Dark movie

Using an iMacG4, OS 10.4.5 and iMovie 4.0.1: Importing a movie fragment (30 seconds) from VHS via MiniDV camcorder, the image is much darker in iMovie than either VHS or DV. "Sharing" via quicktime is also too dark. How can I lighten the image in iMovie?

It's quite usual for the video to appear darker on a
computer monitor.
... and: if, recorded under the same circumstances, esp. in darker/low key surroundings, VHS "look"/feels darker...! I remember well, when the first miniDVs came on the market, most testers were impressed by the improved contrast, "crispyness", sharpeness - and that "live" feeling....
that hasn't to do alone with the better tech-specs of miniDV, but it is a pychologic phenomenom....
finally, as you said:
never judge pic quality on a computer's monitor!

  • Darkness movie after going to iMovie

Why a specific movie in iMovie is darker than in iTunes or Quicktime ? I imported to edit it but iMovie changed the video settings to a darker movie. If I change the video settings manually I cannot find a way of having the same result that I see in iTunes or Quicktime

    No solution.

  • Apple TV2 Dark movies

I just buy and ATV2 and have and "old" plasma TV with no hdmi but connect trough VGA and it´s right i see 720i correct in my tv, colors too but in movies i see is soo dark, shadows go to black. I try rgb low, high, modes but in low is even worst. I read than my atv could detect my TV (because VGA port) is a pc monitor and send a 0-255 signal and not 16-235 color space (TV). How can try other mode?
The solution another TV but my plasma is ok

Sorry; I don't understand your message. Are you talking about the restore option? And does your message imply that the update that makes Airplay possible will destroy the download capability?
I am seeing this result most of the time, but not every single time. Still...essentially unusable at the moment; I have the deluxe Comcast package that is otherwise fine. Apple...if you're reading this....this is a "will return the **** useless product" issue.

  • Compressed mov appears dark on a Windows computer

(This is cross-posted in the QuickTime for Macintosh group)
I am using Qt 7.0.4 on Macintosh OS 10.3.9
When I export a movie using any compression (even the slightest) it appears dark on a Windows computer (much more so than the gamma difference between Mac and PC monitors) but it appears normal on the Macintosh. If I export the movie with no compression it appears the same on the Mac and the PC.
    Please see this example: http://www.sketchpad.net/quarkmulti_bg_image384.htm
I really need to compress the movie for bandwidth reasons, but all the compression settings I have tested gives the same result - dark movie in Windows.
Does anyone have any ideas? If I use QT Pro for Windows, will the results be different?

Thank you for your reply. I have tried MPEG-4 and H.264. I have the 23 in Apple Cinema HD display on both the Mac and PC computers. Both the Mac and PC monitors are calibrated. I calibrated the Mac monitor using the 2.2 Television Gamma to minimize the difference between the Mac and PC displays.
But there is a definite difference when I export with no compression. The movie comes out perfect. But there is a very noticeable difference when compressed. I have seen the gamma difference before using OS 9 and with my older monitors and this does not look the same.
I just wanted to know if this was a problem for others or only a problem with my setup. I suppose I could try it on a different monitor somewhere else.

  • The Movie is too Dark!

I am trying to watch a dvd movie on my laptop, however this movie has some rather dark scenes which don't appear very well on my matte screen.
I currently have my resolution set to 1440x900 and color to "Color LCD".
Does anyone have any suggestions of what I should do to make my "dark" movie more visible?
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I've noticed this as well, even with full brightness and a calibrated display. Not much you can do about it in my experience. LCD displays just aren't as good as CRTs when it comes to dark parts of movies. External LCD monitors tend to be brighter and thus better, but if you want a movie watching machine maybe glossy would have been the better pick, because in my experience they are best for movie watching in the dark.

  • UK - just shipped - week 37!

The title says it all, really. I ordered on the launch day as soon as the online store came back up. It's been prepared to ship since early on Monday morning (UK time), and in the last hour the order status changed to shipped.
However, looking at the online invoice from the order status page it looks like I'm getting a week 37! How is it that these are still floating around? Surely the stuff shipping out this week should be week 39 models..?

No. However I have tested 10 iPod Touch in the "week 37" batch, two of which I owned the others were demo units at Apple Stores and they all failed the screen test! We have numerious post here of week 37 owners who had bad screens and some who like me observed the in store units were also week 37 models and failed the test.
The problem doesn't present itself immediately. It only effects dark movies and photos, so a lot of people probably have this problem and don't know or it or simply think "that's just the way it is".

See the little white dots on the screen? Am I just too picky? Would you put up with it?

This is a week 38. You're right in arms length most of them are not that noticeable but I can still see some. Of course you don't realize they're there when you watch music videos since they're usually fast but when watching dark movies or seeing pictures you can see them.
I would think that for such a small screen costing $400 they should be near perfect and stuck pixels, negative blacks shouldn't be present in any of the production batches.
I'll give it try on replacing it next week and maybe I'll get a week 39 and hopefully it will be a little better.

  • Why brightness changes when subtitles appear?

Good evening, I’d like to ask for advice about a problem I found on iTunes running on Mavericks. I convert a video content (using handbrake)  adding subtitles from .srt file. When I watch that movie, if (and onlu when) subtitles appear, picture brightness becomes clearer. The same file opened using  VLC has no problem. My mac mini (latest generation entry-level) is connected via HDMI to a LCD TV. Searching the net I found nothing, does anyone have an idea on how to fix it? Thanks!

I am experiencing the same issue and it seems to be indeed a problem caused solely by iTunes as I only see this issue with movies (rented from the iTunes store and) played back with iTunes. Streaming videos in Safari (e.g. Netflix) and activating subtitles doesn't show the brightness adjustment issues.
It's really annoying as dark movie scenes become almost unwatchable as the brightness level changes all the time. I hope that Apple will fix this issue in the next release of iTunes or Mavericks whichever is causing this issue. In the meantime, I will look for alternative movie players. I'll give VLC a try, but wonder if it can play back movies rented from the iTunes store.

  • CS4 to CS6 After Effects Color Issue with Linked Photoshop Files

Hi, I just recently converted a CS4 project into CS6 and everything work wonderfully except that the photoshop files are different in color.  I know this because I took screenshots of the video I was working with and edited them in Photoshop before importing them back in to the project so I know the color should match.  This screenshot may help (as you can see I've increased the brightness and contrast in the affected area so that you may see what is happening.  There is a Photoshop layer that is covering up a number of scratches on the guiter (it is very beat up) and in the original (CS4) project they hid them perfectly while in the CS6 project they are clearly there.
I am not sure why the Photoshop files are acting differently but they are.  I need to re-export, please help if possible.  Thank you so much.  Jason.

In Bridge, my color settings are shown as synchronized (some kind of universal deal I guess), but the Photoshop files and the After Effects file are not color managed.  What is confusing me is how completely "not color managed" files can interpret RGB values for anything different than their face value?
    My Workaround (Not a Solution):
In light of how specific this problem is, I've decided to simply match the Photoshop files to the After Effects footage with a gamma adjustment using a levels effect.  For this situation settings the levels to .88 corrected the problem.  However, exporting the project from Premiere results in a darker movie file than the orginal so I was forced to correct the gamma on the export as well.  The new export (after the corrections) looks less appealing to me but as a standalone product is acceptable.

  • Screen lighting

    Hello everyone,
I just received a new MacBook as a gift, to replace my old iBook, who sadly, passed away from old age.
Anyways, this MacBook is working great, except for one little thing. The screen tends to go a few shades darker, then bright again for no specific reason. It's a bit irritating. I don't really like my display very bright, but why does it keep flickering between bright and darker?
It's not bad when it's dark, the screen/display is still very easy to see. It just hurts my eyes to keep switching between the 2.
And, it is not the same as when the brightness is reduced before "Display Sleep" (as in, it does not go as dark)
    Any help, or ideas?
    Cheers

First of all, I too know the feeling of losing my Old Whitey iBook to old age :'(
Ambient light sensor! An awesome feature but I agree it can be annoying if you aren't trying to. I've noticed it can even change if I shift my body and block a bit more light. Also if I switch between apps (browser v. dark movie) it'll change the brightness. Since you like your display a little dark, you can always disable it by System Preferences > Display > and uncheck "Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes" and viola, no more changing brightness randomly.

  • ATV Picture quality issue

    Hello,
my ATV is connected to a Philips 47PFL8404H via HDMI and I have problems with the picture quality. While all my movies are looking perfect on my 30'' Cinema Display, they look "drowned" on the TV. The Contrast is fine, but at dark movie scenes every detail get lost in the black.
Working on the contrast, and/or Brightness at the TV dosn't help.
    Any suggestions?

Try Settings>Video and adjust HDMI options - there's a light and dark output option amongst other things.
Chance of you getting identical output on the 2 devices are remote as there are so many parameters at play, and potentially differing gamma treatment of monitor and TV.

  • TV advice

I am looking into purchasing a new tv between 55 and 60 inches. I am looking for a recommendation as to what type of TV would best suit the room.  The room has 3 windows and a sliding glass door so it is extremely bright during the day so I am trying to avoid glare.  I watch a lot of sports and occassional move along with my daughter and her 5 year old kid shows.  Can you give me some advice as to whether I am better off with a LED, LCD or Plasma and what branch is recommended.
    Thanks

Personally  I would stay away from LCD TV's   They are on the way out.  And I think they are not good for sports or other fast action.
The issue is fast moving objects tend to ghost.  Meaning, you watch a football go flying across the screen it might have a slight tail and it may not be smooth.
I have a Plasma and the picture quality is outstanding 3 years later.  Sports are awesom.  The colors are simply brilliant and vibrant
Plasma aside the new LED TV sets are simply stunning.  My 2 gripes with the Plasma.  They don't show dark movies as well.  However calibartion helps.  But the generate a lot of heat.  Not an issue in the winter time.  But when it is 92F outside and your AC is fighting the house.  That Plasma throws off a good heat signature.
I went into a Magnolia the other day and wet my shorts checking out the Sony 4K
