Dark capture in FCE4; fine in iMovie

Hi,
I captured a clip using iMovie ('11) the other night.
I bought FCE4 last night and tried importing the same clip; it looked dark, so I compared the two, and sure enough, the FCE4 capture is darker and loses some detail in areas that detail is plainly obvious in the iMovie capture.
Tried searching around for a bit but haven't found anything, so I'm hoping this is a simple explanation...
thanks!
Andrew

+"If your media is DV you need to look at it on a video monitor."+
I don't understand (assuming capture format is identical) why the relative visible difference on the same monitor wouldn't be relevant. Maybe in the way each program displays video?
See below...
+"You cannot assess it on a computer screen. Side-by-side how? Where? In the QT player? "+
Sure I can. Doesn't mean it's accurate Yes, side-by-side, one capture visible in FCE4, the other in iMovie '11.
I did not try opening each clip in Quicktime side-by-side.
thanks,
A.

I would like to add the following in hopes that someone will come up with a solution. The problem lies somewhere in Quicktime and the FireWire capture. I have the exact same camera and problem, and can assure you it has nothing to do with cam settings or DV LP. Once your system is stuck in this HDV mode, it would seem that regular DV can not be used again. I also have 2 other DV cams that are not HD. One is PAL, one is NTSC. I would further add that my external FireWire iSight no longer works in any application. I do not receive error messages, I simply get the spinning beach-ball of death.
    I have a Dual G5 2.7 with 4 gigs RAM running FCP 5.0.4 on OS 10.4.8
I have run Cocktail, rebuilt permissions and re-installed Quicktime 7.1.3 four times as per Apples tech article 301852
I have used FCP Rescue 5 to clear preferences
I have captured footage from both regular DV cams to iMovie and then added the footage to FCP. The footage plays on the screen of both DV cams flawlessly via FCP. (I can also capture HDV in iMovie as well)
I have tried logging footage directly through the QuickTime application with both DV cams and my iSight and get the same beach-ball of death as FCP.
Why can iMovie work with these devices flawlessly yet QuickTime can not.
Why does it seem like the system is stuck in some kind of HD mode.
Just to point out the obvious:
I have no other FireWire devices other than the cameras and I only connect one at a time.
I have shut down, disconnected and re-connected before attempting to use the devices.
I have booted my G5 from a second system disk and everything (HDV cam PAL DV cam NTSC cam and iSight) function flawlessly on all the FireWire ports of my machine.
I have worked with FCP for about 6 years and Macs for 20. I understand the easy set ups etc.
Spent way too much time customizing my system to think about the clean install route, so I hope someone can shed some light on this.
    Thanks

  • MUST be pro here that can help! Opens fine in iMOVIE in FCP, audio need ren

    http://www.filmtv.biz/Shot04.dv.zip
    It's a small clip 9mb.
Tried changing sequence properties to no avail.
This opens fine in iMOVIE, plays audio and video fine. Am new to this (from Sony Vegas) and can not figure out how to get this to play in FCP without rendering.
There must be a property setting that I am missing.
    Thanks again!
    Cheers!

Your audio is 32-bit and you are using a 16-bit
    sequence setting.
Might try exporting at 48/16 stereo.
    Whoa!
Everyones moving just a tad bit fast for me! (grin)...
Ok, now I know if I capture, transfer from DV Cam, etc, there will not be problems, but this was a trial editing per se and the files where submitted as is.
My questions really isn't about iMOVIE vs FCP, how silly (grin), but more to why does iMOVIE play everything so seemless whereas FCP needs rendering?
Now, let us say a client gives me 10 clips such as this for a commercial, when you say exporting 48/16 (which I think I changed in the settings (SEQUENCE) it had no effect, what do you mean by exporting?
If you where to get these clips as is, how would you import them into FCP and make them work without rendering? If this can't be done then what would the next (BATCH PROCESSING) steps be?
I still do not understand export at 48/16 reply! As mentioned I did make some changes in the sequence settings but it did not help, plays fine in viewer but not canvas. I know iMOVIE is a consumer product but it does read/playback much easier than FCP. You would think FCP would inherit at least this part of the "smart" technology or at the very least when importing make the changes on the fly?
    Thanks again!
PS. Where did you get the properties info? I opened in QT and did not see anything that mentioned audio settings in "movie info" or "property setting" nor did I see them when I right clicked the clip, it did not show audio info.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • I made an iMovie, 6.0.3 using music from iTunes and photos from the Internet. It looked fine on iMovie, but when I uploaded it to youtube, some of the photo near the beginning was corrupted. What steps should I take to export iMovie for youtube?

I made an iMovie, 6.0.3 using music from iTunes and photos from the Internet. It looked fine on iMovie, but when I uploaded it to youtube, some of the photo near the beginning were corrupted on youtube. I tried a different photo, and the corruption took place at the same moment of the video. How do I prepare the video for export to get it ready for youtube? I wasn't sure whether to clik web or web streaming. Am I supposed to clik Quick Time after I clik Share?

I unfortunately cannot remember where I got the 'trrndlines' plugin... I assume that it must have been from CFX (as it is located under /Users/Dom/Library/iMovie/Plug-ins/cfx/XXXtrrndlines.bundle).
As for what it does, I also do not know, as I do not think I ever used it in my previous video projects.
At this stage, I think I just need to uninstall it so that iMovie doesnt try to use it.
Do you know how to uninstall a CFX plugin in iMovie?
NOTE: I have re-installed iMovie 6.0.4 (instead of iMovie 6.0.3), but still encounter the same issue.

  • Video plays fine in iMovie but not in Web Gallery ?

    Hi
I managed to import some small video clips to iMovie 08 using Streamclip (converting to .dv files).
The movies play fine in iMovie - no problems. However when I publish to Mac Web Gallery (I only published "mobile" size), one of the videos always hangs at the same point. The clip starts playing but you can see the clip stop loading and then it stops playing at the exact same point about 3 minutes in.
The Web Gallery says the clip is 4mins 36secs long but it never plays it in full. I've removed from Gallery and republished. I've also deleted the project and started from scratch. Both have failed to cure it.
Also tried it in Firefox 3 and Safari - same result.
Why is Mac Web Gallery struggling to play all the clip?
    Thanks for any input!
    Martin

    Which version of iMovie?
If you are on version 8.0.6, this is probably due to the use of speed changes like fast motion or slow motion.
If you have speed changes in your project, you need to stick to the pre-set tick marks of 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400%, 800%, etc. If you use a custom percent like 58% or 139%, you will get weird audio behavior in your final product.

The Deskjet series printers connect to wireless networks with what is called USB to Wireless.
You will need a supported operating system to connect a Deskjet to a wireless network.  Supported operating systems to connect the printer to a wireless network are Windows 7 (32bit and 64bit), Windows Vista (32bit and 64bit), and Mac OS X (10.5, 10.6, and 10.7).
While there is a software download option for Linux distributions, this is not the full featured software that is capable of adding the printer to a wireless network.  Most printers have a wireless setup wizard to accomplish this task, but the Deskjet series printers connect in a different way.
Once the printer is connected to a wireless network,  HPLIP 3.12.4 drivers should be able to locate the printer.
Click on Installing the Product Software for a Wireless Network Connection to receive instructions to connect to a wireless network using Windows and Mac operating systems.
Click on Software & Driver Downloads - HP Deskjet 3070A e-All-in-One Printer - B611a to download the appropriate software for a supported operating system to connect to a wireless network.

  • HELP! Can't capture with FCE4

I went today to a Mac Store to try FCE4 armed with my Canon XHA1... and couldn't capture at all. It says on the product description that it supports HDV format (the one I used with my camera) but still didn't find a way around. Is there something I'm missing? Can I capture with FCE4? Is there something I need to do in terms of setup either with the software or the camera?
Thanks in advance for your help!

If there was a dialog message from the application it would be good to know exactly what that said and when that message appeared. The Apple Intermediate Codec is installed with QuickTime. If you do not have that the system was not properly installed. Perhaps you used a setting on the camera which is not compatible with FCE. What exact settings did you using on the camera? What exact settings are you using in FCE? Is the camera set to output what you shot. Many HDV cameras will downconvert so they output a DV version of your media. With minimum information there is no way anyone can help you. Please give complete information about your system and settings and drives and how everything's connected.

When I compress my movie to quicktime, the audio doesn't sync properly, even though it looks fine in iMovie. How do I fix this?

Audio on the timeline, especially stream, tends to play very reliably. Is this project under any NDA or can you provide a FLA to examine? Let me know if you want to private message it and I'll shoot you a message.
What version of Flash Player are you targeting and is this AS2 or AS3?

  • Capturing Video w/Audio in iMovie?

    Hi,
I was just wondering if it's possible, using the iSight and the built-in mic on a MBP, to capture video w/audio with iMovie? Or just video w/out audio? I tried to capture video, but the audio didn't seem to come through at all. If it's not possible, any program reccomendations?
    Cheers,
    Tom.

    Hi Tom:
Just to be sure, do you have thee timeline audio boxes checked?

  • Captured to external drive, now iMovie won't work

I have a Mac formatted external drive and a friend (who is soon to become an ex-friend) talked me into capturing my movies on an external drive then editing from there (had been doing great up until then capturing to my internal drive). So I captured a 45 minute movie onto the external drive through the computer via iMovie. Used a Firewire 800 cable from the computer to the external HD and a 400 Firewire cable from the camera to the computer. It all went fine. Opened iMovie but instead of my normal event list, there were two folders marked "Event 1" and "Event 2". When I tried to clicked on the the first one, iMovie tried to "initialize" it but kept shutting down. I looked in the folder and the files were broken up into tiny 1 or 2 second movies which said "Q-DV". So I trashed those two folders then captured directly to the internal HD, but it did the same thing again! Made two folders which iMovie can't open. I looked in iMovie Preferences but don't see how to correct the problem. Have I ruined something?! I'm stuck. Can't do anything. Heeeeelllllp! (please)

Shame on me. I have to stop running to the forums every time some little thing goes wrong. Here's what happened: I tried to capture a project I had already rough cut on the PowerBook a few years back. The original was Super-8 footage which I'd had transferred professionally to a mini DV cassette. I had captured that on my PowerBook, done a rough cut, then transferred that to another brand new DV cassette. That's the one I tried transferring to the MacBook Pro. I'd done that before but with video originating from my DCR-PC100, so the source was DV. This morning I rooted around through my cassettes and found the original transfer cassette and tried capturing it directly to the internal drive of the MacBook Pro. It worked perfectly. So I guess the problem was the second generation capture of the Super-8 footage via the PowerBook (using iMovie2). However, I'm still dubious about capturing video through the MacBook (using the configuration I mentioned) to an external drive. Everything I've read so far about storing video on the external drive talks about moving it from the internal drive. I've yet to see anything about capturing to the external drive so I'm reluctant to ever try that again. Anyway, problem solved.

  • CAPTURING FROM DVC PRO INTO iMOVIE

I am feeding a DVC pro deck with SDI out into the firewire port on my new mac. I can see the video in imovie capture window, but cannot actually capture footage (either by selecting import or hitting the space bar). No clips are captured.
I have rebooted the mac but still can't capture video. Since I can see video in the imove capture window, I can assume that the source (dvc pro) is not the problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

iMovie 11 is well worth the cost. Get it for $14.99 in the new App Store.
In iMovie 11, you need to get a free app called MPEG Streamclip. You need to have it anyway. It is like a Swiss Army Knife for people who make videos. Right-click on the clip in iMovie. Select Reveal in Finder. Drag this clip to MPEG Streamclip. Move the playhead to the frame you want, and click FILE/EXPORT FRAME. Pick Jpeg, TIFF, or PNG and you are done.
In iMovie 08, the above procedure works fine as well. However, there is another way, which I have documented [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2255510]

  • Canopus and FCP and dark captures

I searched the forum and quite a few people are using or familiar with the Canopus DV converter. I have the 110 model and capture TV programs for further editing. I find the clips in FCP are very dark. I haven't gotten a filter to get it back to what was shown on the tv. The brightness slider doesn't work during capture because it's already digital.
Has anyone any ideas for getting better balanced brightness in this situation? What kind of input into FCP allows you to use the Clip controls for brightness?

I like keeping clips from tv programs for myself. I like to make a 'highlights' collection. Why is that illegal? We're not allowed to record from the tv?
As for the manual, I read it daily. I'm new, yes. But I try to learn. I'm in the middle of Vol. III and when I'm done I intend to start over and read again. I know how to make a clip lighter, I'm just saying the way they're being captured they are always darker than the tv picture and certain of them I have not found a way to brighten without washing out the whole thing. I was perhaps hoping to be pointed in the direction of someone's favorite filter.

  • Capturing in FCE HD vs iMovie

I am very new to this so please excuse me if this has been answered before or is too basic...
I am familiar with iMovie and like very much the way it captures from a camera by creating an icon for each individual scene, which I can then drag to the timeline.
After reading a bit about FCE HD I am under the impression that it does not capture this way at all, but involves a much more tedious method of having to designate starting and ending points for each capture (each scene?).
IS there a way to get FCE to capture by just playing the entire tape and having it recognize individual scenes which can be added to the timeline, or does it just not work this way? If not, can iMovie be used to do the capturing and then export the footage to FCE for editing?

Let me add to Tom's instructions (that I regularly use myself) that the result is what you'd expect as a former iMovie user, but one point: at the end of this process in FCE you still have a single big media file, while in iMovie you have many smaller files, one for each clip. As a result in FCE there is not way to recover unused disk space, as there is in iMovie.

  • HD Itunes movies are too dark on tv but fine on ipad

So this is my first post and i have run into a dilema with the itunes video quality. i have seen a couple posts on similar problems like this, but no answer. so here it go's. Ive notice that when i watch my movies that i downloaded from itunes (hd not sd) that when you get to a dark area in the movie is not just dark but pretty dark (for instance the desolation of smaug, when they are in the tunnels towards the end of the movie, its so dark on tv you lose out on detail). its not the tv settings or the computer settings because i have tryed calibrating to correct the issue. i have noticed from reading another post that the darkening so to speak only happens once the control bar on the bottom of the screen fades away when your in full screen. if you are not in full screen it retains the brightness and the detail levels. to add to this i have noticed that the movies i downloaded a long time ago are not affected by this plague of darkness, they seem to work fine, however i believe they are sd videos. (i also have loaded my personal blu rays onto itunes and it does not have the same issue that the itunes movies have). if this helps to i have a late 2012 mac mini 2.3ghz quad and my monitor is samsung tv ln46a650a. this also may help, i didnt notice thses issues until after the latest security update 2014-002 ver. 1.0, although that may be just a giant coincidence. any help you be appreciated, THANKS!

I agree that this does work.  Thanks.
However, I now have the issue that I scroll the whole screen down to show the shows at the bottom.  When I highlight the last show, the 10 shows are not visibile as they are at the top of the screen.  I have to scroll the whole screen back up to the top to see episodes.
This is not the most elegant solution but at least with lots of double scrolling, it is possible.
