Dark Screen, tried repairs

I recently lost, or think i lost, the backlight to my screen.  I changed both the inverter board and the inverter power cable and I still have a dark display which would lead me to believe that the problem is with the screen itself but if that's the case wouldn't the screen be "off" not dark? If I shine a light on the screen I can see the graphics, I thought that definitely meant the screen was ok.  Any one else experience this?  Could it be malware?

I am a new owner of Mac products. I am also a conversion from PCs and Laptops (been owning and using them for over 15 years). I was NOT impressed when I bought my first Mac on 12-11-07 and had the same problem you described - nearly black screen. This never happened to me with the other manufacturers of PCs and Laptops - Ever.
Anyway, I marched straight to the Apple Store carting that defective Mac. That night I had an appointment with an Apple Genius the next day. On 12-12-07, I stomped into the Apple Store again with that non-performing equipment. The Apple Genius whipped it out of the box and in less than 3 minutes rendered a judgment - the backlight was dead.
The Apple Genius swapped out (replaced) my defective equipment directly after his equipment eval.
I cannot say what impressed me more. The immediate swap out of the equipment without me showing receipts and IDs OR how contrite he was over me receiving blatantly defective equipment straight-out-of-the-box.

  • IMac won't boot, dark screen after normal grey start up screen

Quite perplexed with this problem, have tried everything I can think of.
Computer: iMac 2.16 gHz 24" mid 2006, 4 gig RAM
    OS: 10.6.8
Froze and required hard shutdown.  Subsequent to this, has behaved consistently:
Normal grey screen with Apple logo and spinning timer, can hear disk activity. Then the screen goes dark and nothing else happens (although the computer is still on).  Have to  perform hard shutdown.
    Have tried:
    1. Booting into single user mode (multiple times) and performed fsck, no errors noted
    2. after using 'exit' command in single user mode, computer attempts to reboot but then freezes after noting 'panic'
    3. Reset PRAM (no change)
    4. Tried safe mode boot, progress bar on grey screen progresses, then spinning timers comes on, then same crash with dark screen
    4. Disassembled computer, removed hard drive, mounted normally in external SATA enclosure.  I backed up critical data, ran Disk Utility Repair, no errors noted.
    5. Reinstalled HD, reassembled computer, rebooted, same issue
    6. Attmepted to boot with Snow Leopard Install disc to perform a fresh Achive and Install - after prolonged grey screen with spinning timer and audible DVD drive access, same switch to dark screen and no further progress
    7. Same panic message and stalled boot attempt noted when booting into single user mod
I'm stumped.  My assumption is that there is a courrpt file that is causing a kernel panic during boot and I assumed that I'd be able to perform an archive and install but when this failed I'm guessing all I can do is replace the hard drive with a new one and then go through the hassle of transferring all the data over manually.
I would welcome hearing any other observations, similar experiences or other ideas.  MTIA.

One update ... when I boot the computer and get the 'dark screen',  I hear disc activity.  So I started hitting the return key and I get the chime with each return as if I'm on the log in screen and hitting the return to log in without entering any text.
That would argue there is a problem with the screen.
However, it does not explain why the computer display works normally during single user mode and hangs (without the screen going dark) when trying to reboot from this mode.

  • Dim/Dark Screen, How to fix it?

I own a Black 3G iPhone that has recently suffered from water damage. I had fixed it from the water damage a day after it had dropped into the toilet (the toilet was clean thank god) but a series of other problems had occurred after fixing it up. Such as harder to press Home Button, some problems regarding its performance, but nothing as worse as having a Dim/Dark Screen.
I had used it one night from texting and calling people to leave it in my charger cradle for the rest of the night. But that morning I had awoken to my phone being a dim/dark screen. I've tried adjusting the brightness meter but it still was dim. I tried blocking the proximity sensor and the ambient sensor with my finger to see if anything would happen but nothing happened. I opened the phone and gave it a yonder and everything was securely in and dry.
I had already restored it, restarted it, what else could I do to preserve me from going to the apple store.

Nowadays with all the chips/circuitry so embedded into single chip sets and boards a problem in one area will effect the unit as a whole and is unfixable other than to replace the whole board unfortunately but welcome to the disposable generation is one of the downsides of downsizing (pun intended) electrical equipment. you could try to find a repair centre to look at it but it sounds like you have multiple failures over multiple portions of the elec board and i would say by the time you had replaced all the damaged components the total cost with labour and all would be far and above the cost of a new phone sorry but i reckon unless you can live with the issues (which will probably get worse over time as more components are affected) i would suggest looking at buying a new one

  • Why do I get a dark screen in Windows 7 after Boot Camp?

    Hello fellows!
    What is wrong?
About this week I have tried to install Windows – Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit – on my MacBook Pro(Early 2011-model). Everything works perfectly, except one thing! The screen.
Before I am installing the drivers from Windows Support the screen is lightly and everything, but after the restart, everything on the screen goes dark. I have tried to find the correct drivers, but then it tells me that: I don't have to correct Graphic adapter.
I have to graphic cards: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and an Intel HD Graphics 3000.
Yesterday I downloaded a program known as gfxCardStatus – a program, which can switch between the graphic cards on your computer –, and I tried it.
Before installing this program I knew that Mac OS X was running the Intel-model, when Windows 7 was running the AMD. Then, I switched from Intel to AMD on MAC OS X, then I booted up Windows and reinstalled the drivers from WindowsSupport, and everything worked properly! Until I rebooted to get multicore working.
I was so frustrated that I gave up and waited for today. Then this morning I tried to do the same thing, to get a lightly screen again. But a terrible thing happened. Mac OS X got the same problem. But after some time working things out it worked properly.. On Mac OS X!
What can you do for me?
I hope you can tell me what is wrong with the Boot Camp. I really want Windows to run properly. I cannot accept a dark screen, and I hope somebody out there has experience and at the same time got the awesome personality to help me through this problem.
Operating System on Mac: Mac OS X Lion.
Opereating System on Windows: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
    Have a nice day, everybody.

I can easily get into Windows. It is just that the drivers don't seem to work correct, and makes the screen dark.

  • My iphone 5 suddenly wont fully boot...it stuck on the apple logo and goes of after 20 -25 secs and comes on by itself after a minute or two but still stuck on apple logo..also i am able to see a bit of lighting on the dark screen whenever it goes of

my iphone 5 on the ios 7.1.2 suddenly wont fully turn on...it gets stuck on the apple logo and stays like that for approximately to 90 secs then goes blank but I can see a bit of lighting  behind the dark screen....it goes off by itself and comes on by itself trying to boot but still gets stuck on the apple logo after the dim light shows....when I connect to iTunes my phone can only be recognised only in recovery mode thus if I force it into recovery mode. My main worry is I don't have a back up of any of my data...on icloud I have just less than 2GB of my data which is as a result of incomplete back up...HOW CAN I GET THIS PHONE WORKING AGAIN WITHOUT LOSING MY DATA...if I can only just recover my data I would really appreciate it as I really  need almost everything on it back...if I can only get retrieve my data and lose the phone I wouldn't mind at all....Anybody know how to resolve this??Kind Regards

Anyone have any suggestions? or is everyone else just as clueless as me !

    (10.6.8 Intel core duo 2009)
    Hi,
I have a grey screen and grey rotating wheel startup probs. I have tried repairing with the disk utility, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode (which gave a subset of the errors that 'disk repair' did- namely- 'invalid sibling link, invalid record count, invalid node structure, invalid key length)  and finally trying to get to archive&install the o/s, but it cannot find the destination volume. Is an erase the only option? PS I have backed up most files individually, but my daughter did not back up any from her user account. Any help would be appreciated. J

  • Windows 8 on macbook air (mid 2011) dark screen

I downloaded the windows 8 retail edition from dream spark and wrote the iso file into a usb drive. I installed the windows 8 using GUID partition map successfully and the windows 8 was bootable. But when it's first booted, it says "getting ready for the devices (some percentages)" and it went dark later. The laptop rebooted itself and went to the booting screen of windows 8. But after that the screen went dark again and I couldn't even set up the account. I tried to close and reopen the lid but the screen remained dark; also tried to refresh my pc in the efi menu but it couldn't fix the problem either. (I assume it had something to do with the drivers. I downloaded the latest bootcamp drivers into the usb drive but I don't think windows 8  would retreive that automatically after the installation.)

How do you install using Windows 8 RTM? Actually, what is RTM?
I have an EFI version I think and I've tried numerous times and it does not work. After researching, it has to do with the partition map and such as you guys talked about.
I used rEFIt and magically, Windows 8 started to install then an error happened and I was not able to see what happend. Thereafter, I could not install it on my mid 2011 mac air due to the partition map.
I even tried repeating the steps for it to install again (after I installed rEFIt) but that didn't work either.

Mine's a late '09, but there have been display issues with iMacs.
Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Turned the ipad on but dark screen with rotating wheel is all I get?

turned the ipad on but all I have is a dark screen and a rotating wheel?

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Woke up to OS X Utilities window with 4 options. Tried repairing discs, and ended up re-installing the OS and now everything is gone. Please help.

Woke up to OS X Utilities window up on my screen with 4 options. One was backup from Time Machine, another was to re-install the OS, the third was to open Safari for help, and the last was to repair discs. I tried repairing all of the discs including the two external hard drives I had attached and it said that they were all good. Then I proceeded to re-install the OS, but it would only allow me to install Mavericks and I had already upgraded to Yosemite. I tried restarting with a safe boot and it got stuck half way for more than an hour, so I just did a hard restart. Without a recent Time Machine backup, I decided to try re-installing the OS. The funny thing is that it would only let me install it on my external HD and not the internal HD - and there was a message saying that a newer OS was on the internal HD and so it could not be installed there. So after it was installed, it started up like it was a brand new mac - asking me for my apple ID, wifi, etc. And now I have nothing on the computer - no programs, files, anything. And the Macintosh HD showed up in the finder, but it ejected itself and is no longer viewable. Any ideas on how I can get this back to normal??? I am pretty desperate at this point.

Thanks! My trackpad has been broken for a while and physical clicks no longer work, only taps. I plugged in a mouse and it worked.
Doesn't seem like good design to me.

Hello blahvegas25, Usually when this occurs, the BIOS has turned the system over to the operating system, and for some reason the operating system cannot take control of the system.
This can be caused by a failed or failing hard drive, or a corrupted operating system, or a corrupted Master Boot Record.
You might try tapping the F-9 key and se if you can run a hardare test to see if the system can detect any hardware issues.
If it cannot, it may be the operating system has become corrupted. If you have a Vista or Windows 7 DVD, you might could try to repair startup issues, but I don't think this would work.
You might could resolve the issue by a HP Recovery Restore procedure by tappint the F-11 key at startup, and enter the HP Recovery Restore utility. This would format the hard drive and wipe it clean of all the data. You would loose any data that has been added to the computer since you started using it.

  • My mac will turn on but it wont load.It just sits there on the white screen trying to load. What can I do?

My Mac will turn on but doesn't load. Its sits on the white apple screen trying to load. Is there anything ican do to fix it?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

jpmarkques post is a good start point, after folling his directions, you can try detect displays. Also try different rsolution and refresh rates.
Most of the projectors I have used support a 1024X768 res.
Youcan also try a pram reset if it still does not detect.
Leave theproctor connected and powered up, power down the MBP.
Power back up the MBP and hold the following keys before you hear the start up chime:
Option, command, P,R (no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times.
