Dangerous bug in Addressbook and OS X 10.6.1

*DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, unless you backup your AddressBook database folder (/Users/Library/Application Support/AddressBook)...* If you've come across this 'feature' you will definitely know it.
Be very careful if you try to duplicate this. This action will will cause the spinning wheel of death (SWOD) and a long recovery process! What I don't know is why this happens in Addressbook, what I do know- the workaround is simple.
Like the doctor said to the patient complaining about his aches and pains, 'Doc, it hurts when do this...'
'The answer is simple, don't do that!'
Questions about Address Book:
• Why does the function in creating a Smart Group (as per Apple's help) to contain cards that specifies "is not a member of"… cause a complete hang of Addressbook, SWOD (Spinning Wheel of Death) and may crash the database regardless of the number of cards that might be qualify in the search?
• After SWOD from the above search, there is no way to recover the database to get the app running again. The only recovery I found is to delete/restore the data folder (/Volume/Users/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook). Why does Addressbook fail to recover?
This one will cause duplicating Smart Groups if you sync Addresses with MobileMe to one or more computers (iPhone doesn't use Smart Groups):
• Update of Smart Groups' data on one computer, when synced through MobileMe, cause another computer's Smart Groups the group names themselves to be duplicated?
This is a minor annoyance but involved with the above:
• Deleting of a Smart Group (only) sometimes works, especially fails after one of the two problems above to occur.

Apple's Answers today on this case ID:
• Any 'Not' function when creating a smart group in AddressBook, including those suggested by Apple's own helps, will cause the problem and it has to do with the two files in Application Support titled 'AddressBook-v22…' that somehow get corrupted and cause the issue.
• It is a known issue with Leopard versions of AddressBook and predates Snow Leopard versions.
• This problem has no known cure at this time.
• This problem and the current situation is NOT posted on any Knowledgebase information accessible to users(!!)

Using the synch thru .Mac I have had this problem repeat at least twice. I have 5 Macs that I need to keep sync'd, Earlier this year I sync'd one and the others ended up with duplicate and triplicate entries (from 4500 cards to 11,000). Painstakingly I MANUALLY deleted the duplicates and uploaded the new data. A few weeks ago this happenned again but one of the moderators here told me to use Find Duplicates to quickly correct the situation. I thought it was all good then I began to find that it had merged e-mail addresses. In other words. 15% of the Address cards now had 4 or 5 e-mail addresses on them, and it was many of the same addresses that kept recurring. I thought it was just a simple error but but week it happenned again and now about 1/3 of the cards have bad information. Cards that had no e-mail addresses in them now have a address pulled in from another card. I suspect that the Merge data selection has some sort of bug.
To restore my data from either back up or a previous saving of the database
-( I don't trust this program right now and Synch has been giving me errors for over a week so I plan to switch to Filemaker Pro or Entourage). any suggestions for best way to restore data and subsequently export it to???
Which program would you recommend using while Apple gets it together?
Before OSX I used the netscape address book. Do any of these work with Mail or should I used the MS suite?

Don't think it's a bug... It's the way it works.
Are these phone numbers? and are you entering them into the phone number field?
If there appears a gap/empty space between the 1 and 2, then you should expect that it will think there is a gap/empty space between 1 and 2.
Basically, AddressBook - and the other Spotlight interfaces - treat numbers the same as any other text, so that '1 2345' is no more the same as '12345' than 'a star' is the same as 'astar'.
If you've memorized it by blocks, then it should be easier to enter it by the same blocks.
Of course, if you want to see it change, you can always submit feedback

Try updating to iOS 7.0.2.
Does your iPhone still have performance issues? Have you tried the basics?

Can you set an alert for birthdays in Addressbook and iCal?

When I migrated from Palm Calendar to iCal, my calendar had my birthdays in it repeating each year and with a 7 day alert so I could send a card or get a present in time.
I see you can list a birthday in Addressbook and set the iCal pref to show them which is at first glance very cool and green but when I open the birthday event in iCal I don't see any way to set an alert which is a big limitation.
If I can't set alerts, then the Addressbook/iCal birthday syncing is kind of pointless and limited, unless I'm missing how to set alerts.

This is one of the reasons why I wrote Dates to iCal.
As well as automatically syncing birthday dates from Address Book, Dates to iCal can sync anniversary and custom dates. It can set up to five alarms for each date in iCal and can also set different alarms for birthdays and anniversaries.

It's always the second search that is problematic.
I've tried typing over and all it seems to do is confine the search to the the entries that have come up for the previous search.
I've tried to use the x to clear the previous entry and then type the next search, same problem. The only way seems to be to move from "All Contacts" to "Groups". Then the searched name appears and I can return to All Contacts to see full details.
Surely three key press' are not the way it's supposed to work?

Compiler bug with generics and private inner classes

There appears to be a bug in the sun java compiler. This problem was reported against eclipse and the developers their concluded that it must be a problem with javac.
Idea also seems to compile the example below. I couldn't find a bug report in the sun bug database. Can somebody tell me if this is a bug in javac and if there is a bug report for it.

Eclipse compiles and runs the code even though the Baz inner class is private.

As I said in my original post its not just eclipse that thinks the code snippet is compilable. IntelliJ Idea also parses it without complaining. I haven't looked at the java language spec but intuitively I see no reason why the code should not compile. I don't think eclipse submitting bug reports to sun has anything to do with courage. I would guess they just couldn't be bothered.

I just had the same problem, I've updated to 10.6.8 yesterday, and since then the browsing are very slow, no matter what broswer I am using, the upload download speed are still the same. But browsing just take forever, It takes for example google.com 30 seconds to load. I have Extream high speed internet connection, 3 other computers, and the only one is having this problem is the Mac after the update.
Something in this update screwed my browsing capabitilties, I tried downloading Crome browser, same issue.
I hope there is a way beside TimeMachine to revert the latest update. I don't want to reformat as I am sure as soon as I am going to do the update it will cause the same problem.

Hi, Addressbook and Yahoo sync is not working. When i provide information, it does a retrieval for a long time and just does not import anything at all. Is anyone having same problem?

Restore addressbook and calendar

I stupidly tried to import my old system's addressbook and calendar to my G5 running 10.5.7 and lost all the data and the apps don't work anymore! Do I have to do clean reload of Leopard to restore the addressbook and calendar, or is there a way to just load the Apple apps and avoid having to wipe my drive?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
I take it you're not using Time Machine? This would be a snap if you were. (Hint, hint)
I believe you can load AddressBook, but not iCal, from the Leopard Install disc, using the "Install Bundled Software Only" option. That was true in Panther, anyway. Otherwise, an Archive and Install should work, without having to erase your drive.
Full instructions for this are in the *Archive & Install* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine post. I think you'll want to delete the data you imported before you do this.
Alternatively, you may be able to extract them via the Pacifist app, from: http://www.charlessoft.com/. I've not used it, but see it referenced here fairly often.

2 way sync between AddressBook and LDAP

Hi there. I'm looking for something that will help me do a 2-way sync between an Addressbook and an LDAP server. I've been playing with ABxLDAP/Addressbook4LDAP, and that seems to populate addressbook contacts into an LDAP server (a unidirectional sync). However, I want to do a full 2-way sync (changes made in the ldap server are synced to my local addressbook entries and vice versa).
Does anyone know of any apps to do that?

Addressbookserver (www.addressbookserver.com) is also not LDAP.

Details: When a logout was followed by an immediate login, sometimes the server would throw duplicate session detected errors. This was because when logout happened, a fire-and-forget disconnect message was sent to the server that established a new session, and if the subsequent login happened before disconnect ACK returned from the server, that would establish another session and hence the error. The fix is to insert a slight delay between disconnect and ResultEvent dispatching. This way, disconnect has a chance to return before a login is performed.

You've got an incompatible Logitech driver and java was incompletely uninstalled.
You may have a problem with the Wacom driver.
I don't know if fixing those things will help.
There also a few window server errors, but I don't know if they are causal.
If you can note the time of the hangs, that might help narrow it down in the logs.

Bug in "Get and Set Time.vi" example for RT systems

There is a bug in "Get and Set Time.vi" that ships as an example in the "NI System Monitor" package. The routine does *NOT* return the hour correctly.
Note the string "%#H:12:39.371" as the time of day. That should be 09:12:39.371 as it was 9 AM at the time.

It may be only in the Mac OS X code base. But since it is one of those annoying locked VIs I can't tell. Now of course this is locked because communication with the RT system is so sensitive or just plain messy. My guess is that if I thow wireshark at it I can tell you what is inside and it shouldn't be that secret.
But let me know what you find running under Mac OS X.
