Damaged movie file

My computer crashed yesterday as I was in the process of editing a project in Final Cut Express HD. A few minutes earlier I had imported a movie file into the project that was located on an external hard drive, and after I was forced to restart the computer this file could no longer be viewed in Final Cut Express or even opened on its own in quicktime. I'm guessing that the file was somehow corrupted by being open in a project when the computer crashed. (the project was not saved in between me importing the file and the computer crashing as it was only a matter of a couple of minutes). In FC express I get an error (34) message. In quicktime I get a 'the end of the file was reached' message when I try to open the movie. Any idea if the file is recoverable? It was only the one file that was damaged.

How simple would it be to recapture the file ? It might be quicker than finding if the file could be recovered.

Is there a way to recover a corrupted .mov file?
    Please Please Please help !

    Hello,
Corrupt movies like yours can be recovered. It's quite hard, you have to rebuild the movie index.
There's a free application called Treasured to diagnose and preview your damaged movie files:

In what file type and compression format did you download the YouTube content? I.e., to avoid such issues, you would normally download the source files as content that is natively compatible with your target player or convert incompatible file type/compression format combinations to files that are compatible with your targeted media player.

  • Is there any easier way to edit imovie files that have been exported as mov file then added to FCE 4?? As every move I make has to be rendered and takes forever??? Also my recording is going out of focus without me touching the camera, why has this happen

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

Sounds to me like the file is probably corrupt. If you had hard drive corruption or damage, that could easily result in recovered files not being fully intact. If you were trying to recover accidentally deleted files, it's possible they might have been partially overwritten before recovering. There are never any guarantees with file recovery.
Without more information on the circumstances that led you to try recovery, it's hard to give advice on what to try from here. You could always try another file recovery tool, like Data Rescue 3. Just be sure you're taking appropriate precautions when doing recovery. See Recovering deleted files.

  • .MOV file won't open in quicktime

    I have a Macbook Air OS 10 version 10.7.2 , Processor 1.68 ghz intel core i5, memory is 4gb 1333 mhz ddr3.
When i drag the .mov quicktime movie file into quicktime player i get this error message: "The document could not be opened. the movie's file format isn't recognized."
What do i need to download to make quicktime play this .mov file?
    thanks!

Quicktime isnt a very good movie player.  At all.  If the file isnt corrupted, and is actually a valid file, then I would download and use VLC Player.  It plays nearly every format of video file, and is completely FREE.  It IS possible however, that the file you are trying to play is damaged in some way, and wont be played by VLC either.  If VLC wont play it, the file is no good.

  • How to repair damaged DBX file of outlook express?

I am currently having 4 GB data available in inbox.dbx. But there is one problem with that. I am not able to see my mails as header corrupt the dbx files. This is very annoying. I tried many things to solve the problem from my side but it was not helpful
to me. So I am leaving the question over here so that I can get the response from you people that what should I do to repair the damaged DBX file of outlook express. Thank you so much in advance for reading and replying to this thread.

The manual solution starts with finding or locating the corrupted DBX file(s). You need to start the Registry
Editor to find the location where Outlook Express stores its files. Follow the steps given below to know how to do this:
Press Win+R to open the Run window.
    Type regedit into
    it and press enter.
The Registry Editor window will be opened. In the left hand side pane, expand the folders in
    this manner:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Identities > XYZ > Software > Microsoft > Outlook
    Express > 5.0
Now in the right hand side pane, locate the Store Root settings from the list and double-click
    it.
The path will be shown where Outlook Express stores its files. Copy the full path from there.
Once you have copied the path, you need to move the mailbox file(s). Follow the steps given below to know
    how to do this:
First of all close the Outlook Express program if it is opened.
Now paste the path (copied earlier) on your Windows directory and press enter.
You can copy or move all the files from this location to a new location. After that, delete all the files from the
original location if you have copied them.
In the third step, you need to import the DBX file(s) into Outlook Express. It would be easy for Outlook
Express to import the file(s) without causing any trouble. Follow the steps given below to know how to do this:
Start Outlook Express on your system.
Click on File menu > Import.
    The Outlook Express Import window
will be opened. Select the Outlook Express version in the list from which you want to import the emails. If you are unsure with that, you can select Outlook Express 6. Click on Next.
Now click on Browse to select the directory where the files are saved. This is the very same
directory in which you have moved the files from original location earlier. Click on Next.
Select the items you want to import. For example: you can import All folders or the Selected
    folders. Click on Next.
Now start your Outlook Express and check your mailbox folders again.

  • How can i repair a .mov file?

I have some important .mov files i have been using in FCP but have mysteriously become damaged and can no longer be read by quicktime or more importantly final cut.
Is there any software out there to repair mov files?
The files are still around 1.2gb each so the information must still be there?
Any help appreciated as this is quite an important project.
    Chris

Not likely. Media files have a nasty way of not being completely rebuilt. But my favorite data recovery tool is Data Rescue. Note you will need a drive large enough to hold the recovered files. Do not recover to the same drive.
    http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/1133
    http://versiontracker.com/php/qs.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=data+recovery& srchArea=macosx%7Cmacosx-all&submit=Go
You have not provided much information but your main concern will be trying to figure out what happened to your files. Is the drive media damaged? Are they bad copies? And what is your next plan if recovery fails? You have only a 50/50 chance that it will succeed so start trying to figure out the next step.

  • Problem importing MOV files into iPhoto

I am getting an error when importing my iPhone mov files into iPhoto -- "The following file could not be imported. The file is in an unrecognized format". However the file plays ok with Quicktime.
Can someone help me with this? Its a brand new mac and I have the latest iPhoto too.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto 11 & .MOV files

    Hi all,
I have recently upgraded to iPhoto 11 & now cannot import .mov files (whereas I could before).
I am doing in the same way (import from camera), but when it gets to the .mov files states that it is an unregognised format.
    I have tried:
    1. Different users
    2. copying manually to desktop & importing from file menu
    3. as 2 & drag & dop
    Any help would be great

Sounds like your original library is damaged somehow. Let's try fix it:

  • After updates my iMac OS X 10.6.8 won't read certain .mov files

After updates on my iMac OS X 10.6.8 .mov files shot with the JVC HD200 will no longer play!  Everything was fine before the updates.  I keep getting the error message:  invalid public movie atom.  I was told it may have been from the iTunes update so I deleted iTunes and both versions of quicktime that I have and reinstalled earlier versions.  Still no luck:(  Any suggestions??

Based on the behavior my theory is that one or more of the Quicktime codecs has been damaged.  FCP7 installs a variety of codecs that don't come with every Mac which gives you additional format support.  You should not need to purchase that component as it is part of the FCP7 package.  That suggests to me that 1 or more of the FCP7 installed codecs is damaged.
At this point I would suggest 3 things:
    1. Install the combo update as a I suggested above if you haven't already (If those don't work then reinstall the last update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1400)
    2. If you have a complete backup of your system (like with Time Machine), restore the contents of /Library/Quicktime/ from the backup from before the update was installed, restart the computer and see if it works.
    3. Post your issue in the FCP7 forum and ask how to completely remove and reinstall FCP7 and all it's components (last I checked it requires a complete Erase and Install but I'm not a FCP person so ask the experts first): https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_stud io
Side note: If the files open in VLC and you don't want to do all the above work right now (up to you obviously), you should be able to save the files out in a readable format by going to File > Exporting / Streaming Wizard.  Personally I'd try to get your system back the way it was by taking the above steps but you have to balance your immediate need vs. time spent to fix this long term.
    Best of luck to you!

  • Password required to delete or move files in Mavericks - permissions

I have the problem  where when I try to delete or move files, I get asked for a password.  I've read the various old threads on this problem, and tried the following fixes:
    Using Disk Utility, repaired permissions
Booting into the passwork reset utility (holding cmd-R on startup), and resetting permissions
    Changing the permission on .Trash
    None of this worked.
I began exploring the permissions on my files and on all of them, info reported that the file permissions were generally set as:
    everyone - Custom
    (Me) - Read & Write
    staff - Read only
Sometimes there was an additional entry of  everyone - Read & Write
In reading about permissions, I couldn't figure out what that "Custom" meant.  If I did an ls -l on that file, I got -rw-r--rw-@
I have found that if I reset the permission for everyone to Read only, and make that Custom privilege go away, the passwork requirements for that file also go away.  If I use the Info panel, if there is a second everyone entry, I have to remove that by setting it to No Access.  Only then can I change the upper everyone privilege from custom to Read only.  But that fixes the problem for that file.
So, here's my ask.  How do I do this over all my files?  Executing CHMOD 744 (filename) does not remove the everyone - Custom privilege, and thus doesn't fix the problem.

As I've explored this further, it's apparent that this is an ACL problem, where the everyone deny delete ACL permission is being set. (Not sure of the right terminology here.) This can be cleared with the command:  chmod -N (filename)
For some reason, this has propagated throughout my file system, creating havoc in applications.  Dropbox won't update because the files can not be changed, bookmarks in Safari can't be removed, etc. I've fixed the application problems for now with chmod -R -N ~/Library but there's no telling what other damage I may have done by removing all the ACL permissions from all those files.
The question I'm chasing now is what is changing the ACL's on these files.  It appears that the ACL settings are inherited from the folder, but when I check the folder properties with Get Info, I don't find anything.  What am I missing?

  • Can´t render/read mov. files

    Hello,
I just upgraded from cs4 to cs5 and I discovered that cs5 won´t let me render anything that has to do with the quicktime codec. I tried to render some h.265 mov files but seconds after I started the render I got a error message (error code: -1610153464), after that failed attemped to render a mov cs5 refuses to read any mov files in my project or and refused to import other mov files so that I had to restart the program. I get a message saying that the "MooV" file is probably damaged. I tried every mov. codec and a lot of mov. files I got, to exclude the chance that it has to do with one of my mov. files I used. CS4 has absolutely no problems reading the same files or rendering mov files. Rendering avis, tiff-sequences etc. in cs5 works fine.
I already tried to reinstall cs5, but still got the error message.
System is OS X 10.6.3 on an i7 iMac. (German Adobe Production Suite)
    Any ideas?

Have the same problem. one both macs. Don't now what to do.

  • Why won't my .mov files play?

Hello, I need to convert .mov files into another format, but I can't even play the .mov files on my Mac w/Snow Leopard and Quicktime 10.0. Why is that? What do I need to at least play them back on my MacBook Pro? Thank you, gharaldson

There's a number of reasons that they may not play.
.MOV is what's called a "container". Namely it stores audio and video streams in any format and then includes descriptive information about that data to help select the software (codecs) required to play them back.
A QuickTime movie won't playback if it's: a.) not actually a quicktime movie, b.) a damaged file (data is corrupted), or c.) the content was encoded using a method that isn't part of standard quicktime.
Generally speaking, if you use Quicktime or Apple applications, then they will encode audio and video using one of the mechanisms built into Quicktime. However, it's possible to create valid Quicktime files using other software that uses encoding mechanisms not in the standard Quicktime bundle. Software like FFMPEG and VLC can be used to produce such files, for example.
Do you have an error that indicates the nature of the problem?

  • Cannot import .mov files (from JVC HM100) into After Effects CS6

    Hi,
I am trying to import .mov files into After Effects CS6.  Unfortunately, when I try to import the .mov files, AE tells me "After Effects error: 210_0001_01.mov cannot be imported -- this '.mov' file is damaged or unsupported."  The file works in Premiere CS6.   I have the latest Quicktime, and even with Quicktime 7 Pro installed, I got that same result.  I would appreciate any advice on this problem.
    Thank you.

I'm going to set up a new sequence with just the clip I'm using after effects on.  I'm going to import that sequence into AE.
Your footage is currently a long-gop codec, which may be giving Mocha fits.  So instead of Dynamic Link, you may want to simply export the clip in question from Premiere using a lossless codec.  Remember to leave handles on the footage.
To get back to Premiere you would then render in a lossless codec.  It's not very handy, but it will get the job done.
Give it a try and see what happens.
