me that he must change A logic board
I am in ksa now What is the cost of reform with Apple and what's the best way to send the device
    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

Liquid spills are never good for electronic equipment... and the MacBook Pro has a number of liquid sensors under the hood. I'm sure that's what the maintenance expert' has seen. And, yes, the only remedy is (usually) to replace the logic board.
If you've an Apple AASP in your country (https://locate.apple.com/country) I would let them fix your computer.
    Good luck,

  • Why in the world does it cost sooo much to replace a logic board for your water damage macbook pro? As if apple hasn't made enough money to allow some people to save some money for their laptop..

Why in the world does it cost sooo much to replace the logic board for your macbook pro.
As if apple hasn't made enough money to allow some people to save some money..

Do you think Apple should reward your clumsiness or lack of caution by giving you a logic board for free, or at cost? Come to think of it, shouldn't they just give you a free new computer, and be grateful to you for taking it off their hands?
Apple isn't a charity operated for the benefit of the careless.

  • IPhone 5S 32GB Logic Board Repair

So several months ago I attempted to repair the cracked screen on my black 32 gb iphone 5S on my own. It did not work out. I ended up breaking the logic board and now the phone is basically unusable. I've been using my iPhone 4S for the past few months and it ***** so bad. I just want my 5S back but now apple won't touch it and no one offers repairs for the logic boards on the 5S that I can find. Anyone know of a solution or someone who offers the service. Because I can't stand the crap battery on the 4S and I miss my 5S I had only had it for like, 2 months.

I know of 2 services that repair logic board damage depending on your issue and your location in the U.S. One is eDigitalNY which is on the east coast and offers their repair services on eBay in addition to their website. They guarantee their repair work. Just ship them the logic board (shipping to and from is included in the repair cost) and they will fix it. If for some reason your board is "toast" and can't be fixed, they will refund your money. The second option on the west coast is The Repair Stop. Like eDNY, all repair work is guaranteed. TRS is a bit pricier but they are the go to guys for water damage repair, an area of repair from which many others shy away.

  • Problem with Logic Board in a Macbook Pro 15" 2011 in Argentina

Hi I am from Argentina and I am reporting a problem I've had a few weeks ago:
I was working with my computer (MacBook Pro 15 inch Late 2011) and it suddenly stopped working; the screen was frozen. I proceeded to restart it, but it couldn't enter the operative system, showing a gray screen.
Given this huge problem, I took my MacBook Pro to an authorized support centre in my country (Mac Station, 1184 Ayacucho , Buenos Aires - Argentina). The people there told me that the Logic Board was damaged. For this reason they set a budget of 2.440 dollars for the replacement part – plus the installation cost of 120 dollars. They were trying to charge me the equivalent to a new MacBook Pro model MGXC2LL/A purchased in the USA.
On the web it is documented that the 2011 MacBook Pro has recurrent failures on the Logic Board. How can it be that the total cost of repair in my country is five times the cost of repairing it in the United States? I think their official resellers in Argentina are taking advantage of us.
How I can get in touch with Apple support or someone who can give me a reason for that cost? Can I recieve official Apple answer in this comunity?
In advance: I haven't got Apple Care because Official Reseller from Argentina said me that Apple had discontinued in South America.
    Maria Emilia
    Buenos Aires, Argentina

Thanks muchly will check it out now.
