Dark to Transparent Gradient?

Hi everyone!  I've had the hobby of graphic design for a while now.  Recently, I've been trying to recreate things like flyers and websites for entertainment.  Sadly, I've run into a slight problem.
I'm currently trying to recreate a professional photobooth flyer.  I'm having trouble recreating the dark to transparent gradient in the footer.  Here's the original flyer: http://i.imgur.com/CMDbr.png.
Whenever I try to recreate this effect, it ends up being very sudden and unappealing.  Here's an example (note that it is unfinished, leaving some areas white): http://i.imgur.com/ned6i.jpg
Is there any better way of doing this gradient effect (or does it even need to be fixed, for that matter?).
Any other suggestions about the flyer are welcome.  Thanks!

An option is to use a Shape with feather applied to its mask. Here's a black Shape layer (opacity 97%) with a subractive ellipse. See Feather in Properties panel.

    Foreground to transparent gradient
Foreground to Transparent will not work by simply clicking 'OK' and dragging mouse across a selected layer. This gradient tool is hyper sensitive, and unstable.
We tried to record the PS method for our gradient. Jing was our first choice, but Jing’s flash engine conflicts with the PS flash engine, blocking the gradient tool’s drag action. Jing can only record steps prior to the final drag-and-drop gradient action. Cam is rendered useless by HDR displays’ high resolution, causing glare white-out. Here is our visible work-flow.
    >>
      1. Select Gradient Tool on left toolbar, open tool group and select 'Foreground to transparent' tool.
Occasionally, next close and reopen PS 2014 (stubborn gradient problems).
    >
When PS 2014 reopens, the specific gradient tool remains selected. This clears some aspects of the PS 2014 cache, which sometimes help.
Notice that selected left tool bar button momentarily changes to Eyedropper, when Gradient Editor opens! A hint of what follows.
    2. Select a layer to apply gradient to, this selected layer is the gradient tool's "Foreground". However, gradient is applied in ‘reverse’ (see below, 5).
    3. Panels bottom bar, click mask button to 'Add a layer mask', then ‘Filter for pixel layers’ and ‘Add a vector mask' -

    This may also help!
Using only Add layer mask may indiscriminately result the following:
    - Stressing here the words "may indiscriminately"...
when PS 2014 is unstable, adding actions when Layer mask alone fails, may (often) be stabilizing enough to make gradient work...
once PS 2014 begins performing Foreground to transparent gradients, then simply begin creating new transparency gradients when PS 2014 re-opens,
    or just click Add layer mask to get going again;
    - Layer mask alone may suffice, or it may slightly penetrate underlying layers with partial transparency, and/or…
    - May convert transparent background to a foreground 'Color to transparent' gradient in opposite direction to (reversed) Foreground to transparent gradient;
    - Exact/intended layer vs. vector behaviors are unknown, though each provides unique creative applications, in isolation and when used together;
    - Use a new PSD file dedicated just to Foreground to transparent gradient. This quickly resolves inevitable multiple layer-and-tool conflicts.
    4. Layers panel top bars, click ‘Lock transparent pixels’ and then click 'Filter for pixel layers'. These actions help focus PS 2014 on the current work-flow. Though given this gradient’s obvious corruption, it cannot be said that any method is specific, or repeatable. We are now stepping beyond the sometimes sufficient Add layer mask, experimenting with gradient line attempts as we go.
    5. Finally, we will drag from point A to point B in workspace, resulting gradient with greatest transparency at A-side of selected layer. Click workspace anywhere and drag across selected layer: this creates a straight, dashed gradient line. When the mouse button is released at point B, the dashed line vanishes and the gradient is applied. Release mouse button where you want gradient to end. Note that the endpoint B inside of layer object will fade into opaque towards point B, right up to the B-side edge of the layer object. PS 2014 auto-renders an even gradient. Extending beyond object renders opacity curve with midpoint transparency closer to full opacity B-side of gradient line. This gradient tool, in its current structure, performs in reverse and should be renamed to Transparent to foreground: starting Point A is the transparent side of the gradient line!
    6. Ctrl-Z or history to undo Foreground to transparent gradient (s). Experiment until it looks best. Multiple gradients can be applied from any direction. Occasionally, once PS 2014 has established effective (reversed) Foreground to transparent gradient behavior or behaviors (?... not sure what's going on there), then closing and reopening PS 2014, one can immediately begin to create new (reversed) Foreground to transparent gradients... without any masking or other workspace preparation!
Office 365 32-bit and PS 2014 64-bit conflict. When image pasted from PS into Word 365, Office pastes image as ‘Object’. Pasted object is distorted as square dimensions are vertically stretched 150% to offset square dimensions – e.g., 2px x 4px PS 2014 copied image layer becomes 2px x 6px Word image “Object”. Also, pasted objects cannot be formatted in any way. Re-sizing is not possible! This dimension distortion and formatting conflict does not arise in Office 64-bit; however, Microsoft will discourage (even withdraw support) as the bulk of corporate clients deploy Office as 32-bit software. PS 2014 is set to Maximize Compatibility.

  • Transparent gradient in Keynote?

How does one make a transparent gradient of a shape in Keynote—a shape that is completely opaque on one side and completely transparent on the opposite side?

    Draw then select the shape
Inspector > Format > Style > Fill > Advanced Gradient Fill (the Inspector is the side panel on the right)
Click on one of the two colour fill sliders to show the Colour Wheel
Drag the Opacity slider all the way down
lastly, in the advanced gradient fill, drag the colour fill slider that has the transparency set, drag the slider towards the centre to adjust the opacity from left to right

  • Probelms with PS CS5 - Cant add a transparent gradient layer mask to a layer - please help

My company just upgraded us to cs5 on our macs. I was working along in photoshop & dont know if I hit something inadvertently or what but all of a sudden I cannot add a black to transp gradient to a layer mask. Ive searched around even saved out and re-loaded the gradients from my pc (which has the black to transparent gradient in the gradient editor & the process works fine).
Funny thing is that in the mac gradient picker, the black to transparent gradient is black and solid white but the name of it is 'black to transparent' in the editor. Ive tried
I guess my questions would be how would one make a transparent gradient, or how would one reset the gradients to default becuase every time i delete all the gradients the add a new .grd file from my pc, it still does not show the gradient.
Its amazing how such a small thing like this saves so much time and its eating me up that I cant get this to work

  • Multiple Transparent Gradients to photo

I so hope someone an respond on line right now.  I have searched to find how to apply a second or third transparent gradient to a photo to blend it with another photo.  I thought I remembered how to do it in CS 3.  I am on Windows CS5 Photoshop and have applied one gradient.  I thought you somehow commit that layer mask in then add a new one so you can continue blending the photo.  However cannot find a command that works under the file at tp that reads layers and cannot therefore continue to create transparent blending.  Please tell me what I am missing.  This is a key tool to feeling comfortable to buying CS 5. I will await to see who responds if I can.  Thanks in advance. Anita

Mylenium, it is a placed photo as a layer.  Once I use the tool in one area on the mask, I cannot go elsewhere on the photo to create additional gradients to the photo without undoing.  I was using the Black/white.  While this may be part of the issue, in CS3 it seems you had to commit the first gradient task before moving to additional gradients to the photo elsewhere on it.  I take you are saying I can make multiple gradients as long as it is not fixed.  So pperhaps I need to know what you mean by fixed.  I hope I make since.  See below another persons response.  Right now I get stuck one gradient undoing another.  I will return.  ::)

  • Illustrator CS6 to CS4: White lines along edges of semi-transparent gradient meshes

    Hi,
I recently invested in CS6 Production Premium and I've just tested legacy support by saving an Illustrator CS6 image in CS4 format.
The image contains a number of semi-transparent gradient meshes used for highlights.
Having loaded the saved CS4 .ai file in CS6, white lines appear along my semi-transparent gradient meshes (see the attached screenshot).
What's happening is that the anchor points with 0% opacity in CS6 suddenly have 100% opacity when I load the saved CS4 files in CS6.
    Is this a known error?
If so, how/where do I report it?
Here are the relevant CS6 and CS4 files:
    http://snk.to/f-chcig8s9
P.S. There are no white lines when I save the image in CS5 format and load it in CS6.

The image contains a number of semi-transparent gradient meshes used for highlights.
CS4 doesn't support semi-transparent gradient meshes. So they are simulated by using opacity masks. The masks are generated atuomatically from the meshes in the file, so they have the exact same size, which causes the fringes. If you would create this manually, you would make the opacity mask slightly larger in order to avoid fringes.

  • How to create transparency gradient

    Hi
please share how to create transparency gradient
    have attached the example

    qanibh,
In the newest version(s), you may specify opacity values for the Gradient Fill.
    In older versions,, you may:
    1) Create the shape with the solid end colour upon the seethrough background;
    2) Copy to the front, apply a gradient to the copy, and in the Transparency palette/panel flyout Make Opacity Mask, setting Clip and Invert as wished.

  • Still not understanding radial w/ transparency gradient

I am trying to create the effect of a soft glow light behind a subject.
I must be going dumb, but part of the problem is simply not "getting" the zen of doing gradients in PE, partly because everyone's very helpful suggestions seem to vary so widely on how to do it and I'm getting more confused.
What I want to do is have one color (say dark red) where I can control its saturation, size, etc. and have everything else be transparent. I will be putting this graphic later on a website that has a colored background so I need the effect of the light being cast on that background.
The more I try to learn gradients, the farther way the knowledge seems to be.
Can anyone walk me through this?
    Thanks.

This is as close as I can come to your request:
Select background color 0,0,155 (can be any color, but this shows up well)
File>new>blank file, 400px wide, 400px high, color mode RGB, resolution 300px/in
Access Custom shape tool. In options bar set color to white, and in shape library for this tool select the triangle shape. Click on the little triangle at the top to get the shape geometry options. Select fixed size. Enter 260 px width, 225 px height. Click on canvas to create triangle.
Now choose the oval shape in the library. Change geometry to 260 px wide, 50 px high. Click on canvas to create oval.
Access move tool, and nudge oval into position at bottom of triangle with arrow keys  In layers palette, link the 2 shape layers and merge them (Layer>merge linked)
    Select foreground color red
Select gradient tool, in options bar select foreground to transparent, linear gradient
In layers palette, CTRL+left click the cone layer thumbnail to select it - should see marching ants
Drag from south to north within the selection to to apply the gradient
    Select>deselect
Here is a print screen to demonstrate the layer structure:

Note the linked layers referred to above - #5
If you finally need to delete the blue background for your purpose, you can do this readily utilizing the magic wand tool.

  • Colour to transparent gradient in Illustrator CS2

I am creating a logo in Illustrator CS2 and i want to put a reflection
underneath, that has a gradient fading to transparent. It can be done but the logo needs to be used in other programs such as InDesign. When placed into InDesign the transparency of the gradient is no longer there, it changes to white.

  • Transparent gradient in table cell

When I try to fill a table cel with a feathered gradient that has transparent areas in it, the gradient turns opaque in the table cell. I've also tried anchoring a shape with a gradient into a table cell, and again the transparent areas turn opaque.
Is there a workaround to fill a table cell with a gradient that has transparent areas in the gradient?

    Corrigendum:
If one is aware that the gradient, even when applied to a cell, takes in reference the entire table, then yes, it is possible!

  • Transparent Gradient Adjustment Layer

I would like to create an adjustment layer (so I can easily tweak it later) that creates the exact same effect as a gradient tool in the follwing example.  I for the life of me can't figure out how to do it, maybe it's just not possible...
Using the gradient tool to create a mask I can easily get this result (note the gradient fades the image but maintains a transparent background):
Using a gradient adjustment layer I am forced to choose a color (white to transparent) and I get this:
I want the the former (transparent fade) so I can easily drop it over any color background later, but I want to later so I can easily adjust the % of fade later.
Is there any way to make a gradient adjustment layer fade to transparent?  I thought maybe some combination of layer blending would accomplish it, but haven't been able to figure it out.  I'm trying to keep it simple, but it's ok if the solution is a little complicated as I plan to automate it into an action that'll be applied to dozens, maybe hundreds, of images.

»Is there any way to make a gradient adjustment layer fade to transparent?«
Obviously, because that’s what Your gradient is – white from 100% opacity to 0%.
Transparency is a feature of the layer, its blending settings, clipping masks, any masks applied to it or the containing groups … – so it cannot be added »on top«, as You seem to assume.
If I understand correctly You want to use it as a mask for another layer.
One way to achieve that would be to place the gradient (X% opacity to Y%) below the layer You want to mask, convert it to a Smart Object (or rasterize it), set its Fill to 0%, turn off Blend Clipped Layers as a Group in the Blending Options and create a Clipping Mask (alt-click on the line between the gradient and the layer above in the Layers Panel).
Changing the fade would then necessitate opening the SO and making the changes there, so convenience-wise that’s not so great.
But maybe someone else has a better idea.
Incidentally: Your screenshot seems to indicate that You don’t make use of Smart Objects to automatically update the »reflection« with the upper object and You might want to consider it.

  • Blend modes and semi-transparent gradients?

    Hi all.
I don't do a lot of print, so whenever I have the need I find
myself a little disoriented in my design approach. I know AI has
blend modes, does FH have any sort of blend mode ability?
I also need - and this is my main hurdle - the ability to
fade a gradient to transparent. So a gradient that goes from a
solid color, to a transparent color. I never found a way to do this
in AI, except to mask the object with an opacity mask. Is there any
    way in FreeHand?
    TIA

No, FreeHand can make 'simulated' transparency effect from
solid colors by creating third vector object to overalapping area.
There is "true" transparency and effects like drop shadows
which create a bitmap objet like Illustrator but they work ONLY as
rgb. In high resolution output there may be significant blurring,
    color sifts and misalignement.

It depends what you have beneath the gradient. I assume that
you have several objects, images, etc. because making a gradient
from color to background color is very simple. In FreeHand this
kind of effects (for print) require a lot of masking (with paste
inside) and even creating parts of the artwork in Photoshop.
In general all the effects and masking work much better in
Illustrator. For example layer vector mask saved me a working day
or two when I made about 150 butterfly distribution maps. However
FreeHand's Paste Inside is superior compared to Iluustrator's
object masking. Especially because selecting objects in Illustrator
is exteremely difficult and masked object is selectable outside
    mask area.
I'll repeat myself but I'd like to have some Illustrator
features like raster effects, color management and layer masks
moved into FreeHand. Combined FreeHand and Illustrator would make
truly great product If I get to choose the features that is. ;)
