Thanks for the feedback Rick :-) It's very much appreciated. I am trying to structure the information as clearly as possible but it is surprisingly difficult to work long sections without pausing. Perhaps I should make it easier on myself by breaking it into mini sections that I can rerecord and finese, and then edit into a longer piece.
I think I will have to get used to the trickery of television and remember things do not need to be in the order that I do them. I was not entirely sure how the final look would be as I was just playing but you are right it could have been at the start to give a teaser of the outcome. As an introduction I could have recorded that section once I had finished and cut it to the front. Plenty of thought for me as I embark on these.
I think if time allows I will certainly edit or rerecord. Effieceny is good not only for getting the information out quickly but also to keep my bandwidth costs down.

Dancing Elf

Currently, I am doing Serge Jesper's dancing elf tutorial at http://sjespers.com/blog/2009/11/13/video-tutorial-elf-yourself-yourself-personalized-vide o-on-the-web/ with Adobe Flash CS6 trial. I have successfully follow according to his steps with a video I download. But the head movie clip keeps falling over. Is there a way to rectify the head? As a test, create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane.

Log out and log in to the new user account. Try running Safari or FireFox to do the same things you did before that caused this problem to occur. Does the problem recur in the new account?
If it does not, then the cause is something in your normal account. If it does recur, even in the new account, then the cause is something at the system (OS) level. Please post back with the results of the above test; you can focus your trouble-shooting based on the results.

URGENT - Dual Xeon or high-end i7 & GTX or Quadro?

Hello,
I'm planing to build soon a new configuration for AE and i really need answers.
My usage of after effects is very cpu intensive (motion graphics, lots of 3d, light effects, and so on) + using a lot of scripts.
I was wondering... which option will give me the best results in those conditions?
One I7 980x with 24 go of ram
or
Two Xeon 5520 with 24 go of ram (or maybe 36go for this case)
I can't find a real answer on the web. I was first planning to get the dual xeon. Then I've realized that IF after effects use the cpu as extra amount of core, it won't be so usefull to me (especially regarding the fact that i'm using a lot of object relative expression - meaning failing with MP rendering enabled). Otherwise, IF AE use both cpu in a additive way, it will worth it (I mean, IF I don't need to enable MP Rendering to take benefits of both cpu)
I have also another question regarding the Quadro FX 4800... Since the Quadro CX is discontinued, and since it was an improvement of the FX 4800, does the FX 4800 will perform as well in AE CS5 than the CX was in AE CS4?
I'm not really carring about encoding in H.264... My care is about beeing productive and gain strong reactivity in the viewport, as fast uncompressed renders.
Please do not deviate with HDD importance, or stuff like that... I got all my answers on that. I really need more info on the Dual Cpu vs Single and the Quadro vs a simple GTX card.

That's still a lot of frequently used things. So it may worth it. I guess that using quadro instead of geforce will improve stability.
And i guess that using High End quadro instead of geforce will provide faster answer....
Anyway, if anybody have experienced the FX4800 into AE and compare it to the video posted on the nvidia website... that would be great....
Because the real question now, is to know if a Quadro could challenge a bi high end cpu computing... if no, or not so much, quadro are definitly not interresting for AE in this case.

Where can I find a tutorial about Show Folders Hierarchy?

I have Permiere Elements 11 which also has the Elements Organizer as part of the program. And I have Photoshop Elements 10 also. The Elements Organizer with the video editing program is what I'm interested in though. I think my folder hierarchy is not right. I'd like to straighten it out but I don't know how. Can someone direct me to a tutorial on how to work with the Folders Hierarchy.
This might be a different question, but it might be related to my confusion about the Folder Hierarchy in the Organizer. On June 10 I was copying some photos from my hard drive to the Organizer - probably a dumb thing to do. While I was doing this, the Pictures folder (View and organizes digital pictures) no longer took me to all my photos on the hard drive. The Pictures folder is under Personal Folder, Documents, Music, Control Panel on the Windows 7 desktop to the right of the Start Menus stuff.
When I click on Pictures now I get two folders: Adobe and Pictures. The Adobe folder has these values - Size: 0 bytes; Contains: 0 Files, 1 Folder; Created: Monday, June 10, 2013; Attributes: Read-only (only applies to files in the folder. I deleted the Abobe folder several times but it keeps coming back.
What I would really like to do is to restore my Pictures folder to its original state so that I will have access to all my hard drive photos immediately instead of clicking around in those folders. I vaguely think that something I did to the folder hierarchy in the Optimizer has messed up other things on my computer.

Cross dissolving in Final Cut Pro 10.0.8

Hi there, seriously struggling with cross dissolving in Final Cut Pro 10.0.8.
The problem is simple: I don't know how to do it, and I can't find the option to do it. Right clicking doesn't give me the option to 'Add Cross Dissolve'. I eventually found it by clicking 'Lift From Storyline' and then clicking 'Add Cross Dissolve' but I can't navigate it at all...I'm trying to cross dissolve from one clip to another without it fading to black in between. Can someone help me, or point me in the direction of a tutorial? I've been looking for ages now and not found one that I can use!
This is how it looks at the moment...The clip on the left fades to black and then the next clip starts really suddenly, neither of which I want to happen, but this is the closest I've got after hours of trying to make sense of it!

Lift From Storyline is not what you want, as you've found.
Command-T
Highilght the In or the Out point of a clip, the default transition (Cross Desolve) is applied to that edit point.
Hiighlight a whole clip, or series of clips together, the default transition is applied to all In and Out points for all selected clips.
In the Transition Browser, right-click a cilp and select "Make Default Transition" to change which is the default.
In the Transition Browser, select the "All" catagory in the left column, the first one listed is the one currently set at the Default Transition.
You can also drag-and-drop from the Transition Browser, or highilght an In or Out point, or a single or series of clips, and double-click a transition in the browser.

Compressor and dissolves -- a definitive answer?

I’ve been reading through many online forums, and although I see this problem posted often, I have yet to read a well-informed answer. Most of the solutions are based on guesswork or contradictory answers. To begin with, I am using FCP 4.5, OS X 3.9, Compressor 2, and DVDSP 3.0.2, and like many people I’m surprised by how poorly mpeg-2 encoding from Compressor renders fades to black and dissolves. I’m basically going from an edit in FCP to compressor and then to DVDSP.
I could be more specific in how I am editing my project, but I’ve seen this problem apply to progressive, interlaced, NTSC, and PAL projects. It also seems to apply to projects that are exported directly from the timeline, and to those that go through an extra quicktime step. Also, this problem has nothing to do with upgrades (I have a clean install, and keep my updates, well, updated).
Some folks blame compressor, while others blame mpeg-2 in general. It seems to me that it cannot be mpeg-2, because thousands of DVDs are produced every year with near-perfect fades, so the problem must lie somewhere in the software.
Is there any definitive source as to how to produce reasonable fade in mpeg-2 (book, forum, online tutorial)? It seems strange no one has nailed this down in any forum.

in FCP I find the results with Compressor v1.2.1 to
be v. good - that is to say no blockiness and a
professional result to the level of supplying DVD to
clients who express satisfaction.
Apart from C v.2 and OSX I use the same ver. of Apps
as you - I suspect the C v2 is the culprit. Have you
tried going back to 1.2.1 to see if the problem
persists?
I'd like to go back to Compressor 1.2.1 because that worked fine. But I'm having difficulty installing it. When I used the DVD Studio 3 install DVD, and try to install just Compressor (DVD Studio 3 is still on the hard drive in a "Previous Version" folder), it seems to install but never shows up. And when I try to install both Compressor AND DVD Studio Pro 3, it says the installation was successful, but NO Compressor appears in the Applications folder.
Any suggestions?

Link to tutorial on VITs

I've been programming in LV for a couple of decades but have run across an new area I have had zero exposure to. I am having to fix/support an application written to handle multiple data streams across a network. It uses VITs. Can someone point me to a reasonable tutorial/description of VITs and how you set them up, etc?
I am a bit stumped since the code has zero documentation. There is a queue (been there and done that) but it appears that they are pushing a cluster into it and magically there is another instance of this VIT. An example or link would do wonders. I've done a bit of searching but maybe I'm not using the correct magic incantation (key words)

In terms of incantations I have found placing the entrails of an unspotted goat on the keyboard at moon-rise to be highly effective...
But seriously though folks... VITs are just VIs with a different file extension. The key difference is that when one is opened (manually or programatically) you get a copy of the routine in memory. Open it 10 times and you get 10 copies of the same code.
Now to your specific problem... Look at the code that is dequeuing the cluster. That is where to start looking for the code calling the VITs.

Dissolve from One Image to Another

I followed this tutorial:

To create the banner ad at the bottom of the page. I've able
to do everyting except dissolve from the earth image to the flash
logo. I downloaded their sample file, and it looks like the flash
logo is a movie clip, on which he used a mask layer to create the
dissolve effect.
I don't know much about masking and haven't been able to
replicate the dissolve. Can anyone help me out?

If you put the logo on top of the earth I wonder if you
really need to use a mask (a mask is the part that it shows of the
layer underneath). Just a simple motion tween with changing the
alpha could be enough.
Try not to use the mask and see how it looks. After that you
can try putting a layer on top of the logo, change it to a mask and
put the shape that you want to show in the mask layer. After that
look at the movie again.

Layers' problem in tutorial

If part of a layer seems hidden behind another layer you may have to move it up in the layers panel or change the blend mode. In the layers panel you can move the position of the layers by dragging and dropping them into position. If you post a screenshot of your layers panel someone may spot the problem you are having.

Light Trails with slow-mo dancing

Hello all,
I am trying to make some light trails emit from people's hands as they dance.
I am using AE CS5.5 along with Trapcode Particular.
The footage is of a guy hip hop dancing that goes from full speed to super slow speed done in Motion (FCP Suite). I am just doing the animation someone else is editing it the footage together and doing the slow-motion.

The problem I am running into is, as you can probably see, 2 things:
1. Whenever the clips goes into super slow-motion, the trail gets really short, especially the second time through.
2. Right before it goes into the super slow-motion, the trail kind of freaks out, gets less "smooth" and goes wherever it wants.
I have the movement of the hands rotoscoped/keyframed each frame to follow the hand. I think I may know why the trail gets short, because it's a particle generator and not a actual "tail." But didn't know how I could do it like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC564dRMO1M that clearly goes from full speed to slow motion without any problems.
I have tried putting in keyframes and having the life of the particle go short to longer depending on the speed, but doesn't seem to work. I also have tried eliminating (and adding) keyframes in the super slow-motion part to see if it would help. It didn't do anything either way.
I also tried another tutorial found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNUGj07DpF8 But it definitely didn't do what I needed it to do. The light layer (Emitter) wouldn't stay with the null object.
The only idea I have is get the full speed clip, do the light trails, then have them slow it down.
Any ideas on how to fix both of these problems, so it is a consistent length (even just a longer one) and doesn't "wig out"? Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope. Thanks in advance.

Exactly that. You are also misunderstanding how Particular works. Short version: Whenever you keyframe something in Particular, it affects only particles born at that time or later, not existing ones. Therefore changing the life or velocity won't close the gaps. You could only try the Motion Path Feature, but this imposes otehr limitations which also may not resolve your issues...

Cannot put dissolve/iris into timeline

When I edit my movie i cannot put dissolve/iris into the "timeline". I did however succed with doing it in one frame, but cannot do between any of the other frames (between edit points)?

It is not working because you are trying to put it between 2 complete clips.
If you cut a second off the end of each clip where the transition will go, you will find that it works.

Here's MY favorite explanation:
It's late on a dark and stormy night and you've been driving down a lonely road. You're stopped by the local police on a flimsy pretext. They ask if you've been drinking. You say no.
They ask you to get out of the car, walk a straight line, which you do; but you wobble a bit because you've been sitting in the car for hours.
So they ask you to close your eyes, put your arms straight out in front of you and touch your fingertips together. If you get it exactly right, you cannot dissolve. If you blow it and your fingers overlap one or two joints, that's the possible length of your transition.
