Dark screen using power cord after Tiger 10.4.3 update
My update from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 on a Powerbook G4 went fine until I realized that plugging in the power cord caused the screen to go dark. I can get it to come back on by shutting it and opening again, but it stays on for only one minute (exactly). Only other way it works is when the battery is charged and I can unplug the power cord.
I have run Repair Permissions a couple of times, and restarted, to no avail.
Anyone have a simple answer to this one?
Thanks.
Powerbook G4 1.5, 512 RAM Mac OS X (10.4.3)
See there are separate Energy Saver settings for with power cord and without in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver. If indeed the Energy Saver is set to put the display to sleep after one minute while the power cord is plugged in, that would explain your behavior.
If that is not what the settings are set for, then I suggest trying to reset the power manager as this article describes:

Why do I get a dark screen in Windows 7 after Boot Camp?
Hello fellows!
What is wrong?
About this week I have tried to install Windows – Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit – on my MacBook Pro(Early 2011-model). Everything works perfectly, except one thing! The screen.
Before I am installing the drivers from Windows Support the screen is lightly and everything, but after the restart, everything on the screen goes dark. I have tried to find the correct drivers, but then it tells me that: I don't have to correct Graphic adapter.
I have to graphic cards: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and an Intel HD Graphics 3000.
Yesterday I downloaded a program known as gfxCardStatus – a program, which can switch between the graphic cards on your computer –, and I tried it.
Before installing this program I knew that Mac OS X was running the Intel-model, when Windows 7 was running the AMD. Then, I switched from Intel to AMD on MAC OS X, then I booted up Windows and reinstalled the drivers from WindowsSupport, and everything worked properly! Until I rebooted to get multicore working.
I was so frustrated that I gave up and waited for today. Then this morning I tried to do the same thing, to get a lightly screen again. But a terrible thing happened. Mac OS X got the same problem. But after some time working things out it worked properly.. On Mac OS X!
What can you do for me?
I hope you can tell me what is wrong with the Boot Camp. I really want Windows to run properly. I cannot accept a dark screen, and I hope somebody out there has experience and at the same time got the awesome personality to help me through this problem.
Operating System on Mac: Mac OS X Lion.
Opereating System on Windows: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit
Have a nice day, everybody.I can easily get into Windows. It is just that the drivers don't seem to work correct, and makes the screen dark.

Is it safe to use power cord of one country to another using spike guard?
Hi,
I have imac from japan & it has japanese power cord type, but I'm in UAE n it wont fit in my wall socket.
However, it works fine when I use it with spike guard. So it is fine? It wont damage my imac?
Thanks
SandeshIf you are wanting to install a Windows Update .msu file, use WUSA.EXE instead:

Battery issues::its dead::only using power cord
i'm ok with only using the power cord. i can't afford a new battery right now. if i put it to sleep and then unplug the computer, is this ok? or should i shut it down? if i want to move my computer around my house (using wifi) what should i do everytime? thanks
iBook G4 2004 Mac OS X (10.4.10)matarazzo, Welcome to the discussion area!
You should shut it down to guarantee no data loss. -
When to use Power cord...
Should I keep my Mac plugged in with the power cord or is it better to only charge it when the battery life is low. I have heard before that its not good to leave the charger plugged in all the time. or does that not matter.
If you keep it plugged in, it will prevent the battery from gaining excessive cycle counts, which can be a determining factor of a batteries lifespan. However, cycle count is a highly debated topic because there is no perfect evidence for either argument. At any rate, it's probably best to keep it plugged in, if you let the computer under 50%, plug it in, if you wait till it gets too low and plug it in it will generate more cycles. I keep mine plugged in most of the time, unplug occasionally.

Hi, i'm using firefox nightly.
After today's flash player update im facing this error "style error #2134" when playinf videos on some websites. Tell me about info i have to provide to solve this problem. ThanksHello,
I am not a Flash developer, but based on my search, this particular error 'style error #2134' means that the Flash video / game that you are viewing is not able to store data on the local storage (your machine).
Can you please check the setting described in the Adobe KB [http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/error-2134-cannot-create-sharedobject.html Enable Storage for Flash Player], to see if this helps in resolving the issue.
Thank you -
Shutdown screen using power button...
I get a screen telling me to shutdown using the power button. How can I fix this?
If this is a kernel panic, which it sounds like, then see: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic. Post the panic log here.

MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates
Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
What happens is this:
1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
Good luck! -
Powerbook G4 Gray Screen on boot up after trying to install an update
I was trying to update my computer but when I was doing the install and shut down all my programs to complete the install it said it could not find the application from which it was trying to update. I closed the update and when I tried to get on the internet and the laptop froze. I turned off the laptop and when I turned it back on all I have is a gray screen. I have done a PMU reset as well as a RAM reset. Both of these have not solved the problem. I know it is probably software related. Would you reccommend booting from the OS X disc??? Please help!!
I believe your problem is software related not hardware. Try to do archieve install and install update by downloading 10.4.7 PPC combo from apple site and then do the rest of the update from software update.
I think this problem caused of the bug in the 10.4.7 the first released by apple has problem with software update app (I've seen few of our customer has to do archive install to solve their boot related problem after software update to 10.4.7). Apple already released the update and also they fix the bug so I believe it is already safe to do archive install and update your software to 10.4.7 from software update but just want to be safe do from combo update download.
Hope this help

Cannot connect to the internet using Cellular Data after iOS 6.0.1 update
While installing the iOS 6.1 update for my iPhone 4, I encountered an issue and had to restore it. Since completing the restore, I am only able to use a wifi connection to connect to the internet (apps not working when wifi isn't available, not even iMessage or safari - "Safari cannot open the page because it could not connect to the server"), although I have a mobile internet plan with my carrier. I also tried resetting the phone to its factory settings, but that didin't solve anything. Did any of you encounter this problem? How can I solve it?
Phone restart > if that doesn't work then do a reset of the settings. Full restore would be the last option.

After Tiger 10.4.11 update Final Cut Express won't open
I just ran the software updated for tiger 10.4.11. Now my final cut express won't open and run. The error report says:
Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000008
Does this look like a file or folder permissions issue? Where can I get info on software update rollback? Thanks in advance, very frustrating. Thanks for the tip BGreg but no joy. I repaired disk permissions, installed combo update 10.4.11, repaired disk permissions but FCE still won't run. Same error report as before. Any suggestions appreciated:

MPB Powers OFF when I connect the power cord
Just got a new MBP this weekend. When I connect the power cord after the battery gets low, the computer instantly shuts off. No warning, just shuts off. The battery can be at any charge level, and this will happen. Pull the power cord off, no problem. Put it back on, the computer is off. I have to restart, unsaved changes lost. This is my second MBP, and the first one never did this. I am about to drag it in to the Genius bar, but has this happened to anyone else? Sounds like a bad hardware issue to me. Could it be a settings issue? I've only been using it for about three days. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might try resetting the SMC and see if this helps.

T22 won't power up after bios update
i followed directions to a T, power cord in and battery at 100%.
update seemed to be proceeding properly and after about a minute computer beeped and shut down as i have witnessed during previoud tp bios updates.
now when i depress power button, hd activity light comes on very briefly and that's all i see or hear.
i have disconnected battery and ac adapter for a time and then re-inserted and still nothing.
if anyone knows what went wrong, please let me know, including the odds of this machine being worth fixing.
thanksWelcome to the forum!
Let's try this: take out your battery, media and hard drives. Unplug the AC.
Press "power" button 10 times in a row, holding it down 10 seconds each time, and 30 seconds the last time.
Plug the AC adapter back in, try to power on and keep your fingers crossed...
Good luck and let us know.
Cheers,
George

Using CS5.5 Master Collection for MAC, I can't use "Replace with After Effects composition" because I updated AE to CS6 (but only AE). Even that AE CS 5.5 is still installed, it won't connetct.
How can that be fixed?
Thanks a lot for any suggestions. Thanks for the answer: I tried different ways (after I read your suggestion) but it always changes back right away ... I can't change it.

Maybe try associating AE project files with 5.5 instead of 6.
