Dark spot behind pixels

So my T61p has a bizarre dark spot behind the pixels, as it shifts depending on one's point of view- it is darker than it should be, though not totally black (i.e. on white it shows as sort of greyish, and on black it shows up darker, as well)
A few months ago in another location it developed two light spots, but it wasn't bad enough to warrant going without a laptop until repaired, but this new development is a little more noticeable.  Are there any fixes for this that can be done without sending it for repairs? Also, if the screen is to be replaced, is there an estimate of cost and time?  As a graduate student, it would be quite difficult to go for any time without my laptop, as it is my primary computer, and is used for my research and data collection.
Currently I am running JScreenFix, although that is to be used primarily for dead or stuck pixels, and I don't think this is the case here.
Cheers

Contact Apple in the UK. They will resolve the problem.

  • Dark spots behind display..

Its been 4 months since I purchased my MBP and it has been working quite well since.
But recently it's displaying two odd dark blue spots close to the center of the screen.
At first I asumed that they were stuck pixels but then I realized that they do not interfere with the colors on the display, but actually they just seem like stains in the backround. Also they are most visible when I use bright colors, and they are not visible when the display is off.
All my attempts to correct this problem have not worked, I tried cleaning the screen with an LCD cleaner kit and I even tried pressing against them with my finger but there is no change.
I would be very thankful if someone could shed some light on this problem.

Have you called Apple Care about this issue? I would sugget you do because LCD spots issues are covered by the warranty and are replaceable. Take a look at this...

I've seen spots issues and yours seems to be one.. Goodluck!

  • Dead Pixels/Dark spot?

I was just working on some homework on my macbook pro and all the sudden I noticed this dark spot/dead pixel in the right center of my screen. At first I thought my screen just got dirty, but that was not the case. Can anyone tell me what this is... and if apple will cover this?

****... well here is the weird thing... there hasn't been any sort of blunt force or anything even close to that, that happened to my laptop. I make sure that if I ever take it out that it is gentally set down. I have the laptop sleeve as well as a laptop bag.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe when I sent my Macbook Pro into Apple to get the logic board replaced that somehow some sort of pressure was applied to the screen to cause this. Would the problem that I'm having appear several days/weeks/months after the actual day when some sort of pressure is applied to the screen? I think this whole dead pixel or whatever it is happened sometime within the past 3-4 days in which my laptop has been sitting here on my desk with nothing stacked on top of it.

  • Do I have to live with dark/dead pixels with my new 15" MBP? Yesterday I bought one and have one dark spot in the middle of the screen.

    Hello
Yesterday I bought a 15" MBP and found a dark spot in the middle of its screen right away while in the 1st-time-welcome-boot. What a welcome. Do I have to live with it? It is exactly one pixel missing its yellow subpixel. It would be ok if it would be in some corner - but its right in the middle of the screen. Suggestions/experiences in this matter anyone?

Thanks for your suggestions - took it back - got a new, mint, shiny one

  • Dark spot (not sure if it is a dead pixel).

I have a dark spot in my menu bar. I'm not sure if it is a dead pixel... it almost look like if there is dust inside my screen. Do you have something to recommend to take it away?

If you have not already solved your monitors problem, you can try PiXel Check, to see if you have any dead or stuck pixels.

  • Dark spots in my screen.

Hi, I bought an Imac 27'' like 6 months ago, but my screen seems to have some dark spots in the corner, when I put any white image, on that spots it shows like the screen were dusty but is not, at the same time in the middle screen when if Iput some black image some pixels show lighter than the others. is there any solution? thanks for answer .

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • Dark Spots on rMBP=Backlight Bleed?

Recently just purchased a Retina Macbook Pro refurb from the Apple store. Screen is a Samsung and perfect in all other respects: no dead pixels, no mura etc. The only issue I notice is when I turn the screen to an extreme angle, I see these darker spots on a white screen:
Should I be concerned or have others seen this issue as well? I really don't want to go through screen after screen.

Actually let me clear up a mistake I've made...
What I meant to say was that Apple were unable to *replace* the screen at this late juncture in time but *they can* in fact repair it. What I meant to say was that I asked Apple if a replacement would be possible but they said that the reseller would need to be contacted as they had final word on this. In the end the reseller declined and said that a repair was the only option. Sorry for the mixup there.
Anyway, I think I'll go with Apple rather than my reseller to get the replacement done. One can only assume that the Genius bar service centre is top notch when it comes to repairs? Would be interested to know if anybody here on the forums has had their iMac screens replaced by Apple due to backlight bleed (or even a different issue) and how it ended up working out for them?
    Thanks.

  • Mysterious dark spots

A few months ago, I took my macbook pro into the apple store because it had a series of grayish spots on the monitor. They were kind of like dirty spots on the screen I could never wipe off, which of course, annoyed the **** out of me. They told me dust got lodged behind the LCD screen, or something similar-- I have no clue how that could happen, because I don't use it in a particularly dusty environment, and there isn't a crack or large opening anywhere on the upper case. They replaced it and I was happy. Now... a week ago, I noticed the mysterious dark spots on my display. This is after I decided to wrap my computer in a nice plastic speck cocoon and take as much care as possible with the monitor. I don't clean it with anything other than deionized water. I don't put heavy things on top of my closed notebook. They're back... and growing in size. I'm thinking of taking my computer back to the apple store and getting the monitor replaced AGAIN. Now, if I do this... I want to know: how do I avoid this? What am I doing to my poor computer that causes it to collect dust inside the monitor? I don't want to keep doing this.

Well, you know the saying, sh...er...poop happens... ? Back when the PowerBook G4 came out there was a similar problem, where the screen would get either white splotches or dark, unlit, areas. My PBG4 had to go thru not one, not two, but FOUR screen replacements, till they figured that the motherboard was causing the failures. And that was within the first year warranty. Needless to say, I was more than eager to purchase AppleCare before that first year ran out!
After the last screen & motherboard replacement, it is still perfectly pretty and that's been almost 4 years, although since I bought the MBP last March, it doesn't get as much use. So, the moral of the story is that you may have had bad luck in getting a pair of bad parts, or the problem may lie elsewhere and the splotches are just a symptom. But you did pay for a good working computer, so don't be shy of using the warranty service. And do consider the benefits of the two additional years of coverage under AppleCare, if you plan on keeping the Mac past the first year; remember it is transferable, so it can also be a good selling point.

It's not dead pixels. It looks like there is something on the sensor or (more likely) on the lens inside the phone. Maybe the phone was in humid conditions and something grew in there? At any rate it's going to be difficult to fix without simply replacing the camera.

  • Dark spots on MBP 17" (Early 2008) screen

The dark spot has returned. Since my last post (copy below), I've had it into the genius bar for service, and they ended up having to ship it to a repair depot. I am just inside of my 90-days warranty, and it has happened again. I do not know what causes this, as my machine is my baby.
It's like a grey shadow on part of the screen, but it appears clear as day on a white screen (browser, photoshop, whatever turns all the pixels white).
I'm afraid that my last experience with Apple support was AWFUL! My computer was being repaired under AppleCare, but they kept it for 2 weeks before performing any work. I am afraid that if I go t get it repaired now (that I am no longer under AppleCare, and do not have an AppleCare plan), that they'll basically tell me I'm SOL. This shouldn't be happening again.
Dark spot on 10 month old MBP non-glossy screen
    Posted: Feb 17, 2009 9:26 AM
My screen has developed a dark spot near the center of the screen. The MBP itself has been in a hard Speck case since the day I got the computer. No drops, and has been cared for very well. I am still under warranty. Is this something AppleCare or Warranty will cover?
Mac Book Pro (Early 2008) Mac OS X (10.5.6) 4GB RAM

well... you were never under applecare to begin with, that is a purchased extra.
you were under the original warranty which has now expired, which means you are NOT eligible to enroll the machine into applecare.
Call the 800 # & speak with customer relations if you have to. they should be able to fix the machine again as the repair is covered for 90 days.
if you wish not to send it in, they can issue a ticket # which you can then take the machine to a local auth. service center. they can use the ticket / incident # to order parts & fix your machine.

  • Why is there a slightly dark spot on the bottom left hand corner on my iPod Touch 3rd Gen after I cleaned it?

  • Get rid of intrusive HUGE and UGLY dark bands behind HUGE icons on Home Screen

How do I get rid of the intrusive, huge and ugly dark bands behind the huge icons, and reduce the size of the icons on the Home Screen?
On my 8320 I can use pictures of my kids for wallpaper. On the 8900 they have wasted half of the beautiful screen with these huge ugly icons and dark bands - cuts right through two of my kids eyes and two of my kids mouths and below.
What were they thinking? They advertise the 8900 (and the 8520) by emphasizing a full screen picture - but when you actulally buy the phones, they have inserted these cursed screenscape hogs. Any firmware fixes yet? Or, now that Nokia has released their E71 that not only handles email as well as my BB, but also allows me to create and edit docx, should I abandon the 8900 as a lost cause and buy the E71? And, as long as we are discussing RIM's myopic short sightedness, why no 3G on this device?
Please hurry, my buyers remorse clock is ticking and I need to send this thing back to the carrier if it can't be fixed.
    Thanks in advance.

Hello, to change the size (I have six icons per row not five) go to options>advanced options>accessability and change the amount on the grid. Default 6x6, then 4x4 3x3 etc., you can also change the colours. Hope I`m not barking up the wrong tree but have bbn of help! Regards Kew

  • IPhone 4: display has dark spot, brightness is not uniform

    Hi!
    I'm Hector from Italy.
My new iPhone 4 just arrived from the Apple Online Store. It works fine but the top left of the screen has a darker spot; such non-uniform brightness becomes very evident when opening, for instance, Safari (that has a white background).
Should I send it back to Apple?
Or is this a known software issue?
If I go to Milan's Apple Store will they swap it? I would rather not stay without iPhone since all the phones I have at home have a standard SIM and not the microsim.
(without considering that after spending 800€ I really hoped to get a quality product)
    Thank you!

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions....
If I go to Milan's Apple Store will they swap it?
This being a user to user forum we can't say what the policy would be at a particular store but if it were me, I'd take the iPhone and ask for an exchange. Make sure and take proof of purchase with you.
You can provide feedback for "top left of the screen has a darker spot; such non-uniform brightness becomes very evident when opening, for instance, Safari (that has a white background)." here.

    Absolutely.

  • Impressive iMac 24" Dark Spots

Sorry to repeat. But I don't understand why what I posted yesterday disappeared.
My story is long to write down. I hope any of you who got experience with dark spots/patterns on iMac screens can help me to look into the problem I appreciate your help.
The associated pictures of this post can be found here in my google album:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/zhangchao/IMacDarkSpots?feat=directlink
I purchased my iMac 24 inch in July 2008. After using it for 2 months, I noticed some dark patterns started to appear on the machine’s 24 inch screen. I should have taken it to Apple back then if I wasn’t using it all the time.
These patterns become clearer if you set the background to white. A lot of iMac users have reported similar problems. Actually, if you google "iMac dark spot", you can find a lot of such posts. The patterns I got are very similar to what’s reported here in the very first picture here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1915086&tstart=15
I contacted Apple two weeks ago when I finally got some time free. I was asked to go to the Apple Store here in Milwaukee’s Bayshore mall and left my machine there for 3 days for them to investigate. When I went to the store to pick up my Mac, I talked to the gentleman who did the repair and investigation work and a manager. They basically told me that I got the patterns because there was some weird “white substance” everywhere in my machine. The substance was circulated between the layers of glass cover and the LCD etc appearing to us as the dark spots. However, it’s easy to remove the stuff between the LCD and the glass cover but impossible to remove the stuff which got into the LCD.
They strongly suspect the white substance came from where I placed my machine (my living room indeed). They don’t think the “white substance” is hair or fiber. It’s like pure dust and very subtle. Since they believe the cause of the problem is environmental, they will not fix it for me under my warranty.
But I disagree and I think the white substance indeed comes from inside of the machine.
Overall, I think my apartment is pretty clean. The machine is always placed on a wooden table which I clean every week. There aren’t a lot of things around my iMac so it gets good air circulation.
My apartment is located in an apartment community. Hundreds of people live here. The community is not new (20+ years old) and is professionally maintained. I talked to the manager of the community and some of my neighbors, none of them have ever heard of anything similar.
In my apartment, I have never been able to observe the "white substance" anywhere aside from the iMac. I did some investigation into the case, placing some blue tape under the hole of the back of the iMac where air comes out. After doing that for over one week, the only place that I can observe any "white substance" is on the piece of blue tape. The pictures in the album will make everything clear. This makes it really hard for me to believe the problem is environmental. In addition to that, if the "white substance" is so subtle and so weird (as if the only purpose of its very existence is to get iMac into trouble. Other computers and electronic devices in my apartment are completely fine), how can so many people got similar dark patterns on their screens?
However, Apple doesn't take this as evidences that the problem is not environmental. Right now, I am gonna buy air purifiers and hire professional indoor air inspectors to help me to find where the trouble is.
I read several posts re "iMac dark spots" problems. Some lucky guys simply got their screens replaced by Apple and others were just left with no help.None of them actually gives detailed explanation of the cause of their problems. I notice most of reported problems happen to iMac 24 inch machines shipped in early and mid 2008.
If you have any insights, please let me know. I greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Since you purchased your iMac in July of 2008, you are right on the edge of your one year limited warranty.
Go here https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do and see if you iMac is still within the one year limited warranty. You will need the serial number which is located... click the Apple Menu then click About This Mac. Where you see the Version number 10.5 click there twice. The serial number will be displayed there. If you can't see it there, open the System Profiler. (Applications/Utilities) Select Hardware on the left. The serial number is on the right.
If it were me, I'd take the iMac back to that Apple store and *ask to speak to a manager*. Tell them you are dissatisfied with the outcome of your first visit and want your iMac repaired.
Make sure and take in your original purchase receipt from when you purchased the iMac and any other pertinent paperwork.
*"They basically told me that I got the patterns because there was some weird “white substance” everywhere in my machine."*
    I don't believe that.
This problem started within 2 months of using your iMac. It would take the force of an F1 tornado to get that much dust inside the monitor that fast.
If you still can't get that Apple store to repair your iMac, if you can, go to another Apple store OR find an Apple certified repair provider. Perhaps you know of a friend with a Mac that might be able to give you some recommendations for a place to take it. But make sure they are Apple certified.
