Dark display

10 year old flat panel iMac with dark display. Boot chime OK sleep OK

Is it too dark to see anything or does it show the icons and windows but looks as if you are wearing dark sunglasses?
If it is totally dark, shine a bright light like an LED flashlight onto the screen near the top of the display and see it you can detect the menubar. If so, the display part is working but the backlighting has failed.

  • Emac 1.42 ghz external display mirroring will it solve dark display problems ?

I have an emac 1.42 ghz and the display is getting dark I have the contrast turned all the way up and the contrast turned up one notch in the universal access. When the computer is shutdown sometimes when it starts back up it is very dark almost unusable until it warms up or is running for about 20 minutes. Then it is normal. If I use an external monitor on the mini vga port with an apple adapter will it have the same darkness/display problems. I really like this computer but if the external display wont fix the problem I will need to wipe the drive while I still have a useable display

I'd say it's likely to help using a different monitor.
I think you could possibly check by doing a Screen Capture, which I believe gets it frm the graphic card, then view that capture on aniher computer, or post it here for us to view.

  • New iPhone 4 ugly yellow- dark display

    Hello,
I recieved my new iPhone 4 yesterday from the applestore and I'm very disappointed because the display is much darker and has a touch yellow. My 3GS display can perform the colours much more better. White is now always grey- yellow and it is oversigning the other colours, too.
Does somebody has also this problem? Are all displays now like this? It I hope not

what the heck do you mean by "The Verizon iPhone 4's have a crappy yellow hue and therefore the display seems dimmer than the AT&T one"
have you even used one? in case you forgot or aren't aware, when the AT&T iPhone 4 came out in july, people were getting messed up displays like this left and right, and people still do. i know because when i got my AT&T iphone 4, i had this same problem. it has nothing to do with the fact that is a verizon iphone. its a defect. my verizon iphone 4 is fine, the display colors are perfect.
dear OP, take it to an apple or verizon store and you will get a replacement.

  • Help with color setup, pictures printing dark, display looks great

Ok, first let me say I am completely new to Mac, so some of this may sound incredibly stupid but I really need some direction as to how to solve a color issue. Please bare with me as I describe what is probably a most simple fix to those of you with knowledge.
My issue is that I have great display, the pictures, (some taken with a Nikon D100 and D200 in raw format) look wonderful on screen and then, I print.... and for lack of a better description, they appear darker and less "colorful".
The printer is an Epson Photo R1800 which did a wonderful job while on my windows box (using photo shop elements). I had the problem before and after leopard so not an os issue.
I have looked around a bit and found information regarding calibration, icc profiles, etc... and have downloaded the icc profiles from the Epson website. I guess my frustration is that I expected this to be more straight forward as I did nothing but install drivers on the windows box and the pictures printed as they looked on screen, which is my ultimate goal since I am not a pro.
I guess I cannot understand the need to buy another piece of equipment to calibrate a display just to print family photos and it just doesn't make sense to me that the display, which is truly a great picture, needs to be dulled down to match what the printer is putting out. This appears to me to be more of a printer output or driver issue than the display being incorrect.
Sorry for the rant, it is one of frustration and admitted ignorance.
    Would much appreciate any help.

What is (probably) happening is that the output to the display is boosting the picture to "look great" whereas what you actually need to do is have a neutral display and then adjust the picture to make it look good on that neutral display.
That's why you need to calibrate the display if you want accuracy when you print.
You may also require the output profiles for your printer, so that when the picture is printed the printer driver makes the correct mapping to the inks and paper.
There's been some other colour management threads recently - search for those and follow the links to some good articles that will explain all you need to know about colo(u)r management. It's very, very, important to get this right when you are printing for yourself, or even when you are sending the image off to a good lab to print.

  • Darker display of Nikon D50 NEF vs. JPGs

Until now I used to archive my images with iPhoto and was fairly satisfied with the application. Especially the slide show features and integration with the other iLife components are great.
But now that I got a Nikon D50 and have decided to shoot RAW, I noticed that the RAW images are quite dark (as reduced in exposure) when compared to the JPGs imported the same time. (RAW/JPG Basic import).
With the camera also came Nikon Picture Project which does not show this behavior, has some good features, but is lacking others. So at the moment I'm using both programs to make up for the faults in both.
Another flaw with iPhoto is that it only shows very limited EXIF info.
Has anybody been able to display Nikon D50 RAW images correctly in iPhoto? Any EXIF Plugins for iPhoto?

Appreciate your feedback, and I understand the difference between RAW and JPG images, but I need to repeat that I do not see the same in either Nikon Picture Project or iView Media Pro or Graphic Converter. It's clearly an iPhoto issue for me.
Further testing today caused a strange thing to happen. I made a duplicate of a RAW file in iPhoto, then tried to open it externally with Nikon Capture, which caused iPhoto to change both RAW files to JPG, although I made no changes in Nikon Capture. Checking the Originals folder it showed that iPhoto had added two files to the original RAW file, one with a -1.jpg, and one with a _1.NEF.
Only the JPG can be opened. Both the original RAW and the Duplicate are corrupted now and don't open with any application.
There is clearly something wrong with the way iPhoto handles RAW files. It should not touch the Original RAW.
Maybe it's only NEFs from my D50?
Guess I need to wait for an affordable version of Aperture.

  • Videos look dark displayed using projector, but OK in my laptop?

this one seems to be a common problem. I have been lecturing in several medical meetings and when colleagues show embedded videos in their presentations, they look very dark. Sometimes they are so dark that miss completely the point. I have had the same problem, to the point where I have had to skip a slide with video because it is so dark that it cannot be seen on the main projector screen. The curious thing is that in my laptop screen they look fine when I am presenting... but very dark when they are projected. Any ideas to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

I don't have the same problem (i.e. videos too dark) but I'll bet it's the same solution. My problem was that the Keynote presentation on the LCD were way too dark. Funny thing was that if I opened up the systems preferences dialog box, they looked fine. Hummm.
Turns out that it was an issue with a change in the latest OS and how apple now handles the gamma setting in external displays. I don't recall all the details but Snow Leopard seems to use the new standard gamma of 2.2, making output too dark. The output gamma should be closer to 1.8.
To fix this, you need to adjust the color profile for the LCD projector that you are using.
To fix a projector, the projector must be plugged in and turned on to do this.
If you go to System Preferences, Displays and the Color option. You'll see a list of Display Profiles. There will be a dialog box on both the computer screen and the projector screen. To get them both on the computer screen to make editing a little easier you can click Gather Windows at the bottom of the dialog box on the computer.
I found it easier to just Calibrate the monitor and same a new profile - you can also uncheck the Show profiles for this display only and pick another profile like one of the sRGB profiles. To calibrate, click the Calibrate button (be sure you do it on the dialog for the LCD projector) I'd click Expert Mode - this will give you more options when adjusting the Gamma. Run through the Calibration routine making sure that you select a Gamma that is closer to 1.8 instead of the 2.2.
At the end, same the profile and then everything on the external display should look much better.
When researching my issue, there seemed to be consensus that using a digital interface the projector was better than the normal VGA cable. Didn't have a cable to try that.
Once you do this, the machine should always recognize the projector and behave properly. Seems a pain to have to do this but I didn't find any other alternative. The good thing is that I have not had to do this on every projector that I use. I have my own projector that has always worked properly.
I teach at a university where the rooms have mounted projectors - some work with no change, others I have to calibrate...
Try it out, hope it helps...

  • Suddenly darker display

Suddenly this AM my display is darker and I cannot getit brightened up.  Does it man the disp;ay is going south?  If so can it be changed or do I have to purchase a nedw computer?

  • T-20 dark display

Have a T20 notebook, and suddenly the desktop display is very dark.  Fn+Home to adjust brightness has no effect, and works fine with external monitor.
when scrolling through display output options (Fn+F7), appears ok for couple of seconds, then back to very very dark.
    faulty 'inverter' perhaps?
    not sure
any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    cheers

I have a G5 1.8Ghz with a GeForce 6800 card and a 30' Cinema Display. Very soon after purchase I noticed the screen would not display anything sometimes. Eventually I noticed that by unplugging the Cinema Display's Firewire and/or USB connector (usually firewire) the display would instantly come on. I guess there is some sort of power level threshold that has to be met before the monitor will display an image.

  • Dark Display MBP OS 10.4

My six years old MBP OS 10.4.x Tiger all of the sudden the display turned black. I hardly see the content of the desktop only when there is some light on the room, looks like I have reduce the light to the Display.
I have tried to reset the PRAM with the opion, ctrl, P, R key combination and it did not work. It boots-up OK, no problem with the HD neither Memory, I have not run any test on it though.
I have not had any trouble on my MBP until now and I have to say I have never reinstalled the OS.
Is there anything else I can try to get the problem solved??
Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Regards
    Alberto

    Hi;
Thank you for your response, I looked the link you send and also some other links regarding the NVIDIA card problems that could cause the display to be dark in some MBP around same age of mine.
I don't feel much confident enough to replace the video card by my self if this is the problem.
I think I will take my computer to some certify service centre and make sure this is the problem and can be fixed. I don't have the money right now to buy a new one.
Thank you very much for you assistance.
    Kind Regards

  • Dark display issues

Hi everyone. I just hooked up my mac mini to my hdtv and for some reason it is much darker than it should be. I've tried turning the brightness on my tv all the way up(I normally keep it at about half) but nothing changes. I tried running the display calibration in system preferences but still no change in the brightness effect. Has anyone ever encountered something similar? If yes, what did you do to resolve the issue? I'd really appreciate any help in fixing this. Take care.

No luck. I also discovered last night that it's not just an issue with my tv and a mini because I also hooked up my mac pro and a friend's macbook and I got the same issue. So maybe it's my tv or just my tv in combination with osx. I also called Apple and the only thing they were able to suggest is try to limit the cabling or try the mini-display port instead. If changing to display port doesn't help(and I don't at all expect that it will) I'll be done with it.
I appreciate all the help fellas. Take care.

  • Dark Display after boot and wake up

    Hello,
I have seen some similar posts to what might be the same problem.
When I boot up my Mac and it gets to the desktop the screen is dark. I can barely make out the desktop. I have to either restart or completely power down and restart the system.
I have noticed that this happens when the Mac wakes up from a long nap.
So far it looks like this happens when applications are open.
Since I am using mine for business my e-mail is always open.
Sometimes Daylite is open and Acrobat 8.
This is happening more frequently now, and I have updated to 10.5.3.
    Any suggestions?

First, check out the related support topic called: MacBook Pro Blank Screen (Built - in & External).
This problem is an epidemic now. My year-old MBP is now on its third logic board in two months, and the problems continue.
The display just refuses to wake from sleep, and has only intermittently been fixable (without a motherboard replacement). As posted here, I have rebooted, rebooted from the install DVD, rebooted from an external disk, tried plugging the computer into numerous external monitors, zapped the PRAM (w and w/o the battery), removed the battery and power adaptor for a while, etc. The worst thing about this is that it sometimes comes back.
The computer was flawless for its first 8 months, and then in June 2008, all ** broke loose. I always update the computer with all new installs as they are offered, and my previous 11 Macs (including 3 laptops) never had a glitch. After the last full motherboard replacement, I have had the screen fraz with random patterns and then the computer lock-up and even shut down automatically.
All I can say is thank god for Time Machine. I just plug in my back-up disk and all of my recent changes get sucked onto it, automatically, without me even seeing the screen. Then I just plug my back-up drive into the desktop and I can retreive what I desperately need. Not a solution, but a significant mitigation of an otherwise dire situation.
Finally, I do not want to even think about my iTunes DRM permissions. I have not updated them to each new motherboard, as I'd quickly run out of my 5 license "locations." So, half of my collection is currently unplayable.

  • G5 with dark display

    Hello
I use a PowerMac G5 PPC 2x2GHz with OSX 10.3.8. The Mac works as fileserver and is always connected with Apple Remote Desktop. Now, I like to make an upgrade to OSX 10.5 or 10.4.
For that, I must use a Monitor. But if I connect a Monitor, I didn't see anything on the Monitor. Restart on Mac and Monitor, no effect. It is always dark. I check the Monitor, change it, now difference. My Dealer check the graphic card, it works fine. But not on my Mac.
What’s wrong, what can I do?
I hope someone can help me.

Check you video card in your machine . I think its gone bad if you have a spare on to do that with . if not you can pull out the old card to check the contacts . Also someone on this forum said to heat up the contacts as well , but i would be very careful if you do that one .You mite as well have a bad video card it sounds like it to me .You can get a used one off ebay for a low price.

  • My Dead/Dim/Dark Display - Fixed!

I recently moved to a new apartment, and my iMac was unplugged for a couple of days. I set it up in the new place, and it started up. The screen quickly flashed gray, then went black. The monitor was very dim (no backlight), but I could see the login window and hear the drive working.
After totally freaking out, I tried the suggestions I found here: zapping PRAM a few times and booting into Open Firmware to reset NVRAM. Neither of those appeared to work.
What DID work was booting into Single User mode (hold down Apple-S while starting the computer). The white-on-black command-line interface loaded, I typed 'reboot', hit enter, and the machine works fine now.
Clearly my problem was software-related; I'd recommend trying the steps I went through before paying for a hardware repair.

I didn't take his post as "not nice". If anything, he was trying to be nice to the majority of people who were not as lucky as you. Call it voodoo, or just plain dumb luck, it's pretty clear to me given the experience I've had repairing Apple displays over the years that Apple's displays often have backlight inverter problems. It's also clear that Apple's lousy 1 year warranty on displays falls far short of almost every other display on the market. It's also clear that Apple has not made any commitment to help people out who suffer this rampid display problem, and believe me, there are more of them than you realize (what you see posted here is only a sample). So while it is nice that you think you found a solution that would help people, it isn't really a solution to the backlight inverter problem. My guess, is this is a fairly educated guess based upon experience, is that your iMac had a "hiccup", but it is on its way to the backlight inverter demise. I'd be interested in hearing how your iMac is doing in another 6 months.

  • Dark display at the bottom and a barely perceived ...

Hi. Two weeks ago I got a new Lumia720 and a noticed two things: one thing is that at the bottom of the screen it appears darker than in the other three sides of the screen, I have seen some videos and photos and I perceived the same in some of them. The other thing is that when I open the camera app or apps that use the camera as city lens, here maps, etc, if you are in a quit place or you take the back side of the phone to your ears, you can listen a little sound of the lens; it appears that is because of camera initialization, but I am not sure. I want to say that the phone works good but I want to know if this two things are a normal issue of the phone or that I should worry about this two things. I appreciate any comments or suggestions you can give me, and if you can take a look at your Lumia 720 and pay attention if it happens the same as me.
    Thank you very much.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I suppose there is a little unevenness in the illumination level around the edge, but it's really only slightly perceptible and you have to have a light background to be able to see it at all.
It's not surprising at all knowing how the backlight works, and it certainly doesn't bother me in the least. I'm not going to start fretting over it now that I've seen it because it only really occurs in conditions that I never replicate in real life.
