Dangerously low on disc space?

I've been importing DV footage into iMovie, and several times when I stop importing, I've gotten a warning message: "You are running dangerously low on disc space" and it says I should delete some files, or I might not be able to save my movie.
I don't understand it, because I have 56 GB of space available on my hard drive (it even says that in the bottom of the iMovie window). What's up with that?
I've ignored the warning and saved my projects just fine, but it keeps coming up. There was a time that I had my hard drive almost filled up, but I deleted a bunch of movie files to free up 60 GB.

Hi Iroth:
It's just me, but I always share all of my finished movies back to the DV tape that I originally imported them from. That way I have the original raw video plus the finished one on tape. Then I start a new tape the next time I make a movie.
Lots of tapes-priceless memories.
Maybe you should consider sending your iMovies back to tape, once you are done, and that way you will open up the extra space because you can delete the older ones.

  • Error backing up a catalog: "low on disc space"

I have problem backing up my catalog in Photoshop Elements 11. I have a new computer and want to move my Potoshop catalog to this one. But when trying to back up on the existing PC, it first says «Please wait while Elements Organizer prepares for backup...». Then after a while I get the following error message: «Your system is low on disc space, and Elements Organizer cannot perform this operation. Try removing some files to free up disk space.»
In trying to back up to a directory on a USB-drive with 847 GB free space. Photoshop says that it will back up «Size: 143 041,10 MB» so there should be plenty of free space. I have no problem copying files to this drive so it is accessible.
Photoshop is installed on the C-drive (18,4 GB free), while my picture files are stored either on C:, on E: (46,6 GB free) or on I: (1,76 GB free).
Any suggestion for how to solve this?

    Hi
I'm getting this same issue/  Also Elements 11.  Backup was fine a month ago.  Just wondering if you found a way to solve this.
I can do an incremental backup just fine but I want to do a full backup, Trying to get this to work to migrate to new laptop in a week or two's time.
I've tried all tips ago, incl re-indexing (which has helped organizer performance significantly)

  • Dangerously low on disk space

My iMovie projects are saved to an external 160 GB Firewire hard drive. Even with 60 GB freespace on the drive, I frequently get the "Dangerously low on disk space" warning
The external hard drive is formatted as as MAC OS Extended (Journaled) and is not partitioned.
My current project is at 18.7 GB.
    Any suggestions?

I'm seeing the same thing. Durning a long capture in iMovie HD 6.03 the import from camera I get the 'dangerously low on disk space' warning and at some point -- then or later, don't know which -- the capture stops.
The duration before stopping was close to 10 hours, and the data took 113855236 K on disk, which left only 954.8 Gbytes on my 2 Tbyte -- yes, Tbyte -- external drive. The system drive had 89.95 Gbytes left at that point.
Seems to be a bug in the code checking for disk space, it appears to me.

  • Suggestions for clearing up disc space?

I'm runnning low on disc space on my MacBook Pro and it's starting to run pretty slow. Aside from the obvious deleting files, what can I do to get my MacBook running like new again?

John Hammer makes an excellent point. You can get rid of unneeded applications, for example, but the size of applications is relatively small compared to media files.
I save my "excess" files on two Seagate portable drives. One 500GB drive is about $50, on a good price. They can last a long time.
Post here if you have any questions or comments.

Now my concern is that my user/SAP drive has very low free space.
Can anyone suggest which files can I delete to increase the disc space.

    Dear Santosh,
I had already copied the files EPS/In to a different location and deleted  its contents.Ya folder EPS/In is still there but through that I got around 100-150 KB of free space.
Now can I do the same for sapname folder(free space 150 KB)and log folders that will give me around 1.3 GB of free space.
Please suggest  can I do it similiarly for any other files.
    Please suggest..
NOTE: EPS/IN files are created when we apply support packages(.PAT and ATT files),but what type of files \.\sapmnt\SID\DVEBMGSXX\workcontains..Also it will give EPS/IN gives me only 130KB of free space.

  • HT1766 iphone recovery wasn't successful due to low disc space. should i erase now?

upgraded iphone 4 to iOS7.   Phone is now disabled as it was asking for a code and neither my granddaughter nor I knew what it was (I believe it should have been 1234).   Have tried recovery but it wasn't successful due to low disc space.   Im no techno-gran and am trying to work my way through this slowly.   I don't really understand what will happen if I erase it.   Will I be able to put everything back on?

    Hello Em126
If you go to Settings > General > Usage, it will provide you with a list of what apps are using the most data on your iPhone. Then you will have a sense of where you can remove data if you need to.

  • Partially extracted .zip file taking up valuable disc space

    Hello people.
I recently tried extracting a ~500mb .zip file using the standard Bomarchiver, and unfortunately for me the extracted file was turning out to be much bigger than I anticipated. As a result I started running out of disc space as the file was being extracted, and cancelling the action did not appear to work so I killed the process.
Alas I have not regained the disc space I lost initially, and it seems to still be occupied by a partially extracted file somewhere on the drive. The original .zip was on the desktop, yet there is no sign of a .part file anywhere.
Is there a specific location that partial extracts are stored? How can I regain the lost disc space?
I am running 10.4.11 on an old Wallstreet G3 Powerbook, and its limitation of an 8gb boot partition is causing me headaches!

Hello, see if you can't Trash a couple of Big 4 MB sized files, your in dangerous Territory, with the OS near or at self destruction, & Empty the Trash.
If not at least try a Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), that should at least clear up some caches.
If you can get a little breathing room...
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

You could get & boot from a Firewire Drive, if it has FW, & not have the 8 GB limit.

  • Insufficient Disc Space for Burning

My setup: Premiere Elements 12 running on an Apple iMac running OSx Yosemite. Samsung external blu-ray writer.
I have a recording of a play from my local amateur dramatic society. I have successfully burnt to a DVD-RW complete with menus and photograph gallery. When I insert a DVD-R it tells me there is insufficient disc space. The project is 4.38 Gb and Disc Utility tells me that the DVD has 4.7 Gb free. My hard disc has 826.96 Gb free. I have successfully written to other discs from this spindle in the past. I've tried two discs with the same result.
I tried burning to a folder then burning a disc using Toast, but the disc auto-played instead of displaying the menu (despite auto-play being unticked).
    Advice would be welcome.

    Mark
Thanks for the reply and additional information.
Please consider disc capacity, file size, and bitrate....
If your Premiere Elements burn dialog Quality area was showing 4.38 GB with "Fit Content to Available Space" enabled, what was it showing for Bitrate.
Unless the program had to lower the bitrate to 1.69 Mbps or where it could not lower the bitrate any further to make the fit, you should have been able to get a burn to disc in Premiere Elements. The quality would have been worse case at the extremely lowered bitrate, but a burn to nonetheless.
If you want to pursue this, we could compare the Space Required and Bitrate with and without "Fit Content to Available Space" to get at
what triggered the Insufficient Disc Space message. We could also look at the Scratch Disk "Disc Encoding" to find to where it is
directed and how much free space is at that location.
If you have the time and want to follow up on this, please let us know.
    Thank you.

  • Insufficient Disc Space

I have a text alert appearing when I try and add photos to the library.
The disk containing your iphoto library is running low on space are you sure you want to continue?
I have 800 gb free space on my hard disc and circa 10K photo in Iphoto.
    I press yes.
I get a message error writing to disc "iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem writing to the volume containing your iPhoto library."
If I have disc space and iphoto can handle 250K photos what is the problem?
Does Iphoto have an allocation of disc space?
If so how do I expand it?
    Regards
    John

This seems to be a bogus message and likely indicates an issue with the iPhoto Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards

  • Available Hard Disc Space

I have an iMac4 which I bought a year ago with 500 Gb of hard disc space. I had an iBook with 40 Gb of space and when I got my new machine I transferred all the info across straight away. The strange thing was that I then appeared to have used about 250 Gb of the space on my new HD. This has puzzled me for tha past year! How does 40 Gb expand on transfer to take up nearly 250 Gb of space??
I have just looked through some past posts and downloaded 'WhatSize' to see if that can shed any light on the problem. Unfortunately it hasn't! It is telling me that I have a capacity of 465 Gb, I've used 281 Gb and have 183 Gb available. There is nothing strange or startling on my Mac. I have MS Office 2001, some itunes and some photos. Nothing outrageous as we just use the Mac for normal, low level family stuff.
'What Size' show that that the HD is using the following space:
    24.9 Gb Users
    9.83 Gb Library
    6.93 Gb Applications
    2.82 Gb The Sims 2.localised
    1.64 Gb System
    1.96 Gb private
    513 Mb usr
388 Mb Applications (Mac OS 9)
Those are the main ones followed by a list of others (about 15) none of which takes up more than 240 Mb. When I add up all of the above it makes about 50 Gb. Where's the other 230 Gb gone?!!!
I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this for me.

    Hi Alun,
Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006 so it seems odd that it's only a year old. I suspect that you have an Intel iMac. Could you check the processor in  > About this Mac.... Thanks.
465Gb is the correct figure for your hard disk. Data is stored in a binary fashion but hard disks are sold in decimal notation. The conversion calculation for Gigabytes is
    (500 x 10003) / 10243 = 465.66Gb.

  • "Running Low on free space in Startup disk"?

I am trying to burn a DVD and after so long the message comes up saying i am running low on free space. I have checked my internal drive and amazed at what is being used.
    Capacity: 55.77GB
    Available: 1.44GB
    54.36 Used on Disk.
Can anyone tell me how i can make free space and delete whatever is using all my memory? Its not being used in any of my programmes that i use, i.e. itunes, imovie etc.
Any help would be great. Thank you.
IBook G4, Powerbook 6.3     Mac OS Extended

First of all, it is dangerous to have that little free space. OS X needs some breathing room (about 5-10% of the HDD free).
The files could be anything, really. Music and Videos, including Garageband loops take up a ton of space. I would snag an external firewire drive and put some stuff on there.
Your problem is hard drive space, not memory, FYI. If you are running Tiger (10.4.x). Google and download "Tiger Cache Cleaner" (there is also a Panther version). Running it may free up some space, as will running Monolingual, which strips other languages from your machine.
Another thing you can check is your printer database. If you go to Macintosh HD--> Library--> Printers, you can delete any printer driveers you don't need. (Be careful with this, as it requires your admin. password...)
    iSMH
Ps- the OS also takes up some space, as do 3-rd party applications.
Let me know how it goes.

  • NSTC vs PAL disc space differences

    Hello,
I have a DVD that was shot using HD. I edited in FCP, then compressed in Compressor using NTSC. When I made my DVD, it used 4.7 gigs and barely fit, but it did. I then stripped all video assets in DVDSP and selected PAL. I then recompressed the HD footage to PAL format in Compressor using the same settings, and the m2v file sizes were almost identical. I then reimported all video assets to DVDSP and dragged them to the tracks I already had setup. However, now my DVD is 4.9 gigs and won't fit. My question is, is there a problem with my work flow there that it might be hanging on to some extra assets, or does PAL natively take more disc space when compiled into a DVD? The m2v file sizes were only a meg or two different, yet my final project is 200 megs different.
    Thanks,
    Brandon

PAL is slightly higher in resolution than NTSC, so the file size should be slightly larger. You might need to lower the bitrate slightly in Compressor to get it to fit.
