Dark Mac

Hello Okay here is the problem > My 17" mac power book is gone black It was working fine I had sept away from the computer and when i retuned is was black the small light on the front is glowing but if I hit any key it stays black no sounds no noting even if I hold down the restart key nothing . just blackness what should I do . It's not responding It will not let a disk to be inserted or restart HELP !!

Well from first impression it seems that the powerbook went to sleep and after that it somehow froze. I have had this happen with my powerbook a couple of times. First hopefully you were not writing anything to the hard drive, second what I did was to hold down the power button until it shuts down and then turn it on again, if for some reason that doesn't work then close the powerbook, unplug it from the power supply turn it upside down and take the battery off. Leave it off for about 30 seconds put the battery back on and try to restart the computer (plug it in as well is you want). That's what I have done in the past. Good luck

I am using a Mac and when I save my files as a jpeg, the files become much smaller, and consequently darker and blurrier.  What can I do to fix this?  I have tried to figure out how to chat with someone at Adobe, but they certainly don't make it easy to do.  At the moment, this program is useless to me.  Very depressing....

    Hello,
I would like to inform you that not all the browsers and online PDF readers support copying text from a PDF. If you have opened the PDF online, please download PDF file to your computer and then open the file in Adobe Reader.
Please share a screenshot if the issue still persists.

  • Monitor goes dark on 2008 Mac Pro Tower with ATI Radeon 5870 Card

I have a 2008 Quad Core Intel Mac Pro Tower running 10.6.8.
The original graphics card had trouble with HD movies of any kind and eventually my screen would sometimes not turn on (stayed black) when the computer was turned on.
So I replaced the graphics card for both reasons to a ATI Radeon 5870 PCIe with a GB rather than the 256 that came with the machine.
The problem was solved. I got a new monitor, one that is like the latest ones and all has been working great for a few years.
Then recently the monitor started going dark while the computer was on. (no screen saver or anything like that, I can be in the middle of work on a photo or video).
    Trouble shooting I have tried.
A forum said drag the mouse to the hot corner for a while and then back. Well, I tried, assuming I was dragging the mouse to the corner. Didn't work.
I tried using the keyboard commands to shut down the computer. It didn't work.
I tried plugging the keyboard into other USB ports and tried to shut down the computer. No luck.
The only thing that works is shutting down the computer with the power button.
on start up the monitor is back on.
Sometimes it works for days like this, other times the monitor stays on only minutes.
The monitor is fine. Tested my old monitor on the computer to make sure it wasn't my new monitor.
    So the questions are:
    Can it be over heating?
is it worn out, toast, done and or dead and dieing?
Should I buy a replacement graphics card VS finally upgrading and getting a new computer (lots of $$$$ but then I do work in HD Video so....)
    any help is appreciated
    thanks

Replacing FBDIMMs would be today inexpensive and worth doing.
No one knows if heat is an issue without your using thermal sensor monitor. Probably want to up the default fan speeds while at it.
And because you don't have Lion+ then even more reason to setup a small maintenace volume on another drive with OS X basic system for repairs. In fact you should always have a bootable backup or two  you can rely on.
Restarting may work, or it  may be you have now new issue with corrupt fies or directory that a safe boot even is no guarantee of fixing.
When in doubt, try a clean new OS install on another drive.
    And FBDIMMs: $25 for a 2x2GB set on Amazon.com
You want to get  the most out of what  you have, a small investment  in RAM,  maybe recycle those drives for 2-4TB units. And an SSD will have system responding better and perform better.
My guess, the 5870 wasn't needed and was overkill and a 5770 for almost  half would have been more than adequate.

  • 2010 mac mini - monitor goes dark every few sec's problems since Mavericks Install

My Wife updated her 2010 Mac mini from Mountain Lion to Mavericks and ever since, after start, up the display  intermittently flashes a dark screen, every few seconds.  (within 3-10 seconds or so, there will be another period of dark screen, that may last aprox. 1- 6 seconds.  The timing of this changes constantly.  The finder and all apps I have seen are affected in the same way. it seems to be an all-the-time problem
the monitor is an OptiQuest Q9, and the system connects via an Apple mini display to VGA adapter (supplied with the mac mini) , then a vga cord into the monitor, which has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024.
The only workaround we have found is to boot the mac with the monitor cable disconnected, then reconnect the monitor cable after boot up is complete. In that case, the monitor does not flash, until the mac is shutdown or restarted again.
    Steps I have already tried:
    Zapped P-Ram
Reset SMC (shutdown, waited with power unplugged, then reattached power and  rebootted
    Repaired disk permissions,
    repaired disk
    re-download and reinstalled mavericks fresh.
changed display prefs for resolution, detected displays, etc.
    Changed background picture.
I don't know where to go with this anymore, and it has already taken a lot of time.
Who's got a Fix?    And if there is no fix, how do I revert from Mavericks to Mountain Lion?   The mac mini came with Snow Leopoard.

    Problem Fixed!
I found another page that referred to resetting the PMU (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2183) , which controls things like wake and sleep:
"If the settings in the PMU become corrupted, it can result in operational anomalies such as your computer not turning on, not displaying video, or not waking from sleep, among other things. In these situations, you may need to reset your computer's PMU."
Anyway, it is pracitcally the same proceedure as resetting the SMC (SMC reset=  Shut down, disconnect power cord for 10 seconds, reconnect power cord, wait 5 more seconds, turn computer back on)
but it is slightly different:   (PMU REST = Shut computer down, disconnect power cord for 10+ seconds, reconnect power cord WHILE SIMULTANEOOUSLY PRESSING POWER BUTTON, let off power button for a few seconds, then press power button again to restart the mac mini.)
After this the display problem was fixed, but the fan ran at high speed, so I did one more SMC reset as described above. Now everything is in order.   This also fixed the issue of the mac mini not waking from sleep unless the power/sleep button on the mini was pressed (it wasn't responding to the keyboard to awaken). Now it's all good.
    Hope this helps somebody else...

  • Mac Printing Pics Too Dark

    Weird and Complex.
Document in Word (for Mac) using images from internet (jpg, png, monochrome and colour - from various NASA, JPL and other sources).  Printing Word .docx is fine.  Export document to PDF (using in-built Mac OS X PDF Print system) and PDF on screen is fine.  Print PDF using Mac Preview and it appears fine (colour a bit richer than .docx but OK).  Print from Windows Adobe Reader, same as Mac Preview app.  But print from Mac Adobe Reader (9.3.0) and the pictures come out as though the contrast is massively turned-up - monochrome pics far too dark and with a blue tint and colour pics darker and way OTT blue tint.  This is destroying the pictures as the colour (and particularly blue) is very significant in the scientific pictures.
Pictures are from many different sources and jpg and png so I have not doctored them in any way - and the .docx prints fine.
When printing from Adobe Reader I have tried with Printer managing the colour and with ColourSync enabled (automatic profile) and it makes no difference.  It appears just Adobe Reader on Mac that is the problem.
(As it on print only I cannot post samples to illustrate - if important I could scan the bad rint but that would probably adjust things further)
Update additional info: Pictures are either 8 bit RGB or grey scale (8 bit).  Some have embedded ColoyrSync profiles (e.g. sRGB IEC61966-2.1 or Generic RGB Profile or Dot Gain 20%) some have no embedded profile - all come out badly and all affected.  I tried using Photoshop to add a profile to one of the images without a profile and it made no difference.  Printing from Photoshop (CS4) is fine (including photos without profiles - comes out same as printing original .docx)  If I import the pages into Photoshop and print them they come out fine - just as printing the .docx - so I think there is nothing wrong with the PDF but it looks like it is the Adobe Reader printing.
    Any ideas.
    Many thanks
    Simon

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Check the display calibration and see if the gamma is set to 2.2 or 1.8. If it's set at 2.2 then set it to the Mac standard 1.8. See if that will lighten them up. Also check to make sure if you print one of the photos it will also match the display.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • You now have a booster for boosting audio called boom--do you have anything for adding brightness for viewing streamed tv/movies on mac just to dark on my macbookpro

mac has a booster for volume--called boom-is there anything for viewing stream tv/movies on mac to make brighter--streaming tv is so dark you can not see--what is out there for this problem

    Hi shldr2thewheel,
it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Sincerely in need of help once again,
    Kim

  • LCD monitor too dark on Mac Mini

I have tried both a Viewsonic VP730b and a Samsung 740BX and both are way too dark.
Here's the wierd thing. If you unplug the DVI connector in the back, and plug it back in, the image looks good.
But if you then restart the mini, the image goes back to being way too dark.
    Any suggestions ?
    thanks,
    m

    Apple, are you there ?
Apple don't really monitor these discussions - they are user-to-user so the only way to have Apple themselves respond to this is by contacting them and reporting the issue. here, you'll only get responses from other Apple users - except in rare instances where an Apple staffer may hit on a problem he/she decides to help with. That isn't to say a Moderator may not notice you message and escalate the issue upwards, but of course that wouldn't help your specific case.
OK, all that said, it sounds to me like your display is not being correctly autodetected, and that the system DOES correctly autodetect the monitor when you unplug the display and plug it back in, but fails to again at the next reboot.
The first thing to suggest is that you ensure the DVI adaptor is very firmly inserted into the port, and the thumb screws tightened up completely. A number of video problems with minis have been caused by slightly loose/poor contact issues with the DVI adapter so it needs to be solidly attached. next is then ensure the VGA connector from the screen is firmly attached to the DVI adaptor and the thumb screws tightened. Then reboot.
If the screen comes up dim/dark even after the connectors are firm, open the displays preference panel. Does the name of your display (or it's model number) appear at the top of the panel? If not, then the display isn't detected, so click the 'Detect Displays' button. If that doesn't bring the display model up, then the most likely cause is either the display isn't outputting the correct signal to auto detect (very unlikely with these two models you list) or the DVI adapter is faulty.
If the display name is showing, click the Color tab, then the calibrate button, and run through a basic calibration (ie, Expert Mode UNchecked). At the end, save the calibrated profile and exit the preference pane. The reboot. If the Mac detects the display at all, it should autoload the calibrated profile you saved and thus the problem should disappear.
If the fault remains, then again it could be a faulty DVI adapter, or an issue with a MacOS preference pane. If you go through the procedure I suggest and the problem still persists, post back.

  • Photos print dark using my mac, fine with PC. Can this be adjusted?

I recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Air and am now having trouble with photo printing. My HP Photosmart printer has worked beautifully for frame worthy printing, but all my photos come out super dark now when printing from my Mac Book Air. What's the deal? Is there a setting to change or are they not compatible? Please help!

Hmm lots of stuff could come into play here.
    Are you printing a jpg?
What program are you using to print?
Does it look fine on screen?
What are your print/color settings when the print dialouge comes up?

  • PDFs print out darker in Windows Reader 9.0 than Mac Reader 9.0, also Win Reader 9.0 darker than 8.x

    Hi,
Using Adobe Reader 8.1.2 for Mac OS X and 8.* for Windows, my PDFs printed out identically for both platforms.
However, after I upgraded Windows Adobe Reader from 8 to 9.0.0, it prints out the PDFs significantly darker than before, whereas when I upgraded the OS X Adobe Reader from 8.1.2 to 9.0.0, the print outs did not get any darker.
Now they are both on v9.0.0, Windows printouts are significantly darker than the OS X printouts, using the same PDF file, printer, etc.
Any idea what's going on here? Is there some of weird gamma correction-type thing going on - although I thought that only affected monitor displays, not print outs? Or should I report it as a bug?
The PDF I am testing is here:
    http://egalo.com/guitar-fretboard-visualisation-sheet.pdf
I also tried printing it out from other PDF viewers - Preview.app on OS X and Foxit Reader on Windows - and they both print out normally i.e. the same as Adobe Reader 8.* for all platforms, and 9.0 for OS X - definitely not as dark as Adobe Reader 9.0.0 for Windows.
I'm running OS X 10.5.4 and Windows XP Professional as a VM using Parallels.
Needless to say, I want to be able to generate PDFs that have the same darkness regardless which PDF viewer or OS platform is being used to print it out.
    Thanks, Xen
    [Edited to improve clarity]

    Thanks Michael,
The file that I have sent her has both vector and raster graphics in it, and they were apparently printing fine. It just seems to be text that's not printing correctly.

  • My 27inch i Mac screen has gone darker, like a colour burn but also a bit washed out. Can anyone advise what may be wrong before I take it for repair?

My 27inch i Mac screen has gone darker all of a sudden. It's almost like a colour Burn and it's also washed out. Can anyone advise what the problem may be before I take it for repair?

Check the settings in System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing > Display.
It's possible to alter some of those settings accidently by hitting the wrong key combinations.

  • Lightroom 5 color labels appear dark causing mac pro monitor(s) to go black, have to restart, get a kernel panic os 10.7 5

I have a Mac Pro 12 core, with a Nvidia Quadro Pro 4000 video card. I have been using lightroom with this video card since 2011 without a problem. I updated to os 10.7.5, which apple says it is the latest f  and now when i use lightroom (after about 15 minutes),  my monitor goes black, which i am sure is a video card issue which involves lightroom settings, and i have to restart my system. After restart I get a kernel panic report. I unistalled lightroom, and had no crashes. I reinstalled it and i started to get computer crashes again. (not lightroom crashes but computer  -) When i open lightroom, the color labels appear saturated and much darker than usual. I took a screenshot www.jlanceimaging.com/lrscreenshot.jpg.
Since updating to 10.7.5 i have had this issue with lightroom and the video card.
I also went into photoshop an unchecked the graphics processor but still got the crashes.
and last;y, i opened up lightroom 4 and had no problems

You don't say what, if anything, you have done to test, resolve or rule out causes, so you can always assume hard restarts, freezes, and not safe shutdowns will make for more problems (corrupt files, file system, directory, etc).
Running Apple Hardware Test; Reset SMC; repairing your drives; ruling out cables, controllers, external devices, even drivers for printers and other devices.
If you are on a UPS, it should be 1000VA or larger (1300-1500VA). If there are other devices and you could be exceeding the load on circuit breaker, also worth looking into and sometimes requires adding a new circuit line.
