Dang DVD drive refuses to open

Gday Evry1,
Went out today and bought myself a shiny new DVD Burner. An MSI DF4-A. Installed it, the computer recognised it, but no matter what I tried, the drive tray would just not open. When I either pressed the eject button, or tried to eject it in Windows Explorer or Nero, the system would just hang after a while. Once I staved off the urge to throw the damn thing off my 2nd storey balcony, and watch it smash into a hundred satisfying pieces I tried swapping the drive to the primary master and slave, then the secondary master and slave. I then formatted my hard disk partition, and reinstalled Windows XP.
Have been playing Postal 2 now for a while, and for the time being evil thoughts are being kept at bay.
It hasn't worked. I have now packed it up into its box, and put it out of my sight, but if I dont come up with something soon I fear for my own and my housemates sanity. :-)
The drive is certainly powered on, as the lights flash at boot up, and again when you try to eject the tray in Windows. The IDE cable orientation has been checked and checked again, I have farted about in the CMOS setup but still no Dice. Turned the system off, and tried the old paper clip in the emergency hole trick, and the tray workings appear much stiffer than they should be. Its damn difficult to actually manually pull open the tray as well after the clip has been inserted.
Please help me. Please............

  • Portege R935-ST3N02 with Windows 8 DVD Drive won't open and doesn't appear in Explorer

I have seen posts concerning this problem under Windows 7, but my new laptop came with Windows 8.  The button on the DVD drive will not open it.  I can force it open using the paper clip hole, but the computer does not recognize any CD or DVD that I put in the drive.  Anyone have ideas on what I should do?

Turn off your laptop, unplug all wires, remove the battery, and hold the power button for thirty seconds. Afterwards, reattach the battery and connections.
If that doesn't work, check if it's listed in the Device Manager.
    Windows key + x > Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives
If it is listed there, try right-clicking it and selecting "Uninstall." Then reboot your computer and see if it works.

  • My dvd drive won't open so I can insert a disc.  It has opened in the past by pushing the button on my mac

I can't insert any dvd's because my dvd drive won't open when I push the open key.  It has always worked in the past.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

It's possible there is a CD/DVD in the drive that's stuck. Open Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities. Do you see a CD/DVD in the drive? Try ejecting using unmount.
If that fails, restart and hold down the mouse button whe restarting.

  • E440 CD/DVD Drive Won't Open

Hello. I bought a Thinkpad Edge E440 and it came yesterday. However the CD/DVD Drive won't open. If it do the paperclip trick, it will, but when I press the button it just makes a few noises and then nothing, if I right click the drive and press eject, same result. Any suggestions please?

take reasonable care in doing so....insert it about an inch or so
I saw that you posted the suggested paper clip trick as a solution, but it does not work for me. my machine is a new (2011) hp. i do not think it matters that it is a bluray drive. any other hints would be hugely appreciated

  • My CD/DVD drive will not open

My CD/DVD drive will not open when I insert any type CD/DVD. The CD/DVD just runs but will not open.

    Try cleaning the lens:
Use a DVD lens cleaning disk.
Use a few shots of compressed air in the slot.
Wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth?) around a business card and gently insert it in the slot.
If no success, a trip to the genius bar at an Apple store is the best option.
    Ciao.

  • My DVD drive won't open when I click the button

    Hi there
I'm hoping someone can help me.
My DVD drive won't open when I click the button.
I've tried clicking on eject on the DVD Drive icon in My Computers and it comes up with an error message.
I think I deleted cookies the other day. Could that have anything to do with the problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to send my laptop away to a technician.

    Hi
Try to open the CD/DVD drive manually.
Near the eject button you will find a small hole.
You could use a small object like staple and could push it carefully into this hole.
Usually this should helps to open the drive manually.

  • Satellite L500-126 - CD/DVD drive does not open very smoothly

    Hi,
I just got my second Satelite L500-126.
I exchanged my first one for a new one because the ESC key got stuck sometimes and made a squeaking sound.
Now with my new one, I noticed that my dvd drive does not open very smoothly and 2 little silver metal bars come out with the drive when I open it.
    Is this normal?
Also, when I close the dvd drive i hear a little "ping!" sound.
Like a spring or something. Is this also normal?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
Im not quite sure what you mean by 2 little silver metal bars but my notebooks drive contains two metals (runners, trackage).
This is normal and these parts are important to ensure that the drive could eject properly and could stay in right position.
You will always hear an short click opening and closing the drive.
So I assume this is ok.

  • TX2 DVD Drive Won't Open

I bought the Tx2  2 days ago. I had the keyboard stop working on me and was able to get that fixed. Now the dvd drive won't open. When I first boot up the LED light flashes, letting me know that there is power to it but whenever I push the open button, nothing happens. I have tried ejecting it from the drive icon inside of windows explorer and media player.
I bought this so I could watch movies during my 2 1/2 hour commute so if I can't get this drive open I will be returning it.

Is there a small paperclip-sized hole on the front of, or next to, the drive? If so, you can put a paperclip in there to manually eject the disc drive.
Is the drive showing up in the "Computer" explorer window?
Also, try going to Device Manager and see if the drive is listed or in an error state.

My CD/DVD drive keeps randomly popping open. Usually right after I turn the laptop on and randomly from there on out.

    Hi,
Is your notebook still in warranty?
Your description of the problem sounds like a failing CD\DVD drive.

  • DVD drive won't open

On my HP pavilion loaded with vista, the DVD drive will not operate.  When I try to open the dvd drive in computer dialog box, with a data or software dvd in place, it ejects the disk and requests that I insert a disk.
I would like to determine whether the drive must be replaced or not.

  • CD/DVD drive keeps on opening and closing automatically.

Hi, I just got my computer today and hooked it up.  The first time I hit the 'power' button after having everything hooked up, the CD/DVD drive started making this clunking noise and then procceded to open and close, open and close numerous times.  Since it was the first time I had turned on my PC, I let it go until I had Windows set up and etc.  After I had Windows set up, I restarted my computer and it did the same thing.  It would make the clunking noise and on my screen there would be a blinking _ until I came to the login screen.
Anyone else have this problem with their BRAND NEW, first time turning it on, PC?

Well it just keeps getting better... the other HP, I bought does the same thing!!!! both the same model... but I bought 2, one for home and one for work..
I decided to setup the one for work at home... so I took it out of the box just now... fired it all up and lo and behold... the CD DOOR just popped open... then closed... then opened... then closed.. then finally stayed open.
I look at the post, that said maybe the "plastic front bezel" thingy was pushing against the button.. but it is not.
I removed the side panel.. then in the front, i pulled back on the 3 tabs that hold the front bezel on, and removed the bezel, then started the computer, and tada.... the door STILL OPENS AND CLOSES...
And when the door closes... the "sound" it makes, and by looking at the drive.. is like, it goes in, then makes a sound as the CD DOOR tries to come out a little bit... then goes back in, like 1/8th of an inch... then opens completely..
    WEIRD...
An obivious problem with HP's choice of CD rom drive....
    Anyone else???????

  • DVD drive won't open... no way to open it!!!

My problem is that if I press and hold my eject key on the keyboard the eject symbol shows up and fades away on my screen, but the drive will not open. I pulled down the metal cover and was going to try and stick a paper clip into the hole next to the dvd tray, but discovered that there is no hole. I've restarted the computer holding down the mouse button, and i've restarted the computer holding down the eject button to no avail. I've even tried ejecting in Toast and I get NOTHING! So what do i have to do to get the stupid tray out? Pry it open with a crowbar, or maybe blast it open with some C4?

    Hi,
Just a thought, the ATA cable may be loose or disconnected, if this is the case you'll just need to plug it back in. - Otherwise I'm guessing the drive is dead.
Here's a link to the manual for how to install the drive, check that the cable is in place. (refer to pages 42 - 46)

  • My cd/dvd drive does not open

I just bought a Macbook pro and tried to open the cd/DVD drive by pushing the eject symbol on the keyboard but nothing happens. I looked on the Internet and someone suggested to restart the computer and hold the eject symbol, I did that and heard a noise like if it wanted to open, but it didn't. I was assured when purchasing this macbook that it did contain the cd/DVD drive since originally I had purchased the macbook air. Please help, need to install programs for school.
