Dang People finder messed me up

Took me like 3 minutes to figure out why the video was skipping around on playback when I was hunting for a clip. Started freaking out a little bit.
Morel of the story... once you FIND the clip you are looking for and select it. Turn the people finder back OFF.

  • Ques;How  do you secure imail when used being used in iweb. People can mess

    How do you secure imail when used being used in iweb? People can mess w/my settings in iweb imail window.

    What is iMail?
    And what is an iWeb iMail window?
    iWeb is part of iLife 06 which is an application used to create websites hosted on .Mac.
    Are you referring to Apple's Mail application and webmail access using a browser such as Safari to access your .Mac account?
    Which people can mess with what settings? You shouldn't allow anyone else to access your Mac when logged in to your account and home folder/directory. OS X was designed for multiple users of the same Mac with each regular user having their own computer login account (with or without admin privileges) and associated home folder/directory to store and access their data and settings for their login account only.

  • People Finder Issue

    We have a people finder application that utilizes the IDK to search for user information. We have noticed that when a user property value is deleted from the "My Account" edit profile area that the results returned from the IDK query don't change - meaning it continues to display the previous value, not the blank/empty string that we expect. (example: changing a phone number from 123-1234 to "")
    However, if we check the "My Profile" area the property displays no value as expected.
    If we change the value to anything but a null then our query returns the appropriate change.
    (example: changing a phone number from 123-1234 to 909-9090)
    Therefore it appears that the system isn't properly updating the search index (what we are hitting with our IDK calls) when a user property is set to an empty value (not sure if it is a null or just an empty string).
    We have tried multiple properties to get around the issue and have found no solution.
    I'm wondering if there is a workaround for this, or an alternative way to query the IDK for particular user information (not the values of the logged in user!).
    This is how we query the system for the values:
    userid = Request.QueryString["userid"];
    IRemoteSession prcSession = portletContext.GetRemotePortalSession();
    ISearchFactory searchFactory = prcSession.GetSearchFactory();
    IPortalSearchRequest searchRequest = searchFactory.CreatePortalSearchRequest();
    IUserManager userManager = prcSession.GetUserManager();
    ObjectClass[] objectTypes = { ObjectClass.User };
    searchRequest.SetObjectTypesToSearch(objectTypes);
    IFilterClause generalClause = searchFactory.CreateAndFilterClause();
    generalClause.AddStatement(PortalField.OBJECT_ID, Operator.Equals, userid);
    Field[] fieldsToReturn = {
    (Field) PortalField.ForID(152), // 152 = Phone Number
    (Field) PortalField.ForID(153), // 153 = Title
    searchRequest.SetFieldsToReturn(fieldsToReturn);
    searchRequest.SetQuery("*", generalClause);
    searchRequest.SetResultsCount(0, 500);
    ISearchResponse searchResponse = searchRequest.Execute();
    ISearchResultSet resultSet = searchResponse.GetResultSet();
    System.Collections.IEnumerator results = resultSet.GetResults();
    resultsTable = new DataTable("ResultsTable");
    System.Data.DataColumn key = new DataColumn("name", System.Type.GetType("System.String"));
    resultsTable.Columns.Add(key);
    resultsTable.Columns.Add("title", System.Type.GetType("System.String"));
    resultsTable.Columns.Add("phonenumber", System.Type.GetType("System.String"));
    System.Data.DataColumn[] keycolumn = { key };
    resultsTable.PrimaryKey = keycolumn;
    while (results.MoveNext())
    IPortalSearchResult result = (IPortalSearchResult)results.Current;
    Label2.Text = result.GetFieldAsString((Field)PortalField.ForID(153));
    Label3.Text = result.GetFieldAsString((Field)PortalField.ForID(152));
    }

    I checked with support and they have concluded that this is a bug in the system.
    The workaround is to query the db directly.

    When you have location service on for camera when you post to facebook, instagram etc. can people find out were I took it?

    Hey jerzeyzfynest,
    Unfortuantely, no -- Geek Squad Protection plans require that repairs be sought before a product is considered for replacement. This means your current laptop would only qualify for an exchange if one or more of the following conditions are met:
    A factory-authorized technician has determined that repairs cannot be completed
    A factory-authorized technician has determined that replacement parts cannot be obtained
    The unit has accrued two previous qualifying repairs a factory-authorized technician has identified a third qualifying hardware failure
    A detailed overview of this policy may be found in your plan documentation, as well as in the sample brochure available on the following site:
    http://bbyurl.us/TandC
    If your current laptop hasn't been performing up to par, then I'd encourage you to speak with a technician at your local store when you have the chance to do so. Diagnostic services are included in your service plan coverage, so we'd be glad to help find out what's going on.

  • Looking for a people finder app

    I'm looking for an iPhone app (I have a 3G) that will allow me to easily send my current location to someone else via e-mail or sms (it's OK if they have to have the same app installed) so they can see where I am on a map, helping them find me. I'd use this for meeting up in an unfamiliar area, e.g. I've tracked down a few, but thought I'd see if anyone here has any recommendations. Thanks.

    Basically, press Home and the sleep button simultaneously. The screen blinks, you hear a click, and the screenshot's saved to the camera roll. There's some finesse involved in the button pressing, however. Some people claim you have to press and hold Home first, then tap the sleep button. Just be prepared to experiment. I'm on OS 3.0. Other OS versions may behave differently.

  • 10.4.10+safe boot+rebooting finder mess

    So, I installed 10.4.10 (and really, up to this point, every update has gone smoothly). Things seemed to go okay until I realized I could no longer print to my Dell laser with LPD. Using Parallels (over Port9100) was fine. Even printing from my Powerbook via LPD (10.4.9) was still fine. Did all the usual stuff, resetting print system and what not. Trying to print crashed nearly every app. Then I realized that some apps were crashing printing to my Epson R300. Not good. It seemed something more system wide was going on. Tried to run Disk Utility and it wouldn't launch. Console log said something about a missing .plist file. So, I ran TechTool and it found some directory errors but this didn't fix the problem.
    I then booted into Single User mode and ran Applejack. This fixed a bunch more problems but upon restart, the Finder would endlessly loop with quit and restart. I then booted into Safe Mode. The screen splashed with "Safe Mode" but when it was done, I was left at a console login, just like Single User mode. Is this right? I thought safe mode was back to the OS X gui (like Windows safe mode). This is basically useless as I don't know any Unix commands to search or fix issues.
    So my next hope is to download the 10.4.10 combo to my Powerbook and boot the iMac in Target Disk mode to reinstall. Will this work? Is this simply a clean install, not hard drive wipe? Do I have another option? I'm tearing my hair out over this one.
    Ugggghhh!

    Since we can't examine the machine without further possible damage to the data, the best thing to do first is get all your data backed up. If you buy Prosoft Data Rescue and an external firewire hard drive of equivalent or larger size, you can usually get back almost all your data, if not all of it:

    In the future never upgrade without first performing a backup. My FAQ here outlines how to avoid upgrade issues in the future:

  • Finder messed up my external drive and my hard drive

    Unreal. I have a brand new Western Digital MyBook 750GB external drive. Time machine has been backing up to it every hour since yesterday as it should. A few hours ago, when looking through files, Finder froze and I had to Force Quit/ Relaunch it. When I did that, it actually just locked my entire Mac and I had to hold down the power button to turn it off.
    After powering up again, my external hard drive cannot be read by my Mac and wants me to erase it and start over. Unreal.
    Now I have to start from scratch and erase my entire external drive due to Finder. I never had to relaunch Finder with Tiger. Thanks Leopard.

    Hey again,
    Hopefully you figured out the problem last night, but just in case you haven't, here's what worked for me:
    1) Your probably already know this, but make SURE you don't use Disk Utility to initialize, erase, or reformat the disk - if you do, that will make things extremely hard if not impossible to recover data from.
    2) I used a program called "DiskWarrior". It's available at:
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    Although their website is somewhat unclear if the current release is Leopard-safe, I didn't have much of a choice and did it anyways. It actually loaded up very quick on my Mac Pro and scanned that external 500GB disk very quickly - much faster than I remembered, not sure if that is good or bad...but it worked. I then just hit the "Rebuild" button to rebuild the damaged directory - which I don't know if it is your problem or not, but I'm guessing so judging from your story.
    It found the errors and rebuilt the directory very quickly as well, just a couple minutes max. Then, it mounted perfectly!
    To my relief, it seems to be working fine so far. Apple's Disk Utility can now verify it again, and it doesn't find any errors, so I'm hoping all is well again.
    3) If/when you are successful (cross fingers)...
    After it mounts, go back into the normal Disk Utility app, choose your drive, and use the toolbar button to "Enable Journaling", if it isn't on already. That (I think) should help avoid these problems at least a little bit for the future.
    I'm not sure which program you tried, but there are a few of them out there that do similar things. I (think, but am not sure) that Tech Tool Pro may also be able to rebuild directories (http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=83). There are others as well, let me know if you are still stuck. Good luck with it - please file a bug report with Apple as well so the know what's going on and don't think this is an isolated incident.

  • Organizing iPhoto Library in Finder

    I was wondering if someone could tell me how to better organize my iPhoto library in Finder. Right now, the automatic setting, it is organzing them by year, month, day. I dont know if there is a way to have them organized in Finder by the albums you create in iPhoto itself. The way it is in Finder makes it really difficult to reach them outside of iPhoto ( to send them thru attachments in alternative emails or AIM it is necessary to access the photos thru finder- if this is wrong maybe someone knows, but if its not, than the way the photos are currently set up makes it difficult to pull them out quickly). Thanks for the help,
    Courtney.
    Oh I am using iPhoto 5
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    DO NOT ATTEMPT TO 'ORGANIZE' iPHOTO VIA THE FINDER!! You will corrupt your library and then have a big mess to get your pictures back. Do some more browsing in these discussions and you will find many tales of woe from people who messed with iPhoto via the Finder.
    When you want to send attachments etc it is much simpler to export a copy of the picture to the desktop (which also allows you to make it a more email-friendly file size) and then navigate there to attach it. You can also make a selection in iPhoto and then hit the email button which opens your email program with attachments ready made.

  • Set the Finder's Search Box default to current folder? How?

    How do I set the the Finder's default Search Box parameters to be the current folder that I'm in, instead of searching the whole flamin' computer? (I have to quickly click on the folder name) And also instead of the default being 'Contents', how can I set it to be 'File Name'? It would speed up so many of my searches. I could still click on 'This Mac' to get that, and 'Contents' likewise.
    Tks in advance
    Drew

    I complitely agree and very very frustrated with that problem too just wrote this to feedback system:
    The problem that many people find is that when you have a finder windows open and that you browse a file like "Appplication" then due to the large number of application you use the search bar by taping the application name.
    That's where the problem come from.
    Once you tape the application name it start searching in the all computer ! instated of in the file
    The second problem is that he is searching the content and it will be better to have as default by file name.
    If i wanted to do that kind of search i will use the spolight button next to the clock and people want that search bar in finder to be searching in the folder you are in not all computer.
    Last problem is that we don't have a custom option in spotlight preference or finder preference.
    I would recommend to have that default search in finder change to search in file ONLY and to add Spotlight option in the Finder Preference for people to be able of customizing it.
    When you use that search bar everyday many times a day it becomes very very frustrating.

  • I have a time capsule that has worked flawlessly for several years.  I recently upgraded my iMac OS to 10.8.4 and coincidently (or not) have started having some issues with backups.  When I go into time machine, it struggles to find the time capsule disk

    I have to unplug my time capsule and reboot it.  Is there a diagnostic routine I can run or any error detection I can look for?

    You are absolutely right.. when apple changed significant features in Lion and Mountain Lion .. they introduced a bunch of issues into networking which are bugs to this day..unacknowledged.. and without much that will fix them.. other than your reboot strategy.. which is like.. well that other OS.. where continual reboots are considered normal.
    Old TC may also just suffer from age.. we continually tell people they have a lifespan.. 3years is the reliable span.. after that expect anything.. sudden death.. slow decline.. continual hassles and problems. If the backups are important to you.. then it is telling you in a very clear way.. replace me.. I am no longer happily providing services promised.
    Now to specifics.. we don't know what the problem is.. if we knew we could give some work around.
    The problem is odd in that it doesn't affect everyone.. if it starts .. people find it starts several months in to ownership.. it is never cured.. or even curable.. something like DNS or ARP table is being lost.. but it is not either of those things.
    Is there a diagnostic routine I can run or any error detection I can look for?
    Nothing much shows up anywhere. Including the TC log or local logs. It simply has lost the TC disk but not internet.
    So.
    Some things do help.
    I don't know if you have pondini's resources.. TM is a complex piece of software.. it has multiple issues.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Look at A1 .. load the widget.
    A5 .. verify the backup.
    A4 .. reset TM.
    All of those things can help.. look at some of the typical problems.. C12 and C17 being the most common since Lion.. and exacerbated in Mountain Lion.. not fixed.
    Some suggestions.
    1. Keep names short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. See C9 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    2. Do not use 7.6.3 firmware... go back to 7.6.1 or even better 7.5.2 on an old one.
    Firmware downgrade is easy in new utility. Hold down the option key whilst selecting version.
    3. I recommend a very short dhcp lease time.. 20min for example. In whatever device is the router .. that can help keep things up to date.. and use dhcp reservation again to see if the address info helps to keep things updated.
    4. Do turn on ipv6 local link.. which you need to anyway with 6.3 utility.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
    5. If you are using a desktop.. an external drive is faster.. more reliable and easier than TC for Time Machine backups..
    6. Consider using CCC or another backup software.. if you want to continue to use network drive.
    7. Although using 6.3 airport utility has some advantages.. it is also devoid of a lot of tools that are in v5.6 airport utility.. well worth loading into at least one computer on the network.. if you only have Mountain Lion now here is one method.
    How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
    Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
    Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
    You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
    For screen shots see this post.

  • Lost & Found iPhone with Find My iPhone - Feature Request

    Yes I found the lost phone and I'm very very grateful for the existing feature which works flawlessly once you get a hold of it but from a real life use case, there are things that can be improved that will make it more efficient and effective. This is a summary of feature requests that I figure from the real-life use case of Find My iPhone.
    Earlier this week my friend dropped his iPhone on a cab and realize at the end of the day (he initially thought he left it at home) that it must have fell off his pocket in the cab where he can hardly remember the color of the cab let alone the license plate. Having said that I asked him if he had iCloud turned on (basically Find My iPhone in recent iOS) and so we checked. So here is where all the difficulties begin and please keep in mind that in a situation like this we're always in a hurry if not panicking.....
    1. You typically have more than 1 mobile phones:
    a.) Where its most likely different brand, model, or OS (you don't buy two identical phones) so in this case he has a Samsung Android where iCloud page can not be rendered - it throws an error. So this didn't work
    b.) You need to borrow your friend's "iPhone" to find it and not many people find it obvious that you need to download the Find my iPhone app in addition to just activating iCloud to track a phone. Thats another long step considering in some countries u have a really crappy 3G or sometimes on Edge
    c.) If you are lucky your friend have an iPhone or an iPad, you go to www.icloud.com it doesn't do anything except tell you "how to turn on icloud", download Find my Friends, and Find my iPhone.....you need a laptop browser to be able to use the tracking feature....why????? I understand that it won't work with other brands of mobile phones but these are both Apple's!!!
    2. When you realize that you have lost your phone, you don't always have your laptop or an iPad - but you always have mobile phones let it be your secondary one or your friend's. Moreover, your laptop rarely have cellular connection so even if you have it, aside from the fact that it takes you 15 minutes to boot up your laptop, you also have to find yet ANOTHER phone to tether or find a 3G card to plug in to it so it can use cellular as oppose to just wifi, and then walk around with a laptop looking for the lost phone. And laptop don't have GPS, you don't know where you are relative to your lost phone.
    3. You are trying to look for your iPhone from another iPhone (the most convenient way) but you only see ONE dot that shows your lost iPhone but not "you" who are walking around looking for it so you have to:
    1.) Open the Find My Iphone app and then see where your phone is located
    2.) Open up Google Map (sad but true, Google map is currently the preferable map) to find where you are. Why Google map? In a less developed country, google maps works a lot better in detail.
    3.) Try to find where you are relative to where the lost phone is across 2 maps and 2 different apps. But even if it was Apple map, its still 2 different apps switching back and forth.
    Yes, the idealistic case which would disregard all this is that you have 2 Apple devices logged on to the same iCloud account then you can see 2 dots but not everyone have enough of that to make it useful :-)
    4. You use to have a send message button, lock the phone, make noise, and erase the phone. Now you need to first lock the phone before you can send a message. Understand that you should always lock the phone first but when you're panicking, making the feature obvious would help
    5. Would be nice to know the "percentage" of the battery and being able to shut down all the apps, dim the screen, and etc. to maximize the battery time before the phone goes dead might be helpful.
    It was almost a miracle to get the phone back in a place like this where people tend to immediately shut down your phone and throw away the sim card once they get a hold of it. My friend was very lucky that the phone was in silent and fell into the crack of the backseat and the cab was parked outside the garage so the GPS location was absolutely precise.
    Having mentioned that, iOS7 new security feature that requires your Apple login credentials to erase or turn off Find my iPhone. My question here being it says, find my iphone can continue to display message even after erased - if that is the case will I still be able to track it as well? What if I'm the person who erased it remotely, will I still be able to display message as well as track it?

    This is a user to user community, Apple are unlikely to read your comments, if you have any suggestions that you think might enhance iCloud you can send Apple your feedback here.
    We also can't speculate on what exactly iOS 7's new security features will actually do, all that's available is what has been said so far by Apple, anyone using a developer version is forbidden to discuss it anywhere but in the developers community.
