Dancing pixels in large black areas of my new 30 inch ACD

I posted this on a thread in the 2004 forum, and then thought to post it here since I just bought my 30 inch LCD new from the Apple Store yesterday.
I have a dancing pixel / pixel static problem, which happens whenever there are large black spaces on the screen, such as the black computer name screen saver, or the black screen where you enter your password to get back into your account from secure sleep. The dancing pixel static also appears in Terminal windows that are set to have a solid black blackground.
To deal with this problem, I just decided to set my Terminal and gvim backgrounds to dark grey. This seems to be a tolerable solution. I also took all the firewire and USB cables out from the back of the display, which was proposed by Apple support as a fix to this sort problem last year, as someone reported in the forum.
I still have to deal with the dancing pixel static in the short interval between the time I activate any screensaver with a hot corner, and the appearance of the same. And the static is all over the place when I try to get out of the screen saver and have to give me password.
I think I can live with that as long as the problem doesn't get worse... Anyone have a similar experience?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

OK I went to the Apple Store today and they let me trade it in for a new 30 inch LCD. This one is definitely better. There is some pixel static still in large black areas. But much, much less. I hardly notice it, though I can if I look for it. But overall I'm very happy with it now. I love the screen. 30 inches really makes a huge difference.
I wonder though what's the deal with large black areas that causes this to happen on the LCDs.

  • Brand New 30 inch has major pixel issues

    I hooked up my new 30 inch ACD yesterday. It was working fine until tonight. Now there are blue and green pixels all over the place. They are outlining every icon and window and distorting every picture and graphic.
    I rebooted and changed display preferences. No luck.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks

    Thanks-
    I found a discussion where many folks were complaining about the same thing. One fix was to put the computer to sleep and wake it back up. That worked. odd. I hope I wont have to do this regularly.

  • How can I select an area of a picture (larger than one pixel) and find the average RGB values of all the pixels contained inside the area?

    I'm analysing the differences between several different images and I would like to select a large area of each (such as with lasso tool) and find the average RGB value of all of the pixels within the selection area made/

    With the selection you could do a copy paste and use the histogram of the new layer set the histogram source to selected layer.  The eye dropper sample size may also to get the average  of a square area around a point.

  • Red Pixels in Black Areas

    I just purchased my MBP last week, and so far things have been pretty good. Just one minor issue that I can't seem to figure out; at times when I am viewing black areas, they have a bunch of little red pixels inside them. It's not that the pixels get stuck, I can scroll the images and the red pixels stay in the same area of the picture.
    Has anyone else had a similar situation or a solution?
    http://h.imagehost.org/0620/Screenshot_2010-08-04_at_12_10_52AM.png

    When I look at it, there are little red pixels all over cat's paw. I will have to actually take a picture of my screen with a camera. The red areas sometimes flicker, but it's never a big botch of red, just a lot of nearby pixels. It is not the image, I can see the image clearly on my PC, on here there are red pixels on it.
    I will take a photo and post it ASAP.

  • Detection of black area size

    for a project i am working on i have used filters and blob detection to seperate blobs from my background resulting in a binary image. part of the project requires checking the pattern for the presence of blobs in the raster. in my raster any completely black area of about 8x8 pixels or larger signifies a missing blob.
    i have tried using the pattern learn and find VI's to find these areas. but these VI's require contrast in the image.
    so, my question is: is there any way to search an image for the location of a black area of at least the specified size on a largely black background?
    on a side note, i am currently using labview 7.1, and as a student there is verry litle posibility of upgrading any time soon.
    any help would be appreciated.
    Jasper

    i wish it were, but the problem is that for this part i'm not interested in the blobs. i am interested in the spaces between the blobs, i'v added a simple image i threw together in paint that roughly shows the situation. the red outlined area is what im interested to detect(note, the red outline is just for example, normaly there is no contrast there what so ever). the main problem is that im trying to detect a black area on a black background, the only distinct characteristic of the region is its size.

  • Cropping a black area?

    I´ve seen there are some scripts here for Cropping and straighten photos from a scanner. But i have a particular problem where i need to remove the black border and leave the black area as transparency for a large number of photos, but leaving the photos unstraightened. I wonder if anyone can give me an idea on how to do this. For reference i post the script i found before for Straightening and cropping.
    #target Photoshop
    app.bringToFront;
    var inFolder = Folder.selectDialog("Please select folder to process");
    if(inFolder != null){
    var fileList = inFolder.getFiles(/\.(jpg|tif||psd|)$/i);
    var outfolder = new Folder(decodeURI(inFolder) + "/Edited");
    if (outfolder.exists == false) outfolder.create();
    for(var a = 0 ;a < fileList.length; a++){
    if(fileList[a] instanceof File){
    var doc= open(fileList[a]);
    doc.flatten();
    var docname = fileList[a].name.slice(0,-4);
    CropStraighten();
    doc.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    var count = 1;
    while(app.documents.length){
    var saveFile = new File(decodeURI(outfolder) + "/" + docname +"#"+ zeroPad(count,3) + ".tif");
    SaveTIFF(saveFile);
    activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES) ;
    count++;
    function CropStraighten() {
    function cTID(s) { return app.charIDToTypeID(s); };
    function sTID(s) { return app.stringIDToTypeID(s); };
    executeAction( sTID('CropPhotosAuto0001'), undefined, DialogModes.NO );
    function SaveTIFF(saveFile){
    tiffSaveOptions = new TiffSaveOptions();
    tiffSaveOptions.embedColorProfile = true;
    tiffSaveOptions.alphaChannels = true;
    tiffSaveOptions.imageCompression = TIFFEncoding.TIFFLZW;
    activeDocument.saveAs(saveFile, tiffSaveOptions, false, Extension.LOWERCASE);
    function zeroPad(n, s) {
    n = n.toString();
    while (n.length < s) n = '0' + n;
    return n;

    I have similar data, but a different scripting/action need. I need to label each scanned image with it's filename and place it on the photo, within the photo frame (in some cases, old aerial photos that have been scanned) or within the bounds on new digital photography. Basically, the script I have now is putting it in the black area either completely or partially depending on how much the image is rotated. It's the simple AddFileName.jsx and places the text based off the percent from the left and top values that I put in. The problem I'm running into is that the rotation of the photos changes with each one due to the flight path of the aircraft that took the photos and I'd like a script or an action set that I can use to get PS to detect the pixels immediately within the black area (i.e. on the actual image) and then place the text layer based off that "edge" and the parameters (size, color, etc.) I've set. If there is a way to get the script to determine the first "non-black" pixel and base the placement of the text off of that, then that would probably work. I'm not as concerned with the angle of the text, although it would be great if I could get it to align with the edge of the actual photo and not the bounding box.
    My scripting skills are novice at best. I'm comfortable with recording actions and wouldn't mind a combo of the two automation capabilities. For image examples, you can use the ones already provided in this post. We're dealing with similar imagery.
    Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

  • Shimmering + Dancing Pixels

    I'm not sure how to trigger this and it's driving me nuts! At first I thought i was tired and seeing things, but then i looked closer. Occasionally my iMac displays a few dozen red pixels jumping around and dancing in once concentrated area. This is usually easier to see on black and sometimes occurs when I'm waking up my machine from standby; other times at random.
    I know that this was a video card issue with certain iMacs, but my serial number falls outside of the range of known problematic units. When dealing with applecare, do i need to be able to trigger this dancing pixels issue to show them what i'm talking about? Applecare time is ticking!
    Has anyone else had the same issue?
    Thanks for any input!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    If the pixels move, your video card is bad so your logic board will need to be replaced. You will need to contact Applecare and get the ball rolling. As long as you initiate the call before your Applecare runs out, you should be ok even it takes longer for them to be convinced of the problem.

    Does anybody experienced such issues?
    Thanks

    This was using a Medium VBR, 2048 kbps.
    These are really big areas - not like usual compression artifacts. Image 1cm by 2cm wide kind of areas, made of big black blocks. Like 8bit sprites from some ancient video game started flying around in the sky
    Hmm... incidentally I've noticed the black blocks tend to happen in large bright areas like skies - what could that mean?

  • I get red pixels in the dark areas when converting duotone images to RGB

    Hi, I have been using Duotone with my photos, but since the other day, everytime that I process a photo this way, when I convert then back to RGB mode, the dark (black) areas of the photo become a kind of bitmap of red pixels. I have tried with many different photos from RAW or JPEG files and I get the same result with all of them. This is an example of the issue. The original is on the left.
    What may cause this? The photo looks good in duo tone. It is when converting to RGB when the corruption happens.
    Thanks

    Not following you:  why are you converting from Duotone back to RGB?

  • Adobe Reader X prints large black spots in large documents

    I have a user with Windows XP SP3 and Adobe Reader X.  When he prints a catalog with images, it randomly prints large black spots throughout the document.  If I print one of the individual pages that had black spots, it prints fine.  Are there any known issues that would cause this or does anyone have any suggestions?  He is printing to a Toshiba eStudios 5520c copier.  No one else has the problem printing to this printer but, he is the only one using Adobe Reader to print catalogs to this printer.  Everyone else printing catalogs to this printer use at least Adobe Pro of some version (the versions differ between users).  I have increased the size of the page file and reinstalled the printer driver.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks for providing the information.
    Could you please try and reinstall the printer driver on this user's machine and see if it solves the issue.
    Also, do all PDFs with images produce the same output from this user's machine?
    Would it be possible for you to share any such PDF? I have sent you my email address as a Private Message.

  • Large black regions obscure CNiGraph3D plots

    I am trying to plot 3D mesh data in dynamically created CNiGraph3D objects within a modal Wizard window in an MDI application. The Wizard window is a CPropertyPage object within a CPropertySheet (in Wizard mode).
    The meshes are being viewed in the XY plane only and there can be from 1 to 20 CNiGraph3D objects on the wizard page at any one time. Each graph object has the same dimensions although the graphs are resized if any are dynamically added or removed. Scroll bars are added to the wizard page if the number of viewable graphs exceeds the available space.
    The problem occurs when scrolling is attempted. A large black region can appear over the whole width of a graph obscuring the mesh plot. When you attempt to intera
    ct with the obscured graph an unhandled exception / access violation occurs and the application crashes. I have traced the crash in debug mode and it comes from OpenGL32.dll.
    I have Visual Studio Service Pack 4 installed. Other Measurement Studio objects that I'm using work fine so I'd rather see if I can get help with my current configuration before updating (and changing) my system to SP6.
    Any help with this would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

    Dear David,
    The same thing kind of happened in HiQ
    This issue is likely related to your PC's video driver. The 3-D graph in HiQ 4.x for Windows leverages OpenGL, a 3D graphics standard that can rely either on your video hardware or software.
    Try each of the following suggestions in turn in an effort to correct the problem.
    1) Try turning up the hardware acceleration in device manager for the graphics card, then restart the machine and run the example again.
    2) If you are running Windows 98 or Windows 95, try changing the Video acceleration feature to "None." To do this, go to the display settings page in your control panel and choose the Settings tab. Click the Advanced button, and on the next dialog, choose the Performance tab. Move the acceleration
    tab to the far left.
    3) Try switching to a standard VGA video driver. If the 3D graph works, the problem is likely a bug in your video card driver; make sure that you have the latest driver for your video card.
    4) Try switching color depth or display resolution. If the 3D graph works, the problem is likely a bug in your video card driver; make sure that you have the latest driver for your video card.

  • My photos are pixelated when I put them into another new document such as a photo collage.  I am trying to put a regular 8x11 image into a 4x6 photo collage of two other images.  All come out blurry.

    I need help! I am trying to put several photos that are large size 8x11 into a small 4x6 new document photo collage.  When I do my images are blurred or pixelated.  Even my fonts in the new document are pixelated and my photshop brushes as well.  I am a novice so I may be doing something wrong.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I have the dinosaur PSE2 but the method should be the same in 11.
    Image > Resize > Image Size  (the path to Image Size might be different in 11). This brings up the window:
    The DPI is in the Resolution box. Enter the new value. Check the Constrain Proportions and Resample Image boxes and click OK.

  • Dancing pixels, new heat sink, then no video at all

    I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card with a 23" Cinema Display and a 15" Cinema display running from a Geffen ADC/VGA adapter. I'm have a dual 500MGHz G4 running OS 10.4. It started off as the dancing pixels on the screen. A few green spots here and there, then it got worse. Then there were green and red bands up and down my monitors. I opened up the case and saw that the fan on the heat sink had broken off. I bought an aftermarket fan and heat sink and installed it with no problems. When I booted up the computer there was an ATI icon on the main display where the apple logo usually is. There was also a part of the logo that was blinking red. Maybe it meant that the power supply was inadequate but I don't know. Then the computer froze on that logo. I tried to reboot a couple more times but then the computer just wouldn't boot at all. Anyone else have this problem?
    AL

    It's OK- happens to the best!
    Unfortunately, the continuing screen artifacts could be caused by heat damage to the GPU done while the old fan was down. Heat damage to the chip is usually irreversible.
    As for the second monitor, it also could be a victim of heat damage to the card. Does the monitor show when you "detect monitors", either in System Preferences/Displays, or the ATI Control panel?
    And, you have verified that all your connections are secure?
